HDMI 5.1 Audio

Just in case some users don't follow the Youview community forums, there should hopefully be a new update soon for the Youview boxes.
One update is looking to be 5.1 audio via HDMI

There are many HDMI switches out there. Any advice on which ones are best?
I cannot personally recommend one as I have no need to use one.
Read reviews for the ones in your price range.
Also, does the HDMI switch transmit audio?
It absolutely should but be sure to read the reviews and specs for the specific one you are purchasing. Like anything else, I am sure they are some junk switches out there.

You can connect the audio from your iMac to your TV using a mini jack (like headphones plug) to rca (regular red and white audio connectors used on every TV,DVD, etc) cable.
On your TV, you need to be able to set the audio for the HDMI input you will use to "analog" and connect the rca end of the cable to the analog inputs on your TV.

Dave I'm glad to say that it works perfectly but I'm embarrassed to say that my 12 year old nephew hooked it up in about 10 minutes.
If you have the Kanex Mini DisplayPort cable it will work, what confused me was changing the display settings in System Preferences,
and dragging the mac screen from the mac onto the tv. Sorry I cant be more helpful but you have the right cable now you need a 12 year old nephew.
    Good luck Derek

  • Any Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter with audio for macbook pro mid 2009

connecting MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) to Hisense TV with audio?!?!!?
    hello everyone.
if anyone is familar with successfully getting the older macbook pros that dont support audio out to stream and preform digital audio on a TV or has any helpful information that will get me familiar with trying to successfully stream audio and visual. and can PLEASE HELP ME in any way to understand what they know and teach me how to solve my problem id really appreciate it.
i want to connect my MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) to my Hisense LED LCD TV, ModelNumber:40H3E  and getting digital audio sound from my TV as well as video, but have no clue on how or where to even start to successfully pairing the two and getting sound.
I own a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) this MacBook model doesnt support an HDMI port. My MacBooks model has the Mini Displayport which supports video out but does not support audio out. Can someone help me by telling me exactly which Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter with audio will support my model MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) and exactly what HDMI wire do i need to buy that will successfully preform digital audio and sadisfying quality visual through TV?
i have NO expierence with the proccess have NO knowledge about any of this or these Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters with audio. i have no idea what kind of adapter and HDMI cord to buy that will give me sound from my tv for my type of macbook. '
im not familar AT ALL with any of this so i hope me giving you my MacBook Pros make and model and my TV's model number will be enough information for someone to help me.
just please give me anything you can on this topic
    thank you so much,

With a 2009 MacBook Pro, you need to use two connections to your TV: one for video and another one for audio.  The miniDisplayPort on the 2009 models does not support audio, so you need a separate audio cable:
miniDisplayPort adapter for video - I use the Apple miniDisplayport-DVI adapter + a DVI-HDMI cable like this one
audio cable for audio - use a 3.5mm male stereo-to-2xRCA male cable like this one
Connect the miniDisplayport adapter + DVI/HDMI cable to your MacBook Pro's miniDisplayPort output and the HDMI input on your TV
Connect the audio cable to your MacBook Pro's audio out and your TV's audio in
The only potential gotcha is if your Hisense TV requires audio via the HDMI cable when you use an HDMI cable.  The H3e user manual is unclear about this.

  • How can I play music on my macbook pro (OSX Lion) through a Pioneer receiver. I've connected them with a mini display port to HDMI cable with audio support bought at the Apple Store, but there's no sound coming through. thanks

How can I play music on my macbook pro (OSX Lion) through a Pioneer receiver? I've connected them with a mini display port to HDMI cable with audio support bought at the Apple Store, but there's no sound coming through. There are 4 HDMI-in ports on the receiver - BD, DVD, DVR/BDR and audio. In my system preferences for sound, the receiver doesn't show up as an output option. Can anyone please advise. (ps, this is my first time posting a question, so I hope I can find your answers!) thanks, JP downunder

For sound, try the audio output port and connecting to the RCA  audio input ports on your Pioneer receiver.  Use something like this:

    Ciao.

  • Dose the HDMI Cable have Audio Support or do I need to use the Optical Audio Port on the ATV?

I recently noticed that the Apple TV has an "Optical Audio" port on the back, next to the HDMI port. Before I buy one, will I need to buy a Optical Audio cable, or will the HDMI cable suply sound to the TV?

HDMI carries both audio and video. The optical port is for connecting to a receiver/external speakers.

  • Hi there, can anyone tell me how to make make Garageband ignore HDMI as an audio output-device on a 2013 Mac Mini? Now it keeps on prompting me: Do you want want to use the HDMI device (monitor without audio) for audio output? Thanks in advance, Grtz T.

    Hi there,
Can anyone tell me how to make make Garageband ignore HDMI as an audio output-device on a 2013 Mac mini i7 using an Apogee jam as an input for bass and a Behringer USB DAC with RCA audio output? Now it keeps on prompting me: Do you want want to use the HDMI device (monitor without audio) for audio output? I'm also suffering massive audio lag issues with the Apogee jam after waking the mini from sleepmode, wich pretty much renders it useless.
    Thanks in advance,
    Grtz T.

I think the easiest way to do this is to have the EyeTV app running in one user account and sent via HDMI to the TV, and use a separate user account for Screen Sharing. Both logins can be active at the same time and with Lion you can connect via screen sharing to which ever login you need.
With regards to the Mac video resolution changing, when it is not the current input on your AV receiver. This is 'normal', if the Mac sees no signal it drops down the a lower level. What you need is to buy a HDMI Detective Plus which tricks the Mac in to always seeing a signal and hence it will not drop down the resolution. See http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=8005
The Mac mini does have an IR receiver. This can be used with the EyeTV app, iTunes, and similar. Yes I believe EyeTV would run for prolonged periods quite happily, it is has been around for a long time and had most of the rough edges polished off. However one issue you will have to deal with is that it does not automatically update its program guide data. For this you might have to write or modify an AppleScript. Elgato support or their user forums will be a lot of help.
You can set EyeTV to convert recordings to an iTunes (Apple TV) compatible format and then delete them from EyeTV.
The HDMI Detective should solve your handshaking problems.

  • Mini DisplayPort to HDMI transmits no audio on 2011 iMac with Lion 10.7.2

    Hello everyone. I'm new here.
I have a 2011 iMac which was shipped with Lion and I updated to 10.7.2. I am trying to connect my iMac to my televison to play my movies, etc by using the HDMI connection. No VGA connection on this TV, which is what I used to use before upgrading computer and TV. I ordered a MDP to HDMI adapter from ebay which says it supports audio. The seller is reputable and I do not see any issues from their other customers.
I have the MDP to HDMI adapter connected to an HDMI cable connected directly to my 46" Panasonic LCD. The video transfers perfectly, but audio continues to be played from computer's internal speakers. I've read through as many posts as I can find. I see many which tell you to select HDMI in System Preferences>Audio. There is no option for HDMI here. I only see "Internal Speakers" as the output option.
I called AppleCare and even spoke with a Senior Advisor. They say I need to buy one of the two adapters they recommend in their support article. (I get the impression that they just wanted me off the phone.) Those are overpriced and I think this adapter should work, as I see other customers of this same product are satisfied.
I've tried resetting PRAM and also SMC. I've taken a look at the audio settings on my televison, all to no avail. I don't understand why HDMI would not be shown in Audio under System Preferences. Any ideas? Thanks for your help!

    Same problem.
All my equipment is directly from Apple, except two items bought December 2011, namely a 24" Sony Internet TV and a high end HDMI cable bought from Sony.
My Macbook Pro 15" with its 10.7.2 Lion and Intel Core 2 Duo let's me plug in a Moshi DP HDMI adapter via the HDMI cable to the Sony Internet TV.
By selecting the source on the Sony TV, I can get the display working. My Macbook refused to see the Sony TV until I switched to Mirror Display, but now I can switch between the two display modes fine with no problems.
But the audio does not work.
Really rather annoying, considering that there have been problems with this feature in several OS X generations now - after apparently working fine once upon a time.
Dear Apples, kindly could you tell me when you will re-introduce audio support through DP HDMI connectors?

  • MacBook 2007 black 13" would a mini-DVI to HDMI cable send audio to the TV?

I attached my macbook (2007 black 13") to my TV with a mini-DVI to VGA; would a mini-DVI to HDMI cable allow my audio to play through the TV? Wanted to ask before I purchased it. Thanks.

No. The black MacBooks don't send audio through HDMI, so you'd need to connect the audio separately.

  • Windows 8.1 HDMI output no audio

I plug the HDMI from my laptop to TV and before update to 8.1 it worked fine.  Now I get video but no audio.  HDMI does not show up as an option when I click "manage audio devices" under "sound" in the control panel.  I found the device manager and under sound I see two things, the second of which (Intel Display Audio) has an error yellow triangle thing.  I got the following informaiton:
This device cannot start. (Code 10)
    STATUS_DEVICE_POWER_FAILURE
I tried uninstalling the driver and restarted my computer, it reinstalled the driver.  But still same error.  I looked at the log of events and this thing was installed first on the day and time i did the upgrade.
I don't even know if I'm on the right track, but that's all I could dig up. HELP!

  • Connecting to HDMI TV and audio to my receiver

I'd like to connect my apple TV using an HDMI cable to my TV but I'd like the audio to come out via my Yamaha receiver and surround sound speaker system. I don't have any optical cables. Should I connect the analog audio cables from the back of the Apple TV to an unusued audio port on the receiver?

Sound thankfully is active on all outputs simultaneously, but when using HDMI the video is disabled on component.
Your problem will be that using analogue you'll only be able to send stereo/Dolby Pro Logic to the surround system - you really need optical for any proper 5.1 content.
Is it that you just don't have an optical cable or that there are no spare inputs on the Yamaha?
BTW I run HDMI to the TV and optical to my older Yamaha processor and that works fine.

  • Unable to get sound from new ATV installation using either HDMI or optical audio to Bose receiver.  Good video using HDMI.

Need help setting up my Apple TV.  I have good video, but no audio using either the HDMI cable by itself or by connecting a optical video cable through the aux receiver for home theater.  I've replaced the Apple TV box, swapped out HDMI cables, reset the Apple TV box, all to no avail.  Any suggestions?  Thanks

Connected only using HDMI to Onkyo Receiver and HDMI out to Samsung 1080p TV. So far so good.

  • Early 2013 Macbook Pro Retina HDMI video to TV but no HDMI device under audio

HDMI output to TV works fine for Video but there is no device to switch to in audio setting, the HDMI cable is tested and working and the TV can recieve audio over HDMI. if the macbook can see that a HDMI cable is plugged in to send video why does it have no option to send audio?

Solved by switching to display mirroring rather than extended screen, no idea why this affects it and only on this TV.

  • Thunderbolt to hdmi 5.1 audio problem

I seem to be I seem to be having a problem with my thunderbolt to hdmi setup.  I have macbook pro 2011-thunderbolt to hdmi-yamaha rxv571-lg tv setup. While playing a movie with the tv off my yamaha receiver shows the audio input to be 6 channel (5.1).  When I turn the tv on, the input to my receiver switches to stereo 2.0.  With my tv off i see the yamaha receiver in my midi audio setup and can correctly setup 5.1 audio.  But when i turn the tv on, the yamaha disappears and the midi shows my LG tv with 2 channel audio and my yamaha shows an input of 2.0 instead of the 5.1 it gets with the tv off.  Any help is greatly appreciated.  I want 5.1 audio with my tv on, and the audio from my yamaha.
