HD Video to SD DVD

First I want to apologize if this thread already exists. I am working with a slow connection and not a lot of time to do searches.
I purchased an HV30 and I have been filming in HD format. Many many tapes. I started to edit and I realize I am all discombobulated here. I think I am getting to where I need to be. However, I have a question. I was told that I need to convert via compressor from final cut after I have edited my HD footage to DV format.
My question, is it best to convert the HDV footage to DV prior to editing or should I follow the steps of editing the HDV footage and then export using compressor to convert it to SD vido? Do I benifit either way of is it the same?
Or am I not getting something entirely about the workflow?
Thanks.

You'll probably lose some video quality if you convert to DV and then convert again to MPEG for the DVD. If you aren't having any problems editing the HDV then wait until the last step and use compressor to output to MPEG for the DVD.

  • I have just had all my video converted to DVDs and now I would like to edit them...how do I import them into imovie?

Can somebody help me figure out how to import my home videos from a DVD into imovie?

    That means 'reverse engineering them'!
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • Is it possible to export a video clip from DVD player to iMovie '09?

If I load a homemade DVD onto my iMac using Disk Utility and then import either the entire disc or portions of the disc into iMovie, that works just fine. However I noticed that some clips are missing in iMovie, even though they are on the iMac in form of a .dmg file on the desktop. The same file that was used to import in to iMovie. If I look at this file using DVD player, everything is there, but some of these clips are missing in the event window. So I created a video clip in DVD player of those pieces missing in iMovie and now how can I get these into iMovie?

Hey, best way to import video from a DVD video disc for editing is to acctually have a simple video file. Use Handbrake or MPEG StreamClip to read the disc and create a video file off the video stream.
You could also set in and out points anc manually create several clips, which may help with playback and rendering for editing. I don't know how extensive you're going to get in your editing with iMovie...
    Hope that helped.

Go to the Map mode in your iDVD project and make sure the blue bin at the left is empty.  That's where you drag slideshows to if you want the DVD to open immediately to that slideshow and bypass the menu.
If there is an item in there drag it out.

Unfortunately, the recording & movie industry does not respect the rights of the people who make them money, and thus you can only use the paid-for content in ways they see fit. Even if I lived in a bunker where no one else could possibly see the movie I paid for, therefor I'm not 'sharing it illegally', I would still not be allowed in a blue moon to copy that movie to DVD for TV viewing. Someone will tell you to get an AppleTV. How about Apple give us one for free? Until this changes, people wanting to use their content in multiple locations will continue to download music & movies via torrents, legally or illegally.

  • Windows Media Player Doesn't play video files or DVDs (Windows 7 Home Premium)

    Hello,
I recently purchased a new hard drive and installed Windows 7 Home Premium on it. Since then, Windows Media Player has not been able to play any kind of video files or DVDs. I have tried using the Fixit tool and turning the WMP off and on with the Windows
Features menu, but it has not solved the problem. I have also made sure that my video and audio drivers are up to date.
The errors that come up say:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or a required codec might not be installed on your computer.
    and
Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video. You might need to adjust your Windows display settings. Open display settings in Control Panel, and then try lowering your screen resolution and color quality settings.
Any help with this would be great, because I like using WMP better than other media players.

    Hi,
Firstly, please try to use the Video example in C:\Users\Public\Videos\Sample Videos if it could play normally.
Secondly, try to reinstall Graphic Card driver for test.
If problem persists, try to remove WMP in Windows feature and add it again for test.

  • How do I import video off a DVD?

Is there a way to import video from a DVD directly into Final Cut Pro Express or do I need to download another program in order to do so. The DVDs are no copyrighted they are actually DVD I burned myself. If I do need to download another program which is the best/safest?

MPEG Streamclip (free) coupled with the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component ($19, downloadable from Apple, if you don't already have it).
If the DVD is standard def, use MPEG Streamclip to convert it to *QuickTime > Apple DV/DVCPRO NTSC.* If hidef/widescreen, convert it to QuickTime > Apple Intermediate Codec.

I am very new to Mac and this hurts!
PLEASE someone help me, I only see a USB, DO they sell some thing to help get the Video into iMOVIE?
    Thanks......

Search this forum for "compatible, DVD camcorder" and you will find many threads where people lament this truth:
iMovie is for miniDV formatted video connected via Firewire.
Mini DVD camcorders are designed for you to do very light editing on the camera before you finalize the DVD and don't support being imported into a computer. Anyway, many of the experts here know of converters and workarounds, if you want to spend some more money. You could start with these threads:

When you export the videos out of iPhoto be sure to select Kind = Original.  Otherwise you'll just get an image file of the first frame of the video.

  • Video extracted using DVD x DV won't export

I'm using DVD x DV (v. 1.34) to extract video from a DVD for use in an iMovie project (I have iMovie '08, 7.1.1). To extract I used the iMovie 6 Final Cut setting. The video looks good in iMovie and I edited it etc. but then when I exported the project the video portion was black. Is there any way to fix this?

turns out i used expert settings/animation and changing it to expert settings Apple intermediate codec seems to be working now--do i get credit for solving my own problem?

I am attempting to convert 8mm video cassettes to dvd using a video cassette player, elgato video capture with rca/usb connections to the mac then editing in imovie and burning dvd-r using idvd. The picture quality is awful. What can I do??????

At what point is the video quality bad?  Is it bad on capture?  I would recommend using an s-video 1394 firewire converter instead.  They capture the video at a higher bit rate.  If you have a lot of 8mm tapes to capture, invest in a stand alone DVD recorder.  They capture and compress in one shot.  If you need to rip it back from the DVD into iMovie again, I would recommend using DVDxDV.

  • Help with putting 2 seperate videos onto 1 Dvd

I have been looking around for a tutorial to put 2 separate video on 1 Dvd using Premier then exporting not only the single sequence or videos to Encore but i want to export them as 2 separate videos that can be triggered separately in encore by the click of their names on a premade menu. So i want Premier to basically encode these 2 videos separately under the 4.7 gig. amount and be able to manipulate(set menu items to trigger the movies) them in encore.

Make your sequences, export out as DV AVI files, bring them into Encore and author as usual.

  • Distorted video in finished dvd.

Hello, this is my first dvd I created.
From premiere I exported a 3min long avi video.
    Aspesct Ratio: 720x576
    Pixel aspect ratio 1,422.
    Copressor: Indeo Video 5.10.
    Interlace: Lower Field First
In Encore DVD I imported the video as an asset, menu is set to PAL 16:9. All works fine in preview view. But when I play the finished DVD the video looks like the picture in the link below, the menu works fine. But when I try to play the transcoded video in Encore Preview after I completed the burning. I got an error message "abnormal condition". And after that I am not able to import the 3min avi file, I got the error message: Error loading transcode preset.

    Martin,
Did you try exporting as DV AVI yet? (Also see:
Video in finished DVD is really distorted
