HDCP error using Airplay on ATV2

I can play YouTube content from inside ATV but when I try to Airplay it from my iPhone I get the HDCP error. This doesn't make sense. My TV's a two year old Sony Bravia but it must support HDCP for Youtube to play from inside ATV musn't it?

I am using a new Apple TV, JVC A/V Receiver and a Samsung 1080p LCD TV. All are connected with HDMI cables (I have tried my expensive HDMI cables as well as the $19 Apple HDMI cable).
This is what I have been able to work out:
I can start the system up to allow the Apple TV to play HDCP content. To do this, I:
-Turn off the Apple TV
-Turn on the TV
-Wait until the TV is on and displaying
-Turn on the JVC Receiver and put it on the correct source (Apple TV source)
-Wait until the JVC Receiver is completely up (about 4 seconds)
-Turn the Apple TV back on
After this, HDCP content works.
When I turn off the Receiver, HDCP content stops playing, and will not play again.
I can remedy that by repeating the above, OR
-Turn off Receiver
-Unplug Apple TV HDMI from Receiver
-Turn on Receiver
-Wait until Receiver is completely up
-Plug Apple TV HDMI in to the back
After this, the HDCP content works again.
From what I have read, there is a handshake between ATV and the device it is connected to. I imagine what I am doing is ultimately forcing the handshake to happen in a way the Apple TV needs.
All in all, I'm a little ****** that I have to go through this every time I power down my home theater system. My other option is to wire the Apple TV directly to the TV, and use the optical audio out to the receiver. Not really wanting to do that, though...
Any help in this area from Apple or otherwise would be greatly appreciated.

  • I have had my apple tv 2 for about 3 months which work perfectly fine when I use it with my iPad 3 ー all of the sudden I get the HDCP Error!  I read the forms and done everything!  Apple I name a loyal customer, please come out with an update soon!

I have had my apple tv 2 for about 3 months which work perfectly fine when I use it with my iPad 3 ー all of the sudden I get the HDCP Error!  I read the forms and done everything!  Apple I name a loyal customer, please come out with an update soon!

That's one of the weird things.. it recognizes it maybe 10% of the time. And usually, only after I do the two-button reset. Problem is.. since it won't charge above 2%, anytime I try to do a restore or anything like that using iTunes, my device shuts off and I lose whatever progress I'd made.
So, an update... after reading through a bunch of similar complaints (there are literally 1000's of them so there's NO WAY this isn't somehow ios7 related, thanks a lot APPLE ) I decided to try a restore in recovery mode. After 3 hours and several disconnections... I ended up having to just set it up as a new iPad, as the restore did nothing. Weirdly though... as I was doing the restore in recovery mode.. I noticed I'd gotten up to a 10% charge.. higher than it's been since September, so after setting it up as a new device, I turned it off and plugged it in using the wall charger. 2 hours later and I was up to 38%. Still not great, as my iPad, before ios7 could've fully charged twice in the amount of time it took for me to now get 28% more of a charge. And that's with a fully cleaned out device.. so that really ***** and I'm now more confused than ever.
But I'm gonna leave it overnight charging and see what I come up with tomorrow. Sadly, when I paid $600 for it in February, I never expected to have to play "wait and see" with it...

I get sound no video when using AirPlay.  Any ideas?

Do you get an "HDCP error"?
Since the last ATV software update, I have had  problems playing You Tube content from the iPad to the ATV using airplay, yet the same content from the You Tube channel on the ATV plays fine. I get the dreaded "HDCP error" which is nonsense, as YouTube content does not have this protection. Netflix also gives the same error. (I have posted seperately about this problem.)
I have had a couple of years of fault-free playing with my setup, the only thing that has changed is the Apple ATV software. Ergo, they need to fix whatever bug they introduced. None of the recommended "fixes" have worked.

  • Apple TV 3 HDCP Error

Hi, I have an Apple TV 3. I can watch videos from the apple tv itself like the trailer and movies. However, whenever I tried airplaying from my iPad device. The video loads for a few seconds and I will get a HDCP Error. I've checked up the solution and many of you suggested the handshake error, and have to remove the cables etc. But I've done this countless time and this definitely isn't the issue. It use to work with airplay when I just got it, the problem definitely isn't with the TV or the Cable. Can someone help me?

Playing DRM movies from your ATV, does not prove that it used nor negotiated HDCP successfully.
HDCP is not part of apples DRM, it is part of the Bluray standard to protect the link from a Bluray player to the TV and the Apple TV may be exempt from its use.
But AirPlay is even used on my Pioneer AVR, so maybe Apple had to sign up to the HDCP protection, since they might want to include AirPlay in future TV sets to make HDMI cables redundant.
In any case there is any number of HD media that will play thru HDMI without an HDCP link, HDCP is not required for everything sent over HDMI.
I'm just saying that maybe AirPlay had to include HDCP and maybe  the ATV is exempt, that is all I was trying to say.
I also had an bad experience with HDCP, to the point that I thought I needed a new TV, but which turned out to be something wrong in the HDMI cable. The cable worked or not worked depending on how I twisted or bent the cable coming out of the tv.
Now I have writers cramp and an ugly wordy reply!

  • HDCP error death

I started getting the HDCP error recently and have been unable to watch any trailers and the film i rented. After calling Apple support they suggested that my Tv is not HDCP compliant. (Polaroid FLU-2632)
it is a new ATV purchased in June 2012 with a new high speed HDMI cable.
OK, so it would be good to have some forewarning that i may not be able to use the services provided when purchasing?
However, i now get the error message when trying to stream youtube and my own home movies over airplay. I certainly have not copyright protected my own fims.
Apple support is not available on a sunday, but am not sure that they know any more than i do?
Has anyone had the problem with airplay and any luck?
    thanks

Have you checked with your manufacturer if the TV supports HDMI.
The requirements are stated reasonably clearly.
Try restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds, or resetting it using the reset option under general.
Check that the HDMI cable is correctly seated at both ends.
Try disconnecting the cable and connecting it again.
    Try another HDMI cable.
Try the Apple TV with another TV

  • HDCP error messages

I just started receiving HDCP error messages regularly for content that up until now had played fine.  I have HDMI 1.4 cables and a Samsung LCD which the Apple TV 2 is connected to. The content is coming off of an iMac running 10.6.7 and iTunes 10.3.1 (55) using Airplay. Both devices connect to my home network wirelessly via an Airport Extreme with 802.11n.
This AppleTV 2 experience has been horrible. It's been the hardware version of MobileMe.

I note all the things you have done, but did you try another cable. If rebooting the Apple TV temporarily resolves the issue, then you may indeed have a faulty HDMI card either on the Apple TV or the TV but it's far more likely to be a conflict caused by switching or cabling problem.
I'm not at all swayed by the wiki article, indeed I haven't even looked at it, wiki articles are written by ordinary people who are inclined to get things wrong in much the same way as you and I are. If you are happy in the thought that you have an HDMI 1.4 cable then that's all that matters, however you are the victim of a marketing ploy and perhaps you should be aware that the HDMI standards have actually forbidden cables to be marketed that way since 2008.
HDMI 1.4 is an HDMI standard, it does have more features than the standards that preceded it, but it doesn't require a different cable than 1.3 or indeed 1.2 did. The two categories of cable have the same number of connectors and the only difference is the bandwidth they are capable of communicating between devices (75 MHz for cat 1 and 340 Mhz for cat 2). HDMI cables do now have the option of carrying ethernet, but the range of cables has simply been extended to cat 1 and cat 2 with or without ethernet.
Of the other issues, I agree that listings of content in large libraries is poor and a definite step backwards from the previous model. The issue with the network time server though suggests the problem is with your network or its settings not the Apple TV. Scrubbing through a movie will entirely depend on how much of the movie has downloaded to the Apple TV, so yes these features may not work well for the first few moments after you start a download, but they will be significantly exaggerated if you have a problem with your network.

  • Hdcp error on i Mac?

I suddenly get a message of hdcp error when trying to watch films. There used to be no problem watching these films previously. What is the issue?

I also started getting this error this week.  I have a 27" iMac that's my home media server, and stream movies to my Apple TV, another iMac in the Kitchen, and to my iPad when exercising.
I was attempting to watch a new movie purchase a couple of days ago, and the Apple TV just gave me the spinning circle, but never started the movie.  So, I went to my Office 27" iMac to see what was wrong, and discovered I couldn't play it there, either on my external 27" Thunderbolt display, or on the built-in 27" display.  iTunes was giving me the HDCP error box on a gray space in the iTunes window.
I resolved the issue that evening by rebooting the Apple TV, which then allowed the movie to stream fine from the 27" Office iMac.  After watching the movie, later that evening I tried it again on the 27" iMac, and the movie was playing fine, without the HDCP error message.  Odd, but it was working.
I downloaded another movie last night, and tried to play it on the 27" Office iMac immediately, and again got the HDCP error.  This time I resolved it by going to the Kitchen 21" iMac and streaming the movie to there.  It played fine in the Kitchen, and after that test, it played fine again on the 27" Office iMac source computer.  Again, odd, but it's working again.
I contacted AppleCare while I was testing things this morning, and they suggested the Disk Utility/Repair Disk option, which I ran.  It didn't find any errors, but it's a painless thing to try, and with the SSD it went really fast.
I'm running the latest build of Yosemite (10.10.2/build 14C109) on my Macs, and iTunes 12.1.0.50 on my Macs.  I also ran the 10.10.2 Combo update this morning, just in case it's a corrupted driver issue.  I've found in the past that incremental/delta updates can lead to a build-up of damaged/corrupted files over time, so running the combo replaces everything that doesn't match the latest build.  Hopefully, today's combo update and permissions repair will resolve this issue for me for now.

  • HDMI to VGA output possible (or will I get HDCP errors)?

    Hello.
Does anyone know if it's possible to use an HDMI-to-VGA cable with the ATV (gen2)? I purchased an ATV for my parents and they can't use it as every time they go to play a movie rental or stream Netflix, they get an HDCP error saying "the connection doesn't support HDCP".
I have confirmed their TVs HDMI (v1.3) ports all supports HDCP and I have also used various HDMI cables, but nothing I do works — it always results in an HDCP error.
They have a VGA port available on their TV and I'm wondering if it would be possible to use an HDMI-to-VGA cable to play content? Or would this also result in an HDCP error?
My only other option seems to be to return the ATV?
    Thanks,
    Kristin.

On my parents TV (32" LG LCD), I have tried various cables, etc. but can never get the ATV to play protected content. The first thing I did was take it home and plug it in, using the exact same cables, to my TV (42" LG LCD). Worked fine. I then tried with the 3 other HDMI cables I'd been trying at my parents house. All worked fine.
This initially led me to believe it was an issue with their TV. So, I attached a number of other HDMI devices (that require HDCP) to their TV, and all worked fine, no errors. I then dealt with LG on this and they determined that everything was fine with the TV, especially since other HDMI-based devices requiring HDCP had no issues.
So, at this point, the only thing left is that the ATV just doesn't like their particular TV. These boards are flooded with this issue on various models/brands of TV. I don't think there's any real solution other than returning the ATV. It's a bummer. I absolutely love my ATV and I know they would have too. Once again, shoddy copyright protection wins again.
    Thanks,
    k.

  • HDCP Error Message

I have had my Apple TV about 90 days now and have had no problem in playing movies rented from Apple.  Now when I try to watch one, it starts an plays for about 10 or 15 seconds, then freezes.  I try to play it again, and I get an HDCP error message saying that I am either not using an HDMI cable or it is not properly connected to an HDTV.  Neither is true.  And nothing has changed with my setup.  I tried restoring and resetting to the original factory settings, and one time it did fix this, but now it does not.  What should I do?

I have an LED TV that is less than 6 months old (and my ATV is using the HDMI cable that freakin' came with it!) and I have been watching movies on it just fine until a recent up date and then have had the same HDCP problem that everyone else is posting about. Here is the only way I found to resolve it (besides the not helpful suggestion of "buy a new TV" ):
    On Apple tv go to:
    Settings
    General
    Reset
Reset all Settings (make sure you don't click Restore as it automatically updates the latest firmware).
You will have to go in and re-enter all your user info after doing this, but it fixed my HDCP error message problem and all my purchased movies are now playing like they should. Apple fail on this one as a lot of people seem to be having this problem and Apple should have at the very least warned everyone that this might occur.

  • IPad crashes ATV when using Airplay

Everytime I try to use airplay on my iPad it crashes my wifi, I get a message saying it had an error loading content then just crashes. I have to turn my iPad and ATV off sometimes even restarting my ATV before i can use ATV even then It might not work and I just have to wait for everything to reconnect itself. Im at a loss as to what causes the problem or how to cure it any help would be appreciated.

Well, seem it was a hardware failure.
Went to the Apple Store and got the device replaced...

  • 55SL412U + VSX-1019AH HDCP error

I have a 55SL412U connected via HDMI 1.3 to a Pioneer VSX-1019AH receiver. If I turn on the receiver before the TV, about 98% of the time the receiver will show "HDCP error" and then turn off a few seconds later. If I turn the TV on first, and wait a few seconds, it works fine.
This TV replaced a Sharp Aquos that was hooked up the exact same way (same cable, and nothing else has changed), and that TV worked fine.
Any ideas what is causing this, or how I can avoid it?  It wouldn't be such a big problem if 1) the TV was more reliable while using a Logitech Harmony remote, and 2) it had discrete IR codes.
      1) On both the Logitech and another programmable remote, I have to point the remotes directly at the TV and press power several times before the TV finally registers it. The OEM remote works fine, and at much wider angles.
      2) Because I can only program "power toggle" and not separate on/off, and due to the reliability issues, it makes it very difficult to use the harmony to turn things on in the right order. I often end up just using the OEM remote for power and then using the harmony to control it afterwards.
It's kind of a crazy situation for a new TV to be in, certainly not what I'd expect from a piece of electronics bought in 2011.
    Any advice?

If I turn on just the receiver, it works fine, and if I use a source that is playing audio, the audio comes through fine.
If I turn on the TV at any point after the receiver is on (up to a couple of minutes, I've never specifically waited longer than that), the receiver shows "HDCP error" and then turns off a few seconds later.

  • HDCP error with new HDCP compliant monitor

I just bought a new Asus VE228H monitor.  I have a ATI Radeon HD 4200, HDCP compliant video card and I am running Windows 7 and iTunes 12.1.1.4.  Even though the new monitor is HDCP compliant, I still get an HDCP error in iTunes.  I replaced the cable with a new HDMI cable and I still get the error.  I have tried searching online for a solution, but haven't found a solution.  Thanks in advance for your help.

    SUCCESS ....... for now ......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i have now got my atv2 unit to power back on - and we can play the rented SD movie which is playing now to a happy family....
No HDCP error message appeared this time.
This what we did to fix our issues....
    1) Pressed the HDMI cable more firmly into the HDMI port into TV - this allowed the ATV2 to actually show/reappear onto the tv panel.
    2) Plugged both power leads for TV and ATV DIRECTLY into wall. (Previously, we had both AC leads plugged into a 4x multi power board and had this plugged into the wall.
We started the SD movie and no HDCP error appeared and movie is still playing as i type...
Now, to repeat this error/diagnostic, we then plugged the TV power lead back into the 4 x multi power board and plugged the board back into the wall. Immediately, the dreaded HDCP error re-appeared. We then replugged TV back into wall directly and no HDCP error message.
    Hypothesis #1 :
Now, this 4 x multi power board also had our DVD player and stereo connected to it. Perhaps our DVD (potential recording device) was being detected and hence the HDCP barrier came up so that we were not able to record this movie.... just a hunch but sounds plausible.....
    Hypothesis #2 :
Also, this 4 x multi power board was within immediate vacinity of the ATV2 unit. Possible interference.....
When the 'dust' settles and the family finishes watching the movies, (1 x HD , 1 x SD), i will plug the 4 x multi power board into another AC wall socket way out of the way of the ATV2 unit (around 4m) and try to repeat this error to validate my hypotheses - noted above.
I will report findings later in around 6 hours...
    thanks for your help people...
