HDD Speed - 1.5GB/sec vs 3.0GB/sec

I just realized that two Seagate SATA's that I installed in my MP are running at just 1.5GB/sec and not 3.0GB/sec that I'm sure they're capable of in this machine. A major Daaaaaa on my part when I installed them. Seagate installs a jumper as a factory default that holds the speed to 1.5GB/sec. The system is on one of those two drives. If I pull the jumpers on these drives (this supposedly brings the speed up to 3.0GB) at this point will I mess anything up, especially on the system HDD?
BTW, Realistically, would I notice a speed difference or is this just a sales gimmick? Would it cut down on a the appearance of a spinning beach-ball now and then? And is there a utility that I can compare the two speeds while I'm at it to see if it's real for myself?
Thanks for any help,
Tony

Dear Tony,
Removing the jumper will not effect the data on the hard drive. During my tests with the Mac Pro it is difficult to determine any difference with the jumper on or off on the Seagate hard drives when the drives are configured as JBOD. A slight 2-4% upgrade can be seen when a striped RAID set is configured with the jumpers off.
With that said I leave the jumpers off of the 7200.10 models when using them with the Mac Pro.
Have fun!

  • Vista Business Extremely Slow HDD Speed

Just installed Vista Business on a brand new MacBook Pro 15". Installation went completely without hiccup, all hardware appears to work fine.
However, I am trying to transfer 30Gb of data to the internal HDD. I have tried transfers over the network (Gigabit), from an external USB 2.0 HDD, and internally from the Mac partition to the Boot Camp partition. Under no circumstances can I achieve a transfer rate higher than 1.5 Mb /sec.
Any ideas? All updates have been installed...

t3kka wrote:Reading around on some other threads I found regarding a slow login to tty I noticed some folks state that a large root partition could be the problem.  My HDD is 500GB with the root, var, swap, and home partitions being ~80GB, ~20GB, ~6GB, and then the remainder as in home (respectively).  Maybe having a large root partition along with the location of the home partition makes the HDD head travel a much further distance which is physically equated to a delay in login and other actions.  With such a large HDD, what would you recommend for partition schemes?
I have a 640 gb 5400rpm drive, and I've installed arch with only a huge root partition on it in the past, and had no speed issues (currently I have a 40gb root and a ~595gb home and a 5 gig swap).

  • Mac Mini Intel SATA 1.5gb/s or 3.0gb/s ??

I want to upgrade the HD to Fujitsu's MHW2160BJ ( 100MB/s ) but this is default SATA 3.0GGB/s and I do not want it to run at SATA 1.5GB/s or close to the junk I have installed in it now or at half speed then I might as well keep the junk that is inside it now.
SATA 1.5GB/s defeats the purpose of spending money on a HD.
SATA 3.0GB/s justifies it as then I will in Win on bootcamp be able to get 100MB/s instead of the default Seagate 33MB/s or the replacement Hitachi 7200rpm running at 45MB/s in win on bootcamp.
I am frustrated with the poor HD speed in OSX 10.4.9 the same Hitachi running at 45MB/s in win on this mac mini intel runs only at max 21MB/s in OSX.
So the hardware is good but a setting / ??? in OSX slows everything down.
    Result = Need faster HD Fujitsu's MHW2160BJ .
OR need info on how to correct this slow OSX performance.
40MB/s+ in OSX if it can take the Fujitsu's MHW2160BJ would really be nice provided it can do SATA 3.0gb/s
    NB:
Found info on intel website about 945 based laptop type motherboards being locked in SATA 1.5GB/s and their desktop motherboards have the SATA 3.0GB/s enabled / installed / working.
    Page 35 form Intel PDF " 30701303.pdf "
    Any ideas ?

This Mac mini developer note indicates a fixed 1.5Gbps on the SATA hard drive connection:
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/HardwareDrivers/Conceptual/Macmini_0602 /index.html
There does not appear to be a newer technical note about the current 1.6/1.8GHz current Mac minis, but the lack of one might indicate there were no significant changes.

  • HT1657 My download speed is 35Mb/sec but from iTunes i only get 100-200 kb/sec. Normally it works perfect, but today my small SD rented movie takes several hours. Why?

Rented Ronal the Barbarian 1 hour ago and it take ages to download. My internett speed is more than 35Mb down and up. The download speed from Itunes is about 150kb/sec. This has never happened before. Can anyone tell me if this is a local problem on my side or if itunes are not able to deliver?
    Lommelom

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

  • Mac Mini 2014 and SATA HDD speed/negotiated speed settings question?

I have a new Mac Mini 2014 2.6GHz i5 - with the Hitachi 1TB 5400RPM drive running OS 10.10.1.  It is working well and is a worthy replacement for our 2007 Mini.
Today I was looking around the specs and settings and noticed the SATA settings for the HDD drive showed the link speed at 6 Gigabit but the negotiated speed is set to 3 Gigabit.  I have searched around and read about people having issues with other chipsets or hard drive firmware incompatibilities with other models of Mac.  Why would this be?  Is it due to the drive only supporting 3 Gigabit?  Searching for the drive model seems to indicate it supports 6 Gigabit.  Thank you in advance for all responses.

I greatly appreciate the prompt responses and link information.  So, really other than a modern SSD, or high RPM drive, you will not reach the benefits of a 6Gb connection let alone possibly max out a 3Gb connection.  Which for a mild daily use Mini would be overkill.
    Thank you.

  • Want high performance HDD speed, any hints?

    Hi!
I have the 7200 rpm type of HDD as stated in my profile, chosen because of the extra speed compared to the 5400 rpm one. I haven't got space for a Mac Pro so I'm stuck with this laptop. I've examined disk utility and it seems as if I am able to use RAID 0 on this machine. I'd like to have striping on my system partition and read about FireWire 800 and the Expresscard slot. What are my options when it comes to improve the speed of harddrive reading?
    Any suggestions welcome!

FW800 and the ExpressCard slot are for external drives. You're talking about 7200 vs 5400 rpm for your internal drive. If you're looking into external storage, eSATA via ExpressCard will be a little faster than FW800, yes.
Any RAID type other than RAID 0 is for data integrity, not speed. RAID 0 offers lower integrity, and again is irrelevant for your internal drive, unless you plan on removing your optical drive and replacing it with a second HDD - striping across two partitions on the same drive reduces speed (there's only one set of heads!).
So, we really need to know what, specifically, you want to do, and why.
If speed is truly important, you won't be using a laptop anyway - you'll need a desktop machine like the Mac Pro that uses 3.5" and higher rpm drives. Anything you can do with your laptop to 'get higher read speeds' is really pretty marginal, by comparison. 10K rpm desktop drives are still 15-20% faster than the fastest SSDs.

  • PowerMac G5 Quad HDD Speed?

    Hi everyone,
I was looking to get a fast boot drive for my PowerMac G5 2.5GHz quad. I read that 10.5.8 and below won't ever support TRIM so SSD is a no for me.
I then saw the newest line of WD's Black series and noticed the read speeds were starting at 150MBps which is what the G5's SATA is limited to as it's SATA 1.5.
That being said, do you think the HDD (WD5003AZEX) would still perform at 150MBps at the G5's SATA 1.5 cap or less as its a native SATA 6 HDD? I figured it would still perform at 150 but I wanted to ask the community.
    Thanks in advance!

If it works, it should be the same rate as a regular G5 does, here's my G5 Quad Internal Raid0, so you should expect around half this speed...

  • What is the HDD speed on Satellite P200-155?

    Hello,
I am interesting on Satellite P200-155 or Satellite P200-143, but I don't know Hard drive speed.

    Hi
The P200 series is very new and as far as I know since several weeks on the market.
Such new generation notebooks use a newest HDDs!
After a long investigation on several internet sites I found out that this notebook was delivered with a 160GB 5400rpm SATA HDD!

  • Upgrade HDD speed in Thinkpad T530?

Hi all. I just ordered a Thinkpad T530 with the 1TB, 5400rpm hard drive. I'm now having second thoughts about that drive and wondering if I should upgrade it myself to a 7200rpm drive (it's too late to change my order).
I will be using this computer for Adobe CS6 programs such as Photoshop, InDesign, and After Effects. I will also probably be running Linux in VirtualBox. Will the 5400rpm hard drive make these programs run noticeably slower than a 7200rpm HDD? I also have an i7 processor and 8GB of DDR3 RAM.
If you think it's worth it to buy a 7200rpm drive (probably a smaller size), where do you suggest I buy it? I'm not sure how to tell if a hard drive sold online will be compatible with my T530. And can I get a Windows disk from Lenovo to install Windows on the new hard drive without having to purchase a whole new copy of Windows?
    Thanks!

    'afternoon...
    welcome to the community.
first, i recommend that once you receive the machine, use the "Create Recovery Media" function found by searching for same from the Start Orb (or in the Control Panel, i think). i like creating on DVDs. second, contact Service and request that they send you a factory recovery DVD set. functionally, both sets will do the same thing, namely, restore your machine to a factory-delivered state.
once you have these in hand, you can consider how you want to configure/reconfigure the storage systems. personally, i would look into getting a mSATA SSD for OS/swap/temp/apps and using either recovery set to image it, and then repurposing the terabyte drive as data/documents/video/photo/etc.
    cheers.

  • Betadeck to iMac, SDI- external HDD speeds?

Im trying to capture from a betadeck with an IoLD via SDI to my iMac's external Harddrive.
I am getting constant dropped frame errors.
My external harddrive is a 5200rpm drive. We are guessing that the drive speed is too slow, and the information is too much to handle for the drive.
Will a 7200rpm or 10,000rpm drive fix my problem, or is it something else?
    Thanks
    -Mike

    Good guess.
5400 RPM can barely manage DV. Now that you are getting into uncompressed SD, you need a FW800 hardware raid solution, like the Firewire VR by CalDigit or G-Raid2 by G-Tech.
Oh...wait, you already have the I/O LD connected via firewire...and you are on an iMac. Well...this setup is less than ideal. You only have ONE firewire bus, so using it for both the capture device AND the media storage won't bode will. Dropped frames will be very commonplace. iMacs ain't designed for uncompressed work..this is why. You really need a MacPro or MacBook Pro that have expandability...ability to add additional firewire buses, or connect to eSATA RAIDS.
So it isn't only the drive speed, but it is the iMac.

  • How Do You Verify HDD Speed?

I received my replacement MBP and I was wondering how do I verify that it's a 7200 RPM drive? I looked under system profiler and there's no indication of speed. The model number is: ST9160823AS.

    Google... it's a wonderful thing:
    http://www.seagate.com/docs/pdf/datasheet/disc/dsmomentus_72002.pdf
It would appear that model is a 7200RPM Seagate drive.

  • SATA HDD Speed

Have had sata drive for a couple of weeks and it seems to have slowed down considerably, Sandra 2003 pro reports a speed of 21454.

  • USB HDD speed drops after 150mb

I'm making a backup of my MacBook Pro. I have copied everything without problem but my iPhoto library is delaying everything.
I copied my music folder and my documents which are many files no more tha 10MB each. When I try to copy my iPhoto Library (which is only one file around 45GB) it goes well until around 150MB at like 10MB/s and then it drops the transfer speed to 100KB/s and it says it will take around 15 hours to finish.
I changed my MacBook hard drive for a bigger one (from 320 to 650) and i'm using the old one as an external drive with a case.
I formatted my external hard drive as exFAT because I constantly move between Windows and OSX and sometimes need to transfer files from both OS.
Any help will be very appreciated as I am doing a backup because I sold this MacBook and I need to get it done as soon as possible.
    Thanks!

Time Machine needs to have the disk formatted as HFS+ and GUID

  • New MacBook Pro Purchase: HDD Speed: 5400rpm & 7200rpm

    Hi,
I will be ordering a MacBook Pro from the Australian Online Apple Store tomorrow, and I was doing some research about the hard disk drive speeds, and which is better. I have read so far that of course since the 7200rpm hard disk drive spins faster, it will have a faster read/write speed, but I have already read that this means it will decrease the battery life, produce more heat, as well as produce more noise.
I will be using my new MacBook Pro as an addition to my current iMac, and will therefore not be doing my photo/video editing on it, I will mainly be using my new MacBook Pro for email, word processing, iTunes, iWeb, web browsing, a bit of Photoshop, and other student activities. I do however want my laptop to run smoothly, quickly, without producing excessive heat, and have a good battery life.
So, should I choose the 5400rpm, or that 7200rpm model?
    Thanks!

When you first get it the faster drive will help a bit with photoshop editing and encoding in iTunes, PFAD. For the rest the difference will be minimal.
In the longer run, size matters more than rpm. As drives get closer to full they get slower. If I had a choice between a 7200 RPM 320 Gig drive or a 5400 500 Gig, for example, I'd go with the latter every time. It might not be quite as fast when new, but it will usually beat the pants off the other "faster" drive when they both have 250 Gig of data on board and after that the advantage of the bigger, slower, drive will continue to grow, both in speed and stability.
But, then, of course drives keep on getting cheaper, so the other option is to buy the faster, smaller, one now and simply replace it when it starts to get fullish. The drives are very easy to replace on current MBPs.
"Come in Spinner!" (Dymphna Cusack once promised to proof read my first novel. Unfortunately she went and died before I finished it. Well, before I started it. Well, I must start it sometime in the next couple of years before I hit 60. I'm truly sorry, Dymphna. I have always felt I have let her down).
It is a real toss up. Maybe your wallet (and anticipated trends there-within over the next couple of years) , rather than the size or speed of the drive, really holds the best answer! Hey, you could spend the price difference on RAM or software instead!
    Cheers
