  • External Hdd not detected

    Hi guys,
I've got this issue where my Macbook Air cannot detect my external hdd (not showing up on disk utility), where as my Mac Mini can. I assume it's a software issue. Both are running OSX Mavericks (Latest edition) and there is nothing wrong with my USB port in the Air (detects my mouse, flash drive etc.).
The hdds' LED no longer flashes when plugged in the Air but functions fine when plugged in the Mac Mini.
Is there any manual reset command (through Terminal) or setting in the Macbook Air without having to factory reset?
Thanks in advance for your help!

If the hard drive is bus powered (it doesn't have an independent power supply) the MBA may not be supplying enough power to the drive. This isn't an uncommon problem. I have a cheap external at work with this problem which I solved by plugging it into a powered USB hub instead of directly into the computer. Had that not worked I'd have tried finding an external power supply for the drive - or junking the enclosure.

  • Upgrading HDD - Not detected

    Hello!
I bought a 640GB WD Scorpio Blue HDD from NewEgg for myself for Christmas (:-) and a copy of Snow Leopard, all of which going into my 15" Early 2009 MacBook Pro (No SD Slot). Installation (physical) was a breeze except for the fact that the new HDD does not have the supports sticking out like the original factory HDDs. Therefore, it does not fit properly. That was easily fixed with some folded up electrical tape for the time being. Anyway...I ran the installer and selected restore from Time Machine Backup. I had my external HDD already connected, and it detected it. It took a while to detect the size of the backup (310gb - full HDD) and then it wanted me to choose my new HDD. PROBLEM! My HDD did not show up in the list. I then put my old HDD back in and put the new one in an enclosure to see if it would show up that way - no dice. I went into Disk Utility to see if it was there - No dice. No matter what I do, my computer will NOT detect the HDD. Apple Tech Support was no help - they said to call WDC. I thought of formatting the new HDD, but I can't because it is not detected. What should I do? Please help!
    Thanks!
    Ross

    Apple Support can't help you.
Have you looked at the trouble shooting info on the Internet? For example, you need to be certain the jumpers are correctly set (see http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?p_faqid=3656&pcreated=#jumper )
I'm sure that are lots of other possible problem areas. You should contact NewEgg for technical assistance.
I thought of formatting the new HDD, but I can't because it is not detected.
If you ever get it working, this is the FIRST thing you will need to do. It comes formatted for Windows 7

  • Sata HDD not detected in BIOS in K8MM-v

    Hi!!
I  have an AMD (athalon 3000+) plateform K8MM-v(vial K8M800-CE+VT8237R chipset) having two problems
    1.  NIC doesn't work properly, I inferrred it because the same setting of TCP/IP are working for other system but not for me. Windows always shows Restricted or limited access at nic status.
    2.  SATA HDD is not Detected in BIOS.
System is running with XP Prof. having ram 512MB.

Loading SATA drivers will not make the drive appear in the BIOS
Without knowing what hard disk he has, I can only speculate it is a SATA-II 3gb/s drive, which rarely work with the VIA VT8237/R chipset. You can try jumpering the drive to SATA-I 1.5gb/s mode, but there's still no guarantee it will work.

  • L520 second HDD not detected by BIOS, why?

    Hi everybody
It appears Schalli and I have same problem: a second hard drive (inserted in an aftermarket caddy) is not detected by BIOS. So you can not boot from 2nd hard drive.
But, if you start the OS (Windows or Linux or even DOS!), the second HDD is seen and works perfectly (no connection issues, full speed etc).
I tried several HDD, also SSD. Also tried removing internal HDD, leaving only HDD in the caddy.
    BIOS is 1.20.
    Can other users please verify?
Lenovo: why is this? Why doesn't BIOS detect the second hard drive?
    Thanks!!!

Same with my machine. So I put my SSD into the original drive bay and moved my HD to my caddy.

  • SATA HDD not detected in Bios K7n2 ILSR

Hi! I have a MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR and I just bought a new hard drive (sATA) but it is not recognized in BIOS. There are no options to enable sATA mode in the bios and I couldn't install WinXP even after loading the driver (by pressing F6 on the setup). The only way for me to install WinXP is by setting up CTRL-F and setting up an array for RAID BUT even after installing WinXP via RAID, the sATA drive is still not detected in BIOS. Is there any way that I can use the sATA drive without having to RAID it? Hope you guys can help me...Thanks!

Promise SATA/RAID controller on this board is a seperate chip, so BIOS has nothing to do with it.
to use a single SATA drive on this board, press Ctrl+F to set up a striped array and add the single drive to it, install Windows onto the drive, making sure you press F6 when prompted to use the Promise driver on the floppy disk

  • USB and external HDD not detected by OS X

    Hello.
Since last few months, whenever I plugin a USB pen-drive or an external hard disk, it seems at first that the system has not detected the disk, since nothing shows up in the finder and there is no way to access the disk also. The disk connection is complete since the lights turn on immediately.
When I remove the disks from the port, I get a message that I should first eject it and then remove the disk, which is not possible because I CANT SEE THE DISK ANYWHERE.
Now I plugin the disk the second time and IT GETS DETECTED.
I have to do this with every external storage disk EVERY SINGLE TIME.
Someone please help me find a solution to this problem.
    Thanks.
    Sankalp

    Hi James,
The USB hub will not function on a non-Apple branded monitor without connecting a USB cable from Type-B USB port on your monitor to one of your mac's Type A USB ports. The USB host bus should be beside your Display Port output on the monitor. Generally, a Type A to Type B USB cable will be included with your external monitor.
    Hope that helps.

  • New Samsung SATA hdd not detected by K8T800 Pro

I've been banging my head against this all morning, can't figure it out.
The BIOS I have (which is supposedly the most up to date version according to the live update) doesn't auto-detect the SATA hdd.  My IDE drives are there, an old zip drive is there, etc but it doesn't see the SATA drive.  I'm using an IDE hdd for the OS, the SATA hdd is for back-up purposes only.
Any tips on how to get this damned thing recognized?  I've been following various instructions online for awhile and nothing works so far.

Nonsense about the WD or Samsungs not working by the way. All work, you just need to set them right. And at this time, I wouldn't go for either Seagate or Hitachi. Too many problems with those brands, but that's some point to discuss somewhere else.
    Really, nonsense?
VIA have issued a statement on this years ago:
    Quote
CHIP FIRM VIA issued a note to its customers telling them of problems with chipset support for hard drives using the Serial ATA II standard.
It said that VT8237 and VT8237R chipsets don't provide forward compatibility for S-ATA II, which is important as hard drive makers are beginning to manufacture this type of drive.
But Via is readying the release of VT8237R Plus, which will solve the problem. This means that motherboard makers that use the former chipset should clear their inventory before September.
Hard drive manufacturers position with S-ATA II is as follows, said Via in its note. Western Digital and Samsung are already shipping these devices, while Seagate and Maxtor will start shipping them during this quarter.
If you connect S-ATA II drives to an old Via chipset which includes the VT8237, VT8237R, VT6420 and VT6421L, the devices won't be detected.
Some mobo makers, such as Epox, have already responded to the problem and have warned their customers to seek the support of hard drive vendors. In a letter to its customers, it said that they should also check the specs of other manufacturers' Via based motherboards.
Do some googling, it has been all over the net for years. I have had a couple of these boards and a fair share of different hard drives. Trust me, not all of them work on this board.

  • HDD not detected during Windows 8 installation in UEFI

ok well this is a little complicated to explain so m gonna summarize it as much as possible.
i have a HP Sleekbook 15-B002xx which came with a windows 8 OS installed already. due to some reasons, i tried to shift it back to windows 7. After many unsuccessful tries, i finally managed to install windows 7 by changing my boot sequence to Legacy Boot.
later on, due to lack of drivers for win 7, i installed, rather upgraded to win 8 which was running on legacy boot (using MBR if im not wrong). now, i want to install a fresh copy of win 8 with UEFI but the problem is when i change my boot sequence to disable
legacy boot, then during installation of win 8, i cannot see my HDD :(... im using a flash drive to install win 8 which is already in UEFI (i used diskpart for that).
also, when i use legacy boot and try to install windows, then the HDD appears and when i format the HDD and create new partitions, it creates 3 partitions (System, MSR, Reserved) and the fourth one for OS. i tried installing the windows like this but after
install, when i change the boot sequence to UEFI again, it fails to boot :(
now, i want to install windows to UEFI... and i really need help with this please :(... i hope i have explained the scenario... if anyone would like to ask anything, please do :(... as i really need to get this away... and also, i'd like to ask that how can
i check if my HDD has been changed from MBR to GTP?
im not that much expert with this stuff so i hope i have used the terminologies right... awaiting answer people :(..
    Thanx in advance

    Dear Sir,
Even i faced the same problem ad finally by the grace of God got it solved Here is how i did it
Boot the Laptop in UEFI Mode
    1) Download intel storage technology driver 11.7 or higher
2)copy this extracted zip file to a Fat32 formatted usb
    3)now install windows
When it reaches the dialog box where it asks the users to select the drive in which the os needs to be installed
you will see a load driver option beneath that
browse to the folder where the driver that you have downloaded is present and press next
After the execution of the following step you should be able to see the drives present and now you can proceed with the normal installation.
Hope i have solved you problem.
    Regards,
    Melvin

  • Satellite S1800-100 HDD not detecting

    Hi there,
I have just got an old laptop, the guy that gave it to me thinks that he had deleted the boot sector so it needed reformatting and reloading.
However I booted up into the windows 2k set up disk only to find that there was no HDD detected.
I then went into the BIOS to see if it was detected there to find that it isn't.
I just want to check that I'm right in thinking that the HDD is actually knackered?

    Hello
It is possible that HDD is defective but there can be also defective HDD controller placed on mainboard. If possible try to obtain other HDD and you will see if new HDD will be recognized properly.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum SATA2 HDD Not Detected HELP!

I have built 3 identical rigs, the rigs are in my signature. the problem i am having is that the SATA2 hard drives are detected by the bios, i have them plugged in the purple slots sata1 and sata2, When the drives are plugged in there the system runs slow.  What happens is when i put the windows XP cd in to install it starts to boot from the cd and gives me the part "setup is detecting hardware on the black screen" then that goes away and i just get a black screen.  The same problem occurs on all 3 rigs.  The only way i can manage to get everything working and with windows installed is if i use the orange sata slots which are sata5 and sata6, but then i have to use it as raid.  Currently have them setup as raid0.  I was wondering if anyone knows a solution for the problem.  Running the drives on the orange slots doesnt use the 300MB/s  only runs them at 150MB/s.  The only thing i can think off is that we would need a BIOS update to correct the problem with the sata2 hard drives.  Seems to me like other people here are also having problems with sata2 hard drives.
Any feedback or sugestions would be apreciated.

    gffreire,
I am the person who started the tread you referenced.
The Problem must everyone is having is with true SATA II drive the have 3 Gb/s speed and NCQ features.
The fix for all of this takes two things, (1) BIOS V1.A and earlier have a problem and (2) all current nVidia RAID drivers posted, unless they have posted some thing new in the last day, that include 32-bit and 64-bit have also got problems.
I have tested a new beta BIOS and Beta driver for 32-bit when used together, they work.  The new-posted BIOS V1.B appears to have the BIOS fix in it, but currently posted, RAID Drivers still have no fix incorporated in them.
Send me your E-mail address by Personal Message and I will send you a copy of the Beta 32-bit drive.  So, if you upgrade to BIOS V1.B and are installing the beta driver, during clean install, it may solve your problem.   However, be remaindered this driver is pre-beta and also does not includes no “xxx.cat” file.  Effects on your system could be anything.  I have gotten it to run using a clean install on both of my MS-7125 MBs.

  • Satellite Pro A60 - HDD not detected by BIOS

    Hi to all !!
I've been given a Satellite Pro A60 (PSA65E) , for free ....'cause it has a bug!!! But I would like to fix it and use it.
Problem is that HDD is not recognized by the BIOS. Strange enough, it is possible to format it during initial phase of an OS installation from scratch ( I've tried with Win XP and Win 2000 ), but installations do not proceed further since it will not boot from HD. If I try to install a seccond time, it does find some data already present in the HD and gives warnongs ... meaning that it is also possible to write on the disk.
BIOS screen says : no drive.
CD drive is OK, shown as secondary.
I did also search through the Fora at no avail.
    Actions done so far :
    * flashed the BIOS , now at 1.90 release
    * Replaced the original HD (Toshiba, 40 GB ) with another one known to be good , smaller ( Toshiba as well , 30 GB)
    * Tried to pull out CD drive and verified BIOS does recognize it has been removed, and recognized it again when put back in. The same manouvre done with the HD does not change anything in the BIOS screen: it always says 'no drive'.
    * Tried with DOS version of Partition Magic : it says 'no drive found'. Same with the backup disks that came with the PC.
    * Tried other stuff found in Fora : remove all power sorce, let the PC for several minutes.... opened up and checked for visible problems in the HDD area and so on.
Any suggestion would be be appreciated !!!
    Thanks

    Hi to all!
I've spent some hrs to try to find out what is going on. I surrender. The result stays the same: Satellite Pro 'sees' just non Toshiba HDD's. Toshiba HDD's work fine on other notebooks. Tried also the available Toshiba HDD's on a third unit. The only explanation I can guess of is that Satellite BIOS queries the installed HD something that other notebooks do not, and most of the HD reply as it expects and others ( Toshiba's ) do not.
The most suspected item remains BIOS, IMHO.
Talked also with the guy who handed over the broken Satellite to me: no help... he just stated that he never had a problem since the beginning and then suddenly one morning he could not IPL anymore. Oh well, he got lost with the back up CD's, due to the 'strange' behavior of the problem. Taking into consideration that it was possible to R/W from the HD but not to IPL, it is understandable.
I think we can close this thread, unless somebody from Toshiba Storage Division can shade some light....or the Bios guru, maybe.... it would be nice to know.
Thanks to all for the attention

  • Hard disk not detected- HP630 laptop

my HP630 just froze and comes up with one message, HDD not detected. I want to save all photos (data ) on the laptop if possible, so dont want to re-install Windows from CD booting without having an experts advice. if i conduct any tests (such as testing what is wrong with the hard disk or the state of he hard disc) the test freezes midway.Tried booting through USB, but the BIOS does not have that option. Please can anyone help? Many thanks.
if any more information is needed please let me know

    Hi,
I would suggest removing the HDD from the notebook, place it in an external caddy - an example is on the link below - connect this to another PC and see if you can access and back-up your files.

Any test for logic board defects?
    Much appreciated guys!!!
    Thank you.

    My1stMac_RC,
given your investigation, it reads as though the internal SATA cable is the culprit — it seems to be a problem in 2009 models.
For future reference, since you have Mavericks installed, you could have also tried booting into Recovery mode.
