HDD write speeds are suddenly slow...

Hi, I have a T540p that has a 500 GB 7200 RPM hard drive in it. Previously, it would read and write near 100 MB/sec, which is to be expected.
However, recently it will only give me 90 MB/sec sequential read speed and 40 MB/sec sequential write. My external USB 3 hard drive is giving me 175 MB/sec read and 150 MB/sec write. Why is my internal hard drive so slow?
I can't find many tips on the internet but I've tried optimizing my drives, I've ran diagnostics on the hard drive, I've ran a virus scanner, I've done all my windows updates, I've checked the drive for errors but nothing has changed.
At what point do I reinstall the OS? Will that do anything? Should I send the drive back?
Thanks for your help.

Caching shouldn't slow down the drive. It also won't register a speed on a cache-agnostic benchmark like CrystalDiskMark.
Are there no "reallocated sectors" or "current pending sectors"?
Spinning hard drives are usually not SATA III compliant because they don't need to be; they're barely exceeding SATA I limits.
One way to eliminate the hardware as a point of failure would be to run the benchmark with the drive hooked up as a secondary drive to eliminate the interference of a running system. This could also be done using a bootable Linux CD or a WinPE environment.

  • Hard drive read write speeds are too slow

I was having an issue with 17inch macbook pro. was getting 4.0mb/s read write speed tops. and smart status failure.
So i replaced the drive. The new drive is a 7200 RPM 500GB WD drive. I'm getting 12.0mb/s on top speed. Computer feels a little quicker but still slow overall.
I ran this test on a fresh install of snow leopard.
Is it just me or do those read/write speeds on the new drive still seem slow?

That does seem slow - on the other hand, what are you using to measure it?

  • After updating to 4.3 I can't connect to wi-fi because the "internet speeds are too slow". How much speed does this require?

After updating to 4.3 I can't connect to wi-fi because the "Internet speeds are too slow". So what speed does it need?

I called tech support and I got the same **** canned response, backup and reset to factory settings.  Yeah right!  Everything was fine until Verizon shoved the software update down my throat.  I finally unchecked the box in Wi-Fi settings for auto network switch.  However, I still get the "Your Internet connection is unstable" warning no matter what Wi-Fi connection I hit.
In a related story, I received a new or refurbished phone as my original SIII had AC/charging connection issues.  I called probably three times to attempt to back up my data, went into two stores in attempts to have them transfer the information over, and all were too incompetent and inept to assist me.  Only when talking to someone about this Wi-Fi issue, did someone actually know how to back up everything.  Of course by this time, I had to send the new phone back because Verizon charged me $400 before I got everything squared away.  What a colossal waste of my time!

  • Wi-Fi speeds are extremely slow with Arris modem

    Hello all,
I just "upgraded" my TWC modem to the Arris model. The hardline speed is 300 Mbps/30, and my Wi-Fi speed test using the Airport Extreme AC is 14.58/20.68. That's <10% of my hardwire speed. What gives?
    Regards,
    David

Check the speed at a LAN <--> Ethernet port on the AirPort Extreme first, before you mess with wireless. Get that up to speed, then work on wireless issues.
If speeds are still slow using the Ethernet connection, reset the AirPort Extreme back to factory default settings to clear out all the old settings,  and set it up again.
As is, the AirPort Extreme is likely not associating with the new modem correctly, since it remembers too many things about the previous modem.

  • All of a sudden only 4x and 8 x write speeds are available when building DVD

I have been using Encore successfully for several months to burn my indie film onto DVD for grant proposals . I found if I used a 1x write speed my DVDs played on most DVD players and computers.
As of yesterday all of a sudden and for no reason (I made no chances to my computer that day) the only write speeds available to choose from when building a DVD were 4x and 8X and when I burn a DVD at these speeds it does not play well enough to watch.
I rebooted my computer and even tried restored my computer to the states it was in a few days ago but nothing worked...in terms of getting back the broader choice of write speeds.
I called adobe Technical support and they said that I would need to pay for support to fix the problem...does any one know how I can fix this without having to pay adobe lots of money for tech support

    a) The drive's lifecycle counter has kicked in. If so, it would prevent non-optimal software-controlled modes and only allow burning at its native speeds to extend life expectancy.
    b) Some other tool that accessed the disc drive and reset its config data.
    c) Windows itself has for some reason initiated a new hardware detection and reset driver config.
In any case, it would seem that you will have to re-initialize manually. Remove the drive from your device manager and have Windows scan for new hardware. Do so with admin privileges. Windows should automatically re-install the required drivers, but with default settings. Also check this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060. even though Encore doesn't give any error, the case listed under 1) may apply - if the driver is not installed correctly, it would report incorrect burn speeds.

  • Help! Play store download speeds are extremely slow

Hey guys, I just got my galaxy s4 a couple of days ago and I am just encountering a new problem. When I try to download an app from the play store it takes FOREVER to download it, I'm talking 10kb/s. Does anyone know of this problem and a solution for it? Thanks a ton!

        Good morning tony12345,
Let's speed things up for you! Your Galaxy S4 is capable of much faster downloading speeds. Ensure that LTE/CDMA is selected http://vz.to/18J32hS and make sure to disable WiFi. Also confirm your coverage signal http://bit.ly/qQR9lM as low speeds are normal for areas with extended coverage.

  • Dropbox uploading/syncing speeds are extremely slow

I've noticed that when I am in Windows my Dropbox uploading speeds are relatively fast but when I am using Arch Linux it uploads at a crawl. When I initially start the program it jumps up to a fast rate and then almost immediately starts to slide down to about 20 kbs.
I looked at my Dropbox settings and I made sure nothing is throttled including the download speeds.  Does this have something to do with my specific network configuration in Arch Linux? Its definitely not my ISP since in Windows using the same connection Dropbox is really fast.

I could only find this on the internet, besides that I am out of ideas:
Preferences > Network > Bandwidth > Change Settings. Once there, change your Upload rate to "Don't limit", or if you're familiar with your network's upload bandwidth and want to exercise a little more control, pick an upload limit that you're comfortable with in the Limit to field.
Maybe it is related to your network configuration. Dropbox is working fine here.

    Hi,
There is no Report of any Outage or Downtime with any of the Azure Services.
Can you please confirm if you are still facing slow Speeds, it could also be a local network issue.
Hopefully you are not facing the issue anymore, IF you are still facing issues, I would recommend you create a support ticket if its affecting you production.

  • My BB speeds are getting slower by the day

I have been with BT Broadband for approx a year and on the whole the service has been good. But just this last few weeks I have begun to experience slower speeds than usual.
I have used the BT Speed Checker a few times, and each time I get a worse result. Today's results were the worst yet. Here they are:

Can anyone offer me some advice? I really don't want to use the BT helpline. I have used them before and find them pretty useless to be blunt.

I have tried 17070 option 2. It is quiet. However I noticed a lot of noise coming from my phone prior to dialing. Not sure if this has anything to do with my problem or not. I have two phones in the house and the other one does not make any noise.
My broadband is connected to the second socket in the house  (not sure what master and test sockets mean).
I have had a few disconnections recently, but my hub seems to be updating as it is flashing yellow when this happens, which I guess is normal.

  • Download speeds are very slow but speed test is fi...

Hi, I did a speed test which returned a result of 36mb down and 8mb up so didn't really expect a slow download. I started a download on the iplayer which normally downloads at 28-30mb per second but it didn't get above 4mb which is not good.
    Anyone experiencing slow download speeds?

Speeds have gone back up to 21mb on the iplayer. Much better but still slower than usual.
When you get used to the fast speeds of Infinity, anything slower is immediately frustrating. Like having to go back to using my Pentium 75Mhz with windows 95.......horror

  • Why is the write speed so slow to my NAS

Hi, I am trying to improve the write speed from my MBP to the NAS.  I am using the Thunderbolt ethernet adapter connected to an Airport Extreme 7.6.1 using a wired connection. I have a Synology DS213 with a wired connection to the Airport Extreme as well. I am using CAT6 cables.
In testing my performance, I noticed writing files from my MBP to the NAS was very slow; whereas my read performance was much better.  Please see the tests below to explain this further.
Using the Blackmagicdesign Disk Speed Test Utility using a 5Gb test file written to the NAS, I see the following:
Write speed is 7 to 8MB/s  This write speed is what concerns me.
    Read speed is between 60 MB/s and 75 MB/s
Using 2 finder windows (drag a file from one window(MBP) to the other(NAS)) and watch the disk activity on the Activity Monitor with a 1Gb file
When writing a file to the NAS from the MBP:
Write speed will burst to 19 to 23 MB/s but it will drop to below 10 MB/s at times.
When writing a file to the MBP from the NAS
    Write speed is: 46 to 60 MB/s
Why would the write speed from my MBP to the NAS be so slow ; whereas, the write speed from the NAS to the MBP is very fast.
Synology has 2 WB 'green' disks configured as raid 1.   I understand that part of the influence of writing from the NAS to the MBP is utilzing the advantage of writing to a SSD ; whereas, writing to the NAS it is writing to a slower drive.
Is 19 to 23 MB/s burst with dips below 10 MB/s during a copy typical?   The other thing is I dont understand why the Disk Speed Utility never records write speeds to the NAS over 10 MB/s whereas the Activity Monitor will show the bursts at times of 19 to 23 MB/s
If 7 to 8 MB/s write speeds is too slow, what can I look at to improve this?  Since writing the file in the other direction is pretty fast considering, how could the issue be a network one?

I was transferring my iPhoto library from an older MBP to a new retina and having the same issue - transfers almost immediately slowing to less than 100k/sec over my beautiful Time Warner-provided WiFi router using regular OSX folder sharing.  I couldn't find any software updates as some other similar threads suggested.
I put my iPhoto library in a .tar.gz archive and that immediately transfered at about 7mb/sec, much much faster!  So, without having diagnosed the issue, perhaps I've uncovered evidence that one or both of my machines doesn't like transferring big file trees.  I bet a zip or any other archive would do the trick.

  • S400 Ultrabook IRST decrease write speed

I just bought a Lenovo S400 Ultrabook with 500GB+24GB Sandisk U100 SSD last month. It was equiped with German system, I formated this HHD and installed a Chinese windows8 64bit, with the RAID driver.
Now the HDD test result in atto disk bench without IRST tech is ok, the read and write speed are similar and values are all close to datasheet (Even the HDD actually has C5 warning...)
    Link to image 1
also the HD tune test result is ok (sorry I only have Chinese version fit for windows8).
    Link to image 2
    after I enable the IRST:
ATTO test, write speed very slow, read speed increased.
    Link to image 3
in HD tune the test result is crazy, I can hear the HDD is working intervally:
    Link to image 4
the HD tune seccond run, should be very quick but not:

Can somone solve this problem or I should return this laptop to Amazon...Actually from some Chinese forum, the only way I heard about to solve this is change to another SSD...
    Thankx!

  • 2008 Mac Pro PCIe SSD write speeds

I plan on getting a PCIe SSD like the OWC Mercury Accelsior_E2 and seen great read speeds but the write speeds were much slower so anyone have info on this ?

there is a thread on MacRumors testing three I think different  PCIe cards and it will vary with different makes of SSD. Also putting the system SSD in RAID and/or on PCIe card often does not work reliably or have that much benefit. For data it is great.
    YMMV.
There are some benchmarks on SSD Review looking at numbers. Different uses benefit from random vs sustained. And sustained is not why you generally use an SSD to begin with.
0.1 nanosecond seeks, low latency highest I/O per sec, and having high reads are great for system use, audio.
That kind of setup is excellent for a photoshop scratch array volume, Aperture and Lightroom catalogues. Even iPhoto library.

  • Thunderbolt drive Read/Write speeds have significantly dropped

I got a new Western Digital Thunderbolt VelociRaptor drive. When I did speed tests on it using "BlackmagicDesign" Speed Test software initially (when empty) the drive was giving me read and write speeds of 350 MB/s. Now however I have 90% of the drive occupied with data and the read/write speeds have dropped significantly to 230 MB/s. Any ideas as to why and how I could improve this?
    Thanks

Anybody know how fast the read/write speeds are with a USB hard drive and the Airport Extreme Base Station?
    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Apple's AirPort base stations aren't known for fast file serving, but for most purposed they're fast enough.
I can't comment specifically on your Aperture plan, but with some software it's important to avoid simultaneous access by more than one user.
