  • JVC Cameras And FCE4E

    Hello yet again,
    Many thanks for everyones patience...
I've been told that FCE4 will not import directly from a JVC Camcorder, but rather one must first import from the camera to iMovie, then into FCE4. Is that correct?
    Many thanks again,
    Lyman

I'm having a similar problem. We shot video on a JVC-MG130U hard disk camera, then transfered the video to an external hard drive via USB. I can open the video in both iMovie and FCE4, but the image is very out of focus, while it is clearly in focus when viewed from the camera.
Anyone have an idea how to fix this? Thanks so much in advance!

  • HDD cameras and editing

I know there is a lot of information here on HDD cameras like the Sony DCR SR82. I am a teacher and work with students in both iMovie 8 and Final Cut 5 and want to know if these cameras will plug in and import. I don't want to have to deal with converting file formats etc. I am new to these cameras and want to know if I should wait. I work with Power PC and Intel machines in OSX 10.4 and 10.5. Suggestions? Stick with Mini DV?

    According to this link:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306171
your camera is supported on iMovie 7.x.x from iLife '08.
    Good Luck.

  • Help!  JVC HDD Camera and Final Cut Express

    Hello fellow Macsters!
I am using a JVC HDD camera but I realized it doesn't have FIREWIRE only USB 2.0. I am trying to unload my video into my Final Cut Express program but it won't work. Final Cut Express doesn't recognize it and the computer recognizes it as a 'drive'. What can I do to get my video into Final Cut Express and have Final Cut Express recognize this without a traditional firewire cable? Please help it will be greatly appreciated. You can also email me at [email protected]
    Take Care
    Andrew

You could pipe the signal from the JVC to a D/A converter box and then into the Mac, this will work.
    OR
The HDD gives Mpeg2 files that FCE can't directly use. Third party software can de-mux these files before yhey go to FCE. Search this forum for de-mux.

  • No Connection between Camera and FCE4

We have a JVC Everio GZ-HD3U, iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.3), FCE4. The camera has a firewire connection. The computer does not recognize the camera. We can download the movies using a USB and iMovie HD.

  • Sony's New HDD Cameras and FCE (or iMovie)

Help! I just bought a new Sony camera that does not use tapes. It is the DCR-SR40. They files are saved as Quicktime, but I cannot use them in FCE. Sony support says that they are not compatible with Mac. I can buy an editing program from Pixela, for $100, but then I can't use FCE. Any help in getting the files to work? Any third party software to convert the files? Sony support said I could use an analog capture card, but again, another expense, and I lose the digital. Grr!

Hey, thanks a bunch! I got Streamclip to work finally. I did have to d/l the quicktime add. I tried it without, to no avail. This twenty dollar fix is a lot better than the hundred dollar one.
I tried to email you, but the forum wouldn't give me your address. Is there any difference to the export choices? Export to DV is the best choice? It worked with one dvd I just made. Since you have this camera, am I supposed to format the HDD drive before I use it? I did not, as I was in a hurry to film. I just grabbed it out of the box and shot. I seem to remember that I had to do that as well when I bought a still Sony camera a few years ago. Same problem, had to format to get the disk to read.
Again, thanks a great deal for your help. I appreciate all here, both of you guys who helped me answer this problem.
    Best,
    LT

  • Older Cameras and Final Cut Pro 7

    Hello all!
I dug out my old SONY DCR-TRV520 this weekend so my son could start playing around with a camera of his own. The camera is a Digital8 camera and has the 4 pin iLink(FW400) interface.
I have used it many, many times in my college days with older versions of Final Cut, up to 4. However when I plugged it in today and turned on Final Cut..it wouldn't launch. As soon as I unplugged the camera, Final Cut sprang to life. However, when I turned on Log & Capture it was not detected.
The only other FW drive I have is a 2TB FW800 drive for my video scratch & render and even with that unplugged I couldn't get the camera to be recognized.
Is there something that has changed that will not allow these older cameras to work anymore or is it just specific to this model? It was on the list of compatible cameras for Final Cut 4 but 3 versions is a lot of code changes.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks for the replies.
The camera is plugged in direct and it is in VTR Mode. I am going to try my archived version of iMovie 2.0.1 and see if that works on my 'ol 10.3 rig. If that doesn't work then I am going to see what I can do on the Windows side of things.
Oh, I an I tried the capture preset of Non-Controlable device and that still didn't work. The camera only has a 1/8" A/V out port and FW 400 4-pin interface so no USB support. The camera came out when USB 2.0 was still a gleam in a certification board's eye.
SONY's PMB software doesn't support tape based media and VEGAS 9 will not recognize the camera on a FW400 port. The only other option is to use my HDPVR and the S-Video out and encode it manually which will be just fine.
I do actually have a SONY AVCHD HDD cam and I love it. My kid is only 6 so it is still on the list of daddy's toys that he is not allowed to play with. I plan to teach him on film and tape before he graduates to HD what not but he is a bit away from that.
Just like I won't let him play Super Mario Galaxy until he beats the original Super Mario Bros.
But I will probably keep dinking with it until I get it to work and if I find a solution I post it.

  • Everio HDD Camera

Okay, so I'm having a major strugglefest getting my videos off of the GZ-HD300BU JVC Everio HDD camera, and every other support thing I have found has been for a different model, and therefore useless.
Does anyone know how to ACTUALLY import the files onto iTunes?
When I choose the "Export to Library" option, which should put all the movie files onto iTunes, but does nothing except for show the external drive on my computer, where I can access the files, but they're in .MTS format, which is untouchable unless you have $35 for the iSkysoft converter, which I don't want to pay for after getting the newest version of Final Cut Express, which should be able to handle AVCHD...
    *grumble grumble*
Also there's all this nonsense about having the newest QuickTime. What's that about?

You really should take this question to the iTunes forum. If you want to ingest it using FCE then you're in the right place.

  • Capturing HD video directly into my computer using HDD Cam & FCE 3.5

I have a JVC Everio GZ-HD7. Unfortunately, I didn't realize how "crappy" these HDD cams can be, in time to be able to return it. It records in 4GB sections, which is bad for me because I record at a studio and I can't have songs being cut off all the time and when trying to put together on the timeline on FCE, you notice the millisecond switch from one clip to another, including the audio skip. Now, I had a DV Cam (tape) which came with a program that I connected the cam to the comp using USB and could capture video straight into my computer's HDD. Is there anyway of doing the same thing with my JVC, which has Firewire and USB, using IMovie or FCE, or perhaps even another program (could be cheap too)?? I just need to be able to record entire clips and then edit them in FCE. The GZ-HD7 records in Full HD, 1440CBR and SD, but apparently 1440CBR is the "same thing" as HDV, which should work as if I had a HD Tape Cam. PLEEEASE and help! Ive tried looking everywhere but either I dont type in the correct keywords or there just isnt anything like that. I appreciate it!

i didnt read this topic too much but maybe youre not recording to the hard disk just the external medi drive... anyway... if your having trouble importing your clips... watch this vid...maybe this will help...

  • Using OneStep DVD with a HDD Camera

I am a relatively new mac user (4 months) but i've navigated my way around pretty well and have used all the ilife software as well as final cut express and some other things with much delight. But I have a wife and have a 1 year old baby. The wife is intelligent but would rather not spend time editing video etc.. but would rather take our files directly off the camera and burn them to dvd.. So i noticed the onestep dvd process which would be perfect if we had a firewire type camera.. But we don't. We also don't have firewire on our new macbook. Hence the reason we bought a HDD camera that does AVCHD. Just wondering if anyone knows if iDVD could use a HDD camera with a quick process such as OneStep DVD.
    thanks
    Steve

Too late to edit my reply so I'll add this here .....
The only way I can think of to accomplish your wife's objective is with a FW minidv camcorder (example pictured below) and a Dvd Recorder with a FW input like this one (Daewoo DVR07):
The advantage in this is that all is done in real time (as opposed to waiting for iDvd to capture and encode a one step dvd) and includes a basic menu and interval chapters if you wish (not to mention the ability to record in sessions as opposed to write at once only thru iDvd).
Btw ... iDvd's One Step can actually take longer than using the traditional approach of iMovie => iDvd (just so you are aware).
Hope this helps but if not just come on back.

Sounds just like what was happening with my Alum MB. I took it in and they replaced my battery. It seems to be ok now. I don't know what it is, but my battery was fine before 10.5.6 and the same timeframe of the firmware updates when they came out.
My battery health was jumping around but was fine before all of this happened. Unfortunately at 381 cycles I don't think you have much chance of getting the battery for free. Perhaps you can complain about the battery saying it was fine until 10.5.6 or whatever. Not sure when your computer was made, but perhaps you are eligible for this program: http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/

  • HDD camera - yes or no?

Hi, the title says it all. I know this is the Final Cut PRO forum and most people here are pros so I expect the answer from you guys to be NO. But can somebody explain me why not? What are the disadvantages of HDD cams compared to tape cams. I know they take AVCHD and this is compressed but do you really loose so much quality with it? Or are there other issues?
Please try to answer in terms a relative newbie to video can understand. I'm reading up on these forums, on other websites, etc. but some things still highly confuse me.
If you want to know my goal : I'm a diver and recently took lot's of video footage with my small point and shoot Canon Ixus 850 (yes it can take video, quality is not great however). I'm thinking of doing much more of this in the future (and making diving movies to be sold to people who take the dive courses) so I'm looking to buy a decent camera. As a computer geek I'm much more attracted by the HDD based models. I also don't like the hassle with tapes... At the other hand, I want the quality to be as high as possible, but this doesn't mean it really needs to be the highest professional quality (like for National Geographic or so...). I have an iMac 2.8 and would be interested in spending time to learn FCS2.
As far as I can find, FCP 6.0.1 (and 6.0.2) supports the transfer of AVCHD and conversion into AIC. What's the advantage of working in AIC and doing all the editing there?
Thanks and sorry for the basic questions but as I said, lot's of things still confuse me, even after reading up a bit on this stuff!
    Peter.

My biggest beef with hard drive recording isn't so much the quality but rather its physical robustness or rather lack of it. I have seen many professionals initially by the advantages of HDD recording only to switch back to tape due to corrupt data caused by a bump or nudge while recording. recording diving videos seems like it would be especially prone to these problems. I would stick with a traditional tape format like DV or if you have the funds record on to solid state media like the P2 cards.

  • Recording live onto FCP using HDD Cam?

I have a JVC GZ-HD7 HD HDD Cam. Is there any kind of setting in FCP that will recognize my HDD Cam via Firewire or USB so that I can record live footage onto my computers HDD? I want to pass through my Camcorders HDD and record directly to my Macbooks HDD using Final Cut Pro? Any help Thanks!!
    GC

IF your camera has a Firewire out, it may work. In FCP, set "Device Control" to "Non-Controllable Device" and use "Capture Now." Be sure to adjust the Capture Now limit to whatever you'll need.

  • Using a Hitachi BD HDD camera with iLife HD 6

My friend just bought a Hitachi Wooo BD (Blu-ray) HDD camera. This does not use tape but a small recordable disk.
It does NOT have an IEEE port! She and her husband bought a mac and want to edit video in iMovie but they can't even connect this camera. These Cameras are becoming more common in Japan. Is there any way for her to connect her new video camera to her iMac and edit the video in iMovie? I know iMovie doesn't support USB, but it would be a huge bummer if they can't use this latest tech with the only computer that supports HD editing.

I found another post relating to the use of HDD (tape-less) cameras.
    Answer:
    Buy iLife 08
If the camera works, use it.
If the camera doesn't work, return it and get a new one.

  • Canon Vixia HF S10 and FCE4 - Log & Transfer

Please help. Have been trying for hours and can not find the answer on line, at least one that works. I have a Canon Vixia HF S10 and every time I attempt to "add clip to queue" I receive a red octagon that states "Error: No Data". I am using FCE4, or trying to at least. Does anyone out there know how to resolve this issue?

    Hi -
Verify that you are using FCE 4.0.1.
Open the Log and Transfer window.
Click on the little gear shaped icon towards the upper middle of the L&T window
    !http://www.spotsbeforeyoureyes.com/L%26TPrefs.jpg!
Select Preferences from the drop down menu.
When the preference window opens, set the AVCHD Plug-In audio format to Plain Stereo.
Now try connecting the camera and see if you can import your files via Log and Transfer.
If there are clips on the camera memory that are recorded with different settings, this can cause problems. The clips need to be all HD clips.
    Hope this helps.
