HDD upgrade on Mac Book Pro - Which HDD?

Seagate Momentus
Western Digital Black Scorpio
Hitachi Travelstar
and...
How much heat does a 7200 rpm drive generate?

Welcome to Apple Discussions
My 2¢ - go with the Seagate Momentus 500GB 7200 drive, it's fast, pretty quiet (slightly more vibration than the original) and doesn't have much impact on battery life.

For example so that I can just press shift or another key to get the German character.

Some may already exist, but you will have to learn them.  On my old system these can be found through keyviewer.app  For example, if I press option+s I get ß   Umlaut is a bit cumbersome as option+u then the actual letter.  It may be possible to bind a key to do this function, possibly through System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts
I have old, old references for utilities that let you rebind keys to other functions, and you would have to see if they have modern equivalents.
Ukelele Mac OS X Keyboard Layout Editor - http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&id=ukelele - mostly useful for character, not function mapping.

How can I print from my iPad through my Mac Book Pro which is connected to a printer?  I was told I could do this when the iPad and Mac Book Pro are synched together.

    No.
Printopia (running on your Mac) connects the iPad to your printer.

  • I just upgraded my mac book pro to snow leopard, now my I photo library dissappeared

I am a novice in all things technical and I need some help figuring out my I photo library.  I bought my Mac Book Pro in 2009 and shared/transferred all information from my G5 (2004) to my laptop.  I Photo was also transferred and I have started to add more photos to this laptop.
I just upgraded my mac Book Pro to Snow Leopard and now when I open my Iphoto library it shows  some of the library but now all.  My husband said it is still there but the system is not able to look in the right place due to the sharing...so I am totaly confused?????
WHen I go to the Information it syas it is Where: /users/shared
Under sharing and permission it says: You have custom access
vivianlie read and Write (but this is in light gray)
    Everyone (also in light gray)
NOW: My old and faithful G5 all of a sudden is telling me this morning that in order to open I photo I
need to upgrade to work with this verion of I photo
Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of I photo after the upgrade.
    What should I do now?
Thanks so much for any tips and ideas...

On you MBP try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete  the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
On your G5 make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and run the same 3 fixes.

Is this thing a piece of junk?  My MacBook Air is running fine.  I've literally only charged the MacBook Pro battery a handful of times -- it's brand new.

At these prices don't screw around.  Just call applecare to arrange an appointment at the nearest apple store.

  • Upgrading 4Gb Mac Book Pro to 8Gb. Improvements?

    Hi,
I was wondering whether upgrading 4Gb Mac Book Pro to 8Gb would give me any benefits noticeable benefits. At the moment I don't even attempt certain things because the performance is so inconsistent, unreliable, laggy and slow. Plus it is terrible at multitasking.
    Main processes and apps used;
    1. Pages
    2. Football Manager (Really Slow)
    3. Spotify (Slows System down noticeably)
    4. Photoshop / inDesign
    5. Final Cut Pro
    6. Chrome
    7. Mail
    8. iTunes

From either computer, launch the MAS app, login using the AppleID and password originally used to DL Lion, then OPTION-click on the Purchases tab. That should reveal the Lion installer app. DL it and when it starts up, quit it. It resides in /Applications as Install Mac OS X Lion.app. Copy it to a safe location and run it from there. The ill-designed installer will only delete it if it resides in /Applications.

  • I have an old Mac book pro which had hundreds of photos in iphoto. recently bought a new mac book air. now my iphoto library on the old mac book is gone!!!!

I have an old Mac book pro which had hundreds of photos in iphoto. recently bought a new mac book air. now my iphoto library on the old mac book is gone!!!!

now my iphoto library on the old mac book is gone!!!!
How did you search for the iPhoto Library?
What do you mean by "is gone"?  Is the iPhoto Library missing from the Pictures folder?  Or does iPhoto launch and show and empty library, and you assume, that the library is missing?
Which version of iPhoto is installed on your old Mac?
Search with Find Any File for iPhoto Libraries -  download Find Any File here: The trial is free:
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/index.htmlhttp://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/index.php
You can search everywhere with FindAnyFile, where Spotlight will not search.
I learned this  from Old Toad , see his post here:
Re: My iPhoto Library disappeared...how do I get it back?
Download and run Find Any File to search for a file with "ThumbJPGSegment" in the file name. These are files common to all versions of  iPhoto libraries.
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. If there's a library hiding somewhere on your hard drive FAF will find it.

I can't upgrade my mac book pro retina 13inch to 10.8.2, why?

Is it strange that we have to learn about the 10.8.2 release being pulled on a support forum?  I've spent the last few minutes trying to locate the update (as instructed on my new MacBook with Retina display for the iPhoto update and to enable mail in iCloud). I gave up and went to Google and found this thread. Thanks for the info by the way, at least I know to stop looking for the update.

  • Any Trade in info to upgrade to Mac Book Pro?

I have a 1 yr old PowerBook G4 15 inch. Would like to upgrade to a Mac Book Pro 15 inch. Bought G4 thru Denver Apple Store. Are there any offers to upgrade from this to the new Intel version?

    a brody,
Thanks for the advice and link. I'd actually read the Apple notice about the "high-pitched buzzing noise," which in part prompted me to send the machine in for repairs (the Genius actually recommended a logic board replacement, but the Apple techs seemed to ignore this request, probably because of the shortage).
I like your plan, but from other users' accounts of their experience with customer relations, I'm skeptical that I'll actually be able to receive a replacement. It sounds like AppleCare and Customer Rervice are both very reluctant to do replacements for machines that have only received a single repair. Am I simply wrong about this? In any case I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try.
And just to flesh out the plan a bit... Suppose I'm talking to an AppleCare rep, and they repeatedly refuse to replace my machine. What do I need to do in order to 'escalate' the issue to customer relations? Presumably getting mad and yelling at the rep is not a good idea. Are there some magic words I can utter? Is it as simple as saying "I'd like to escalate this issue to customer relations"? As of next week my notebook will be "business critical," would telling them this help? Maybe crying?? (j/k but hey, if it works...)
Finally, is there any chance of a refund if I bought the machine in late May? I know it's WAY past the 14-day repair period, but conceivably they'd make exceptions under certain circumstances? Quite honestly the speed of the MBPRO is not worth dealing with these issues (for me, anyway), and I'd be ecstatic if I could go back to square one and get an EOL PowerBook.

  • CAN I UPGRADE MY MAC BOOK PRO WITH LATEST MAC

I brought a mac book pro in augest 2010 from apple store. Is there any possibility to upgrade my mac book with latest configuration offered by apple? My mac book pro in is very good condition as it is when i brought it. Please let me know regrading this...
    Thanking you

Apple will not normally buy back old Macs. They do offer a recycling program with the store.  Inquire at your local store.  This is a user to user forum, so no one here can answer for Apple directly, except with what we have experienced as users.

  • Memory Upgrade to Mac Book Pro 13.3" late 2011

I have Mac Book Pro 13.3" Late 2011 edition.i want to upgrade memory from 4 Gb to 16 Gb.would be possible as it says it does support only 8 Gb.

Yes, you can upgrade to 16GB - all 2011-2012 non-Retina models can be upgraded to 16GB.
Your Mac uses the same type of memory as mine - 204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMMs. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1270.
Crucial, Corsair & OWC all manufacture RAM specifically 'made for Macs'. To start, I would visit the Crucial website and use their System Scanner to show the possible upgrade paths for your machine.
Good luck - call back with any questions.

  • Upgradeing on mac book pro

i have a dual 1.8 g5 and a mac book pro, i have FCE 3.0 loaded onto my g5 and want to have FCE on my Mac book pro. Does that version have universal, do i need to load that disc onto my pro if i buy the upgraded version? can not find my disc as i have moved since buying it.

    Sorry - Universal Binary.
FCE 3.0 and earlier will work on Intels if you press "esc".
They will not work quite as fast as FCE 3.5 because they are going through Rosetta, but they should perform OK.
I haven't heard of any problems other than the slower performance.
    Ian.

  • How much does it cost to upgrade a mac book pro 2010 mid range?

I want to find how much upgrading Mac book pro mid range? Ideally a list of what can be upgraded and how much.....and i know apple can upgrade, i do not care about the cost or if it is worth it.... just want to know how much and what can be upgraded...

The performance bottleneck for your MBP is the hard drive.
You will see significant improvements in overal performance by upgrading the HD to a SSD.
Btw, Apple is not in the business of upgrading your existing MBP. Apple rather you buy a new MacBook Pro.
In all fairness to Apple, the 2011 MBP quad-core is almost twice as fast as the 2010 MBP dual-core for multi-core aware applications.
    Here are Mac benchmarks.
