HDD replaced but need my windows key to reinstall Win7

CQ61-312SA Laptop
Hard drive failed so fitted a new one.
Borrowed a copy of Windows 7 to reinstall but need CD key and the print on my licence label has been scrubbed away so cannot read it.
Does HP keep records or are they all installed with a generic code from the recovery partition?
Would copying the recovery partition from another laptop work - have access to a CQ61-4xxxx?
Have tried contacting HPsupport but as my warranty is expired I am blocked from asking.
Any help would be appreciated.

I don`t have any recovery discs but I do have an image of a windows 7 HP Recovery Partition (CQ61-423SA), would that do? As far as I am aware that laptop had an Intel Motherboard.

WINDOWS PRODUCT KEY - for reinstalling WINDOWS

What if your computer comes with NO Windows Product Key sticker -- computer came new with Windows 7 preinstalled but, included Windows 8 installation discs - never needed a key & should've (in hindsight) made a boot repair disc - but, recently computer would NOT boot up - tried to repair it but, no luck -- SO, now if I want to reinstall Windows 7 will have to use an OEM but, need a Product Key for HP computers --- any time else you install Windows you are REQUIRED to enter your own Product Key # which is about 25 digits including letters, numbers & dashes ---------- I do have Windows 10 on another drive but, love Windows 7 -- Windows 10 is far better than 8 BUT, not as good as 7 I have looked all over my case for any WINDOWS sticker & inside too -- I have heard that laptops are usually under the battery but, for DESKTOPS will be stuck somewhere on the case & this does NOT have one -------------- it is just STUPID for HP to ship computers without a PRODUCT KEY as every other manufacturer does for this reason..THANKS

Uhm as far as I know Operating System of these unit didnt came with product keys, because operating system of this unit is from the manufacturer, And it was never been installed using standalone discs by hp. You might need to order recovery discs online on its support website. as far as I know. Hope you dont mind.

I need to reinstall Windows 8.1
I don't have my purchase confirmation emal anymore, i tried to redownload windows 8 or 8.1 to create a bootable Flash Drive to install from, but my current product key didn't let me!
So i figured that i need the Windows 8 product key from which i upgraded to 8.1 and got a new key, to redownload Windows 8 and then upgrade to Windows 8.1!
The problem is i have no clue of where to find my genuine Windows 8 key that I have purchased and downloaded from the web..

That is the problem, i do not have anything there but red text saying "You haven‘t purchased any downloads yet."
Yet, i can find and see my purchase of Windows 8 with my Bank in the transaction section.
I have even requested a physical CD/DVD which i have gotten, a blue paper flip-case with 32bit in on side and a 64bit in the other.
What am i to do now ???

Once the label is worn, you cannot get another key for free. You are better to order a recovery disc set from HP, then you dont need a key

The Intuit rep said they don't "support" QuickbooksPremier on a "virtual machine." Do you know what I risk by using it, anyway? thanks for the advice about Boot Camp vs Parallels, BTW!
I use QuickBooks Pro for Mac, so I haven't had need to try any of the Windows versions in a VM. But I can't think why it wouldn't work. From within the VM, QuickBooks Premier would believe it is operating on PC hardware within Windows.
I would guess they mean that the multiple user support wouldn't work from within the VM. But I would think that would also work. Windows can see the Internet from within the VM, which means it can see your network. So if Windows can see the network, then QB Premier should be able to, too.
I know you can get Parallels as a demo, and maybe you could get QB Premier as trial software. So if you already have a retail copy of Windows to load into a VM, it would only cost you time to test what's possible.

I Need the Windows Product Key for my Laptop

I had to use my recovery disks and Microsoft was not able to validate the software online. When I called Microsoft support, I was told I needed the Product Key. When I looked under the bottom of my laptop, one of the numbers/letters is worn and hard to read. I was told to contact HP. When I attempted to do this on the website, I got a message that HP no longer services this laptop. I don't need service. I just need information. All of the HP product information was nicely sealed and secured. I don't understand why the same was not done for the Windows product key. Thanks.

Check everything to make sure all is working OK. I do not think it is necessary to reload the OS if everything is working. There are other ways to get it activated.

This is a user supported forum. I am a volunteer and I do not work for HP.

Sent U510 in for warranty repair (HDD Failure) and am told the HDD was replaced, but it was not.

I told them that I ran a diagnostic and the HD shows as failed. I ran several tests and it's booting up slow, crashing, freezing, etc. Seemed to be a pretty clear situation. I would fix it myself but money is tight and I don't want to void my warranty by doing so. I called up and explained this.
So I sent it in over a month ago and patiently await information. The Depot Status page showed me that they have determined the failing part and were waiting for the part to become in stock. I thought this was odd, because hard drives should be a dime a dozen in a repair facility. Still... I waited patiently.
Finally, my laptop comes back to me on Monday the 19th! I open it up and the invoice inside says that a SSD drive was replaced... My main drive was not replaced but the 24GB SSD allegedly was. I had some things installed onto the SSD, so I turned it on to take a look. None of my data is gone. The system looks/works JUST as it did when I sent it out! It's still slow, the HD still fails the tests, and all my data is there as if NOTHING was done at all!
Now I'm livid. I sent it out and waited nearly a month for this and it looks as if NOTHING has been done. Worse than that, the invoice claims that a drive was replaced when it's clear that's a lie. I'm completely beside myself now. What do I do? Who on Earth do I contact to get this taken care of in a timely manner!

Apple HDD replacement program Q's

Hi guys, sorry if my questions are quite trivial but I'm afraid of messing something up that will require multiple Apple store trips and or money. Long story short I finally decided I'm going to take my iMac to my nearest Apple store to be serviced under the HDD replacement program announced last year.
But I have a few questions about the whole process and how to make sure everything goes as smooth as possible.
1- I undesrtand I have to have a Time Machine back up or HDD Clone. Some people here actually recommend not to use the latest Time Machine back up, But instead doing so from a HDD Clone. Why?
2- I know I'll be erasing the old Drive before taking the iMac for service, what's the best way to do this?
3- Do I need to take my after market bought RAM before taking the Computer for service?
4- For those of you who have already gotten their machines serviced: do they return it with Mountain Lion already installed on it?
5- After getting the machine what will it be the best option, Use Set Up Assistant or Migration Assistant, and will I get accest to that by booting up while holding
the "C" key?

1. My preference is to use a clone. I made a fresh clone; the tech replaced the hard drive; we booted from the clone and cloned the system back - very fast process and your machine will be in the exact same state as it was before.
2. Boot from your new clone (or your install disk) and use Disk Utility to erase your drive (you can't erase the drive you're booted from).
3. No.
4. I had mine done at my home (compliments of Applecare) and instructed the tech to use one of my clones. I've heard differing reports - some say ML was installed, others said that they got it back with the original system. If you have a clone, it does not matter what they install - simply boot from the clone when you get it back, erase the drive, and clone your system back.
5. If you use the clone method, no Migration Assistant is needed.
Edit: If you have a clone on an external drive, you simply plug in the drive, hold the Option key at boot up and choose the clone to boot from. From there, launch CarbonCopyCloner and clone your system back.

Replacing Win 2008 webserver product key after creating VM

Windows is demanding I enter original key (which I don't have) before I can I enter my own product key
See the steps below how I got to this stage:
1. I created a Virtual Machine of my webserver using VMware.
2. I moved the VM to a new host OVH.com
3. Windows Activation was required, but I did not have the product key
4. I googled and found this command to clear the old key slmgr.vbs -ckms
5. I did not realise that I needed the old key to activate and then I could add my own key
6. I tried to retrieve the original key using 'magic jelly bean' but without success.
Now I am having problems with the license and it is saying my windows is not genuine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I tried Microsoft but they are asking for £199 to open up a support case?
