HDD Noise.
Hey guys. I was wondering about the noise my HDD makes when I use it. It only makes these noise when I open up Speccy, refresh drive list on something like System Mechanic Pro or anything to do with system utilities and hard drive optimizations.
It makes some sort of grinding type of noise like it's been overused or something but that is not true because I purchased it only three weeks ago and it was like this since the beginning.
My Laptop is a Toshiba Satellite P750.
(Also I just made it do that noise again and it sounds like this. grrrreeeeetttttt.)
I'll put some basic specs of it. CPU Intel Core i7 2720QM @ 2.20GHZ Sandy Bridge 32nm Technology

You might want to check with the dealer about the noise. All hard drives make noise as the disks spin up and down. Also the read/write heads need to go across the disks. But it shouldn't be very noisy. Many dealers will allow you to return the computer within the first couple weeks. But after that they will send you back to the manufacturer for support.
Backup your files. Even if the hard drive never has a problem, you could still lose your files to fire, flood and theft. You could also lose them to a virus or malware. If as a knowledgeable user feel that the hard drive is too noisy, back up your data and make arrangements with the Call Center to get the computer fixed.

I got a mbp 17" c2d w/ hard drive noise, after taking it into store, and talking w/ the technical support, they replaced it for me, today I received it. And the noise is the same. Do all the mbp have hdd noise?
stock standard configuration: 17"/256MVRAM/2GRAM/Core2Duo
I checked the hard drive is hitatchiMan.
Belive it or not, some HDD's make noise. Nine makes a very very slight chunking sound sometimes, when its working heavily, and is a Hitachi 100gb 7200rpm drive I installed myself. This is perfectly fine and not indicative of problematic behaviour.
Some HD's are more quiet than others.
If the noise is very slight, and is not a very shaarp clicking sound, then you are probably just obsessing.
Maybee the model / manufacterer of the HDD is just of the louder variety, especially since the noise persists after you got it replaced. Hard Drives that are messed up in its early life, are very rare. Otherwise, if a manufacter has heaps of bad drives going out, you get something like the IBM fiasco from a few years back, where people stopped buying their drives. -
Hey guys!
I recently noticed the fan on my macbook pro mid 2012 13 inch to be a tad noiser than what it's use too, before the mac was so quiet you could hardly hear it working, now you can hear the fan noticably.
I checked out the fan app and it's roughly doing 2000rpm with the temp on the app saying it's around 48 - 52 degrees celsius when nothing is running other than safari.
I then used the temp app and got these results:
http://puu.sh/6QwfB.png
http://puu.sh/6Qwh8.png
I have also noticed over the last day that the HDD has got noiser, after running a S.M.A.R.T test it came back as verified but i am almost 100% sure that it is more noticable than before. The sound i hear is the read/write sound, i checked to make sure nothing was running and finder was not indexing or anything, it just to me sounds louder. obviously, as the mac is from mid 2012 it could of had some use so i am a bit worried about the noise incase it is starting to fail! (all files have been backed up)
I then noticed some issues with the windows partition i made with bootcamp, it became unbearably slow and would often crash when loading up chrome which is what it was not like before, i assume this points towards something wrong with the hard drive but i am yet to see any issues with OSX (will be taking it to lectures next week so im sure i can spot any issues then as i will be using it a fair bit!)
I hope i don't sound like too much of an idiot, i bought this macbook pro second hand (still has a year left of apple care!) and i am not 100% sure if the figures i have given are normal. I can live with the fan noise but the HDD noise is driving me insaine when in a quiet room!
Hope this is just me being silly, as i said im new to the macbook experience and hope to stay this way, hoping these are common things of a macbook and i'm just being a bit OTT.
Thanks!Okay,
Just checked my console and this one error pops up:
10/02/2014 12:06:48.000 kernel[0]: SMC::smcReadKeyAction ERROR TC0D kSMCBadArgumentError(0x89) fKeyHashTable=0x0xffffff801c040000
It seems to be doing it every 3 seconds or so!
EDIT: fixed this, was an app causing it! -
Hi everyone,
Technical Specifications for my Early 2008 iMac (per Apple Menu > About This Mac > More Info):
Processor: 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 6 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB
Software: OS X 10.8.1 (12B19)
Storage: 227.34 GB free of 319.21 GB
Discussion:
To my recollection, when I first purchased the iMac, it was silent. Recently, however, I have noticed that the HDD makes an audible, though quiet -- rattle. The Activity Monitor seems to indicate that the sound occurs when the computer writes data to the HDD; that is, when "Data written/sec:" increases from 0 bytes/sec, the sound begins.
I have recorded the sound with 'Voice Memos.app' -- with my iPhone pressed against the back of the iMac -- and have uploaded it here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/bpw3tgkw7xco03j/OJC6XK6HLk
In the previous recording, the sound in question may be heard in addition to the iMac's fans.
I've searched various forums and read several discussions about HDD noises, but I haven't come across a sound byte like the one I just posted. If it's a common sound that has people worried, I'd like it to be available for people to hear.
Question:
Does this sound "normal", or is my HDD on its way out? If the latter, how long do you think it'll be before it fails?
Thanks,
Rob
For the curious:
My iMac originally had 2 GB of RAM. Due to the demands of heavy computation, it was necessary to upgrade the RAM. I saw elsewhere that the iMac8,1 model may handle 6 GB of RAM -- despite Apple's claim of 4 GB -- and thus upgraded to 6 GB (purchased from OWC).

None of the above tests have indicated any problem with the hardware. Nevertheless, I understand that these tests can fail to identify problems. -
IBook G4 (Jun 2005 model) Logic Board Problem (No Display and HDD noise)
Hello All
I have been using my iBook G4 (1.2 GHz) with no problems since I purchased it in June 05. But over the past 2 days, I have been noticing this weird incident of "no display" when booted and I was hearing a loud fan noise at times and I can hear my HDD spinning etc. When I tried to restart pressing CTRL+OPTION and POWER after shutting it down, it booted up but reverted my PMU to a date in 2001 (resetting all my email, music etc). But when I tried shutting it down again and restarted normally, I heard the bootup chime but no display. Again, I could hear the fan and the HDD spinning.
I took my laptop to the Apple Store here in Boca, FL today and was told that its a logic board problem.
I know there was a Logic Board Repair Initiative from Apple for the G3's and early G4's. Does anyone know such a thing for the fairly recent iBook G4's??.
Any help is immensely appreciated.
Thanks

iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)How do I verify that my issue is a logic board issue. Recently, computer froze. Tried a hard reboot but no luck. It either shows a blank blue screen or I'll get the grey screen and apple with the start-up spinner but it'll stop spinning.
That's it. I'm able to browse the contents of the iBook's harddrive when I connect it to my Ti Powerbook via Target Disk mode. I even lauched Disk Utility from the powerbook and verified the iBook's drive and it found no problems.
Could it be the same logic board issues that you guys are having? How do I verify this? Is it worth paying to repair an 800mhz G4 iBook (applecare expired April '06)?
I've heard about kernal panic issues with the macbooks so I'm apprehensive about getting one of those right now too. Getting frustrated. Actually considered copping an inexpensive PC laptop... ugghhh. -
15" MacBook Pro i7 2.2 - Humming HDD Noise
The drive is a TOSHIBA MK7559GSXF, but it hums relentlessly the minute I power on. In most rooms it's not noticable that much (can still hear it over the fridge), but in a quiet room it's quite annoying. It's not beyond what I've heard on other brand laptops, so normal there, but for Apple...
- The hard drives of 2007 and 2009 MacBooks/Pros never made any noise under normal use.
- I've seen other people reporting it, especially with the Toshiba.
Is it normal?
Is it worth going to the Apple Store?
- My machine is a few days old, I would prefer a complete replacement (as I don't want them poking around inside and messing things up as they have for me in the past, just my experience). So, on that note, is it likely to get a replacement for this issue alone?
- If they'd be replacing it, I might as well upgrade to a High-Res screen (I'd pay extra), and perhaps the 7200 RPM HDD (same price, but 500 GB only). Do you think that's possible to do?
(Right now it's a 15" MacBook Pro i7 2.2 GHz with a 750 GB & 5400 RPM HDD.)Apple replaced it.
It was weird. -
I have recently started hearing noise emitting from my iMac whenver I install softwares or copy files. Mine iMac is fairly new (7 months old) and the sound was not coming earlier.
Would it be HDD or fan issue?Contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

Hi all,
I made some tests and found out that the most important noise is coming from the PATA HDD, it's the one making the low frequencies noise.
So I did order this :

I'll keep you informed of the results.

Hey guys,
I got my T500 about a month ago and love it bar the HDD (the 160gb version). It makes the usual sounds that a HDD makes but it also makes a constant quiet background beeping/whining sound...sounds like beeeeep or dedeeeeee (if that makes sense). Is there any way to get around this as it is really annoying in a quiet room.
Thanks

The clicking noise is nothing unusual and from my experience it depends on HDD which is built in the notebook.
Ive got two notebooks with different HDDs.
One HDD creates such clicking noise, the other doesnt.
On my Toshiba notebook the HDD protection Utility is installed which helps to protect the HDD drive from mechanical damage.
If this Utility is enabled or active, the head of the HDD is exposed. The internal accelerator sensor measures the vibrations and if the vibrations are too strong, the sensor unload the HDD head to avoid the disk damage.
If you want you can uninstall or disable this feature but Im not sure if this will eliminate the clicking noise
If you could not stand this noise, you could test another HDD -
HI everyone,
I just bought this macbook pro 15" on saturday and I have to say that I'm really glad of this laptop. But since yesterday evening I noticed two things:
First, when I open an "heavy" program, it seems like the HDD or the processor is making a weird noise, you know like when you're hungry and your stomach makes this noise? Quite the same...
Second, I also opened aperture 3/photoshop and when I zoomed on the picture(2Mb), the trackpad made a light sound, like there was sthing rolling... Is it normal?
Thanks,
Climax

Message was edited by: ClimaxHard drive noise is a very difficult problem to diagnose over an internet forum. As your friend said, it is quite normal for hard disks to make some noise. They are after all mechanical components with plates that spin at high speeds and arms that move back and forth to read and write. In my experience, these functions can create a faint hum as well as a faint chattering noise. Both are normal. Apples laptops are also equipped with a sudden motion sensor that will instantaneously park the drive head with any sudden movement. This tends to make a quite audible "tink" sound, as is normal as well.
Anything outside of these three noises is definitely not normal, and should be checked out at your apple store. -
I have a new 15" MBP (SD) with stock 250GB drive. I noticed that when I picked up the computer to move it, I heard the hard drive make a chirp/sound. I know you shouldn't be moving the computer when in use, but it's one of those things where you move it to the table or off of you and place it down.
So I tried it while just at the desktop, and I heard the sound. My 17" (2 years old) wouldn't make any sounds during such movement, so I was wondering if this is normal. On startup, I sometimes hear a chirp/sound that seems louder than anything I would have heard on my 17".
I'm not too worried as I'm not having any problems, and I'm thinking about upgrading to a 7200 RPM drive in the Fall.
Any thoughts on the sound would be great.
Also, would putting a 7200 RPM drive in the Mac make the computer significantly hotter, or require the fan to run faster/more often? I only have one fan, so if the additional speed of the drive would cause greater heat, I don't want to have to deal with fan issues. I want to keep my computer nice and quiet as it is.
Thanks,
BryanI wouldn't worry about it unless it starts making noise when it is sitting stationary.
As far as a 7200RPM drive, I recently put a Seagate 500GB 7200RPM drive in my MBP. It runs as cool and quiet as my stock drive did.

i purchased a brand new hp 15 r006tu laptop (Operating sys. Win 8.1)from market six month back. Besides the harddrive makes a very low noise like electric short circuit noise(kirrr kirr..... ). The noise is very low only audible when there is complete silence. Hard drive is change by hp one month ago, but problem is still.

Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I understand that your notebook computer is making a bit of noise when running tasks, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
According to DavidPK, an Expert on the forum, the sounds you are describing "sounds completely normal - you will always hear these sort of faint 'scatching' noises if you put your ear close to a mechanical Hard Drive during it's normal operation."
reference: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Other-Notebook-PC-Questions/Hard-Drive-Noise/m-p/2352657/highlight/true...
Just to be safe, you can also run a diagnostic test on your hard drive to ensure there is no hardware defect causing the sound. This can be done by following the steps in this document on Testing for Hardware Failures (Windows 8).
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, and I look forward to your reply!

Mac mini (late 2012) HDD ticking/clicking noises
Hey everybody,
So I picked up one of the new i7 Mac minis with the 1TB HDD and I have noticed sort of an annoying issue. I hear quiet ticking noises coming from the HDD which seem to occur randomly and I have noticed this happening when the HDD is idle. I was just wondering if anybody else had noticed this. Just as a test, close all your apps and go close to the mac mini and see if you can listen for the clicking/ticking noises. I want to see if others are having this issue before I take it in to get it exchanged.Yeah it's weird. I am sitting a couple feet away from it since it sits on my desk and I hear intermittent clicks from it which aren't very loud but they are louder than the regular HDD noise as the head is moving across the platters. If it is normal noise I can definitely live with it but if there is a chance that there might be a defect, I don't want to move my data to the drive, only to have it fail on me. As mentioned before, it only seems to happen when the HDD is idling.

U410 Constant HDD or Processor Noise
Hi there everyone, apologies if this is something that's been convered already, tried searching but could find no similar problems. Purchased a U410 back in early December and aside for some problems with it randomly shutting down without warning i've been reasonably pleased with it.
The only issue i'm currently having is with a constant background noise the laptop is making. It basically sounds like either the hdd or the processor is constantly hard at work with a demanding programme, even when it's idling on the Windows 7 desktop.
I've made sure no background programs are running, demanding services are turned off, I've turned off the Aero features... nothing that I can obviously see could be causing it, yet it sounds like it's rendering RAW images in Photoshop all the time!
If anyone could give me a point in the direction of how to cure it, i'd be most grateful. How much free space do you have? as virtual memory that uses your hdd for storage can go bezerk if you dont have a lot of free space, i normally turn it of if you have 8gb or more, or it could be hdd file indexing or anti-virus.
You could try disabling all startup programs using msconfig, if the hdd noise stops it`s one of them, try tuning them on one at a time.

Noise level core i7 "loaded" 27" 2011 model?
I'm considering a 3.4GHz Core i7 27" iMac with 8GB RAM and 2GB graphics card. What sort of noise can I expect from the fan due to heat generation form the faster CPU and extra RAM?
Unfortunately, Apple specs only list noise leve at idle and don't say what model.
Also, how good/bad is HDD noise?
(I'm currently using a _very_ quiet, but ageing, 3.2 GHz PC in a conventional case (i.e., easy to ventilate) and would like to switch to iMac.)Your Mac only has 24GB's of free storage space. That will definitely slow your Mac down.
Click your Apple menu top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Rule of thumb. Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
