HDD noise when MacBook moved

I have a new 15" MBP (SD) with stock 250GB drive. I noticed that when I picked up the computer to move it, I heard the hard drive make a chirp/sound. I know you shouldn't be moving the computer when in use, but it's one of those things where you move it to the table or off of you and place it down.
So I tried it while just at the desktop, and I heard the sound. My 17" (2 years old) wouldn't make any sounds during such movement, so I was wondering if this is normal. On startup, I sometimes hear a chirp/sound that seems louder than anything I would have heard on my 17".
I'm not too worried as I'm not having any problems, and I'm thinking about upgrading to a 7200 RPM drive in the Fall.
Any thoughts on the sound would be great.
Also, would putting a 7200 RPM drive in the Mac make the computer significantly hotter, or require the fan to run faster/more often? I only have one fan, so if the additional speed of the drive would cause greater heat, I don't want to have to deal with fan issues. I want to keep my computer nice and quiet as it is.
Thanks,
Bryan

I wouldn't worry about it unless it starts making noise when it is sitting stationary.
As far as a 7200RPM drive, I recently put a Seagate 500GB 7200RPM drive in my MBP. It runs as cool and quiet as my stock drive did.

  • My CD drive keeps making strange noises when macbook first turns on or wakes from sleep

    Any ideas?

It started a few months ago, but I got the macbook about 3 years ago. It seems that it doesn't make noises when there is a disc inserted, but when it's empty it does (very embarrassing in a quiet library!) - it's almost like it's satisfied when full of food, but it rumbles when it's hungry. Any ideas?

  • Superdrive making clicking noise when Macbook is lifted

    Hello all,
I recently had my New 13.3 in. Macbook Pro displayed replaced and now when I lift the Macbook, the superdrive makes a clicking noise similar to the sound when a dvd-rom can't read a disc. There is no dvd in the drive during this time. I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing this problem with their Macbook Pro.
I have another question, when I received my macbook with the replaced display, the display had several patches of dirt and an line scratch underneath the screen. Will apple replace the screen for me again or is it possible to have the entire macbook replaced? This is very frustrating to have to send in my brand new macbook for repairs twice in one month...
Thank you advance for your help.

  • Subtle noise when scrolling, moving mouse, other screen activity

Let me say up front: this is *not* about fan noise. I know what fan noise is; I hear it like everyone else; this is something else.
The noise I am posting about is hard to describe, but it comes fairly close to classic hard drive noise but it can't be that in this case because my X220 has an SSD.
The noise occurs when I scroll in a window, or move the mouse across the screen. It is definitely associated with screen activity.
I would love to know what it is. I have it on another laptop as well (ThinkPad T61P).

I also noticed this noise and am curious as to what the sounds actually is. I can't imagine the CPU gets scaled each time the mouse moves a tenth of a milimeter.

  • Strange crackling noises when MacBook is connected to an external stereo se

Whenever I use my external stereo set for audio output once in a while I hear some clicking noises from the speakers, sounds like they are switched on and off.
Is this a generic problem or a driver problem?
    Thanks for advice!

  • Small clicking noise when moving

hello, ive only got the new macbook pro 13 the other day. when i slightly move the machine, it makes a small clicking noise (when its running with lid open), but it doesn't every time, like 3 out of 10 times. and i dont mean moving as in taking it into a different room, i mean like a slight move if i need to stretch or a wobble of my body with the macbook. any advice pls? thanks

My 2.53ghz 13" macbook pro is doing the same thing. This is odd because the 13" unibody macbook I had before this also has SMS and it never did this. If it is the SMS sensor, it is kicking in for very slight movements.
Could it be the SMS sensor is a little too sensitive? If so, is this something I should be concerned about?

  • Little clicking noise when computer picked up or moved.

is it normal that my macbook pro 13 makes a little clicking noise when moved suddenly or picked up ? it sounds like the optical or hard drive to me.

    Hi nomadikpat,
Your machine has an SMS (Sudden Motion Sensor) that is designed to park the drive head inside your hard drive when the machine receives a quick and sudden external force. This safety feature is designed to preserve the HD so that a mechanical failure doesn't potentially cause data loss.

  • How to Make my Macbook Pro's internal HDD external, when I get a SSD?

Hey, I know there are other posts on what enclosure you can use and if it's a possibility, but I haven't seen any that tell me how I get OS X on the SSD without a disc? Can I download the installer on a flash drive somehow? Also, I am wondering if this really is a good idea, using my Macbook Pro's HDD for a backup HDD, instead of buying one? I have no use for it anyway, if and when I get a new SSD. BTW, the HDD is the upgraded factory 500gb 7200rpm. Also, do you think it's smarter to have a bigger backup drive than internal drive? In other words, I would like to get a 1TB Samsung 850 Pro SSD, and my current HDD is only 500GB.... I am a musician and need a lot of storage for musical purposes. I use Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro X, Ableton Live 9, Office, and Photoshop.... My Macbook Pro is a Late 2011 Macbook Pro 15.4' 2.2ghz quad core i7 8gb RAM. Oh yeah and a mother thing is, I think I should get an enclosure that has a thunderbolt port with usb, what are your thoughts?

How to Make my Macbook Pro's internal HDD external, when I get a SSD?
Get an externel enclosure at the same time.
    You can order from OWC
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/
Put the SSD in the externel enclosure and use something like Carbon Copy Cloner,  to clone the internal drive and all it content to the SSD.  Then swap them out.
Always good to have more than one backup.

  • Is it normal for the MacBook Pro to make noises when I put it to sleep?

I apologize for posting a new question so soon, but I wanted to get my technical problems with my MacBook Pro sorted out before I go back to school.
I'm worried about this one thing that happens when my MacBook Pro goes to sleep. After I close the laptop and it goes into "sleep mode" every few minutes or so it makes this noise like it keeps on turning on then going back to sleep, turning on then going back to sleep. It never did this before. Does anyone else hear these weird noises when it's in sleep mode?
For some reason it does not make these noises when I press the power button, and then press sleep. So this confuses me.

I have the same problem after just having my logic board replaced.

  • My thunderbolt display makes a noise when plugged into my macbook pro laptop

my thunderbolt display makes a noise when plugged into my macbook pro laptop. It sounds like an electronic noise which doesn't come through the speakers. Any advice how to eliminate this?

Could be a poor ground.  Try plugging the monitor directly into the wall (no power strip) and see what happens.

  • Macbook pro makes a lot of noise when its is on.

Macbook Pro makes a lot of noise when its being used. It is the sound of the processor and it gets very hot at the bottom of the laptop. Any sugestions for why this is happening? Any solutions??

    Hi p,
The CPU doesn't make noise, so it's probably fans you're hearing, which would correspond with the heat you're feeling. Read this link to see if there's a process running too high:

  • X-fi Extreme Music - Mouse making high pitched noise when moved

I moved my mouse to all usb ports and it still happens, cant change my IRQ in bios and vista has them all locked out from being changed. I've never had pictures of the mod, as it is it wouldn't show up vey well in a photograph, not to mention that every front panel board is different from one manufacturer to another. Mine came with my Gigabyte Aurora case, but Gigabyte probably didn't manufacture the circuit board itself.
I had the noise problem when I first tried out my new Bose headphones with it and knew I needed to fix it. The main issue is the metal mounting studs that attach the board to the case front cause a ground loop with the grounds coming in from the sound card, as well as the motherboard USB headers. Having all these grounds just connected together like that is the root of the problem. By far the worst issue is the studs being connected to the foils on the board. Scraping the foil off the board where it makes contact with the studs will probably fix most of the noise. Next, cutting a gap in the foils between the incoming grounds from the sound card and USB headers will clean up more noise. If properly done, and all plugs removed from their headers, there will be an OPEN connection between any one ground wire and another, as well as there will be an OPEN between the chassis (case) and any of the ground wires. The ground wires coming from the headers should show a good connection to their appropriate socket ground on the front panel, but again, an OPEN between each other.

I don't have the same version of OS X here but try System Preferences>Keyboard. Is there an option similar to "Use the F1, etc, keys as standard function keys"?
If so, and it has a checkmark, uncheck it & see if that does the trick.
