HDD and SSD trouble

Hi!
A couple of days ago I left my Macbook Pro 13 inch Mid 2012 at my desk for a couple of minutes. When I returned it showed a grey screen with a folder icon and a question mark within this icon. I remember not putting it down smoothly but more or less dropping it on my desk. Restarts did not work and after searching the web for the meaning of the error icon, I figured that my hard drive must have failed.
I also have an external hard disk which I use for storage of some video files/projects. I took this hard disk out of the casing and also removed the internal hard disk from my Macbook. I placed the external hard disk in my Macbook, and I placed my former internal hard disk in the casing of my external hard disk drive. I then restarted my Macbook holding down the Alt-key. I was again able to boot OS X through the USB connected hard disk. In finder, my former external hard disk, now connected internally, also showed up. All files were accessible and it showed no sign of faulty internal connection.
My guess is, after reading through several threads on multiple fora, that the SATA cable in my Macbook might be faulty. It doesn't make sense that it does work for my external storage disk, but doesn't for the original start up disk. On the other hand,  I've read that it can be more sensitive for different hard disks.
Now, due to all these problems, I thought it was a great idea to finally buy an SSD, as I was planning on upgrading to SSD anyways. I bought a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD Drive. As I already expected, the SSD wasn't recognised by the internal SATA connector. Then I booted using my original hard drive connected using my external hard drive SATA to USB connector, and plugged in my SSD using the Samsung SATA to USB connector. I did a fresh installation of Yosemite on the SSD. I tried booting Yosemite from the SSD using the internal SATA but no luck. So what it comes down to: I can only boot the two drives (my original boot disk and my fresh Yosemite SSD) using the external hard disk SATA to USB connector.

I then tried to update the firmware of the SSD: made a bootable DVD with the Samsung firmware update and tried to boot from it. Now here a strange thing happens. The boot DVD will only boot when the internal SATA connector is connected to a hard disk, so at the moment it will only boot when the internal drive is my former external hard drive (this is the only one that works internally). When the firmware update runs, it says that no Samsung SSD is found, while it is plugged in via USB.
I've read things about Trim Enabler and for some reason I used this utility and its currently set on 'on'. I don't know if this is important but I guess the more information the better.
Now, my questions related to this story are:
1. I'm currently running Yosemite from an USB plugged storage device. This is obviously not very comfortable. What might be the issue for not being able to boot from the SSD when internally connected to the SATA port?
2. The SSD firmware won't detect the USB connected SSD. How can this be possible? I will also contact Samsung for this issue.
I really hope someone can help me out, because currently I'm not exactly sure what the problem is

Verified how exactly? Yes that CPU is compatible, but only when an Ivy UEFI/BIOS update has been performed.

    Well, I'm not sure how anything can fit into a 5 mm depth, so I can see why they've removed the CD drive -  there probably wouldn't be enough room for the laser, LOL. Can't imagine speakers, hard drive (of any flavor), logic board and so on and so forth. Fortunately, my iMac has Applecare through early 2015 so I'm set for a while; I may check out a Mini at that point - saw that it is configurable with a fusion drive, which would make it interesting for me.

    HP can only recommended tested configurations, as they know the expected result.  It is a personal choice to deviate from their recommendations in  the maintenance and service guide.  That is not to say they will not work, only that they have not been tested and therefore  results are unknown and therefore unsupported.

    Hi. I currently have a MacBook (Black one) that's overheating a lot for the past few months. I'm thinking about purchasing a MacBook Pro for school because it seems to be more stable. I have a question though. What is the difference between HDDs and SSDs? Which one is better? All I know is that with my MacBook and my iBook is that I had hard drive failures (iBook hard drive clicking, MacBook hard drive sounding loud and making my computer overheat). Are hard drive failures normal with Macs?

    Depends what you mean by "better." Faster? Yes. The 500 has 3x more storage capacity.

  • Installing an HDD and SSD in Macbook Pro

    Recently I bought an SSD and a caddy drive to replace the DVD drive with. Currently my OS is in the HDD that came with the 13 inch Macbook Pro but I would like it to be installed on the SSD. Is there a step by step process to install both drives and make the SSD my main startup drive?

    If you have any warranty left-doing what you plan voids it.
    Easy way is get carbon copy cloner and a usb to SATA adapter.
    Plug the ssd into the mac, clone it .
    Open the mac up, swap out the drives.

    Good afternoon Apple Community,
    Once again i require your kind assistance. I have recently installed a Samsung SSD drive (Model 850Pro, 256GB) on my primary bay and moved the HDD to the Optical bay. I then cloned the HDD contents to the SSD and chose the later to be used as the bootable disk, thus taking advantage of the quicker access.
    It is all working fine, but i wanted to be able to see the contents of the HDD in a way that i could choose what goes to this disk. For instance, when i open Finder i do not see any disk installed, no SSD nor HDD. How can i now delete the HDD contents and for that matter, also the SSD contents as well. I tried the disk utility but it only shows me the data on each drive, i cannot actually delete or move it.
    I am sure there is an "explorer" like view where i can move and delete the files on both disks, but i do not know where to find it.

    Hello again OGELTHORPE , i have checked the Finder preferences and indeed it was not set to show both disks. Now they are showing, but this brings me to another problem, i tried to delete the Download folder on the SSD which i now use has the boot up disk because i also have it on the HDD, but a system message came up saying that it cannot be deleted since it is required by OSX.
    I was hoping i could have the SSD for the System and Applications only, keeping the Downloads and other files on the HDD.
    Do you have any idea how i can do this? Does it have anything to do with permissions?

  • APS on TP with both HDD and SSD

    Hi,
    I have a Thinkpad with both a hard disk drive and a solid state drive.
    How does Active Protection System work? Does it simply cut power to all drives in the system? Or does it explicitly tell disk drives to park the heads?
    I want APS to work on the HDD, but I don't want it to slow me down on the SSD. Can anyone confirm that this will be the case.

    hey lucasreddinger,
    the APS works only with HDD unit. how it works is like this..
    as you know inside a HDD is circular platter that spins. when the unit is drop, the platter will shake and when it shakes, the APS will detect the movement and immediately halt the platter from spinning thus reducing damage to it.
    and because the SSD works like a flash drive and does not have any movable parts, APS won't work for it.

  • Setting up Dual Boot on a laptop with an HDD and an SSD?

    I've had a Lenovo Y500 laptop for about a year now, and I'd really like to run Arch on it. I've been using Arch on a virtual machine for a while now, and I have tried other distros like Gentoo and Slackware, but Arch is by far my favorite. I find myself spending most of my time on Arch with only 1GB RAM and 32GB hard disk space allocated, when I could be on my 8GB RAM Windows machine.
    The laptop has a 1TB HDD which is split into two partitions, a 883GB C: drive(entitled Windows OS) and a 25GB D: drive (entitled Lenovo), and a 16GB SSD which I imagine is for cache. I think I would like to allocate 256GB for Arch, since I really don't need much space to run Arch.
    Obviously I have to set up another partition, but I really don't know how to do that, especially without screwing up my HDD and SSD configuration.
    Any tips would be greatly appreciated,

    Gparted worked very well for me several years ago when I re-sized the (gack!) Vista partition that came on this laptop to make room for a real OS.  I had no problems -- be advised that this is a BIOS machine.  Be sure you back up anything important to you before you start.

    Hi, my computer is a mid-2012 Mac Pro 12 Core
    It's a great computer but I'm considering upgrading my main boot drive (WD Caviar Black 1TB HDD) to a 1tB Samsung EVO 840 SSD drive (I'm using a sonnet tempo PCI card to mount an SSD that holds audio at the moment and will add another SSD for the boot drive I'm referring to) so I just had a question - if I clone the HDD to the new SSD, what happens with things like licenses for my audio plugins, such as Native Instruments Komplete, programs by IKMultemedia. programs that use an ILOK such as Steven Slate Plugins and also, WAVES plugins?  Will this info all carry across to the new SSD drive or do you think I'll need to reauthorise some things?  I have all the serials etc so this shouldn't be an issue, but just wondered.
    Any help would be appreciated as it feels like quite a big step in that it's my main system drive!

    CCC is excellent. If it doesn't work then sure, just always have a safety net of your system that is untouched.
    Also, after a clean install, CLONE it!
    And then use Setup Assistant. Migration Assistant.
    Clone of the system can go on sparse disk images too so you don't have to partition (should have at least one though) and you can have clone from different stages and versions: 10.9.4, without Setup Assistant, migrated, full loaded with all your apps. Multiple versions.
    CCC is designed to make a working bootable copy of a system so you can move the system to another boot device like hdd and SSDs without the worry.
    But I think we were talking about a system that did not see a clean install of Mountain Lion or Mavericks so it is over due for one!

  • Ideapad U410 - What to Move to HDD and How?

    Hey there everyone! So I recently ordered this awesome U410 IdeaPad, and it's just wonderful! It came with a 32GB SDD and a 700GB HDD. Now, the problem is, all of the main files are on the SDD, but it's almost completely out of space, and the only thing I've downloaded so far is FireFox!
    Now, I've already set up the Hard Drive and gone through the wizard, gave it the name D: and all that good stuff. My question is, which files should I move over to the D drive, and more importantly, how do I do that? Is there a way to move EVERYTHING over, or is that a bad idea? I'd like to move everything over (such as the Program Files, Program files x86, PerfLogs, Drivers, and so on) unless it isn't a wise thing to do. If someone could give me some guidance in this, that'd be awesome!

    Welcome to the Forums.
    In addition to what LenBlazer have said, did you receive your unit with Freedos and installed the OS in the SSD?
    AFAIK, there are two configuration of this unit.
    1st Setup: HDD and SSD is on RAID (OS is installed on the HDD and the SSD is used as a cache drive using Intel Smart Response Technology).
    2nd Setup: HDD and SSD is partitioned separately and SATA nide is set as AHCI (OS is installed on the HDD and the SSD is used as a cache drive using Expresscache).
    Ideally, the OS should be installed on the HDD if the SSD is less than 64GB as the OS will eat approx. 20-25GBGB with Win7 SP1.

    I recently purchased an NB305 for use at work (need the portability and battery life)
    I have a question regarding it. I'd love to install a 128GB Kingston SSDNow V-Series drive to both improve performance and battery life.
    My questions are, will this SSD fit/work?
    Will it give me a decent increase in performance? (the SSDs in my desktop are marvellous)
    Will it improve battery life?
    The reason I ask what should otherwise be some easy to answer questions, is that the specific data sheets for the HDD and SSD are as follows:
    The Hitachi HTS545025B9A300 (5K500.B) drive icurrently in my laptop:
    Power Specs Active: 1.4W read/write power
    0.5W low power idle
    875 Mbps (109.38MBps)
    and the Kingston SSD Now V-Series SNV125-S2/128GB 2.5" :
    Power Specs Active: 5.2W (TYP)
    Sleep: 0.7W (TYP)
    Sequential Speed**
    ~1600Mbps (200MBps). read; 160MB/sec. write
    Now looking at that, the SSD is indeed a lot faster, but seems to come at a cost - it uses over 3 times the power!
    Can that be correct? (and even idle is higher!)
    The stated figures are from the respective manufacturers websites/pdfs so one would think they'd be fairly accurate.
    Sure, the SSD's nearly twice as fast - but 'apparently' uses over three times the power!
    I welcome any thoughts.

    Why not? The SSD drives are not different from HDDs I think you will need an SATA SSD since the NB300 series supports an SATA HDD controller

    Well, the data access should be faster and therefore you should notice a better performance but to be honest the NB300 is a notebook where such small performance increases would not be really important

    Hmm maybe but if yes then an improvement would not be really noticeable since the HDD is not the main part which wastes the battery power
