HDD connected to my Airport

If I were to buy the new Airport Extreme would I be able to connect my backup HDD to it via USB and have Time Machine backup to that HDD? I have been hearing mixed reports on this. Can anyone confirm for me if it works or not?

there is hope:

I've encountered this error myself upon occasion.  If I remember correctly, it was a permissions/ownership issue with the some of the files I was copying.

  • I am trying to get an answer to whether or not I can successfully use Time Machine with an external HDD connected to an airport extreme?  Some forums say yes, some say no.

I am trying to get an answer to whether or not I can successfuly use Time Machine with an external HDD connected to an airport extreme.  Some forums say yes, some say no.  I'm also curious about formatting the hard drive to work both on my wife's MacBook Pro and my PC.  Any help would definitely be appreciated.

You may be going on a recollection, that I share, that at one time Apple stated this would be possible:
In fact, Apple’s Time Machine Web page touted this very capability as recently as last Tuesday, as you can see from Google’s October 16 cache of the page
Effortless meets wireless. With a hard disk connected to your AirPort Extreme Base Station, all the Macs in your house can use Time Machine to back up wirelessly. Simply select your AirPort Disk as the backup disk for each computer and the whole family can enjoy the benefits of Time Machine.
But if you look at the current Time Machine page on Apple’s Web site, that text is nowhere to be found.
That was a long time ago, it has never been officially implemented, and at present they specifically say it cannot be done.
In summary, it may work, but probably won't, and even if it does it may not be reliable.

  • Using a HDD connected to airport base station

I have a usb HDD connected to my Airport and would like to use it as the time machine disk for my macbook. However, time machine set-up cannot detect the drive. So is it possible to do this?

AirPort Extreme 802.11 n or Time Capsule will support a USB HDD (or printer). The AirPort Express USB port only supports some USB printers. Which AirPort do you have?

  • Smart folder not searching external HDD connected to Airport Extreme

I have bunch of movie files (mp4 format) on external HDD connected to the new Airport Extreme station. When I create a smart folder on either one of the machines on my local network, the smart folder would not search at all through the HDD connected to the Airport Extreme.
I have another HDD connected directly to my PowerMacG5Quad and smart folders successfuly searches through that drive.
However, when I ask for any type of search (i.e. any kind of files) located on a networked external HDD, smart folders acts is if the networked drive is not even there.
Obviously, my purpose here is to have the difference machines access (RSS style) all the movies files located on the networked HDD.
Is it some permission in Airport Extreme?

  • Access permissions on HDD connected to Airport

I have a new Airport Extreme wirelessly connected to my network. I have two HDD connected to the Airport, one for Time Machine, the other for my iTunes library. No problem with the HDD used for Time Machine, but on the other HDD the access permissions keep resetting to 'Everyone' being given no access. When I go in and change the permissions, close the information box and open it up again it has reverted back to no access. If I reboot the laptop it will normally fix this, be fine for a bit and then happen again.
Any ideas why the access permissions keep changing and what I can do to stop it happening?

Unfortunately, Apple did not leave much room for setting user permissions for AirPort Disks. As you know, you can choose from one of three methods, but regardless of which method you choose, you cannot set permissions individually for folders/files on a drive, nor set them differently on either a different partition on the same drive or across multiple drives attached to a USB hub.
What you are experiencing is possibly a shortcoming with the AirPort's file sharing feature. Even with the "With Accounts" option, there is inconsistency between partition vs. accounts. With multiple partitions, formatted with HFS+, you do not have any control on where the user permissions account folder ends up. Also, the location of this folder seems to change arbitrarily so that even something as simply restarting the base station will change which partition has this folder and subsequent permissions ... with the other drive getting the "Everyone" permissions ... like you are experiencing.

  • HT1449 will it work if i have the external hard drive connected to an airport extreme?

I recently purchased a Macbook Air 11.6" 128GB and I realized my itunes library is getting a bit bigger than expected. So I searched for ways to keep my MBA`s SSD with more space and I found this article.
I do have an 1TB external HDD connected to my airport extreme, and ive been transferring files mannually. But this solution seems quite interesting! having my itunes library all stored up on it seem cool!
    so...will it work?

You can do it.. it is often unreliable.

Apple do not support or recommend it.. but you can turn it on.. there must be a million posts with the method.

    Q2 for the setup..
    Good Luck!!

  • Is it possible to plug in an external HDD to the USB connection on my Airport Express for backups?

Is it possible to plug in an external HDD to the USB connection on my Airport Express for backups? As a kind of cheapo Time Capsule?

Unfortunately no, because the USB port on the AirPort Express will only work with a printer and a Keyapan remote control. Hard drives are not supported.
You would need an AirPort Extreme for that type of functionality.

  • Access USB external HDD connected to Airport Extreme

    Hi.
Today I configured "Back to my Mac" and I'm having a little issue with the external HDD that is connected to the Airport.
Let me explain the configuration: Airport Extreme (latest version) configured with Back to My Mac option, with an external HDD connected using USB port (The HDD is externanly powered). iMac computer with OSX Mavericks wireless connected, configured with iCloud Account and Back to My Mac with screen sharing).
I can access the shared screen and control the iMac from my Macbook Air outside my home network.
The issue is when I try to access the "network HDD" because I can connect using the right user but Finder windows never shows the HDD content. I have to disconect and reconnect to the external HDD to be able to see the files (If I have 3 windows and want to access the HDD on each of the 3 windows, I have to disconnect and reconnect 3 times).
    Question:
There is any way to access the external HDD and be able to see its content using the configuration mentioned? The disconnect and reconnect procedure for each window is normal? There is a better configuration I can apply?. Just as information, from my MacBook Im able to see perfect the HDD content from outside my home network.
I know the question is a little bit confusing, but if you need any additional info please let me know.
    Thank you.

  • Airport Extreme with 2TB WD HDD connected via USB

Hello all, have just joined this discussion group. I had been a windows user for several years now until recently when I replaced my laptop for Macbook Pro 13".
MAC OS is good and stable. As my MAC HDD is only about 250 GB, it is not sufficient for my media files both Photos, Music & Video. Hence, I purchased a 2TB WD Essential USB Hard drive for storing the media files and using it as the backup for Time Machine. I want to use my media files both in my Mac as well as my IBM Thinkpad (Office), I decided to buy N class Router and connect the HDD which would enable me to share. However, I failed on my ideas as the Netgear Router N600 WINDR3700 does not support HFS+ File System! I was not willing for Fat32, but tried that too, the file transfer speeds are very slow.
Now I am thinking as to whether return this WINDR3700 Router and buy Airport Extreme in-lieu of that. My questions are as follows:
    1) Does Airport Extreme support 2TB HDD via USB ? I assume it will support HFS+ FS.
    2) Would I be able to configure Time Machine for Backups to this HDD attached to the Airport Express ?
    3) Could I configure iTunes & iPhotos to store Media & Image Files Library in this HDD instead of my local Mac HDD ?
    4) How is the Speed of File Transfer to this HDD ?
    5) How is the Speed of Internet in N class in Airport Extreme ? I currently use a 50 Mb DSL ?
I am even prepared to reformat my entire MAC and reinstall everything again based on your suggestion if there is a need.
My decision to buy Airport Extreme is based on all of you users valuable inputs.
Thanks in anticipation of your support.
    Cheers, Sriram

Wow, and I thought my problem connecting to the Extreme router to my Kodak wireless printer was the problem.  You have multiple printers from various manufacturers that won't connect wirelessly.  I hope you get a reply that will help us both.  My printer finds theappropriate network but the Security Kkey (password), that works with my other connected PC's, does not connect the printer.  Ron

  • I own an Airport Extreme Base Station with a HDD connected. Can I copy my iTunes Library to this HDD and play it on my iPad?

Now I use Home sharing. This works well, but I have to keep my computer running with iTunes open. I like to shut down my computer.

    Hans Brinker wrote:

currently i know of only one way to achieve that. using FileBrowser on iPad, you can access media files stored on
    a NAS
an external HD connected to an airport extreme
    a time capsule

  • Can you search an external hdd connected via airport extreme

I have my western digital 500gb harddrive connected to my airport extreme so I can use my HD wirelessly. I tried searching for files in my wireless harddrive through finder, but it doesn't seem to search it, only on my macbook itself. Is it possible to search the harddrive wirelessly?

    Smokerz,
    could you explain??
I spent over an hour with Apple Tech support and they said that Finder/Spotlight WILL NOT search a networked drive. However, I did find a bit of a work around:
    1. In Finder Preferences: General - Select check box - 'Always open folders in new window'
    2. Open up a Finder window
    3. Select Airport Extreme. (Left column, Shared, name of Airport base station)
    4. Select networked drive
    5. Double Click a folder in your network drive that you want to search (this opens new window)
    6. In the new window, type what you need in the search window (upper right hand corner).
Remember: The Finder window will default to the 'This Mac' in the search column (light grey line below the Toolbar)
    7. In the Search column, This Mac and Contents are selected in Dark Grey. You should see
Search: *This Mac* "folder name" Shared | Contents File Name
    8. Now select "folder name". This will search the contents of the selected folder and bypass your Mac.
If there is an easier way, could you please explain. TIA
    Narvon
PS - If you try to select your networked drive in a new window as in step 5, this still won't work. You can only select specific folders within the drive. Lastly, you can move all your folders and files to 1 folder, however, this increases the search time (My network drive is 320GB in size and a search for 1 known file took just over 3 minutes).

  • Weird problem connecting HD to Airport Extreme

I have an Airport Extreme with a powered USB Hub connected to it, which connects to two HDD's and a printer.
The problem: One HDD shows up through direct USB connection on both Airport and directly into my Macbook, but disappears (never shows up) when I connect it to the Hub.
The other HD shows up fine, as does the printer.
How can it be that Airport Extreme sees it when plugged in directly, but doesn't when it's through a hub?
Also, I formatted this drive HFSX, but Time Machine says it can't (de)activate the drive when trying for a backup.

the HD not showing is most likely a vendor issue not that of Apple or Airport. I use LaCie Quadras even with a hub and don't have that issue.
Other examples are that some third party vendors externals don't sleep when connected to tC or Extreme. I think that a huge issue and LaCies do sleep.

  • I have a HDD attached to my AirPort Express through a 7-port USB

I have a HDD attached to my AirPort Express through a 7-port USB hub. How come it doesn't show in my iMac?

To add to what Tesserax said -

The USB port on the Express only supports a USB printer. You will need to connect the hub to your iMac.

  • Can't write to External HDD connected to AEBS

+This is a repost from the SL Discussion...hopefully someone here can help...+
I am logged in under my account, which is the Administrator Account. I am unable to write to Seagate 1 TB external HDD connected to AEBS base station.
Under "Get Info"->Sharing and Permissions it reads "You have custom Access" and then shows just one account, "everyone" and this is a "Read Only" account. The format of the External Drive is shown as "Appleshare" (actual drive is formatted as NTFS so my Dell PC can read/write, which is functioning perfectly).
I tried to change the "everyone" account to Read and Write but Mac 10.6.3 won't let me because "I don't have the necessary permissions".
So then I tried to add another account (clicking the "+" sign) but it again rejects me because the account "isn't a valid name" although I am using my account name.
I was able to read/write to this drive under Leopard but lost that function when I upgraded to 10.6.3. I can read the files on the drive and copy them to my iMac but I can't copy back to the drive. Is this a Finder problem?
How can I get the permissions changed on this external drive so I can read/write from my Admin account?

Okay, it is formatted as FAT32.
I checked under Airport Utility and there are (2) accounts that have permitted access, Dad (Read/Write) and Mom (Read Only). The drive is not corrupted as I can read/write from the Dell PC without any issue and I can "Read" from my iMac.
When I right click on the drive, "Get Info" and then check "Sharing/Permissions", there is only one account shown "everyone" (all small letters) with "Read" access. This account does not show up under "Airport Utility" so it is an account that Finder assigned.
My other two accounts, that are correctly shown under Airport Utility, are not shown in Finder. It seems like this is a Finder Problem and Finder (under Snow Leopard) won't let me access the drive.
So how can I change the Permissions in Finder? Even if Finder lets me add another account that can read/write, I'll be happy. But it won't let me add any accounts, it simply says "Invalid Account Name".
I'll try the direct hookup to the iMac as a last resort but this drive has all of my photos backed up on it so I don't want to mess around too much with it. I have photos on other drives as well but it is a big pain to reload from the other drives...it is around 300 Gb of photos.
