HDCP compliance?

iTunes now sells movies at the store. The movie studios make Apple use a copy protection scheme that will in some instances make the HD movie unplayable on your computer due to a your monitor or video card. You can find this exception in Apples' Terms of Sale:
HDMI
An HDCP connection is required in order to view movies (purchased or rented) and TV shows transmitted over HDMI.
HIGH DEFINITION PRODUCTS
Products in high definition resolution (HD) are viewable only on computers or TVs using your Apple TV; however, HD Products purchased also include a standard definition version delivered to your computer that may be transferred to your iPod or iPhone
So in closing, be aware whether or not you can view the HD version of a video before buying it.

An HDCP-compliant MONITOR/HDTV is required for HD Playback only when using a digital connection, such as HDMI or DVI. There is no such thing as an HDCP-compliant "connection." You are correct. The studios have this requirement, and this is not something new. My first Rear Projection HDTV with a DVI input was HDCP-compliant, and that dates back to 2003. If your HDTV is not HDCP-compliant (most are), you can connect your AppleTV using the Component-Video Output, since that is an analog output and is not protected by HDCP.

  • HDCP Compliance Issue, Everything is Compliant Though???

I am having a issue playing Blu Ray disks. I continue to get a HDCP compliance error everytime I try to play a Blu Ray video.  I am using arcsoft TMT6 on windows 7. I checked to make sure my monitor and video card are both HDCP compliant, and they both are. I used to be able to watch Blu Ray movies, and I'm not sure what changed, or why I cant watch them now. Also, I used cyberlink BluRay advisor and it said my "software player was not found" and "video connection type is digital without HDCP". Those are the only two problems found. I have a HP 2310 series wide lcd display and have a ATI Radeon HD 5570 video card, and am using a HDMI cable to the monitor. Can someone please help me with this.

    Hi Eric,
The Cyberlink BD Advisor only look for a Cyberlink BD software player.  You might very well have a perfectly good BD HDCP certified software player and Cyberlink won't indicate that you have it.  Your non-Cyberlink BD player might need updating to play the new BD titles.
The other issue might be a loose or faulty HDMI cable, a bad video card, corrupted video driver or a monitor problem.
Power off the PC and monitor. Check the cables for tightness.  Be sure that you monitor has only one video connection and that it is a HDMI cable. Now try a monitor reset by unplugging the monitor's power cord and then hold down the power button for 30 seconds.
If you still have issues then try reinstalling the video card driver or installing the latest AMD driver from the AMD web site.

  • Why is netflix having display problems on my macbook pro... HDCP compliance?

Watching Netflix and all of a sudden it says "Display Problems"  Make sure your monitor is HDCP Compliant and is not setup for mirror airplay??

The issue is from Safari defaulting to HTML5 vs using Silverlight like it did in Mavericks.
So the options are, if you want to use Safari goto your Netflix account, playback preferences and turn off HTML5. This will revert to Silverlight and will AirPlay fine*in Safari.
If you want to use HTML5, just leave the setting for HTML5 on in Netflix and use Chrome, Firefox, etc.
You can't currently have both Safari and HTML5 Netflix when using AirPlay. You'd think Safari would be a little bit more powerful with Apples stances on browser extensions.

  • Macbook Pro and NVIDIA GeForce 320M HDCP Compliance

Anyone know if the NVIDIA card is HDCP compliant? I want to purchase an external blu-ray burner for my laptop but want to make sure it will work first. I have found limited tech specs on this card on-line.

Yes, it is HDCP compliant. I'm not sure that is a guarantee that what you want to do will work however.

  • Apple TV and HDCP Compliance

What do I have to do to make my Apple TV HDCP compliant so that I can watch TV?

Ok but how do I get my Apple TV to work.  My software is updated. But I keep getting a notice to unhook and re hook up my HDMI cable. This is not working.  Is my Apple hardware non compatible?

  • ATV and HDCP Compliance

When trying to watch rented content, the ATV says that my connection is not HDCP Compliant and that I should use component cables. I'm using an HDMI cable connected directly to my HDTV. The users guide of my Mitsubishi WD52627 says that the HDMI ports are HDCP compliant. What gives? Is it my HDMI cable?

"This content requires HDCP for playback. HDCP isn't supported by your HDMI connection. Use the component video connection to watch this content."
This is Apple's deal not yours! If your TV is HDCP compliant then all should be well. I know this because mine is and I have been able to watch rented and purchased content up until two-three weeks ago. HDCP is a DRM related deal and Apple has yet to figure this out. I've been on the phone with Apple Care and the guy said uhhhh...I've talked with some other people and it hasn't popped up on anyone's radar. That's BS this forum is full of people affected by it. They don't have a solution as evidenced by repeated emails going unanswered even though through the support website they guarantee a reply within 48 hours.
I've localized the problem to movies bought through the AppleTV. TV shows don't exhibit the same problem and movies that I've purchased with my computer play on the AppleTV. I've purchased 17 movies through my AppleTV and none of them work anymore...after months of working. For me I think it has something to do with the latest iTunes update. None of the hardware has changed and I haven't introduced anything into the setup.
What gives Apple. Enough with the silence...if there's a problem then say so...I can wait. But the silence kills me.

  • HDCP problems with DirecTV and Toshiba 34HFX84

DirecTV pushed an update over the weekend and now I can't watch HBO because my system is not concluding that I have HDCP compliance.
My 34HFX84 is listed as HDCP Compliant. Toshina support validated this, and suggested it could be the cable, saying something about version 1.4 or greater.
    My questions:
    1) Does this make sense? How do I find a version number of a HDMI cable?
    2) Has anyone else seen this?

Could be Toshiba support is correct; changing to a HDMI 1.4 cable might actually fix the problem -
    http://www.hdmi.org/manufacturer/hdmi_1_4/hdmi_1_4_faq.aspx#1
    from the link -
"The HDMI 1.4 specification adds a data channel to the HDMI connection, enabling high-speed, bi-directional communication. "
"Will content distribution and recording be possible in a system connected via the HDMI Ethernet Channel?
Yes. The HDMI Ethernet Channel allows connected devices to share digital content in its native format. For instance, if it is protected by HDCP encryption, it will stay in its encrypted format, and can only be accessed if all the devices in the system are HDCP-compliant. Unprotected content, such as digital HD broadcast programming or user-generated HD video, will of course be free of any content protection."
No guarantees, but the info in the linked article sure makes it look like a 1.4 cable replacement might solve a lot of "gotcha" problems.

  • This content requires HDCP for playback problem! Apple TV2

Owned Apple TV for two weeks. Two weeks ago, everything was fine for films already in my iTunes library.
This week, when selecting play on a movie, I get the message 'This content requires HDCP for playback problem' inconsistently. Some vids work, some don't. Then they do then they don't! I have tried on a Samsung TV and a Sony Bravia? Same for both!
How do I resolve this. I have tried different HDMI ports, turned Apple TV 2 off and on. Tried different cables (Although my HDMI cable is the one I purchased from Apple).
Any suggestions? Is it something Apple need to fix? This is kinda embarrassing when I tell friends how good Apple TV is, get them round to watch a movie and inconsistently get this.
    Many Thanks for any help
    Dave.

I too sadly have this handshaking issue. I'm in Phoenix, AZ. Day one buyer for ATV2. Worked all of about two days in terms of streaming HD content from either my MAC or netflix. About the third time i tried to stream HD content from Netflix or Blu Ray digital copies from my Mac, I get the HDCP compliance message stating my display is not authorized.
I have tried every concievable combination of unplugging and rebooting of TV (Samsung 2005 DLP), ATV2, and HDMI switcher (Monoprice) and nothing will work. My DirecTV HD-DVR works like a charm. If I rent an HD pay per view from DirecTV, no problem. If I rent an HD movie on iTunes, won't display it due to the HDCP issue. I've NOT ONCE had an issue with my DirecTV HDDVR having an HDCP compliance issue and of course its connected to my TV via HDMI thru my monoprice HDMI four port switch.
I guess the only other thing I could try is exchanging the unit itself. But everything else works as advertised. It feels like this is just a software issue that needs to be patched, and fast.

  • Mac Mini, HDMI, iTunes Store HD content and HDCP

I have a few seasons of purchased HD TV shows, which of course require a HDCP-compliant display. With the following setup, I can not at present play these shows in HD:
    - Mac Mini (2010 with HDMI)
    - Monster HDMI cable
    - Sony KDS-50A2020 TV
This would leave me to believe that either the cable, the TV, or both are noncompliant.
The funny thing is, the same TV and cable worked with Blu-ray Discs on a PS3. If the PS3 required HDCP compliance to play BDs - which the internet seems to suggest - then that should prove that the cable and TV are in fact compliant.
In either case, aside from replacing the cable and or TV, is there a way to tell what iTunes doesn't like about my setup?

So is iTunes giving you that warning message that you need to use an HDCP compliant monitor?

  • 65H84 lost HDCP over HDMI

My 65H84 crt rear projection tv won't display any source over HDMI that is HDCP compliant (after working perfectly for many years).  I'm going to replace the HDMI module (MHDM01) - am I correct in assuming that the circuitry that handles the HDCP handshake is on that pcb?

I may be wrong but I don't think all movies require equal HDCP compliance, is it possible that it's simply the choice of movie.
Component will not work while the HDMI cable remains connected, are you sure you have removed it before trying component.

  • HDCP support for T60p Soundmax HD driver

    Hello,
I would like to be able to playback audio that requires HDCP compliance. When I try to play the HD source, it fails with an error that My audio card does not support protected audio playback.
I have tried to disable the digital audio out in the Soundmax control panel, but it does not help.
Is there a newer Soundmax HD driver available for Xp-32 bit ?

I tried many times to uninstall and re-install the driver and I'm having some really bad issues now.  So currently, if I try to record from the microphone, it will not work until I plug in an external mic first, then unplug it.  However, if I do the hack to unlock the wave-out as a recording device and install that driver, my internal microphone will work without plugging in and unplugging an external one.  The problem is that now upon every restart of the system, I get an error message stating that the SoundMax HD driver failed to load.  However, when I reinstall KB888111, which enables the HD audio bus, it works again until the next time I restart the sytsem.  The whole audio driver set is now totally shot .... can someone point me out to a fix?
On another note, I recall that the installation of the audio driver was paired with the modem driver as well.  I currently have the modem disabled since I don't use it.  Does disabling the modem have any impact on the system?

  • Can I watch an iTunes movie rental on a TV connected via mini displayport?

I'm not sure if there's been any headway with this, but I've got a mini displayport to HDMI adaptor on the way that I'm going to use to connect my MacBook Pro to my HDTV, effectively using the TV as an external monitor.
And of course, I want to watch some iTunes movie rentals on the TV instead of my laptop, but digging around the internet has shown that I might be facing an issue relating to the HDCP standard that would prevent me from being able to use my TV in this manner.
Is this still an issue? I have a fall 2009 MacBook Pro, which may be important, as I've read that Apple modified the mini displayport on the MacBooks in 2010.
Other than renting a movie as a sort of guinea pig with the possibility of being shot down and wasting my money, is there any way to know if this is going to work? Or is it simply a fact that any monitor/TV connected to my MacBook through the mini displayport is incompatible with HDCP, and I'm totally out of luck?
(Which, FYI Apple, is utter horse **** and is absolutely counter-productive to the notion of encouraging me to pay for digital entertainment.)
    What are your thoughts, folks?

If your HDTV is HDCP compliant, you probably will have no problems. But you might want to read this information which while written a while back still, to the best of my knowledge, applies:
    http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/16488
HDCP compliance is, from what I've read, rather a "rubber ruler" so even if your TV lists as being HDCP, it might or might not work correctly with your Mac. Testing with one movie first might avoid an expensive surprise.
As to your complaint to Apple, it probably wasn't up to Apple but instead was forced on them as part of the conditions by the content owners for licensing movies and shows to the iTunes Store. But feel free to comment to Apple via their feedback pages:

  • What's the solution to a frozen iTunes movie rental on a current Macbook Pro with current software? I think perhaps no one knows.

I rented Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Extended Version) tonight, because I'm taking my family to Universal's Wizarding World of Harry Potter tomorrow. This is the kind of event that can't happen just any ol' day; it's expensive, a big deal for everyone, and we were very excited to watch the first HP movie tonight to help set the tone for our getaway. 44 minutes into the movie, it froze, just before the "sorting hat" comes to life. Boy were the kids dissappointed. And the parents. Ugh.
I have a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 13" Macbook Pro with 8GB of memory, running OS X vs.10.6.8 with iTunes 10.5.2. I have rented movies many times from the iTunes Store without issue on this computer and also another. Once upon a time, I rented the HD version of a movie and it wouldn't play. I recieved a refund, and rented the non-HD version and it played without flaw, although it wasn't until the following day. In this case, tomorrow is too late, Apple.
Many thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this!
And is this the end of the world? No. However, I must say how dissappointed and irritated I am about this, and here is why: I can't believe that SO MANY people have this same exact problem--it's posted all over the internet--yet every thread I've seen has NO SOLUTION, and no responses from Apple employees. If the answer is out there somewhere, which I certainly don't doubt, how about making it a little EASIER TO FIND? From what I have read, this is a problem that has been occuring for years now.
We have been devout Apple customers--computers, iphones, ipods, ipads, itunes purchases out the wazoo--I'm a big supporter of the whole kit and kaboodle. I really regret not having simply rented this movie from Comcast on demand tonight, though. It was the same price. In fact, I would do that right now, however it's well past the kids bedtime. I wrongly assumed I would find a solution with a little searching after I saw how many people have had this same problem. My bad... I guess...
Honestly, I'm seeing myself using the iTunes Store as a last resort to rent a movie from now on. After you've gotten involved in a movie, it kind of ruins the mood when it stops playing, even if you do have the time to fiddle around troubleshooting or wait a day or two for a response.

  • Can I watch Blu-ray movies on my MacBook Pro 17-inch?

If this is possible at all, I think there are two or three issues to be addressed.
First, I understand that to display Blu-ray movies, the display must be HDCP compliant. All I know is that mine has adequate resolution (1920 x 1200). I called AppleCare and they could not verify HDCP compliance; however, they also did not find any information explicitly stating that it is not. Does anyone know the answer to this, and if it is indeed required?
Second, I need an external Blu-ray drive that will work on a Mac with OS X 10.6.4. Ideally it would not require an external power supply. I've got a laptop, so the more portable the solution, the better.
Third, I'm guessing I'll need new software to play the movies on the disc, rather than the pre-installed software that plays regular DVDs. I would prefer a Mac software solution; however, I do have Windows running under Parallels Desktop 5. I am concerned that if I go with a Windows solution (such as PowerDVD 10 Deluxe) playback could be choppy given the dual demands of Blu-Ray HD and the Windows virtual machine it's running on.
    Any advice? Thanks.

Find an external blu-ray player for OS X. Apple has yet to support Blu-Ray in any way, shape, or form

  • Blu Ray won't play.

    Hi all,
I am at the end of my rope with googling on this one.  I am hoping someone can help me.
I moved into a house that has a media room.  In it is a HTPC with the following characteristics:
HP Media center m9000t running Windows Vista
    Nvidia 8500GT video card
    Blu Ray player
The room had a low def projector and I upgraded to a:
    Mitsubishi HC7900
I did a fresh install of all the software, and downloaded all new updates (Vista SP 1being most pertinent)
The Blu Ray wasn't working and googling led to the following actions, all failing:
    1) HP's DVDPlay was freezing.  After crashing my computer over and over I finally uninstalled it.  Eventually I found forums where they reccomended Cyberspace Power DVD 10 which I downloaded.  With this, the Blu Ray wouldn't play.
    2) Downloaded Cyberspace BD advisor.  Says the monitor is not digital.
    3) Use NVIDIA control panel to set up dual monitors (mirror of the two with the projector as primary).  The regular monitor is hooked up via VGA.  The Mits projector by HDMI.  The control panel tells me the card, and monitor are HDCP compliant.  The projector projects the image.  But a Blu Ray won't play.  The BD advisor tells me now that the HDMI connection has given me a digital image but there is still an HDCP issue.
    4) Upgraded to NIVIDA 335.23.   Still have HDCP issue
    5) tried VLC player.  Won't work.
    5) Uninstalled 335.23, went to oldest NVIDIA driver I could find.  Still HDCP issue.
    6) upgraded PowerDVD to 14.  Still won't play.
Not sure what to do.  My components all claim HDCP compliance.  This includes my projector, the NVIDIA card, the NVIDIA control panel, and the Power DVD 14 softward.  BUt the BD Advisor says I have a digital signal but have an HDCP issue.
I would really like to make this work with what I have.  Rather not buy a bunch of new stuff.
    Thanks in advance.
    Scott
