HDD upgrade advice needed on Qosmio X300-112

I own a Qosmio X300-112 laptop which contains two 200GB SATA harddisks. I'd like to enhance the storage on this laptop by removing one of the harddisks (the non-OS one) and replace it with a bigger one (1-1.5TB).
What is your advice in this matter? Can I choose any harddisk I like?
Any brand, as long as it's SATA-300 2.5"? Maybe a "Toshiba MQ01ABB, 2TB"?

Hi
The notebook supports the SATA interface.
I think the HDD interface (controller) supports ATA-6 (Ultra DMA/100 also called Ultra DMA mode 5 orUltra-ATA100) and this SATA controller should support the LBA 48bit
The LBA 48 bit allows the usage of HDD size up to 2 PETA bytes (1 PiB ~ 1000 TiB Terabytes)
Therefore the 1TB HDD should be supported by HDD controller BUT the question is if the BIOS would be able to handle such HDD size but usually this should not be a problem for BIOS too
However, please post some feedback after you tested such HDD

    Hi there!
    I currently own a Toshiba Qosmio X300-112
It runs on windows Vista Premium Dutch Version
All seems to work well exept for the Chicony Webcam.
When i start the Webcam it behaves as is should when there is enough daylight.
However when the daylight fades /when it gets cloudy a light blue colouring appears in the right bottom corner of
    the video viewer.
When there is no natural light left, during the evening this blue colour is quite visible in the right bottom corner.
it has a visible area of approx 3 by 4 centimetres.
I' ve already searched the whole internet for similar problems concerning this chicony webcam however i cannot find any results.
Technical support of toshiba couldn't help me either, they even stated that the problem with the blue colouring occurs on any toshiba laptop with this type of chicony webcam mounted.
I cannot image that this is true because i never heard some one about this.
What i can mention about this problem is that probably is a problem which is only found in the Qosmio x300 series.
The evidence i found was a detailed picture of the LCD lid from the qosmio X300 on the toshiba site.
The position of this webcam was exactly the same as with my notebook.
When i add all these findings together, other user should experience this problem more or less.
Is this true? Can anyone post if he / she experiences the same problem?
    Many thanks
    with regards

    Hi there,
For some reason my original account doesn't work anymore, very strange.....
However, before people start removing accounts i would like to mention i solved this problem and would like to share this knowlegde
    with other people.
After a lot of work to make my point to Toshiba repaircentre Netherlands they confirmed that the Chicony webcam in the Toshiba Qosmio X300 isnt positioned correctly. After my contact this problem is forwarded with high priority to the Toshiba factory where these notebooks are being manufactured.
    If someone would experience the same problem;
For me the solution came from the repair centre, they will open the LCD panel and create a 'wall' between the blue LED and the Chicony webcam with the help of some basic materials.
This topic can be closed, i hope my help can help other people who purchased this type of notebook as well.
    With regards.

  • Upgrading the processor in Qosmio X300

Hello, I bought a Qosmio X300-01U from bestbuy in Canada about a year ago and i would like to know a few things about upgrading it.
    1. Can i upgrade the processor from my old P7350 to a Quad core processor or a core 2 extreme processor that supports my motherboard(PM45)?
    2. If i can upgrade it, do i need to install an additional fan (since there is an empty slot for another fan.)
    3. Is there any additional hardware i need?
    4. Would the performance boost be significant?
    5. Finally, would this upgrade cause any problems?

    Hi
I think nobody here can answer your question because here you can talk with normal people like you and me For such technical questions you should contact an authorized service provider.
But I dont understand why you want to upgrade the CPU I doubt that this will bring a strong performance boost.
In my opinion every Qosmio X300 is fast enough for all applications and I dont see a reason for making such a risky upgrade.

  • Dual drive configuration HDD upgrade advice

I have an Early 2009 17" MBP that currently has an 80GB Intel SSD and a 500GB HDD.  The SSD has the apps and system files, the HDD has my Users folder and all my data.  I'd like to upgrade both drives (120GB SSD and a 750GB HDD) and would like some advice on the best way of doing this.
Would it be best to just get a full TM backup of my current config, then install the new drives, do a clean install of OS X and then restore from the TM backup?  Is there a better/easier way of doing things?

Get an external drive drive enclosure for notebook drives. When you get the two new drives install one at a time into the external enclosure then clone the internal drive to it - SSD to SSD then HDD to HDD. After you have cloned the SSD verify that the new SSD boots the computer. If all is well then swap the old drives for the new ones.
You should clone the drives using Disk Utility.

  • New mac pro upgrade advice needed or keep the old clunker

I have a 2008 mac pro with only 8gb ram
I am use the  computer for FCP and Logic as well
as photo editing.  It is not my livelihood I am just a serious hobbiest.
My option is to go with a new Mac Pro probably 8 core with 1 TB
I would have to get an enclosure for my 4  thunderbolt internal drives.
    I also have 2 firewire 800 2T external drives.
My monitor is a 30 inch cinema display
so an 8 core with 64gb plus 4k monitor and upped graphics card is $11,600 add my buisness discount i am probably
    looking at around $11,000
My other option is to keep the clunker add a 1TB SSD PCIe card form owc and add 8gb ram this will
cost me $1,400. I am really only throwing away the $200 for increasing the ram as
the PCIe ssd drive can be salveged and used in the new mac pro if I bought an pcie/ thunderbolt  enclosure.
Tha advantage of going this route is I could use the clunker for another year allowing time
for the kinks in the new mac pro to be ironed out as well as the advantage of faster chips in next years model.
The other issue I have is a use a Universal Audio PCI card with 4 sharc processors to run specific plugins that need that
card in logic.  That card will no be compatible with the new Mac pro and the replacement cards are over $1000 that are compatibe

On this page Apple compares the 2012 Mac Pro (12-core) to a 2013 Mac Pro (12-core). The new Mac Pro performs about 3x faster at rendering. You didn't say how many cores your Mac Pro has but you could expect about a 4-5x faster performance increase.
I would have some questions for you:
How much time do you spend waiting on your current Mac Pro?
How much money are you willing to spend for a 4-5x increase?
I have a 2010 Mac Pro with a 960 GB OWC Mercury Accelsior E2 PCIe SSD, program launches and computer restarts are much faster. Compressing video takes the same amount of time as it did when I booted from a hard drive. I can't read or type email any faster, iTunes plays music just as fast as it always has with a hard drive.
I would use Activity Monitor to monitor your computer's memory use while you work with FCP and Logic to see if you are maxing out your memory then adding more may be the way to go.
I use my Mac Pro for recording over-the-air TV and compressing that video into an Apple TV usable format. I've found that having a dedicated drive for capture works well. Also, when I compress the video my capture drive becomes a dedicated source drive for Compressor and I write the output file to a separate dedicated drive. This ensures I maximize data flow and keep all my cores nearly fully utilized. I tend to do the processor intensive tasks (compressing video which can take hours) at the end of the day when I know I won't be using the computer (or only doing light work on it such as email or web surfing).

  • Satellite P100-307 exchanging HDD Help/Advice needed

    Hello,
Thanks for your recent advice on exchanging my 200 GB HDD in to an 500 GB Sized HDD.
Can you please let me know, what i have to do with the new HDD so that my P100 can recognize it (do i have to format it etc.) ? I would like to mirror the existing HDD onto the new one.....how does it go ?
Sorry to bother you with this Beginner-Questions........
    RGDS

Windows will recognise a new hard drive (I presume you will be booting the machine from cd) and it it needs formatting it will tell you. You may then have to change the format from FAT32 to NTFS - Windows help will tell you how to do that..
If you are wanting to mirror the old disc image onto the new disc then I think some google research is in order eg "mirror new laptop drive" there are old versions of disk imaging programs availanble for free download that will handle NTFS. names to search for include Acronis and Norton Ghost.
How are you going to "connect" the old and new drives - eg external usb caddy, across a network, mount both drives in a pc.
You can copy the all files using the DOS command xcopy with the include hidden files/folders switch.
Does your old drive have a hidden partition for recovery purposes and you need to decide how you handle that.

  • Upgrade advice needed

    Hi,
I currently use logic express on an emac G4 with 1 gig Ram and only a 40gig harddrive.
I want to upgrade to logic pro and have a bit of money spare but I was wondering which would be the most cost efficient way to do it.
    Do I:
    1) Sell the emac (ebay?) and reinvest in an imac G5 with logic pro
    2) Upgrade to logic pro and somehow improve the performance of the emac to cope with running it (external hard drive and things)
Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Pete,
The answer depends on what you plan to do with Logic Pro that you are not now doing with Express. (Do you really need pro?) For the basic things, Pro is not going to be much different performance-wise, and audio will use the same amount of disk space. However, if you're upgrading to use the fancier plugins, then the higher performance machine makes sense.
In my opinion, you will want and external hard drive either way. Performance is better and you don't clutter your startup disk with tons of audio files.

  • Intel Imac vs Dual G4 800. Upgrade Advice Needed Please.

I have a Powermac G4 dual 800 loaded with RAM and 3 huge HDs and a 15' monitor. I use the Adobe CS2 suite and Macromedia Studio 8 as well as the ilife stuff and Toast. I am in desperate need of more screen real estate. I want to buy a 20'' or 23' display but it would also cause me to spend at least 200-250 to upgrade the graphics card. So I'm lookin at 1000-1300 just for a new display. Seems like a lot $ince I can get a 20" imac for nearly the same. Ive had this g4 quicksilver for a while and its still awesome but besides the screen size a "lil" speedboost would be nice. So...
    1. If I buy a G5 Imac am I kind of throwing money away when I can "buy for the future" with a core duo?
    2. If I buy the Intel Imac 20" will my adobe and macromedia apps run better under Rosetta than a G4 Dual 800. Or Will I be stuck with practically unusable(like virtual PC slow) software. Any experiences?
    3. Should I buy the G5 Imac 20" and let the Intel Core Duo work out the kinks for another year and enjoy better adobe/macromedia performance.
I know these are common questions right now but I was curious about real world performance compared to a G4 dual 800.

Lets say you got the Core duo. I have a 17" and have used CS2 on it, and considering it is being emulated, it is still pretty fast. I have also used CS2 on my friends G4 DP 800 and let me tell you, the iMac is faster. If I were you, I would buy more ram than comes standard. The iMac G5, to me, would be an unwise decision now with the Core Duos.
The problems with the Core Duo are mostly software based from what I can tell. Hanging, Front Row, Remote issues...etc. Once the new OS X update comes out, they should have far less kinks. In the event that you want to wait for the kinks to be worked out and buy a later model, then stick with the G4 until then. It is a workhorse and will get the job done. But thats just my two cents...

Hey everybody, I would like to u[grade my Late 2011 17" Macbook Pro.
    8GB DDR3 RAM

    OSX 10.7.4
So after reading on Crucial.com that I could house 16gb ram, despite what apple said, I investigated this and according to people this is tr
So my next question is, will i be able to fit a 512GB SSD from Crucial into my MBP? THe only reason I feel it's a valid question is I had the option of 1 and 2Tb Hdds WITH a 256GB SSD.
    Thanks for reading everybody

The only way that you can use both a SSD in your drive bay and another hard drive is to install the hard drive in your optical bay. If you're willing to give up your optical drive, OWC sells kits to do just that.
Then you could use your external drives for data storage & backups.
    Is this a workable option?

  • OS Lion Server to OS Mavericks Server Upgrade Advice Needed

    a) Has anyone successfully done this on a corporate, AD bound, production, 10.7.5 Lion Server server with active Profile Manager accounts, 3rd party certificates, file sharing etc?  I'd like to assess probabilities of getting this done without having to rebuild a machine and re-enroll all of my profile manager clients.
    b) Can anyone provide high level steps towards achieving this goal - or - is the following general upgrade path correct?
    1) Upgrade OS Lion (which is running OS Lion Server) to OS Mavericks - THEN:
    2) Upgrade OS Lion Server to OS Maverics Server
    c) Is anyone running OS Lion Server successfuly in a corporate or professional arena and supporting the items above in red?  If so, what are some of the "gotcha's" you ran across?
Q: Why am I wanting to upgrade from OS Lion Server to OS Mavericks?
A: Just discovered that OS Lion Server Software Update Service (SUS - now "caching server?) doesn't support Mavericks clients.
Note: I do keep an updated SuperDuper image of the system/startup drive.
    Thanks.

Same issue with me. I am a new mac user, actually Mac Minii server is my first mac. I am not interested inthe server aspect but rather the pure Lion as I also plan to install bootcamp with windows 7. (Sorry but I am not ready for a full pc to mac migatrion). Being the only user of the mac mini does ot make sense to have the full server installed.

  • IMac G5 Intel Core 2 Duo - OS upgrade advice needed

Im running an Apple iMac G5 Intel Core 2 Duo with OS Tiger 10.4.7.
I am planning to upgrade to Leopard. However...I thought it would be as easy as just purchasing installation discs for Leopard. Now I find out that the install might not work on an Intel machine? Is this correct? Not as easy as just buying a 'OS Leopard box set' on eBay for example - do I have to actually make sure its OS Leopard Intel? Iv looked on eBay and THEY DONT SELL 'OS LEOPARD INTEL' DISCS!!
Secondly - my girlfriend wants to use my old 'Install 10.4.7 discs' on her G3, Im guessing because they came with my Intel machine -that they wont work on a different machine? You can imagine Im quite wary of running a OS upgrade on another machine if its going to pear shaped.
    HELP!

First an iMac G5 is not an Intel Core 2 Duo. You have either an iMac G5 PPC or an iMac Intel Core 2 Duo. That said, the retail disks for Leopard will work on either a PPC or Intel, so you should be good to go.
Second your iMac machine specific disks will not work on another machine let alone a PPC. They are machine specific to your model iMac.

  • HP Pavilion DV6-6165tx Upgrade Advice Needed

Hi, I purchased HP Pavilion Dv6-6165tx and now I have to upgrade my laptop RAM.
Here are the two models i have selected and i'l like to know if these both models are supported by HP DV6 6165tx.
    1. http://www.snapdeal.com/product/transcend-jetram-ddr3-4-gb/1430631
    2. http://www.snapdeal.com/product/transcend-jetram-ddr3-8-gb/1430575
    Please reply ASAP

In your laptop, a pair of either would be supported. Since you have an Intel processor your laptop can handle up to 16 gigs of memory, 2 x 8 gig DDR3-1333mhz SO-DIMM.
    Your Service Manual
    See Pages 5-6.
You are better off running two identical size and speed modules so it will be dual channel

    Hi there,
Specs: as per Qosmio X 300. SSD 110GB, pentium core 4 extreme, 4 Gb RAM, plenty free storage on SSD (29GB), NVidia drivers with primary being GE Force 9800 M GTS, Direct X10.  there is also a note down the bottom saying that if i have linked graphic cards (whihc i do i believe there are three), that i can expect better perfomrance with some software.
Ok I aplogise from the outset, i am a layman and not that techie. K.  So the issue that I upgraded recently (last week) from vista ultimate 64 bit to windows 7 64 bit. ultimate.  For the main, I am reasonably happy with the outcome in most areas - except gaming that is. I have increased speed and agility and the processor is now rated at 7.2. WEI. overall the laptop is rated at 5.8. however, getting back to teh reason for writing, I have nothing negative to say about windows 7 (as compared to its predecessor) apart from wishing to resolve my game crash issue. which usually occurs about 15 mins - 20 mins into a game and comes in the form of a shutdown ? BSOD from whence the laptop reboots when prompted at on/off and wants to know if to start normally or in various safe modes. I have noticed that the laptop does become very hot at the back (around the fans) prior to teh shutdown, and i am wondering if this is an overheating issue, and how to resolve if this is the case. the only other thing i have noticed that seems untoward is that i have apparently lost a wireless jump start driver from the upgrading process which i cannot find anywherre, and may be totally unrelated to this issue anyway.
All i want to do is play the games i could play on windows vista ultimate 64 bit. these include: Sims 3, sims 3 world adventures, sims 3 ambitions, highloft end stuff, and Bioshock. Oddly enough, i have played sid meyers civillisations revolutions IV (the latest one) with no crashes, and i havent tried ANNO 1404, but fear a similar fate may await this game as some of the others.
    Addditional information:
everything is as i described it above, however the screen does not go blue but black, and the laptop shuts itself down,  laptop acts as if hibernating mode? (these are guesses) or some mechanism geared at preventing over heating - the back becomes very hot.  the machine can be rebooted from normal mode but comes up firstly with a screen suggesting that the laptop was incorrectly shutdown, and offers options as to safe mode, normal etc. i have been starting normally with no adverse effects.   This is scenario one.
scenario two ends up similarly at teh reboot stage, but gets there differently. i play the game and the screen freezes, unable to move touchpad curser, unalbe to use ctrl alt del to get up task manager. end up having to crash to reboot.
I am quite frustrated and very reluctant to mess around with things that i dont understand (dont want to make the problem worse!). I am happy to attemtpt to follow your good explicit advice.
the only other negative thing i am expereinceing is screen flicker on internet. I have changed my power mode from high performance to balanced to try to nullify the overheating issue but i now am noticing this screen flicker which is irriating and appears on keystroke, or cursor movement.
Please note well:  I am a layman, not a technician! Please explain in easy to (dummy) terms! Thanks!
    kind regards
