HDCP issue, NO EXTERNAL DISPLAY!

Today I went into my itunes (on my Macbook Pro) and attempted to watch a movie that I bought several months ago and have watched multiple times with no issue.  However it wouldn't play and a window popped up saying that the movie could not be displayed as I needed a device that was HDCP compatible.  I tried to watch something else, this time a tv show that I've watched on my Mac before, and the same message popped up.  I am NOT using an external display, and these are not newly purchased movies/tv shows.  Every single TV how and movie in my itunes library, even the ones that I did not purchase in HD have this message pop up when I attempt to play them.  All these are videos that have worked on my Mac before, one of them even yesterday.  Help?!

You may want to ask this in the iTunes forum in case they have any perspective on this.

  • Issues with External Displays on my Macbook Pro Retina

    Hello -
My apologies for starting a second thread back to back, but I thought I'd keep these two issues separate
I've been using two external displays off of my Macbook Pro Retina for some time - one off of the HDMI port and the other off of a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter.  Everything was absolutely perfect until the most recent update.  Immediately after that, whenever the macbook wakes up, the two external displays go into this black and white snowy mode (like the HBO logo, or that thing from poltergeist) and takes a minute or two to start working properly.  Any suggestions on how I can fix this?
    Thanks.

    Hi there,
Just browsed the forum and found a fix which solve the issue in my context: Google Chrome Play Music app was actually swallowing the media keys events, preventing iTunes to get them.
Still don't really understand why it impacts only iTunes in my case, however once the Play Music app uninstalled from Chrome via the Extensions pane of the Settings page, iTunes got its media keys events back.
    See this thread for reference:

  • Solution for sleep issues with external display?

I had an Early 2011 Macbook Pro that worked quite well with an external display.  I now have a Mid 2012 Macbook Pro (bought 5 days ago, and running 10.10.3) that will not consistently work with the same external monitor.
I had it working yesterday for a few hours only if I left the MBP with the top open (both the MBP screen and external monitor stayed lit).  But, today it is back to freezing each time the monitor is connected to it.
    I have tried:
    1.  Connecting the external monitor to the MBP with the top open.  Results in the MBP screen now going dark and no signal being passed to the external monitor.  If the external monitor is disconnected, the MBP screens stays dark and the computer is unresponsive requiring a hard restart.
    2.  Connecting the external monitor to the MBP with the top closed.  Results in no signal being sent to the external monitor.  Disconnecting the external monitor and reopening the MBP yields, again, and unresponsive computer which requires a hard restart.
I have tried three different external monitors, all giving the same result.  The MBP is connect to external power, and I am running the latest OS (10.10.3).
Any suggestions before I return this to the Apple store in a rage?  :-)

    Hello there, Gaflin.
I'm sorry to hear you're having so much trouble getting your external display to work the way you are expecting with your new MacBook Pro. The following Knowledge Base article provides a great checklist of steps for troubleshooting the issue you seem to be describing:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays - Apple Support
No video or no signal, image distortion, "snow," or flickering
    Check connections
When using an external display be sure to check the following:
If you're using an Apple notebook, confirm the AC power cable or adapter is securely connected to the computer and the cable providing power to the display is also secure. It is always good to have your notebook connected to AC power when an external display is in use.
Confirm display adapters are fully seated in their respective connections and that they are supported models and for the computer and display. Refer to these articles to assist you with adapter compatibility and further configuration information:
    Monitor and Display Adapter Table
About Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters
Apple Mini DisplayPort adapters: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Thunderbolt ports and displays: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Remove all display cable extenders, KVM switches, or other like devices and retest to determine if the issue is resolved.
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Using Closed lid, Extended Desktop, or Mirroring display modes
When using multiple displays, information can be presented in a number of ways. For more information and what modes are supported by your Apple product refer to:

  • Possible issue with external displays

Ive been looking into why my latest and greatest g4 1.67 17" powerbook runs my copy of Aperture like a dog with 1 leg and i think it could be due to the external 23" display i use with this laptop.
With that amount of screen, the GPU must have to allocate a fair amount just to run the display needed, thus distracting from the overall amount that Aperture is allocated.
I know apple mentioned that external displays work well with the powerbook series, but what i feel they forget to mention that if you expect to run aperture with this kind of setup, your looking at a pretty slow machine full stop.
Digging through the apple developer notes seems to confirm this and at the moment ive not been able to get any information from apple regarding this issue

I doubt it. Your machine should have the 128MB graphics card.
Internal screen 1680x1050x3 = 5.292MB for the main screen buffer.
External screen 1920x1200x3 = 6.912MB for the main screen buffer.
Even with extra VRAM taken up by Quartz Extreme, the external screen isn't going to be using a huge amount of VRAM out of 128MB.
The real test, of course, is to see if the performance is the same without the external display.

  • Issue with external display darkening via HDMI on macbook air using VLC

I had a 2010 macbook pro which never had this issue.
When I play a downloaded movie on macbook air in VLC anywhere from 45 min to 1 hour the tv will darken to barely see anything, I then have to hit esc to take VLC out of full screen mode then select full screen mode again and the tv is back to normal brightness showing movie.
This does not happen with Miro, but most of the downloaded movies (avi) do not have sound in Miro which is why I use VLC when Miro has no sound for a particular movie.
Anyone run into this issue before with VLC on a macbook air using mini display port to HDMI on a TV?
This wouldnt be an issue if the sound worked in Miro for these movies! Some AVI files do have sound in Miro but most do not.
    Thanks!!!

Bought the mini display port -> dvi adaptor, plugged in the dvi and everything seems to be fixed.
Nice crisp 1920x1080 display, no shivers...
Looks like the signal from vga is not robust enough for this resolution.
    Solved.

  • MacBook Pro 13" Early 2011 - External display issues

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro 13" (2.7GHz version) that I am using with an external non-Apple display.  I am having issues when MBP goes to sleep or trys to sleep the display.  The external display exibits one of a number of problems:  goes dark but does not power off the backlight or freezes up and requires being powered off then back on.  My display is an ASUS VW266H but it seems like this problem, or other similar problems, are happening with other non-Apple displays.
In calling Apple tech support of 5/27/11 they indicated that this is a known bug and they are working on a fix.  There was software update released 5/4/11 to  "improve graphics stability, address issues with external display" named MacBook Pro Software Update 1.4 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1382).  I downloaded this and applied it but it made no difference.
I experienced these problems with three different video adapters:  Apple's own mini DP to DVI, Belkin mini DP to HDMI and another brand of mini DP to HDMI also sold by the Apple store.
    So the questions are:
    1) Will Apple release another updated to address this incompatability or are they done with the issue given that they released the update mentioned above?
    2) Has anyone compiled a list of monitors that are know to work with these most recent MacBook Pros (the early 2011 versions with the Thunderbolt/mini DP combined ports)?
If you have used the MacBook Pro 13" early 2011 with an external monitor please respond to this post with your experiences so we can all know what works.

With my new 2011 13" MBP I'm having no latency issues using my '08 Samsung SyncMaster 2253BW DVI (digital) monitor. Sleep function awakens fine, goes to sleep 3-4 sec.
I'm using a cheapie model Syba MDP to DVI connector; here on Amazon:
    http://www.amazon.com/Syba-High-Quality-DisplayPort-Adapter/dp/B00342UT02/ref=sr _1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1307389450&sr=8-1
I bought 2 in case one craps out on me...knock on wood. Good luck hope you find a solution.

  • No Wireless Internet with External Display, Other Issues

    Hello,
When I connect an external monitor to my MBA, I lose my connection to the Internet. The wi-fi signal remains strong, but pages will not load (I tried many) and I cannot retrieve email. The connection times out when I try to ping as well. This occurs whether I have the MBA open or closed. The loss of Internet happens immediately when I connect an external display using the supplied dongle, and returns the moment I disconnect it. It is clearly an issue with external displays.
On the advice of an Apple Genius, I also tried disabling bluetooth. I did so, and turned off all my bluetooth devices (Apple keyboard and mouse, iPhone), but the problems persist.
The other trouble I am having is difficulty connecting to a network for the first time in a session. In other words, I was connected all day yesterday, take the MBA home, and return to the office the next day. MBA takes a long time to see the network, then fails to accept the password. If I carry the MBA closer to the wireless router, it finds and connects automatically as I'd saved my password. When I return to my desk, I remain connected with full signal strength. This has happened in two locations, one with an Airport Extreme, the other with a Netopia 802.11g router. When my Macbook Pro is sitting right next to the MBA, it recognizes and connects to the same networks almost instantaneously.
Anyone have any suggestions? Much appreciated.

Just a quick update... I was on the phone with Apple Support on Saturday morning and I thought we were making progress. The basic idea behind the proposed solution was that there was some "Preferences" that were causing the problem. We started over with a clean Preferences folder and tried connecting up the external monitor. At first, this approach was showing progress. The suggestion was to copy over my original Preferences (I had made a backup copy) just a few at a time until we figured out which ones caused the problem. The problem with this approach is that immediately after I got off the phone, the internet started not to work again. So, even with a clean Preferences folder, the internet would quit working after connecting up the external monitor.
So, I'm back to the drawing board. I have since restored my Preferences folder and I don't have my external monitor and internet working at the same time. BTW, I also upgraded to 10.5.3 and it didn't help.
    Still bummed,
    Kevin

  • External display no longer detected

I was prompted to install the iMacEFIUpdate1.7 & ThunderboltSoftwareUpdate1.1 automatically this evening and after the update my external display is no longer being detected, before the update everything was working fine.  Its connected from one of the thunderbolt ports to an HDMI port on the display
I've tried to manually install the updates again, the ThunderboltSoftwareUpdate1.1 installed again with no errors but the EFI update pkg will not run, if gives me a message saying that 'The software is not supported on your system.'
I've rebooted numerous times, tried different display ports and a different cables but nothing seems to work. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
(I'm also running 10.7.2 on a 3.4GHz intel core i7, not sure if that helps)

I too am having issues getting external display activated for two different animation programs. One worked for a while, then the "Full Screen" option failed. It did not work on the other animation program (Modul8 & Arkaos). I'm on MBP and upgrated today to 10.5.6 which could be the source of the problem. I don't know what other connector to get between the cable from the monitor into the computer. Also, the output window (in Modul8) no longer works, even without full screen mode activated. I've quit program, rebooted, turned off monitor.
I've another cable for video projection I may try later.
External monitor is seen by system and is otherwise functional.
Help! I've work to do. Thanks.

  • T540p+UltraDock+external display

    Hi,
I'm having problems with T540p with latest bios update.
I'm using Dell U2713hm with ThinkPad Ultra Dock 135W (40A20135XX)
i have both the 170w and 135w adapters for dock. and my dock has a 2.22.000 firmware.
I have updated my nvidia and intel  VGA drivers as it was recomended here.
now the problem is. when i put my laptop to the dock,  win8.1 decides, that this is it and the screen goes blank and my external dysplay says there is no signal. i take ou of my dock and screen don't come back.
I do a hard reset(hold down the power button) put it back to the dock and start again. And again nothing, i take my t540p out of the dock and windows login screen appears. and that is when im lucky.
But i have dual videos, intel and nvidias 730.
and the same thing all of the time, tried different cabels and differed drivers and different adapter. send my laptop to my dealership and it came back .. still the same problem.
im trying to connect 1 screen using DP port1 and a DP to DP cable not nothing.
i have tried most of the things recomended in here, but what now ?

    Hi Smotion123,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing issues with External display when you connect to Ultradock station your ThinkPad T540p.
Have you checked if the Display is set to Discrete Graphic in BIOS – Config – Display option.
    Hope this helps.

  • Flash not supported on external display?

    Hi,
With my MacBook, I use an external display all the time. It works perfect, exept that most of the 'in-browser' videos and all flash items (lots of them in recent websites) just aren't shown on the external display. So, whenever it happens, I have to drag the screen over to my MacBood display for it to work. Is this a driver issue? (external display is a Samsung SyncMaster 172v)

    Very strange issue,
A screen is not aware of the content which it displays.
not sure what the problem is there!
So if you drag the window to the macbook screen the content plays?

  • Macbook External Display

I've replied to a similar problem to this in one of the other catagories, but I thought I'd make a new thread in the display catagory.
I've been reading about people having issues with external displays not showing up on macbooks, for no apparent reason in some cases. That seems to be my issue as well but I have two points that people may find interesting.
Point 2 in particular I think should get some attention! Something "just works" in XP but not OS X?
Firstly the issue is with a Macbook black c2d late 2006, and a 19" xerox monitor connected using a mini-dvi connection into a vga apapter to the monitor's integrated dvi connection (the vga adapter is there because the mini-dvi to dvi adapter doesn't fit. The monitor has a dvi-i connection - it has extra pins and doesn't fit into the apple mini-dvi to dvi connection (this is dvi-d), which I discovered after I had already bought the useless connection!)
    1. When I did initially connect the monitor the screen did show up, but while I was arranging the monitor and macbook around the desk I knocked out the mini-dvi adapter. I could never get the screen back after that, but it still does show up in the Display Preferences Panel. (no it's not damaged, see point 2.) No amount of pressing F7, rebooting, switching resolutions, or changing Display profiles seem to bring it back.
    2. I'm a switcher (Macbook black c2d - really impressed by the way, just this one issue) so to smooth the process I used bootcamp to put xp on a small partition. The screen works perfectly in XP, in various different resolutions. Which is very annoying - I didn't buy a macbook to use xp!
I think that I have addressed all the obvious ways to pick up the display, and I have gone through the suggestions from other posts, but nothing. Not even a flicker. I don't have another Mac to test the screen on, but I do have another XP laptop, and again that works fine.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
    Macbook Black c2d, early 2007   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Update: Well unfortunately my credit card has taken enough of a hammering lately (I'm only home from my honeymoon a few weeks), so not having an apple care plan on the Macbook I didn't get too far with Apple support.
The new plan of action is... give up. I have to assume that the issue is just something to do with OSX not liking the mini-dvi -> vga adapter -> dvi adapter that I had to use, and MS just doesn't have a problem with it. A pain, but it is a nice monitor so I don't think I will have a problem giving/selling it to one of my MS using mates.
I'll mark this one answered - kinda

  • MBP no longer drives external display @ 1920x1200

I have been using an external LaCie 526 display on my MBP at the native res of 1920x1200 for almost a year. Today after running a keynote presentation on an LCD projector (may be coincidental) I can only get the dvi to drive it at 1280x720. All of the standard rubber chicken tricks don't have any effect (reset PR, detect displays, turn on/off mirroring, etc). Like many others in this forum using the DVI to analog svga connection does allow the higher res.
    Any suggestions much appreciated.

Lots of people are having issues with external displays since there was a manufacturing defect with the nVidia 8600M graphics chip inside the Macbook Pro. You may want to run the Apple Hardware Test from the cd your Mac came with and see if it gives you any errors with the video controller.

  • I have a 17" Macbook pro with flickering red and cyan(blue) lines across the screen. The issue disappears temporarily when I tap on the computer, and the problem does not occur when I use external display or try to screen capture the problem.

I purchased my Macbook (17") through a certified apple tecnition in August 2012, it was refurbished and the motherboard was completely replaced. I do a lot of photo editing, but I have been unable to do so because of the red vibrating lines that interrupt my screen. The issue disappears temporarily when I tap on the computer, and the problem does not occur when I use external display or try to screen capture the problem. I brought the computer back to the technition I purchased it from and he said that it was a problem with my fan, so I have two new fans but the issue is still occuring. He says he doesnt know whats wrong. Does anyone have any information on this issue?
Here is an image of the issue
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/67839707@N08/8884847081/

I recommend having your Mac serviced by someone competent. A force sufficient to "blow apart" the fans was clearly excessive and may have damaged the display cable, as well as any number of other problems.
Dust is properly cleaned with a vacuum, preferably one designed for computer service, and they are not cheap.
Compressed air should never be used. It just blows dust everywhere, often into places where it can no longer be removed.

  • Display issue coming out of sleep (w/ external display)

    Hey everyone,
I've a MacBook Pro with Retina display. running 10.8.2 (and Win7 x64, via Bootcamp).
I somtimes experience trouble coming out of sleep with no external display connected, if the MacBook was connected to an external display when I sent it to sleep and the integrated display's brightness was turned all the way down. Basically, the MacBook's integrated display won't light up. I then need to hold down the power button until the machine powers off, and start it up again. Only then will the display come on, and the machine start normally.
I've been observing this with both an external Thunderbolt Display, and a TV connected through the HDMI port. I don't think this is a Mac OS issue, as I've seen similar behavior on this same machine, running Windows, under Bootcamp.
An example scenario: I'll be using the Thunderbolt Display, or watching a movie on my TV, with the integrated display's brightness turned all the way down, and then, while the display is still connected, I will close the lid - The machine will go to sleep. I will then come the next day, and while the computer is asleep, disconnect the external display, and open the lid. The MacBook's integrated display will not light up, the brightness keys will not respond, and I will need to force-shutdown the machine, and start it again - it will then start up, and usually fall back to the lowest display resolution setting (even though I always use much higher resolutions on both the integrated and external displays).
I'm guessing this is happening because the computer is expecting the external display that was connected to it, during its last operation, to still be available, and when it's not - it panics!
Also, I had times where this happened, and a force-shutdown would not do the trick. I had to actually connect back to the external display, wait for the machine to start normally, take the integrated display's brightness back up, and disconnect the external display. The machine would then resume normal operation, and I would be able to disconnect the external display and work on the integrated display.
Has anyone else experienced this, or anything similar?

There we go. Here's the complete Console report, up until the reboot, which fixed things. I can't make anything out of this, but perhaps someone else can.

  • External display and sleep issues

A 15-inch MacBook Pro worked fine with an external display and keyboard prior to the 10.5.2 update. After the update the external display goes dark when the laptop is closed. Hitting the external keyboard momentarily wakes up the external display but then it almost immediately goes back to sleep. It's as if the MBP thinks it's in battery mode and not plugged into an AC outlet.
All Energy Saver settings are to keep the display awake. Could this be a corrupt driver or some other issue?
    Thanks.

Theres been a lot of disscussion about this and it's a BIG problem. Check this out:

A lot of us are having the following problems after the graphic update:
-not waking from sleep (waking, but display staying dark, restart is only solution)
-not being able to use in clamshell mode (with external monitor)
-not being able to run external monitor at full resolution
I've also had some weird bugs like the settings and calibration of my external somehow coming over to my MBP monitor after disconnecting the them.
I hope Apple can fix this.
