HDD formatting for OSX and Windows

How can I format a HDD so that it is readable and writable from under both windows and osx?

My "problem" is fairly simple.
My brother gave me 2 200GB SATA disks from his Windows machine with his data and a new 500GB WD MyBook external HDD and asked me to move stuff from his 2 200GB disks onto the new external 500GB drive. I copied the data from his 200GB disks onto my Mac, then formatted the 500GB drive like I would for OSX and copied it. He could not read it. I re-formatted it to FAT32 and could not copy much. Then I formatted it to NTFS using some very very old laptop I found but could not copy anything onto it. HAHA. So now I am stuck with 400GB of his data on my HD and I need to not only give him his data, but also rid my HD of 400GB of his stuff.
I tried doing the MacFuse and NTFS-3G but it did not work. I don't have access to his computer so I can't install anything onto it.

  • Hard drive formatting for OSX and Windows 7 using GUID

    Hey,
I am currently trying to format a 2TB WD Elements external hard drive so that I can use one half with Time Machine and the other half with Windows 7 (run using Boot Camp). From looking around online it appears that GPT is the best to use, and so using Disk Utility I formatted the hard hard drive into 2 partitions, one being Mac Os Extended (Journaled) and left the other as empty space. I then switched to Windows 7 (on the same machine) and formatted the empty space as NTFS. The problem is that now Windows 7 can see both partitions (and can see the contents of the HFS partition which I didn't think would be possible) but OSX can only see the NTFS partition (and has changed the label of the HFS partition from what I set to "disk0s2" when viewed in Disk Utility). I've probably done something very wrong, can anyone help?

you would have been fine had you set the free space to FAT instead.
You can read only from Windows to HFS unless you buy 3rd party HFS driver.
    Same for NTFS only reverse.
You do not need or want to use BC Assistant for that external drive. At. All.

  • Mac Pro - Separate HD for OSX and Windows?

Hello Mac Pro users - maybe some of you can help...
Are going to buy a Mac Pro soon - which will be used for graphic artwork and Windows games. Today I have a Mac and a PC - for the same purpose - and now I want to build the Mac Pro with a harddisk for OSX - and another harddisk for Windows (XP or Vista). Is it possible to have 2 separate HD's (or more) with each systems using the standard setup by Bootcamp - or do I have to make a partition on the OSX HD and then install Windows there?
I'm asking this pro forum because I can't get a clear answer here in Denmark where I live - a Apple supplier first said it was impossible - then 2 days later, that it was possible, but they will charge me for 2 hours of support - and in another forum some have told me it was easy - but have given me no help how to do it - and again some have told me to use some software called "rEFIt".
So is it possible - and hard to do?
If possible, please tell me in steps how to do...

Boot Camp will allow you to
utilise an entire disk for Windows. If you go to the
Boot Camp web page you can actually see it in a
    picture…
    http://www.apple.com/bootcamp/
The only thing you need to be wary of is that the
Boot Camp Assistant will not wrok from a Mac OS X
installation that is on a RAID set. As long as you
boot mac OS X from a single drive then it's really
    easy.
I had a setup for awhile of two drives in RAID-0 for my Startup drive, a backup single drive, and a separate 300GB drive just for Windows.
In Windows the "Startup" drive in Control Panel would not show the RAID-0 Startup volume, but I could startup from it by hitting Option when it rebooted.

  • Ho do I use one monitor for OSX and Windows 8.1 bootcamp

I am a long time Mac user, but find the fairly recent Apple switch to thunderbolt for monitor input very frustrating.
For several years I have ran a Mid 2010 IMac 27" and input video from a Mac Mini running Boot Camp Windows 7 using Target Display Mode on the IMac.
This worked fine until I upgraded to a Late 2013 27" IMac and discovered that the  IMac has moved to thunderbolt as the input for Target Display Mode.  The new late 2013 27" IMac just will not display native Windows 7 or 8 from a Boot Camp Mac anymore.
My problem is that I have two business/job related Windows apps that must run on a native windows 7 or 8 platform, and won't function under either Parallels or VMWare Fusion.
    I have tried.
And there appears to be no way to get any Windows machine with DVI or Mini Display Port output to drive a late 2013 IMac in Target Display mode.
So, with great frustration, I have concluded that I need to purchase a non-Apple 27-30" monitor, and drive it with either a Mac Mini, or my Early 2013 15" MacBook Pro retina, running one of the Macs into on of the mini-Display Ports on the monitor and a native Windows 7 or 8 machine into a second mini-display port, switching between the two video inputs.   The Dell 30" monitor seems to get the nod.
Has anyone found a better solution to switching between OSX and native Windows on one monitor?
    Thanks...

    Hi William,
I had the same experience in December 2013 and contacted Apple about it. According to Apple it's an issue of Windows with Thunderbolt. Your older iMac from 2010 is using DisplayPort and not Thunderbolt for the Target Display Mode. Note that just the connector looks the same but it's still a different technology. Please further note that the response below does not apply for the new iMac 27" with the 5K display because this iMac does not support Target Display Mode at all, hence can't be used as external display. Of course you can still attach one or two external displays to the iMac 27" 5K.
Hope this clears things up for you and the others.
    Thanks,
    Martin
So, here is the important part of the official response from Apple:
"... The Thunderbolt controller in an iMac is running exclusively in host mode. As such it cannot emulate a device mode Thunderbolt display. Instead it implements a custom Target Display Mode protocol that shares video between two peer to peer machines running with both controllers running in host mode. The "client" side of the driver does not exist on Windows so windows cannot speak to the "server" half in the iMac. There are no plans to implement a client driver for Windows since there is no Thunderbolt SW stack available for Windows. The reason this used to work is that the older iMacs used DisplayPort for Target Display Mode. In this scenario the iMac was able to expose the panel in such a way that it looked exactly like a Display Port Device which Windows does have driver support for. ... "

  • External Drive for OSX and Windows

    Dear all,
I read somwhere that it is possible to use an external HD which can be used as an intermediate for documents between a PowerMac and Windows 2000 computer.
The article suggested that when using the Disk Utility program of Apple, the Ext. HD should be erased using the MS-Dos modus. This I did. After that it mentioned that by clicking on the Partion tab, under the "Option" button MS-DOS file structure should be selected.
However my DU program says: "No Options Available".
I'm still using OS 10.3.9 and I will upgrade when OS 10.5 becomes available.
Question: Why is the "Options" button not available? If this is because of using 10.3.9 how can I bypass the option and make the Windows computer see the External HD as well?
    Thanks for your input,
    Hans.

For now, while you need 10.4.6 to select GUID partition table, you can still setup a drive with FAT32 partitions. Format it on Windows perhaps.
Disk Utility -> Partitions -> Options....
    GPL/GUID for Intel Macs
    APL for PowerPC
    Master Record Block for Windows
With Intel Macs you can install and run Windows XP SP2, Vista, XP Pro.
Hans, right now is probably the best time to update the OS. Tiger 10.4.9 is as complete as possible probably and esp. for PPC Macs. I think it runs better than 10.3.9 did.
While 10.5 will offer something different and new, the best time to upgrade is not when it is released sometimes, but rather once it reaches 10.5.3+ (ie, a year from now or later). Play and test it but depend on it 100%? Usually there are needed changes to software and hardware to "catch up."
Right now Tiger DVD 10.4.6 are available. Apple felt it worth putting out newer DVDs.

  • Format for Macintosh and Windows

Is it possible at all to have my iPod formated for macintosh but still be able to use it as a hard drive on a windows machine?

Mark, I have some questions about this. I just installed a new unformatted 60GB drive into my old 4G iPod. I am on a Win XP Pro platform so I did not want to use the NTFS formatting option before running Updater. I installed a trial copy of Macdrive, but when I try to Mac format that drive it says "An error occurred while examining Removable Disk (J:): Unspecified error". The LCD says it's in Disk Mode but I don't have the checkmark; it still shows the flashing Do Not Disconnect. If I try to Reset and put it manually into disk mode while it's connected via USB to my computer that doesn't work either. I have do disconnect it. I can then get the checkmarked Disk Mode symbol, but the moment I hook it back up via USB I get the Do Not Disconnect.

  • Formatting for mac and windows

Is it possible to have mi iPod formatted for both mac and windows? If so, how can I do it?
    Thanks

Now you can be 100% sure, StarDeb!
As another of the old windows guys, I had the same question when I made the change. Windows format works just swimmingly with Macintosh computers. Can't say the same for the other way around.
In fact, the iPod I had at the time, a 15 GB 3G (the one with the red buttons, and still the best looking of the lot), is still formatted for windows even though I have not had a Windows computer for several years now.
So enjoy the Powerbook (just bought a new to me G4 iBook, myself) without fear that the iPod will be a stumbling iBlock.

  • Shared home folder for OSX and Windows

    Hello,
I am wondering if it is possible to have a shared home folder for Windows and OSX.
We have an AD and ODS. Is this possible, if it is, using CIFS?
    Hope hearing from anyone
    Best Regards.

    hallo victor,
thanks for your answer. unfortunately this does not solve my problem. my sap landscape is more complex.
there are several sap installations in diverent windows domains and some are on as/400 (and there is another windows domain) all are in different networks and are protected by firewall. furthermore there is a rule (maybe some exceptions are allowed) that there must not be qntc connections over these firewalls.
with a shared folder between a windows workstation in one network and an as/400 in another network it works fine. but as a mentioned first - there is the problem with the sapservice<sid> userid which is to long for as/400 environment. I think there must be a tricky solution (hope so).
    kind regards

  • License for OSX and Windows

I am interested in purchasing a copy of PSE 9, but I am unsure on the licensing rules. As far as I can ascertain, one can have PSE installed on one notebook and one desktop on the same liscense, assuming only one can be used at any given time. If that is correct, how does this apply to different operating systems on each computer? For instance, I have a Macbook Pro (running OSX 10.6.4) and a desktop PC (running Windows 7 x64). Would I still be able to use the one license across both systems?
    Thanks for your help.

PSE9 is multi-platform so you can run both side by side, subject to a maximum of two installations.
If you ever need to transfer PSE9 to another computer you must first deactivate the Editor by going to Help >Deactivate (it will be grayed out in trial versions)

  • IPod classic formated for MAc and Windows

    Hello
I have a problem with my iPod classic. I use both Windows and Mac platforms and have iTunes library on both. Or course i would like to use my iPod with both as well. But each time i connect my iPod classic th any of the computers it asks me to restore the settings i.e. format it to either Mac or Windows. Does anyone now how to go around that problem, how to set it to work with both platforms?
    Thanks

I have a similar problem.. I have a normal iPod, and I originally used it on my PC. I recently got an iMac and now iTunes says that "..Windows formatted iPod's cannot be updated on Macintosh computers.." or something very similar to that..
Any tips/ideas?? Would be greatly appreciated.
BTW.. I still have the PC, but would just prefer to control my iPod from the Mac.
    Thanks =]
[edit] Ahh, have read another post about this. So if I restore my iPod, will the music be transferred automatically or do I have do do something else for that?? [/edit]

  • Compatable format for mac and windows

how do i make a document compatable with my iBook and my friends PC, i need to give her files i created on my computer, but nothing is working, not .DOC .RTF nothing. i need help!!!

The only way for an AppleWorks file to be viewed on a PC is for the PC user to have AppleWorks for Windows. However, there are many formats you could save the AppleWorks files as that most Windows users could use. For all of these, choose "Save As..." from the File menu & change the "File Format" in the drop-down menu. You do need to add the appropriate file extension to the file name as Windows does not know what program to use without it and AppleWorks will not add it for you.
    1. For pictures, JPEG (not JPEG 2000) is best. Add .jpg to the file name.
    2. For word processing, most will use Word Windows 97, 2000, XP. Add .doc to the file name. You can also save as RTF (.rtf) or plain text (.txt).
    3. For spreadsheets, save as Excel & add .xls to the file name.
You could also save any document as a PDF which can be viewed by Acrobat Reader. Essentially, you print the file to a PDF format. Choose "Print" from the File menu & click the button at the bottom of the dialog box that says "Save as PDF." You will get a regular save dialog box. This method does add the appropriate .pdf file extension, just make sure "Hide extension" is not checked. I have found, though, that many PC users don't have this installed on their computers.

  • Initializing HD, which format for mac and windows?

    Hi,
I would like to initialize an external firewire HD to be able to use it on mac and pc.
Should I just choose the FAT format in disk utility?
    Thanks!

this is about as good as I could find.
windows reads & writes ntfs, and fat32
os x reads and writes fat32 and mac os x extended.
os x can read ntfs (read only)
and fat32 can't handle large files or large disks.
spit it up and hope that no file is greater than 4gig
unless you can find the drivers for your xp or vista, you can't read a mac os x extended disk.

  • Data Doubler - Format for both OSX and Windows 7 to read/write?

Hello! I have a Mid-2012 MacBook Pro 13" and I've ordered the OWC Data Doubler with a 1.5TB HDD to put into the optical bay. I have a couple of questions.
    1. What format should I use for the HDD to allow both my OSX and Windows 7 sides read and write to it? I have a Bootcamp partition, but if it's possible I'd like for both OSX and W7 to be able to read and write to this drive. That way, when I'm in OSX I can view iTunes and media, but if I'm in W7 I can still have the same access. That way, I don't have to worry about "Oh, I downloaded this on the windows side ... I have to figure out how to get it over to the mac side" (or vice versa). Essentially allowing the 1.5TB HDD to be a "go between" for the two.
    2. This is a minor question, but will the eject button do something to the HDD if it gets pressed when the optical drive is out and the HDD/Data Doubler is in? I don't plan on pressing it, but I was wondering if I need to dig into terminal (or somewhere else) to "disable" the button or maybe just reassign it so that instead of ejecting it does some other function?
I have heard of "MacDrives" for Windows, but I haven't used it. If this is a better option (to put the HDD into Mac OS Extended Journaled and use an application to allow W7 to read/write) that's fine.
I am putting in the 1.5TB HDD. The end goal, if possible, is to allow the Windows 7 side to read/write to it. As long as it's not a "hacked together" method, I do not mind what way it's done.
    Any thoughts? I appreciate it!

Use Winclone for the Windows partition and CCC for the OSX partition.
