HDCP error on MacBook Air (NOT using external display)

I just downloaded a HD (720p) movie through iTunes, and cannot play it on my Mac becuase of a HDCP non-compliance error.  I am running it directly on my MBA, not through an external display... I would have thought the MBA integrated display would be HDCP compliant!  Is this an error or am I wrong in assuming my MBA could play legally purchased HD movies?

Try a System Management Control reset (SMC)
Whilst the machine is plugged into power, Hold down the left side shift control and option buttons at the same time as the power on button.
Hold these down for 4 seconds and relese all at the same time.
If this fails then you may need to clear the caches folder for your user too.

  • How to charge mid 2011 macbook air battery using Thunderbolt display

While trying to organize all my computer miscellaneous (cords, adapters & so on), I came across an adapter on a little card with the comment, "For use with your Thunderbolt Display and Mac with MagSafe 2 port." Appears to be for charging my mid 2011 MacBook Air via the Thunderbolt Display -- what might be the advantages/disadvantages in doing so? I found the info. in the product manuals to be pretty skimpy about this.
    Thanks,
    Linda

So, I guess the adapter came with the display just in case I had a compatible Mac. I should have noted that on the card. Now, about the rest of the stuff in my Apple mystery box...that's for another day.
Thanks, seb101, for your quick reply!

  • Macbook Air not seeing external harddrive

I have a Seagate external drive I use to back up both my Mac desktop and Macbook air laptop. It's usually plugged into the desktop since that's non-mobile, but I unplug it and plug it into the laptop about once a month. It still works on the desktop just fine, the desktop recognizes it and is backing up to it as normal. But this most recent time I plugged the harddrive into my laptop, the laptop doesn't see it at all. Time Machine says it'll backup "when disk is plugged in", it's not showing up in the side of Finder, and it's not showing up in Disk Utility. I tried rebooting the laptop, nothing. I haven't updated the OS to Mavericks yet, though I just did on the desktop and it continues to read the external drive no problem.

  • I am having problems connecting my macbook air to an external display

I recently purchased a 2012 MacBook Air, and am currently running Mountain Lion.
When I try to connect an external VGA overhead projector, for use in a conference room, using the Thunderbolt to VGA adapter, my screen resolution changes, but nothing is projected from the overhead projector. I used to do this with my 2011 MacBook AIr and had no problems doing this.
What am I doing wrong? Is it Mountain Lion or a bug in the MacBook Air. I tried connecting to an overhead projector at my office and had no problems, but in my clients conference room I have no luck.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, I'm not finding success with this workaround.  I'm running Mountain Lion on a MacBook Air, with the micro-DVI to VGA adapter, and the projector is not detecting the computer (regardless of repeatedly turning the two machines on and off, in various orders).  I have been able to do this, prior to upgrading to Mountain Lion, with the same hardware configuration, so it seems that the problem is the software, not the hardware.
I do not see a Display icon in the menu bar, which is how I used to be able to switch.  The Display setting in System Preferences does not offer a solution (though I have selected the "Show mirroring options in menu bar when available" option.  I can't find a configuration of keys that will allow me to switch displays.
By the way, when I have both devices on, connect the VGA cable to the adapter, and then connect the adapter to the micro-DVI port, it shuts off my laptop.  I'm pretty sure that's not supposed to happen.
If anyone has figured out a reliable way to use a MacBook Air, running Mountain Lion, using a micro-DVI to VGA adapter, for an overhead project, please advise.

  • Macbook will not detect external display

Was using a $7 aftermarket minidisplay port to HDMI cable with success for about 2 months with no problems detecting external display.  Started having problems (it would randomly detect until it eventually would not at all) and tried all solutions I could find in discussion boards to no avail.  I recently bought a $40 cable from the apple store and it worked fine for about a month and now it only recognizes my external display about 50% of the time (which is how the problem began the first time).  Very frustrating!  What is the deal here?

Did you have any luck resolving this? I have had exactly the same issue when updating the EFI Firmware to Version 2.8 (the latest for a Mid-2013 MacBook Air 6.2 model) - MBA61.0099.B12
I've tried flushing the NVRAM/PRAM and also resetting the SMC but no joy. I'm trying to drive an AOC Q2963 monitor using a display port connector. Annoyingly, I don't think there's a way to rollback to a previous firmware version.

  • Macbook Air stopped detecting external displays

My MBA (Mid 2011) has stopped detecting ANY external display. Have tried different leads (MDP > HDMI and VGA) with no luch, My MBA (Mid 2011) has stopped detecting ANY external display. Has anyone had similar problems?

You should also ask this in the MacBook Air forum. This is the forum for the white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • Close the macbook pro when using external display

    Hi
I would like to know if is recomended to close the laptop when using an external display? i ask because i read somewhere that the system take ventilation through the keyboard? is better to work with the laptop always open? or doesn't matter if is closed?

    Third opinion...
I had a 2.16GHz 15" MacBook Pro that I used as a presentation machine at some trade shows in '07 and I once ran the machine with the lid closed, hooked up to an overhead projector looping a movie for 11 hours. When I finally shut it down for the night the machine was pretty warm (it was well ventilated) and was immediately usable. Out of curiosity the next day I ran it with a lid slightly cracked and the unit was significantly warmer at the completion of my day.
The only thing I could justify as the temperature difference is that the LCD was on and causing heat in addition to the video card. I guess I would have been curious to leave the lid slightly cracked and then manually set the backlight to off.

  • Macbook Pro not detecting external display

I can't seem to make this work. I'm using a MiniDP-DVI cable which is plugged into an DVI cable plugged into an external monitor. I know it works because I have tried it on other computers and it has worked on the Macbook (erratically).
I've reset the PRAM several times and it has not fixed the problem. I did it in this order:
    1. Remove adapter from computer
    2. Shutdown
    3. Press Option Command P R until the second chime is heard.
    4. Log on as usual
    5. Reconnect adapter to MBP
This is what the system log states when I plug the adapter in:

  • MacBook Shutdown when using external display (DLP TV)

I have a latest gen. MacBook. I just purchased the new wireless keyboard and mouse so that I can use the computer with my HD TV with VGA input. The setup works fine in two screen mode (laptop display as well as TV). However I want to use it with the TV as the only display.
I close the laptop and wake it up via the bluetooth keyboard with the TV attached. The screen comes on as it should and works fine for 3-5 seconds. Then the computer goes back to sleep. I don't understand what's wrong. Perhaps the laptop is looking for some type of response back from the TV? The same thing works fine on my Dell monitor. The computer stays awake with the monitor as the only display and the wireless keyboard and mouse as the only inputs.
My TV is a 61" Samsung DLP with VGA input. I'm using the new apple wireless keyboard and mighty mouse.
Does anyone have a similar setup that they can try this on for me? Has anyone run into the same issues?
    Thank you for your help.

One thing you've neglected to mention is whether you have the MacBook plugged into its AC adapter. The behavior you describe of the MB going right back to sleep is what happens if you try and do what your doing running from the MB battery. So check and make sure the AC adapter is connected and working.

  • I have a 17" Macbook pro with flickering red and cyan(blue) lines across the screen. The issue disappears temporarily when I tap on the computer, and the problem does not occur when I use external display or try to screen capture the problem.

I purchased my Macbook (17") through a certified apple tecnition in August 2012, it was refurbished and the motherboard was completely replaced. I do a lot of photo editing, but I have been unable to do so because of the red vibrating lines that interrupt my screen. The issue disappears temporarily when I tap on the computer, and the problem does not occur when I use external display or try to screen capture the problem. I brought the computer back to the technition I purchased it from and he said that it was a problem with my fan, so I have two new fans but the issue is still occuring. He says he doesnt know whats wrong. Does anyone have any information on this issue?
Here is an image of the issue
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/67839707@N08/8884847081/

I recommend having your Mac serviced by someone competent. A force sufficient to "blow apart" the fans was clearly excessive and may have damaged the display cable, as well as any number of other problems.
Dust is properly cleaned with a vacuum, preferably one designed for computer service, and they are not cheap.
Compressed air should never be used. It just blows dust everywhere, often into places where it can no longer be removed.

  • NEW MACBOOK AIR WONT RECOGNISE EXTERNAL HD NOW !

Well, I am almost on the verge of giving up - not only will this new MACBOOK AIR not link to the AIRPORT it also wont open my external hard drive with all my back up data on it.
I am in despair , I cant see the external hard drive in Disc Utilities , (its plugged into the mains ) and I am feeling  less than impressed with this new machine - nothing works on it at all  and I just cant recover anything from my back ups - we have the need for backing up drilled into us so why when I do everything I should, does this new machine not respond - the old one has no problems at all but I need to run a network now .
Can anyone help at all ?

    KarryGee
tried to access my recovered HD on my old machine.........- and that data was transferred from a PC
You didnt mention that initially, if the data on the HD came from a PC, then the HD is likely NTFS formatted and cannot be used with your Mac.
Youll need another HD and format same in EXFAT for read/write from/to both PC and MAC, however if you plan on using time machine with your Mac, the drive will need to be formatted in Mac OSX ext. journlaed (HFS+).
Please specify what your "older machine" is?
You said---"but I have just tried to access my recovered HD on my old machine and I no longer can"
if your older machine is a Mac, then it is likely that the WD software in conjunction with Mavericks has caused data corrupted (as in the links mentioned above).
If your older machine IS a PC, then the HD has likely failed OR MORE likely the SATA bridge card has failed.
You said---has completly ruined 7 years of work
No, if the SATA bridge card failed (very common actually), then the HD is fine, see full info about that sort of failure here:
Your dead external hard drive is likely fine! Great hope for your 'faulty' external HD

    Dell UltraSharp 30"

This is the main monitor setup w/o the Samsung:

The 30" is connect to the air using a MiniDP to DP connector and the other monitors are using Sewell DisplayLink USB to DVI connectors:
    http://sewelldirect.com/Sewell-Minideck-USB-to-DVI-Display-Adapter.asp
Everything seems to be working smoothly EXCEPT there are times when I bring the MacBook Air to the office and connect it and all the display settings do not seem to be saved. The arrangement and monitor rotation is not the way it was when I left.  I have even tired shutting the computer down, restarting it correcting the configuration and then saving and restarting again.  When it boots back up the rotation is correct (somtimes) but other settings such as arrangement or background may not be correct.
    Any thoughts?
I love the Air and I would hate to go back to my ThinkPad but if this won't work then I will need to.

Quick update, I downloaded the mostt recent drivers for the Sewell adapter and that seemed to work.  Which is strange because I thought i had done this previously.
None the less it looks like we are good to go now.

    Hi Lokesh,
    did you actually enter a number ( i.e. 70000001)?
Usually Stability studies are created using the external number range so that ringing names can be used for the studies:
    Example:
    Material: 000000000000000001  acetylsalicylic acid
    Stability study: ASA1
I hope that this information proves usefull.

  • Need help exporting from lightroom 4 on my Macbook Air with an external hard drive.

After importing photos to my new Macbook Air (2014) from external drive, it made me reformat my external drive.  After reformatting, I tried to export edited images back to my external drive and it says "photos missing or offline", even when external drive is connected.  How do I get my edited images back onto my reformatted external drive?

Ok, so at least you haven't lost the images.
The catalog knows "about" the images but not where they currently are. You cannot import them again because they have already been cataloged.
If the images are on the external drive in the location you want, the the procedure to re-connect is as follows.
Select one of the thumbnails. It should have an "!" or "?" on it (upper right). Click whichever it is and you will be asked to Locate the file. Navigate to the file to re locate it and make sure the check box "Find nearby images" is checked.
Lightroom will now relink all the images.
    Note:
I usually just import from my external hard drive and then export them back to the external hard drive when I finish editing them.
this is not a "correct" workflow when working with catalogs. The files remain on the external drive. The act of importing is only necessary once to catalog where the files are and to allow quick access to them via the Library. Editing them either in or outside of Lightroom via Photoshop does not require you to move the file.
