HDMI cable connection to MBP

Should the MBP be powered off or sleeping before plugging in the HDMI cable to connect a TV or does it matter? I notice when I plug in the cable with both TV and MBP turned on, the MBP screen will flicker for a few seconds until the display shows up on the TV. Is that normal?

It doesn't matter if the Mac is powered on or off.  The flickering when you connect to the TV is normal.  Your MBP is sensing the resolution capabilty of your TV and resetting accordingly to give you the best quality on both screens.
Note: if you are using mirror mode, the TV will be limited by the maximum resolution of your MBP's own screen.  If you are using extended desktop mode you can independently set the resolution of your MBP screen and your TV's display.

Solved this??.   does appear to be the  order in which the equipment is connected... first, HDMI cable connected to TV and computer, then switch on computer, then switch on TV.. seems to work with picture and sound coming from TV each time so far...   (Plus, on one occasion I had to check "mute" was off!!)

  • HDMI cable connected from TV to Mac, what do I click on to get the movie on my laptop screen to show on my TV screen?

HDMI cable connected from TV to Mac, what do I click on to get the movie on my laptop screen to show on my TV screen?

When you first hook it up it will probably have the display set in Extended Desktop mode. The Menu Bar and Dock will be on the MacBook display and your background screen on the TV but you can move the cursor onto the TV screen.
In System Preferences>Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen.
The TV will now have the Dock and Menu Bar and windows will open on it. But you can move the cursor to the MacBook screen and move windows from the TV over to the MacBook screen.
You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to use the MacBook’s keyboard and trackpad to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box. That will give you the same screen at the same resolution on both the MacBook and the external monitor.

  • No audio with HDMI cable connect - need optical cable?

I have just connected my AppleTV 2 with my Pioneer ELITE 910 HD Plasma TV system.  I have a hard wire ether net connected.  I have a great picture coming out of the HDMI connection from AppleTV plugged into my ELITE 910 HDMI Media Receiver.  But I am not hearing audio.  I have gone through the 'settings' menu on the AppleTV screen and have every setting correct (I believe)   It might appear that I may have to purchase an Optical Digital Audio Cable that would input into my Pioneer ELITE VSX-54TX receiver (that does have an Optical Digital Input that has not been used.)
Am I on the right track?  I was hoping the video AND audio would travel through the HDMI connection.   I don't want to spend money on the cable if I don't need it.

Re: No audio with HDMI cable connect - need optical cable?
Yes, audio and video should go via HDMI.
Do other peripherals work ok with the pioneer over HDMI.
My LG BlueRay player works fine.  My TIVO works fine -- good audio and video
AppleTV is a bit odd with audio at times.
Does the pioneer media box handle doilby digital and linear PCM?
I don't know what "linear PCM" is.  All the specs on this 2004 system are here:
    http://plasmatvbuyingguide.com/plasmatv/pioneer-pro910hd.html
If you have Dolby Digital set to Auto I'd expect you to get some audio - if set to On and media box can't decode DD then you may get no sound.
Try cycling those settings as well as the one for audoo bit depth.
Have done all this.  Still no audio

  • Qosmio F50 - Up arrow signal when HDMI cable connected

    Hello,
I've been able to connect my laptop to my LCD TV (LG LH4000) through HDMI but every 3~5 seconds it seems to receive a signal from the up arrow.
Let's say I'm browsing some files in the windows explorer and it goes up one file, just as if someone pressed the up arrow.
This only happens when its connected using HDMI. As soon as i unplug the cable, it stops doing it.
I've tried to search for similar problems, but no luck.
    Thanks for your help

    Hello
I have the same problem as you do, also i have a Qosmio F50, and when i connect it to my LG 42LD450 tv monitor i get the same problem i am running windows 7 64 bit, and now i made a reinstallation of the same OS but now it seams that i cant even get a signal to my tv, but the screen is still jumping up now and then with a few seconds of intervall...
If you found a solution i would really want to know it in the mean time i will continue to try to solve the problem.
Let you know if i find something out....

  • Loose ethernet cable connection on MBP 2.33

I have a new Macbook Pro 2.33 and the ethernet connection is loose. A lot of cables don't click in and stay. They pull out easily. Anyone else having this issue?
    MacBook Pro 2.33   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

My wife and I both have 2.33 C2D MacBook Pros purchased at the same time (last November) and we both started having this problem a couple of months ago.
I have tried about a dozen cables in each, ranging from hand-made at work to solid-cast with strain reliefs and all slip out of the MBP sockets if you tilt them slightly up or down. This is a royal pain since though the AirportExterme-N is nice, it is no gigabit to our graphics file server.
As long as I can see it is not just something I am doing wrong I will feel more confident hauling them both into the Apple Store.

  • MBPR display stays black when i try to swap from my HDMI TV back to inbuilt display - even when restarted without the HDMI cable connected

I am running OSX 10.8.2 on a month old MBP retina.
Detect display does not show up unless option key is pressed, and even then nothing happens when i click it - it seems to not recognise the inbuilt display at all. I have tried lots of combinations of sleep mode, restarts, CMD  + OPT + P + R at start up, nothing will make my macbook display show up - the backlight lights up with a black screen at start up and then goes out. Have tried turning automatic graphics switching off also. Have done lots of research and found some other people with the same/similar problems but no solutions. Any help would be greatly appreciated as my Macbook is useless unless I am at the TV in my living room.

Hi Scotties123 - did you manage to solve this? I have the same problem :(

how do I connect my new (purchased last week) macbook air to my samsung smart tv? I purchased the adapter at the apple store and connected to the TV via HDMI cable.  The TV says "no signal.  I do not see TV as an option in the display tab of system preferences.  what else do I need to do?

First, make sure your TV is tuned to display the correct input signal. Most TVs have several inputs (multiple HDMIs, cable connections, RCA etc) so double-check that you're using the correct one - HDMI1, HDMI2 or whatever is written next to the port.
I assume that you have a mini-Displayport to HDMI adaptor? If you open displays preferences, first tick the box that says "show display preferences in menu bar" then locate the menu and click Detect Displays. See if that helps.

  • Increasing brush-size crashes Win 8 - when HDMI cable is connected - Why?

Photoshop Elements. Increasing brush-size crashes Windows 8 when HDMI cable connected to TV or data projector.  I'm using Asus N56V notebook with Nvidia 635M dedicated graphics card with latest driver.
    Any ideas please?

    Hi Brian,
    Here's an update:
The nub of the problem has been determined by my computer expert as a conflict (as we suspected) between the graphics driver and screen resolution.  However the situation is far from dimple.  I'll be as brief as possible:
No matter how we approach the settings for the Nvidia driver, when using HDMI, the 'workings' of the compuer automatically reset the driver to either the inbuilt Intel driver and if that's deliberately 'disabled' it reverts to the even more basic Windows 8 driver.  As neither card/driver is 'dedicated', the sharing that occurs between the native resolution of the notebook display and the external display (even if this is set to a compatible value)  the the computer crashes.  It remains OK if a single dsipaly (internal or external) is selected.  Dual display (which I must have) is the problem.  My computer expert is going to contact Asus about this. He even tried setting the global setting to Nvidia only and it still didn;'t succeed.
I've since spoken with a colleague and he tells me that in the audio-visual community, this is a well known phenomenom with rexcent lapptops/notebooks no matter what to cost or spec - in so far as they ignor the 'dedicated graphics' when on HDMI in favour of the default (shared) driver and hence the problem. Apparently some notebooks are OK but one has to shop around and take pot luck.  What a state of affairs!
The Asus notebook works OK using the VGA socket but let's face it, I bought this hi-spec computer for HDMI usage.
This is the story to date.  It would appear that software is not the root cause.
I will continue to pursue the matter and find a resolutuion (no pun intended - or perahps it was!)
    With all best wishes,
    Clive.

  • Connecting my MBP to my non smart TV

I want to connect my MacBook Pro to my 50" Panasonic plasma TV to get Netflix content onto my big screen. The TV is older, so not WiFi, but it does have a HDMI port on the front. Can I connect a Thunderbolt to HDMI cable from the MBP to the TV and have the TV as a second monitor? If so, will the MBP automatically connect to the TV when hooked up, or are there any steps to take to make this work? I don't want to buy the cable if this isn't going to work. Thanks.

I suggest a cable such as this which eliminates the adapter:
    http://www.monoprice.com/Product?seq=1&format=2&p_id=6008&CAWELAID=1329452153&ca targetid=320013720000011105&cadevice=c&cagpspn=pla&gclid=COHU9sff57sCFaHm7AodQ2I ADg
It should work but DO read the instructions that came with your TV.
    Ciao.

  • HDMI cable - Plus Pay TV with HDMI cable. How to correct?

Today i purchased Apple tv and was told to buy a HDMI cable which i did. My problem is my tv has 1 input and that input currently has HDMI cable connected to the Austar unit (pay TV). Any ideas how to correct this please? i.e. double adapter etc.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The cheaper option is an HDMI switch, if you get one ensure you can exchange it if need be, not all will work as they should.
You might also want to consider a receiver and sound system, modern receivers tend to have multiple HDMI inputs which would solve your problem.

  • Sound dosen't work when hdmi cable is in?

when i have Hdmi type cable in for monitor sound does not come out of laptop

    Hi @NigeTay66 ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Notebook not getting sound with the HDMI cable connected. Here is a fix when speakers not working Windows from Microsoft.
    1. Right click speaker icon (lower right hand corner)
    2. Select Playback devices
    3. Right click Speakers
    4. Enable it and set as Default
    5. Click Apply/Ok
If you close the all the screens then reopen them this should adjust the settings.
I would be happy to assist if needed as there are many models of HP Notebooks. I would need the model number.
How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Please respond with which Operating System you are running:

  • No sound through HDMI cable after upgrading to Lion

After upgrading to lion I can not get any sound through my hdmi cable connected to the TV. It did work before. There is no optional source to choose under "Sound"  - only internal speakers. How can that be? Any suggestions what to do?

    You arent the only one.
I guess that is a thunderbolt bug and needs to be fixed by apple.

  • What display settings do i need to change to use hdmi cable with macbook pro

what display settings do i need to change to what tv and display my macbook pro with hdmi cable connected to computer.

Well, if it's 1080p TV, then go into System Preferences > Displays.
Sometimes you have to click on detect displays & a PreferencePane should appear on each display device for you to change the resolution.
Also decide if you want it mirrored, or extended. And also move the display to the correct position for extended so you are moving the mouse in the direction of the 2nd display being the TV.
Option + F1 = Brings Display preferences up immediately.
Command + F1 or F2 = from memory that's the shortcut to switch back & forth between mirroring & extended.
