HDD spinning like mad every few minutes....

I've owned this Macbook for a few years now and for the past few months I've had a more and more difficult time working due to the hdd spinning like mad. I could open any application and within a few minutes I hear the disk spinning for a good 5min or so, slows down and starts up again within a few minutes. This causes everything to hang while it spins. I don't understand why it's doing it but it's extremely frustrating to work with. I've checked the system profiler/diagnostics (power on self-test) with passing results.
Any reason why this would happen? I'd love for someone to enlighten me on this before I call and get my @$$ on hold....
Thanks in advance!

Hey I think I had same kind of problem few months back...... My macbook was making such a great sound that I was too much worried.... But then some one suggest me to see in utilities in activity monitor and close the program that was having threads more than 30 or so.And after that my mac is running now normal. So I suggest u to check for same thing...some time it happens that although v have quit any particular program it runs in background as it has not completed it's work and if then also the program does not get quit from list remove that particular files or documents that makes it run..... I think if this is the problem in your case everything will be fine when u complete there steps.... Good luck

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs.<br />
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.<br />
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.<br />

I think the other devices are fine.  I'm not sure.  It usually only happens like a couple days out of the week.  I do know that the network I'm using when I click on the wifi symbol at the top of my screen doesn't have a padlock on it.  It IS MY network that is at my house, but maybe that has something to do with it.

I ran an EtreCheck on my laptop and this is what the report said. I've had this laptop for about 4 years and it just started freezing up around a week ago. The spinning wheel pops up every few minutes, slows down everything, and makes it extremely frustating to be using the laptop.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

  • New G560 crashes every few minutes windows 7 BSOD 0x00000124

We just bought the new G560 using windows 7.
    The system crashed after the first 10 minutes with a BSOD;
    it crashes constantly/every few minutes.
    The code is 0x00000124
I see comments from others that this is a hardware conflict.
This is a laptop started crashing right away during our first moments of opening an IE browser.
There were any changes and no added software.
We have since made sure it has all the current Microsoft updates but the problem continues.
I don't find any other users of this new laptop with any postings but it looks like it has a serious problem right out of the box. No clues to be found here or in the Microsoft site.
Can anyone help- let me know if there is any more info I can add to the thread

    @ tenmnd
if you have any mini dump file, please, upload
( copy the recent two or three files from c:\windows\minidump to desktop then upload somewhere on the web, like rapidshare.com )

  • Lockups every few minutes

Here's my issue. Running 10.5.4 on a 2x3ghz Mac Pro with 4gb of memory. Every few minutes the mouse and screen completely lock up. I get a spinning beach ball, and it stays this way for about 30 seconds. Can't move the mouse or do anything. Then it "releases" and I can move the mouse again and do what I need to do. The weird thing about it is that it happens very regularly, and almost always when I try to use something (like opening the dock, opening an application menu, etc).
    Anyone have experiences like this?

  • DW CS3 slows to crawl every few minutes

Every few minutes as I am using Dreamweaver CS3 (under Vista
SP1), the program becomes unresponsive and my processor maxes out
(the Task Manager shows DW as hogging the CPU). I wait for what
seems like minutes -- but is probably only a few seconds -- and I
get control again. It happens repeatedly but I have not timed the
intervals between them to see if it is a consistent time. It seems
as thought Dreamweaver is busy doing something but, for the life of
me, I don't know what as it happens regardless if I've made any
changes to files or not -- it happens if I just sit there and watch
it. Anyone else have this problem? Gord

This problem has plagued me since CS3's release. I have three
    different
workstations, two on XP Pro and another with Vista and it's
    the same
regardless. If you google for "dreamweaver cs3 slow" you will
    find lots of
hits, especially with Macs, however I don't have a mac. There
    is a KB
document that tries to blame your antivirus for scanning all
    the .js files
that Dreamweaver uses making it slow, however, excluding
    those files from my
resident scanner never changes anything. Also, Dreamweaver 8
    runs like a
champ and I continue to use that on each of my workstations.
I feel rather cheated since I was really wanting to
    experiment with SPRY on
CS3, however, since CS3 is such a dog, I have never had the
    chance. Now I'm
looking at alternative AJAX libraries and Aptana instead.
    Also, they got my
agency's money already for 5 licenses of CS3, but I never
    OK'd it for use by
the rest of the web team so everyone remains on version 8.0
    for now and I'm
currently evaluating CF Eclipse as an alternative. The only
    thing that was
holding me back before was I occasional use the GUI layout in
    DW but Eclipse
3.4 has added that feature. I'd have stayed with DW if only
    CS3 worked.

  • Idle Super Drive, makes noise every few minutes

My empty and idle super drive will make a mechanical noise, which sounds like the initial motion before the drive drawer opens (perhaps the head seeking and moving). The sound is an annoyance and obviously something is moving and therefore wearing. This happens every few minutes, even when the computer is idle. The drive works fine, both reading and burning. Anyone know what is initiating this movement and how to stop it?
    Thanks!
    G5 Mac OS X (10.4.8)

My PowerMac G5 drive makes the same noise. It's been happening ever since 10.4.6.
About every five minutes or so, the superdrive will sorta spin up like it's about to read a CD-ROM even if there's no CD in the drive.
It's sorta annoying but I'm more worried about the extra wear and tear on the drive.
I haven't been able to figure out why this happens.

  • Macbook pro ( 13" mid 2009 ) keeps freezing every few minutes since downloading mavericks

Ever since downloading osx Mavericks , my mac book keeps on crashing every few minutes. Doesn't matter what application I am using, system hangs every few minutes. I have been looking at Activity monitor closely. Following programs end up using a lot of CPU and hang a lot:
SystemUIServer ( not responding -- several times )
Google Chrome ( not responding -- several times )
Google Chrome Helper ( not responding -- several times )
PepperFlashPlayer ( not responding -- several times )
Windows Server ( not crashing -- but using a lot of CPU resources - remains at top 5 CPU usage tasks. )
Looking at Console app .. following programs cause a lot of crashes: ( Console itself was not responding several times I was looking at it )
    systemstatsd
    GoogleChromeHelper

StartupItems can slow your Mac down.
Go to HD > Library > StartuItems
    Remove this:  ChmodBPF
    Restart your Mac.
If it's still slow, open System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items
Remove Google Drive.  (iTunes Helper should not be a problem)
    Restart your Mac.

  • Firefox 3.6.6 crashes every few minutes or freezes up even when i'm not doing anything

For the last few days, firefox has been crashing or freezing up every few minutes. It seems to be independent of what websites i'm on. Firefox either just freezes up ("this program is not responding") or will crash entirely and i'll get the firefox crash console. I've tried disabling all my addons and that didn't help either. My explorer seems much more stable.

  • Streaming video (using Videos-app) from MBP 13" to iPad 2 and iPhone 4S is stuttering/lagging every few minutes

I have imported a number of movies and tv shows into my iTunes library. This library is located on an external USB 2.0 hard drive which is connected to my MacBook Pro 13" mid 2012. I use an Airport Extreme (5th gen.) as my network hub, everything is connected wirelessly through either the 5GHz or the 2.4GHz wifi signals.
Whenever I watch these videos on my MacBook itself of my AppleTV (3rd gen.) everything works just fine, no lag or stuttering. But when I want to watch these videos on my iPad 2 (6.1.2) or iPhone 4S (6.1.3) using the standard Videos app, I get lag and/or stuttering every few minutes just like you would when an internet video isn't loading fast enough. Speedtests indicate a stable internetconnection (fiberglass) at 30Mbps up and down, and internet videos (i.e. Youtube) stream just fine, even the 1080p ones. That's why I don't think my networkconnection is the problem.
Frankly, I don't have any idea where to look next. I checked all settings in iTunes (homesharing is enabled, any other settings seem to have no relation with this subject) and the iPad/iPhone, restarted the devices completely but not with any improvement.
Why is this happening? I'm used to Apple products having an optimal user experience, but in this case it's just not working like it should...

Try putting one of those movies onto your macbooks' drive and stream it and see if you have the same lag.
It's probably not being pulled from that external drive fast enough causing the lag.
I know you can watch it off your macbook fine, but you're pulling it onto the laptop, then pushing it out to the router and data transfer is always slower the more 'stuff' you give it to pass through.
For example, I can pull stuff off a harddrive at a gig a minute....but if i pull it off one and write it directly to another (using the computer as the go between) i get about 75% speed.....something that should take an hour can take almost an hour and a half.
So try streaming directly off your macbook and see if you stutter.

  • Disconnect/Reconnect every few minutes

I just had Fios installed 4 days ago.  I've got a M1424WR wireless router.  Firmware up-to-date, 2 computers one wired one wireless. and every few minutes I'm disconnected from the system and reconnected.  Almost every web site has to be reloaded 2-3 times until there is a response.  The Verizon Tech phone support didn't see anything wrong with the service or router.  As a matter of fact, 6 lights are lit on the router and when this happens they generally don't go yellow or go out.  It just looks like the connection to the router is fine.  I've rebooted the router, even rebooted the back up power.  I have a feeling that there is just a setting somewhere that needs to be changed.... anyone have any ideas?  For reference, it's a lenovo laptop, IBM build.  I'm desperate to get this resolved as it's impacting my work.

Well, you have two computers. one wired and one wireless.
Do both of them drop connections or just one of them? If both, do they drop at the same time?
If it is just one of them, then I'd look at the connection itself or the computer. If it is both, then I'd look at the router or verizon network.
Assuming it is both. You've already rebooted the router, did you try resetting the router also? Also try reseating the wan cable to the router as well. If your still having an issue at this point. I would call tech support back and ask them if they can pull up the history log on the ONT. This will hopefully tell them if the drops are happening on the inside or outside of the house.
Do you have any other fios services? Telephone or TV? Do they have any issues?

  • My Airport Extreme Disconnects From the Cable MoDem Every Few Minutes

    Hello,
I start a new topic as my previous title was wrong and there was no suitable answer.
I have had an Airport Extreme for 3 years and it sometimes disconnects after a few minutes. Actually, it more looks like that the Airport crashes: the "PC Link" light on the cable modem goes off, the Airport lights go off and I cannot find my Airport Network any more on my computer.
When this happens, I can either unplug it from the power and plug it back in, or simply move the Airport around a little bit, and it will re-start. Sometimes the problem does not re-occur for a few hours or days, sometimes it keeps happening every few minutes and of course drives me crazy...
    Is it because ... :
    - ... my Airport has a faulty connection and I should replace it?
    - ... there are power surges in my electricity installation (eg this seems to happen when I or my neighbors have air conditioners on, I live in one of those old New York buildings with old electricity installations), and I should get an anti-surge device, or a newer Airport would deal with this better?
    - ... of something else? I tried replacing the Ethernet cable between the MoDem and the Airport and it failed, there does not seem to be a source of interference around my place.
    Thanks for your help!

I have had similar problems. Not as bad as some of you but usually in the morning I discover that I have dropped onto someone elses wireless they are not as fast. Then I have to troop upstairs, unplug the Extreme, replug it and then everything is allright until the next morning. But it is sporadic. It has run fine now for a few days. This problem has persisted now for a year. And yes I have tried resetting it.
Next month I plan on going to the big city and I am going to take my Extreme to one of Genius' at the Apple Store. I am curious if anybody else has tried that solution and how much it might cost.

  • My Airport Express Disconnect From the Cable Every Few Minutes

    Hello,
I have had an Airport Express for 3 years and it sometimes disconnects after a few minutes. Actually, it more looks like that the Airport crashes: the "PC Link" light on the cable modem goes off, the Airport lights go off and I cannot find my Airport Network any more on my computer.

    Thanks for your help!

First, my mistake: I have an Airport Extreme base, not Express.
Second, I am sorry, I do not think it is interference.
I lose the connection to the CABLE, not the base, it's like the BASE crashes. How is that interference? It's not about the signal but about the connection to the cable. The cable MoDem does tell me that the connection is lost, as I said ("PC Link" does not blink anymore).
Finally, there is nothing in direct proximity of the Airport Extreme base that looks likely to do this: the computer and the base are 6ft apart, there is no microwave, no power line, no cordless phone, no bulletproof indow ...
    Any better idea, anyone?

  • Losing wireless every few minutes

My macbook pro is losing its internet connection every few minutes (wireless on at&t 2wire router). I have to stop and restart airport to regain connection.
Other macs on the same router work fine. On this one, istumbler will not launch. It worked once then get unexpected error crash after that. Is that a clue?

iStumbler depends on a stable wireless connection to be able to display any data. If you can't establish a good wireless connection, iStumber cannot run.
Any cordless phones in the vicinity of the MacBook? Any other electronic devices like televisions or amplifiers near the MacBook? Any metal obects like a cabinet or bookshelf near the MacBook?
