HDMI Capture via Firewire

Are there any other options for capturing from HDMI over Firewire except for the AJA IO HD?

You want a box that will capture HDMI into it, and then firewire to the mac? There is only ONE box that does that and that is the AJA IOHD. The MXO2 and MXO2 mini capture HDMI, but they need the Express34 slot on a laptop, or PCIe connection on a tower.
For firewire, the IOHD is the only one that does HDMI HD and firewire.

hi everyone,
I have to capture some rushs shot in HDV with this camera model (very old one) via firewire.
No matter what, final cut doesn't recognize the camcorder.
I think I did all you have to do when you meet those kind of issues.
(went to easy setup 720p25, threw preferences away, check FW cable and so on...)
Can someone help me on this one please ?
I have to return the camcorder tomorrow and got to capture 5 hours before it.

Ok here's the test I made :
With a "classic DV" camcorder everything goes right in the system profiler , it recognizes the model. (rear and front ports)
With the JVC HDV camcorder system profiler says "unable to list the firewire device"
So I figure it's either the FW port on the JVC camcoder that is burnt, or maybe a firmware issue since it'a very old model.
Or simply this camcorder is not recognized by leopard.

Capturing Via Firewire & Decklink

If I am capturing footage from my camera into fcp via firewire and I choose a capture preset from my Black Magic Decklink card, am I capturing via the card? Or do I have to be plugged in directly to the card using the SDI? I realize that the card lets you capture in some ways via the firewire but does that go for all of them? (10 bit uncompressed?? etc..)

The sales guy at the Cow said that they ship to your location and have had few issues.
A downloadable version is being worked on, but a few details still need to be ironed out....technical details like ensuring single downloads only and stuff like that.

Capturing via firewire

i'm trying to capture footage via firewire from our grassvalley indigo switcher. i can change the output of the indigo to 1024x768 and i can see the footage in fcp, but it's giving lots of artifacts and the video is choppy. i tried setting the output to 1280x720 but i couldn't get the right capture preset to have it work for capturing footage in fcp. i've only got 5.0.4, do i need to upgrade or what?

HDV? try something else. DVCPROHD maybe?

Problem with image capture via firewire from sony camcorder TRV20E

I'm new to premiere pro. Have checked compat. of camcorder with PProCS3 and am told by Adobe technical team it is ok. So what am I not doing? I've followed the on-line help but still no video. It must be in the settings PLEASE can someone offer me some pointers. I've gone back to the Preferences - Device Control - options and having not found the model of the camcorder I've put the settings back to the default - but that made no difference.
I'm working on a Mac and have even tried opening the camcorder in i-movie but it doesn't pick up the connection from the camcorder. Is this an oh so simple thing I'm missing? I'm really stuck and would really appreciate some feedback. Thank you

Several folk have had issues with Capture from a myriad number of cameras. As Matthew noted, his Capture worked with a certain sequence. Others have noted different sequences, that worked for them.
Sequences to try:
1.) Plug in camera (iLink) and turn it on. Start PP and then Capture
2.) Plug in camera, but do NOT turn it on. Start PP, then Capture, then turn camera on
3.) Start PP, plug in camera, turn it on, then start Capture
4.) Start PP, plug in camera, but do NOT turn it on. Start Capture, then turn on camera
It would be great if all cameras worked exactly the same way, but it seems that they do not.
One note: if your iLink cable is a powered cable make sure that the camera is turned off, BEFORE you plug in the cable. With a powered cable, I make sure that the device is both off and its power cord is not attached. Too many fried IEEE-1394 sockets can result from having the computer on and the device on. Do not make this mistake. This is for the powered IEEE-1394 cables - the ones with the "U" shaped, large plugs. Please read this paragraph again, if you have a powered cable, or read the specs to see if you do. Most camera IEEE-1394 connections are not powered, but make sure first!
I'd even suggest that you do a search of the Premiere forums, not just CS3, and plug in "Firewire," "iLink," "cable" and read.
As for sequences that worked with certain camera models, Jim Simon posted several articles on his findings. I think that Steven Gotz did, as well.

DeckLink HD Extreme III HDMI capture

I wont to use a BlackMagic DeckLink HD Extreme III card in a MacPro using Final Cut Pro 7 to capture a HDMI signal and capture the audio from a separate XLR source. Does anyone know if this is possible please?

well you are shooting JVC's proprietary HDV variant ... if you want to capture the native MPEG-2 transport stream from the camera or deck then you need to capture via firewire. If you capture via component then the camera is decompressing the video data and sending that decompressed data down the wires to your Decklink where it is being recompressed to the target codec ... you might set the target codec to the same HDV variant that you shot but in capturing it as such you have pushed the signal through a full recompression cycle.

Capturing via component input: a question

Stupid question of the week: if I capture HDV footage via component input, will it take up more disk space than capturing via firewire? The reason I ask is because component is technically "uncompressed"... if it's HDV footage, wouldn't that suddenly take up more hard drive space?
The reason I ask: I'm getting the JVC HDV deck and it can only play back 1080i through component output. Therefore I need to know the best way to handle 1080i when I use it (my main camera shoots 720p).
Can anyone recommend an affordable, quality component input solution?

Why don't you capture the 720p HDV from the JVC deck ?
If its 720p60, it will convert onto a 1080i60 timeline reasonably well, although you will need to render it - it won't be realtime.
I think 1080i60 and 720p60 will mix quite nicely on a 1080i60 timeline.
You cannot capture the 1080i60 component to HDV 1080i60 - no deck will do an 'analogue in' for you, and to be honest there would be generation and quality issues in doing so.
The other suggestion made in this thread, about going to DVC Pro HD is also one worth investigating, but you already have everything you need to capture and create what you want (if I've understood your post correctly)

You cannot adjust it as you capture via firewire. That is a straight digital transfer. You can only adjust after you capture. Or if you had a capture card and the deck allowed for brightness to be adjusted upon output.
But via firewire...no.

Capturing HDV Into ProRes 422 (LT) Via FireWire

I read this fine tutorial on Moviola on the technique of Capturing HDV Into ProRes Via FireWire.

Since you can choose ProRes 422 (LT) as an option in the Log and Transfer window, I was wondering if there is a way to capture HDV to ProRes 422 (LT) via firewire like in the above mentioned article.
I tried creating a custom capture setting in the AV Settings, but ProRes 422 (LT) was not available as an option, only ProRes 422 and ProRes 422 (HQ). And those settings cannot be edited or duplicated (grayed out).
I don’t know why ProRes 422 (LT) is available in the Log and Transfer window but not in the AV Settings window. Maybe it will become available in an update.
In the meantime, does anyone know a way to get around this? Maybe modifying an FCP file somewhere?

HDV is recorded to tape inside of the camera as digital information. Component coming out of the camera is analog. The camera is performing the first conversion D/A, from HDV (digital) to component out (analog).
Component going into the ioHD is analog. The ioHD then converts via its hardware to Prores (any flavor), which is digital. The ioHD has to convert the analog from the component outs of my camera to digital for use in FCP. FCP only uses digital video.
You said "The IOHD internally converts to ProRes.." converts to ProRes is the second A/D conversion.
So the path is D/A/D. I count that as two conversions, camera D/A as one the ioHD A/D as two.
I don't want to unnecessarily convert from digital to analog to digital which is why I don't use the ioHD to convert from HDV to Prores (any flavor).
Unfortunately I don't have any digital outs for this camera, neither HDMI or HD SDI.
I believe capturing and converting HDV to ProRes via firewire in FCP doesn't have this D/A/D conversion which is why I'd like to be able to capture HDV to ProRes LT via firewire in FCP and stay digital all the way, with no analog conversions.
I use the ioHD for all of my analog to digital conversions. It's a great box from a great company.

Capturing DCVCPROHD25P via firewire without a card

i was wondering, if i capture dvcproHD 25p footage with a pansonic deck (pana 1400 for ex) via firewire, in a macbookpro without a capture card;, will i be capturing full blown dvcproHD or will i end up with compressed footage?

Well... all video including DVCPROHD is compressed video... but that said, what you'd capture with that deck is not FURTHER compressed... so it's as good as it can be shooting that format, which is a good one BTW.

Problems Capturing Video via FireWire

I have had problems capturing video via firewire on my MacBook Pro. It is an early 2008 model. I have tried capturing video using multiple programs, cables and cameras. In both Final Cut Express and iMovie ('08 and '09) I loose the connection mysteriously. It just stops sensing my camera mid capture. I can shut the computer down, programs down and cameras down but nothing seems to work consistently in getting it to work. The weird part is that it does work some times. Recently I tried an auto capture of a whole miniDV tape through a sony handicam via iMovie '09. It got 20mins of the tape then stopped and rewound the tape. When trying it again it read "connection error". I could not get it to work. I put the computer to sleep and came back later. It worked but only captured about 10 minutes then shut down the whole camera and import completely. I switched to manual import and it will now only let me capture about 20 seconds at a time. What is going on? To me it seems like the port itself is malfunctioning and disconnecting the signal randomly. Has anyone else experienced this? What is the cause and what can I do about it?

I've been reading the forums and it seems that there is an issue with the Firewire port in general. I have an external firewire 800 HD and when copying large files or a large number of files the HD gets dismounted unexpectedly. Your case seems similar in that we are both transferring large files via Firewire. Anyone have any fixes for this?

Capture camera won't get recognized by computer via firewire

I'm running on OS 10.7.5., the mid 2011 iMac and I have both iMovie and Adobe Premiere cs5. I'm filming with a Sony vx1000 and using a Panasonic GS80 to capture via the Firewire 800. Neither the capture camera nor the vx1000 seem to get recognition from the computer at all, in either program. I've tried both the cameras on a MacBook running on 10.8 which is Mountain Lion, and neither worked. I've been reading that it has something to do with Lion, but I just want a clear answer for myself. So has anybody had this same problem, or does anybody know how I can work around it or fix it?
This screenshot is with the camera plugged in, so I'm guessing the problem lies within the firewire port itself?
And this is the only option it gives me in iMovie. In Premiere there is nothing.

Have you tried restarting the computer, and ensuring no other apps are using the camera?
I have worked in the production industry for years and have experienced many a blown FireWire port. I'm not sure if they have fixed this issue, but I know, at least it used to be, that if you plugged in your items in the wrong order you could blow your port.

Capturing Digibeta Via FireWire

Im running FCP 4.5 on an iMac with an external LaCie hard drive.
Can i capture Digibeta footage from a J30 Deck via firewire or will i need to buy a capture card?
Would upgrading to FCP 5 make any difference?
Final product is a showreel to be output as DVD only.

Don't know the deck. Can it output or do conversion from Digibeta to DV and send it down a firewire connection?
If so, yes FCP will accept the DV via firewire.
If not, you will need an external capture box (the iMac isn't going to take a card) such as a AJA Io to bring the material into your machine. If you want to edit it in it's native format, you are going to need a very fast hard drive as well.
FWIW - The iMac is not a very good choice for uncompressed formats. It has only one firewire bus with no possiblity for adding a second one which is what you will want.

HDMI capture card for a Power PC G5

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knew if there was a card HDMI capture card that could be used in a non-intel G5?
If not, is there anyway I could use a HDMI to fire wire adapter and use the existing firewire port etc without degrading the HD signal? or capture via the ethernet port using a HDMI Ethernet extender?
Any thoughts or real world experience would be greatly appreciated.

I apologize - I thought it was the Studio card that had official G5 support, but when I re-read the specs page, it looks like it is only the HD Extreme card is the only supported card in the G5.
That being said, I was also told by BlackMagic that the Intensity wouldn't work in the G5 either (although they declined to elaborate as to why), but it does work and every driver release has been Universal. Like I said in my original post, I believe that the card is the source of some system instability, but if you're not doing capture very frequently, then you can remove the card when you're not going to be using it (which is what I do sometimes). I've only used the Intensity Pro to capture from S-video sources, but it works fine and the video output to a monitor also works as well.
I have no information for you on converting HDMI to DVI or ethernet. Might want to ask in the Final Cut forum.
