HDCP monitor/tv

i do a lot of final cut studio work and i recently sold my g5 for a MBP since i do a lot more onset editing. However, I was looking to create more workspace by adding another monitor. After looking around, i decided to get something that had HDCP capabilities. However, upon looking around, I noticed that an LCD HDTV was much bigger and cheaper than a monitor. So, I guess i'm missing something, but i cant figure out the difference between the TV and monitor in terms of quality other than the monitor has a better resolution. Any help on the matter?

these are generalizations, so not always true, but...
Computer monitors (CM) are designed to be viewed within inches of the eyes, so their dot pitch must be a very small value. Consumer electronics (CE) are designed to be used in a living space, where the viewing distance is a factor of feet or tens of feet. Pixel pitch can be larger, therefore resolution can be lower as the eye cannot discerne the pixel structure at typical distances.
CM and other hardware has a very small sales margin, typically much less than 10%. CE electronics have a larger margin, almost always over 10%.
CM usually do not have A/V inputs (1 exception is many Samsung displays), while CE have tuners, baseband video and HD inputs... most always audio too.
CM generally support VGA, XGXA, SXGA, UXGA, WXGA, WSXGA, WUXGA, and WQXGA resolutions. CE generally support WXGA, WSXGA, WUXGA, and other HD formats such as 480i/p, 720p, 1080i/p.
Most CM are not as concerned with accurate brighness and contrast values, off axis performance. Most CE highlite color temp accuracy, close to video ref brightness and contrast performance, but do not care about things such as panel latency. That being said, one could find examples of products in both markets that outperform products in the other market.
Because the avenues of distribution are completely different, there are differences in sales support, warranty service, installation, and on site support mechanisms.
In my market, A/V integration and embedded control systems programming, things such as have RS-232 com ports to query power status, input selection, aspect ratio, video settings, are important in the scope of making CE devices work within the context of a larger integrated system... something that is absent on virtually all CM products.

LAtest version of itunes doesn't detect dell 3008wfp 2560*1600 30inch monitors as hdcp compliant/capable.
How do I fix this so I can go back to watching HD movies via itunes?
    using:
    nvidia gtx570 x2 sli'd
    dual link dvi cables
    dell 3008wfp monitors

I have a similar situation.  Am running the Dell 3008wfp 2560x1600 30" monitor, and cannot download or view HD movies from iTunes; can do so with standard definition movies.  Took computer to a repair store I trust.  They downloaded an HD movie from iTunes (one I wanted) onto my machine, but connected to an Asus monitor.  Both of us were using a DVI cable.  So they think the problem lies with the monitor.  Although when connected to the Dell monitor, the Nvidia control panel says that the card and display are HDCP-compliant.  But read on...
    Using:
twin Nvidia GeForce GTX 295 cards, each with two DVI ports, but no HDMI port
    dual link DVI cable
    Dell 3008 wfp monitor
updated drivers, along with updated iTunes and QuickTime player.
On another forum, someone else was having a similar problem.  After talking with Dell and eVGA, plus testing, he came to the conclusion that this monitor does not run HDCP with DVI cable, despite Dell's assertion to the contrary.  It will run HDCP with HDMI and DisplayPort.  I only recently got into HD movies from iTunes, (or am trying to); the monitor has done well prior to this.  I hope a solution does not involve equipment replacement, but it may.

  • HDCP message itunes with hdcp monitor

    Hello World!
I've bought Turbo (HD) from iTunes store (from the mac Mini), and successfully saw it first time with Apple Tv: when I try to play it directly from Mini (Mid 2011) It shows the HDCP error message after 3 or 7 seconds since film beginning.
My monitor is an HP ZR2240w and is HDCP compliant as from spec http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/14143_na/14143_na.pdf , and it's connected with HDMI Monster Ultra-high speed cable to the Mini
    Also:
    iTunes version 11.1.3(8)
    OS X 10.9 (13A603)
    Apple TV is stopped.
    Any Ideas?!
    Thank you all
p.s.: sorry for my poor english.

Problem solved.  I finally got the Apple TV working by connecting it to a Panasonic TV.  I noticed that the automatic update was off so  I turned it on and also did an update, which apparently fixed the HDCP problem.  When I hooked the Apple TV back on the HP 27Xi it worked OK.

  • Mac and HDCP woes

I have been trying to get HD movies I bought from apple to play on my projector via VGA. When I try to play all I get is a gray-box on my mac and the projector. When the projector is unplugged everything of course works fine. When I called apple support they said I needed to play the videos through VLC, that since the decryption key is already on my mac from Itunes VLC should be able to use it to display the content in HD over a non-hdcp connection. Have not been able to get VLC to do anything more then show a track seek bar when I try to play the files in VLC. Any suggestions on how to get this to work? I understand that this is an HDCP issue at heart but I am trying to get around it as suggested by apple support. Thanks, Daniel.

This copy protection does make it impossible to watch content that has been legally purchased. No wonder people go out and steal content!
I spent money downloading a movie that I am also unable to watch. Apple really expects us to go out and spend lots of extra money buying special monitors? Really? They have got to be kidding!
There should be large and clear warnings on the iTunes store for all content that requires a special HDCP monitor to watch. No more scamming the public. Can you guess I'm angry?!

  • TrueHD and DTS HD MAster

    Hi,
I am about to buy a Mac. it is either going to be a new Mac Mini or a 2010 Imac 27 inch i3 (3.2ghz). My question is simple really.
Are either of these capable of playing an MKV with HD audio like DTS HD Master or Dolby True HD through my amp which is capable of decoding?
All the mac would need to do is pass the sound through (probably via HDMI as toslink isnt fast enough)
Is it possible on either device?

    >HDCP Monitor with at least a 080P resolution
Not necessarily true. As long as the Image Constraint Token isn't enabled on the disc, it should playback at full res over analogue VGA. Ideally you'd need 600x200 for the full horizontal resolution. as the 6:9 area on a 4:3 monitor at this resolution would be 080 lines high. A 280x024 4:3 VGA monitor has a 6:9 area of 280x720 which is 720p which should be sufficient. Some people with the Toshiba HD-A connect to 720p projectors.
    >HDCP HDMI ver .3 and/or DVI-D Cables
    >HDCP Video Card (with the HDCP chip onboard...not just on the GPU)
HDCP is only essential for digital playback over DVI or HDMI unless the Image Constraint Token (ICT) is turned on or the Digital Only Token ( DOT ) in which case you'll need a HDCP compatible monitor and graphics card.
    >HDCP 64-bit OS (aka Vista Ultimate Edition most likely)
The Toshiba Qosimo and Sny Vaio laptops with HD-DVD and Blu-Ray playback capability use WInDVD8 HD on a regular WIndows XP version. A special graphics driver to support HDCP is required from nVidia and ATi.
    >HDCP HD DVD and Blu-Ray Software Player (ie nVIDIA Pure Video HD with WMP?)
    >MPEG4/H.264 or VC- codecs (most likely contained in the above media player?)
You'll definitely need a player and the players will come with their own codecs. Apparently next gen DVD formats won't support DirectShow filter chains for playback for added security.
    >HD DVD-ROM and/or BD-ROM dri've capable of playing back the movies in progressi've mode.
Well the progressi've mode has nothing to do with the ROM/Writer dri've. That's just the format 'tis stored on the disc. The progressi've/deinterlacing will be done by the codec in conjunction with the graphics hardware or by the display.

  • HT1338 I just bought a brand new mac mini, and finally got it authorized for itunes.  I purchased some tv programs and now it is telling me I canʻt play them because my monitor doesnʻt support HDCP... I am using a 30inch mac monitor...

Any ideas how to get this working?  I donʻt have money to go buy a new monitor...

Unfortunately HDCP is a technical requirement for the playback of some movie formats, for example Blu-ray.  If your monitor does offer this, make sure your cabling and connection type also supports it.  If your monitor doesn't offer this, I'm afraid you may have to consider buying a new or additional monitor.  Any other suggestions I could make are not permitted on this forum, I'm afraid.
I have this problem too.  I have a 2005/2006 Apple Cinema Display that's still in perfect working order, but doesn't have support HDCP.  I had to find an alternative way of playing back my blu-rays.

  • Use of HDMI (HDCP enabled) Monitor with MacBook

    Hi
I’ve been searching the discussion boards to try and answer this but as I haven’t been able to get a definitive answer I will post my own thread (with apologies if I’ve missed a previous response that covers this)…
I am about to purchase one of the new HP w2408h monitors which has VGA and HDMI (with HDCP) inputs:
    http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en/ho/WF05a/20491-314293-314303-314303-314303- 80644319.html
My concern is that the HDCP will cause an issue when using this with my Macbook. The posts I’ve read so far talk about issues with TVs rather than monitors – does this make a difference?
I would expect to be able to utilise the full 1920 x 1200 resolution, will this be possible?
My plan is to use a DVI to HDMI cable via a mini DVI to DVI adaptor if this will do the job (as a fallback I could use VGA connections, but would much prefer to use the digital signal).
    Thanks in anticipation.

OK, so I bit the bullet and ordered the monitor (HP had assured me it would work OK).
Most importantly it does work, exactly as I wanted it to (MacBook recognised it immediately).
In summary, the MacBook is connected via a DVI adaptor to a DVI to HDMI cable. I'm then passing the cable through a passive HDMI switching box (also connected to a PC) which is connected (via HDMI to HDMI) to the monitor.
I'm using the MacBook in Extended Desktop mode with the external monitor running in its native 1920 by 1200 resolution - it looks great.
I am able to flick between the MacBook and a PC using the switching box. When in PC display mode, the MacBook reverts to single screen mode.
I am not using any HDCP encoding (as far as I know).
Hope this info is of use.

  • UltraSharp 2407FPW 24.0-inch Wide Flat Panel LCD Monitor Supports HDCP,

The Dell UltraSharp 2407FPW 24.0-inch Wide Flat Panel LCD Monitor Supports HDCP. I am going to order a Mac Pro and it has an Ati Radeon X1900 XT which is HDCP ready. But I really want an Apple Cinema 30 inch Display. Does anyone know how long it is going to take Apple to release the new displays with HDCP? And does anyone recommend the Dell Monitor> Is it better than the Apple Cinema Displays? Thank You.

looking at both up close I think the 3007WFP looks nicer than the apple 30 inch, it also supports HDCP.

  • HDCP error with new HDCP compliant monitor

I just bought a new Asus VE228H monitor.  I have a ATI Radeon HD 4200, HDCP compliant video card and I am running Windows 7 and iTunes 12.1.1.4.  Even though the new monitor is HDCP compliant, I still get an HDCP error in iTunes.  I replaced the cable with a new HDMI cable and I still get the error.  I have tried searching online for a solution, but haven't found a solution.  Thanks in advance for your help.

    SUCCESS ....... for now ......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i have now got my atv2 unit to power back on - and we can play the rented SD movie which is playing now to a happy family....
No HDCP error message appeared this time.
This what we did to fix our issues....
    1) Pressed the HDMI cable more firmly into the HDMI port into TV - this allowed the ATV2 to actually show/reappear onto the tv panel.
    2) Plugged both power leads for TV and ATV DIRECTLY into wall. (Previously, we had both AC leads plugged into a 4x multi power board and had this plugged into the wall.
We started the SD movie and no HDCP error appeared and movie is still playing as i type...
Now, to repeat this error/diagnostic, we then plugged the TV power lead back into the 4 x multi power board and plugged the board back into the wall. Immediately, the dreaded HDCP error re-appeared. We then replugged TV back into wall directly and no HDCP error message.
    Hypothesis #1 :
Now, this 4 x multi power board also had our DVD player and stereo connected to it. Perhaps our DVD (potential recording device) was being detected and hence the HDCP barrier came up so that we were not able to record this movie.... just a hunch but sounds plausible.....
    Hypothesis #2 :
Also, this 4 x multi power board was within immediate vacinity of the ATV2 unit. Possible interference.....
When the 'dust' settles and the family finishes watching the movies, (1 x HD , 1 x SD), i will plug the 4 x multi power board into another AC wall socket way out of the way of the ATV2 unit (around 4m) and try to repeat this error to validate my hypotheses - noted above.
I will report findings later in around 6 hours...
    thanks for your help people...

  • When I try to play netfix on my new mini/ old monitor I get a message to ensure my monitor is HDCP compatible... Is this because I am using an old monitor?  Do I need to buy a new one?

When I try to play Netflix on y new Mac Mini and old monitor, I get a message asking me to make sure my monitor is HDCP compliant.  Is this because I am using an old monitor?  Do I need a new one?

All kinds of bugs are being reported with Safari, from sluggish performance to it refusing to load up at all. Some users are seeing an HDCP compliant error message appear when watching Netflix, and possible solutions include switching to Silverlight rather than HTML5 or unplugging display peripherals. Alternatively, you could switch to another browser until either Apple or Netflix get around to fixing the bug.

  • TS3354 iTunes states I need an HDCP compliant monitor to play HD video.  My Nvidia control panel states I have a compliant monitor and card.

according to my nvidia control panel my monitor (shimian 27in (apple cinema display) IS HDCP ready, but itunes thinks otherwise.  Running a GTX780 in 2560x1440 resolution.  Any advice would be appreciated.

Ok so I got it going by turning down my monitor's resolution to 1080p. A bit annoying to flip back and forth but a simple solution.

  • Hp s2031 monitor will not receive premium channels from cable tv, due to hdcp. what to do?

I am moving to a building with only cable tv reception. I plan on ditching an old, huge (not flat screen) tv and will use my hp s2031 monitor with a tv tuner that will receive from a cable connection.  I will gladly pay for premium channels like hbo, starz, etc., but my hp s2031 monitor has HDCP, which apparently will block premium channels.  Am I incorrect?  Surely hp has a fix for people who are willing to pay for content. I cannot afford a new monitor, and I do not want to lug my current giant to the new location. The screen on my laptop is much smaller.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

You are incorrect. HDCP (high definition content protect) prevents HD content from being sent over analog signaling. Since your HP s2031 monitor has both VGA (analog) and DVI-D (digital) inputs, you will need to use the DVI-D input to watch HD content. Your cable box will most likely have a HDMI output. To use this with your monitor will require a HDMI-to-DVI cable.

  • Is the imac native display (monitor) hdcp compliant??

hi  i bought a cable card tuner for windows ( running windows on bootcamp) i connect it via usb but it say's that it will work with no problem with laptop since they have a native display  but on a desktop the monitor the connects to the desktop has to be hdcp compliant but i have an imac and since it has a native display will it work ?? is the native display of my imac hdcp compliant???

ok so i did some research on google and found out that it will work with the imac since the imac is an all in one pc  and has a native display like a laptop the hdcp problem is only with a desktop pc since the desktopreceives the video signal from the u.s.b and then  has to pass the video signal from the dektop to the monitor  with a hdmi/dvi cable and that's the problem when hdcp comes in but  with laptops and all in one pc there is no problem becuse they have a native display, they don't use  hdmi or dvi cable to pass the video signal so there is no hdcp .
i think i found the answer but i would really like if a mac experte can confirm this.

  • Movies can't be played on apple monitor  - error about HDCP authorization

I have a MacPro 2.66GHz dual Intel with a 24" apple display screen.
All of a sudden I can't play any iTunes purchased movies on my display. I get the message "movie cannot be played because a display that is not authorized to play protected movies is connected...not HDCP authorized".
It must have happened after a software update. This are MY LEGALLY PURCHASED MOVIES from iTunes. I have an apple TV and can watch them fine from there or an iPod, just not sitting at my computer. I called apple support and they had no ideas. Ran system check on hard drive, repaired permissions, etc and still no change. Everything else on computer works great. Need help. Why does iTunes think an non authorized display is connected when I'm running a fairly new 24" display (2 years old)?

You pretty much have to downgrade Quicktime to 7.5.5. I'm on the phone with Apple Tech Support and will give an update when I get it.
This is the way I downgraded Quicktime:
To make it easier...this is how to downgrade to Quicktime 7.5.5.
    Download pacifist here - http://www.charlessoft.com/Pacifist.dmg
Download Quicktime 7.5.5 here (or whatever version you want). - Just do a search for the version you want - http://support.apple.com/downloads/
Instruction for using pacifist here - http://www.digitalrebellion.com/blog/posts/usingpacifist_to_downgradequicktime.html
I know this works because I did it and was able to watch the new HD tv shows. Then, I downloaded Quicktime 7.6 and installed it using the installer. I COULD NOT watch the new HD tv shows. Then, I reverted Quicktime back to 7.5.5 and am now able to watch them again.
I agree, Apple needs to fix this. Until they do, I'll stay with 7.5.5.
