HD4850 with better cooling fan

Hi,
I own an MSI Radeon HD4850 and today my computer shut down while gaming because the card got to hot. I checked the temperature of the card during load and it hits about 106 - 110 degrees celsius. Is this normal for this card? Also when checking on the internet I found that MSI seems to have put better cooling fans on some of the hd4850's, are these later releases of the card, if so how can I get the better cooling fan for my card from MSI?
My card is the following:
And it seems that this fan cannot adequatly cool the card?
I have found these images of cards which appear to have a much better cooling fan:
My card is 1 year old at the moment and I have just recently started using it for gaming, that's why I am only noticing now.
Any information is greatly appreciated

My N250GTS has a cooler like the 2nd one you have pictured and it went to over 100oC under heavy load when I had it in my Sony case. It has no front intake fan nor provision to mount one so it's not the type of cooler in particular that may be your problem. The problem was poor air flow through the case as it was never designed for such a heat producing VGA card. It's no longer in that case but solution for me was mount an 80mm fan where the left side cover had vent holes and had it blowing onto the card. Temp never went much over 75oC after that.
Normally you shouldn't have a heat problem if you have a front fan blowing in and a rear fan blowing out in addition to the PSU fan.

  • Cooling fan 902

Suddenly yesterday I turned on my computer and it ran fine but then the screen went black so I turned it off and when I turned it back on it gave me a black screen and said "the bios has detected that your cooling fan is not working...press enter to shut down" i checked online and found a page where i could download an executive file to fix it but idk if that bios update is the correct one b/c i think i have the latest fit my dv6t-2100 which came out in June and the bios fix i saw had a release date in april. How do know of this is th corect fix and how do i check my bios info b/c when i ran the exe file for the fix it gave me a page that wanted me to input the current and new bios versions and id's. Thank you

    Hello,
I see that you're having an issue with the cooling fan giving you a 902 error message. This could be a hardware or software issue. More than likely the fan is going bad resulting in a hardware issue.
Now, before getting this repaired, I would suggest flashing the BIOS. Here is a document showing you how to do so. Now, if this doesn't resolve the issue I would suggest updating the BIOS. Not knowing what notebook you have, you can follow this document which shows you how to update the BIOS.
Also, I would recommend getting some canned air and blowing out the vents in the side and bottom of the laptop. Here is a document  that shows you how to reduce heat from the notebook. If after doing this, you still have problems with over-heating, and your laptop is in warranty, you can take your laptop to a HP Authorized Service Center and ask them to clean the fan and heat sink. You can check your warranty here.
If none of these steps work I would suggest calling HP@8004746836 and see what options they have to repair or replace the notebook.
If you have any more questions let me know.

  • Cooling fan problem

Please my laptop is having issues with the cooling fan. And now it is no more turning on. Please what can i do for it to work properly??

first, check if there are any obstruction in the vent.
if not performing BIOS update resolves that kind of issue its not a hardware issue.
if after BIOS update same issue persist, check the setting of the fan in BIOS (f10) and check the FAn setting is on.
contact HP for repair if issue persist

  • Agitation by the System built-in cooling fan

Please would you tell me what is wrong with my cooling fan, which suppose to kick on ONLY if system becomes hot or reaches certain temperature. However, my system cooling fan turns itself on whenever I watch online news video broadcast/clips on you tube, apple's movie trailers or doing video conference, even if I just power it on. weird as it is, would only under those activities listed above trigger the Cooling Fan. I would like to know if there's any system adjustment to change setting of that, and what causes the fan to turn on? could it be malfunction? Why only under those activities will the fan turn itself on but not others?
I just reformat it recently, so everything should be neat and smooth. But Gee...when it's on, it's going nonstop and full force until the seconds I quit from those activities!
Thank you for your time, I really appreciate it.
    Sincerely,
    Brian

I think you are seeing normal behavior. My 1G PowerBook with Tiger will also speed up the fans when temps get to about 140F/60C and that's usually when watching videos. If you don't a "thermometer" program, get the iStat Pro widget here:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
It will report temps as well as fas speed so you know what's going on.
Why only under those activities will the fan turn itself on but not others?
I'm not a hardware expert but I know that the video codecs are part of a decoding procedure that involves the main processor and the graphics processor unit (GPU) in the video circuitry. Both make more heat when they work harder, just like the human body. 2D activities like word processing, mail programs and surfing don't take as many system resources.
I believe the fans run all the time, but the base speed is low enough to be nearly silent. I can't hear mine until they speed up when doing videos and the like. I can hear the speed gradually increase speed, and then gradually decrease back to their "silent" mode once I quit programs that use a lot of resources.
I also have a MacBook Pro and, like the PowerBook, its fans start to spin up when I watch videos.

  • HP G6 cooling fan mystery...

    Hi
I hope someone can shed some light on my laptop.
I had an issue with my cooling fan a few months back where it decided it didn't want to work anymore. I had the warning come on up whenever I started my laptop and it would switch itself off unless i pressed enter. When I did I could use my laptop but it got hot and the fan wasn't working. Anyway, I was going to get the fan replaced but I never did. About 3 months later, there was some stuff I wanted to get off my laptop, so I turned it on and now the fan is working fine. No warning messages or anything. I can tell its working as I can hear it and feel it blowing the air out,
Since when did computers fix themselves?

    Hi wardy2k,
The reason the fan was throwing an error and was not functioning earlier could be becuase of a lot of performance reasons.
I would like to inform you that with softwares like the HP Support Assistant Software that always is performing updates at the background, fixes for common issues on the Notebook happens in the form of updates. BIOS Update is known to fix minor fan issues and over-heating concerns. These updates could have got installed which resolved your issue. HP always keeps a track of the common issues that get reported on different models, work on solutions and push them to Notebooks connected to the internet via the HP Support Assistant Software.
Heat in the computer can also be affected by the physical environment in which the computer is located, surface on which it is placed, air vent's exposure to fresh airand even by local weather conditions (such as high humidity.) Any change in these conditions could bring a big difference.
Since you have mentioned that the Notebook was doing this right at the startup, it could also be that the set of programs you had at the startup of windows earlier was too many or were really causing performance issues for the Notebook which was difficult for the fan to handle.
I am glad to know that the issue got fixed by itself.

  • Hi i have cooling fan(902) issue. my laptop wont run anymore asking me to ctc you

    Hi
i have a problem with my hp notebook. it's only been bought last year. all of a sudden it's says there is a problem with the cooling fan and its (902) .  It's not running anymore. pls help me with this issue as i don't have my laptop working for more than 4 days
    many thanks

That kind of problem requires sending it back to HP if you are under warranty. If not you have to replace the cooling fan, which is a pretty major job. The BIOS will not allow the laptop to boot into Windows if the cooling fan is dead. I can't tell you exactly how to do it because you don't tell us what kind of laptop you have.

  • Lenovo cooling fan is too loud

    Hi,
I install fedora linux on lenovo y570 (version with i7) because I buy lenovo without Operating System.
When I'm start fedora few minutes latter cooling fan is start and works continuously, my CPU temperature is OK (~45C).
What I can do with this cooling fan, noise is to big
    Thanks

Hi, I put also ubuntu on my notebook, but...
It's looks my laptop in not supported
I always have message "Unable to connect to ThinkPad Fan Control daemon (tpfand). Please make sure you are running this program on a supported IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad, a recent thinkpad_acpi module is loaded with fan_control=1 and tpfand has been started."
I read on wiki page from your link:
Does this work with my Thinkpad XYZ?
This depends on whether your Thinkpad is supported by the thinkpad_acpi kernel module. Check if the thinkpad_acpi module is loaded at all
    lsmod | grep thinkpad_acpi
and if not, try to load it by hand
    sudo modprobe thinkpad_acpi
If that fails, tpfand will not work with your Thinkpad.
Second command fails on my system, so I definitely can not use this software ;(

  • Ticking sound in sync with cooling fan

I just started hearing a ticking sound in sync with the frequency of the cooling fan speed. I'm guessing it's a bearing going bad in the cooling fan but that sounds like the diagnosis on a car engine. Anybody have any experience with this?

You could, but it would probibly get better results if you measured the output of an audio amplifer that is being driven by the microhone. The problem is that microphones tend to be pretty low-level devices so reading them directly could cause noise problems.
In terms of an amp, unless you are particularly concerned about amplitudes, any cheap thing you could pick up at radio shack would work.

  • Macbook pro dock - with ext hd and ext dvd burner and cooling fans needed??

why doesn't anybody make these? I could have a 1 terabyte HD, dvd burner and cooling fans to keep the macbook pro cool enough to touch while playing wow, or editing video. It could also be made of aluminum and look great. Oh and it has to be configurable to allow use of any 15" macbook pro(ie, bookends units are different because new models include firewire 800)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Do you have iStatPro? You can download it from the Apple site and see what it is that is running so hot. Under the low usage you describe, the fans should be idling silently. And you might be able to tell what is getting so hot.
If Activity Monitor doesn't show anything, then you might want to run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test. It sounds like something is getting very hot. If there is a hardware problem, then you should get one or more error codes. The Apple Hardware Test is on Install Disc #1 of the gray discs that came with your Mac--you boot to it by holding down "D". Instructions are on the disc and on the screen.
Also, be sure you have "All Processes" selected on the Activity Monitor. And the boxes at the bottom should be mostly black with very little red or green at 3.5% CPU usage. Given all the symptoms, I am surprised that there is not some process running amok in the background.
    Good luck!

  • Do the 2011 Macbook Pros with an Apple installed SSD have cooling fans?

Do the 2011 Macbook Pros with an Apple installed SSD have cooling fans? In other words, I pre ordered the 256 SSD option with my purchase from Apple. I have searched and searched the internet for a clear answer. I have called Apple and have gotten contradictory answers. Can anyone definitively answer this question?

It's unbelievable that anyone purporting to represent Apple could have misinformed you in such a ridiculous way. Apple has never produced a MBP that didn't have one or more cooling fans in it. The percentage of total heat generated by a MBP that comes from its hard drive (or SSD) is tiny — I would guess it's considerably less than 5%. The notion that the machine could dispense with cooling fans as a result of switching from a conventional drive to a SSD is laughable.
I can only assume that you posed the question in such a way that it was not clearly understood by the people responding.

  • List of Compatible CPU Cooling Fans with my MSI X48C Motherboard

Just wondering if there is a list of compatible CPU Cooling Fans/Heatsinks that go with the MSI X48C MOBO. I am using a Q9550. Ones that I am considering:
Cooler Master Hyper N520 CPU Cooler
    Zalman 9700[NT]
    Thermaltake SpinQ CPU Cooler
Also, if you know of any others that would be good, feel free to add your opinion!
    Thanks for the help!

I am personally partial to Thermalright products for cpu cooling. I use nothing else. Copper ones tend to be much heavier than non-copper ones and can actually over time put undue stress on the board around the cpu socket. Besides, I havent seen enough of a difference in temps when using copper versus non-copper to warrant about getting a copper one. Heres one from thermalright I like.....
    http://www.thermalright.com/new_a_page/product_page/cpu/si-128_se/product_cpu_cooler_si128se.html
For the fan, get a Thermaltake silent cat 120. Killer combo.

  • 3-day-old 13.3" MBP with rough sounding cooling fan

    Hi all,
I just purchased a new MBP with retina, 13" 3 GHZ Core i7. I should note that I'm a replacing a similar, 13"MBP (retina) that was stolen from me. The new machine is awesome. However, the cooling fan is much louder than my previous machine. It's not extremely obnoxious, but noticeably louder than the last unit. It basically sounds like the fan has a bad bearing or something. Is this something Apple will look at in regards to repair? I don't want it to become a much bigger problem, a short while down the road. I purchased the machine on the 4th.
    Thanks!

If you bought it from Apple, you have up to 14 days from receipt to return or exchange it.
After that, it is a repair problem, with its possible associated downtime.
Make an appointment at your local Apple store, if available, as soon as possible. Your serial number or product type will allow you to book the appointment online. Refusing to provide one of these will get you a never-ending run-around.

  • What happens with failure of one cooling fan?

The PXI-1010 chassis includes two cooling fans. Will the power supply shut down when one fan fails?

If one of the fans fails, this will not trigger the power supply to shut down automatically. The fan will not affect performance of the chassis in any way... other than the possibility of overheating. There are a few chassis (such as PXI-104x chassis) have LED indicators that will change depending on the operation of the fans, but the 1010 is not one of them.
