HDMI/DVI adaptor to VGA on Monitor - No Picture

Same with Thunderbolt/DVI adaptor to VGA on monitor. Is it the adaptor to DVI/VGA cord that is making the problem?
System Information sees the Monitor(Sony Bravia TV)
Display Preferences sees my dual display set up
The computer acts as if I have two screens running
But no picture on the monitor with the signal path described above

Welcome to the wonderful world of copy protection.
Your display may not be on the "approved" list, or was removed from it.
Apple's newer Mac lines include a form of digital copy protection that will prevent protected media, such as DRM-infused iTunes movies, from playing back on devices that aren't compliant with the new priority protection measures.
The Intel-developed technology is called High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) and aims to prevent copying of digital audio and video content as it travels across a variety of display connectors, even if such copying is not in violation of fair use laws.
Apple has apparently acquired a license for the technology and is now using it across its lines to to prevent transmission of purchased iTunes content to devices that don't include support for HDCP.
The problem can often be solved by using an HDMI to Component Video adapter.  Many believe that Component Video will give you a better picture than HDMI without any of the hassles of HDCP.

  • I need to connect an HDMI outlet to a VGA-only monitor.

I need to connect an HDMI outlet (on a video recorder) to a VGA-only monitor, so that I can run my new Mac mini and the recorder to the same monitor. The adaptor supplied with the Mac mini is HDMI to DVI-D and I also have a cable from the Mini DisplyPort to VGA. This works well with the Mac mini to the monitor. Can I get an adaptor or cable to connect an HDMI male to a Mac DisplyPort female?

Yes, but it for Mini DisplayPort displays, not VGA displays (even with adapters).

  • Mini HDMI-DVI disconnects when vga thunderbolt adapter is removed

What I have found is that if the vga and HDMI adapters are connected to a monitor, I can get a signal from the HDMI-DVI adapter.  But when I disconnect the vga adapter, the HDMI-DVI signal goes away too.  Anybody know what's going on here?

As other threads on this have pointed to, Monoprice sells HDMI/mini-displayport to VGA cables.

Given the minor price variations, why not get a 10'?
It's very annoying that Apple's included adapters are DVI-D not -I, otherwise I could use those DVI-I to VGA adapters that seem to litter my clients spaces....

  • DVI.I to VGA LCD monitor

    Hi Everyone
Is there anything to gain by using the DVI connection on my MSI FX5900XT graphics card
to the VGA port on a  DELL 19" LCD Monitor ?
I was just wondering as the card came with an adaptor DVI/VGA so I can use either output on the card.
At the moment I am connected VGA to VGA

Apple didn't ship a 2.4GHz MacBook until February of 2008. If that's the model you have, or an earlier model, it has a mini-DVI port which would take the mini-DVI to VGA adapter. To confirm, run System Profiler, click on the Hardware heading at the very top of the left-side list, and tell us what the Model Identifier reports.
    Regards.

  • G5 DVI to VGA Dell Monitor Connection problems, need help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    hello,
I'm running two dell monitors both of which were connected via DVI to my g5 quad dual dvi. My tv broke and I'm using one of my monitors to connect the cable boxes HDMI input to the dells DVI input, it works great.
My problem is that i still want to run two monitors from my mac and still be able to switch channel sources from the Dells source button allowing me to switch from TV to Mac. Since I took up the dvi port on one of my monitors to connect to the cable box via HDMI, I have a free DVI cable. I purchased a tiny converter that allowed to change one end of the free DVI cable to VGA. I used this method to connect the cable to my g5's dvi port and the configured end to the VGA port on the monitor with no luck.
The Dell monitor does not pick up any signal and just goes to sleep as if my computer does not exist. The TV works fine and I'm able to switch sources. Please note that I'm not using the DVI-VGA adaptor that came with my g5 and don't know if this would make a difference. If it does, how do i set this up because this adaptor is like 5 inches long.
Does the adaptors DVI end need to be connected to the back of the g5 or does the VGA end need to be connected to the monitor or does it not matter. I need a longer dvi-vga cable as well, do they make them. This all depends if the problem actually is that that I'm not using the DVI-VGA cable that came with my mac to connect to the monitor in the first place.
Can anyone help me out here. I'm using the Dell 2208WFP Ultra Sharp.

    Bad adapter?
The G5 ports are DVI-I. Any good DVI-I to VGA adapter should be fine.

  • "miniDVI-DVI adaptor" + "DVI to VGA cable" can't detect LCD TV

    Hi,
I just bought a "miniDVI-to-DVI" adapter, and then a DVI-to-VGA male-to-male cable to connect my MacBook to Viewsonic 19" monitor but my MacBook didn't detect the 19" monitor. (This 19" monitor has only VGA but no DVI input!)I tried it on my friend's 32" LCD TV but it couldn't work too.
Then I tried to connect my MacBook by using "miniDVI-DVI" adaptor + "DVI-DVI male to male" cable to DVI socket of my frind's 32" LCD TV. It worked! So I think it's not the problem of the "miniDVI-DVI" adaptor.
I worried that it's the problem of the "DVI-to-VGA" cable so I went to the shop to exchange another new "DVI-to-VGA" cable. But my MacBook still couldn't detect all these 2 monitors via VGA socket.
Can anybody help me? Please advise! Thanks!

    Hi,
    Thanks for your response.
The shopman told me that "miniDVI-VGA" adaptor was out of stock, only "miniDVI-DVI" adaptor was available yesterday. At that time I thought I had to buy a connecting cable also (no matter it's VGA-VGA or DVI-VGA cable).
Since my friend has a DVI-DVI cable, if I buy this "miniDVI-to-DVI" adapter I may share my MacBook with his 32" TV too. So I bought these adaptor & cable.

  • NB550D - VGA female to HDMI male adaptor

    Hello,
I need to connect my Toshiba netbook NB550D to a male VGA cable (this is for projection on screen).
I figured I need an VGA female to HDMI male adaptor. However, I am unable to find any.
Has anybody faced this problem before?
All I was able to find is an HDMI male to DVI female. I'm considering buying a VGA female to DVI male (not easy to find either), but it sounds a bit cumbersome.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    > Excuse my ignorance, but when I bought this computer I specifically asked this questions and the seller assured me that it was possible and that all I needed was the rigth adaptor
Well, its possible of course but there is a difference between
    - sending the signal from VGA to HDMI and
    - sending the signal from HDMI to VGA.
Its not possible to convert the analogue into digital but it should be possible to convert digital into analogue signal
So I assume you want send from HDMI to VGA. Right.
Well, this should be possible but using a HDMI to VGA like this one:

  • Mini dvi to hdmi adaptor vs. mini dvi to dvi adaptor

Do the mini dvi to hdmi adaptor works? I notice a lot of them for sell on ebay, but none at apple store. Does apple not recommend this setup? Most of the forums address the mini dvi to dvi adaptor to dvi to hdmi cable set up. I can not find anything that clearly says you can use the mini dvi to hdmi adaptor and just connect a regular hdmi cable to get video from a macbook to tv.
BTW My LG tv model 42PC3D (link to manuel below) says that the HDMI cable supports computer connection.
    http://us.lgservice.com/index_b2c.jsp

There are reports here that non Apple mini DVI-->whatever cables don't work correctly connect to a MB. That said, if the cable is cheap enough, give it a shot. I just looked at the mini DVI-->HDMI cables on eBay and they all look "short" and for most installation, will require a longer HDMI-->HDMI cable.
So, unless the price of a DVI-->HDMI cable is a lot more than an HDMI-->HDMI cable, why not go with the standard Apple mini DVI-->HDMI cable? However, if you already have the latter, I can understand why you might not want to buy the former cable.

  • Trouble connecting Macbook pro to Samsung monitor via DVI adaptor.

I just bought an Apple mini display port to dvi adaptor but no graphics are being displayed on my monitor (a samsung tv/monitor). All that is present is the background on my macbook. Any ideas on how to sort this please?

That's the extended desktop. Try Command F1 if you want to mirror.

  • My MBP Retina doesn't allow the use of two Thunderbolt to DVI adapters. It only works with one TB - VGA adapter and one TB - DVI adapter. However now the color on the VGA connected monitor is slightly different.

The monitors are Viewsonic VA2406m-LED. The Display preferences show all three monitors but one monitor always says "No Signal" if they are both connected TB -> DVI.
The Color on the VGA connected one is slighly off. It seems like I should be able to connect two DVI monitors not sure why this is stopped. Does it have something to do with the Graphics card?

The problem was with the newEgg adapter. I just went to the Apple Store and bought an Apple adapter and the monitor now displays correctly.
For future reference, in case anyone experiences this problem:
the newEgg adapter is part number 9SIA1PU0P88920, described as a Thunderbolt Mini Displayporrt Display Port DP to DVI Adapter for APPLE Macbook Pro Air and the full description says it works for macbook pro, etc.
when this adapter is used, the macbook pro recognizes the monitor, but the monitor displays nothing.
When the apple adapter (MB507Z/B Mini Display Port to DVI Adapater) is used, the monitor displays correctly.
Of course, the individual newEgg part might simply be defective, but I doubt it.  moral -- spend the extra $$ and buy the Apple adapter.

  • Connect to Dual-Link DVI-D port on monitor using DVI-D to VGA adapter -- getting no signal

I have a T400.  I am trying to connect to a dual-link DVI-D port on my LG monitor via the VGA port on my T400 laptop. I bought a DVI-D to VGA adapter, but I am getting no signal.
Do I need some other method or adapter or cable?  Monitor works fine for VGA to VGA connection.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I happened onto this thread while searching for a way to connect my T400 to my wife's 27" iMac. What I learned thus far is that Atlona makes a device (AT-DP400) that will convert dual link DVI to Mini DisplayPort. But Atlona says that one's graphic card must support 2560x1440. The T400 doesn't have a DVI out (nor does my current docking station), but it sounds like one can get a docking station that does. But that won't help if my card won't support 2560x1440. So are you saying that there is no way I will be able to use the 27" iMac as a monitor for the T400?

  • What is a 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 705 [DVI, HDMI, DVI to VGA Dongle

Hi.  I am considering buy a HP computer.  I would like to purchase a graphics card with the computer, but is a 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 705 [DVI, HDMI, DVI to VGA Dongle a video card that you can install internally?  I have another question--does the HP Pavilion 500-200t have a extra bay to install a secondary hdd?  Any help will be appreciated.  mary

    Hi,
This is a CTO machine, you have few choices for a video card:
        http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&docname=c03983802
Must select one of the following options:
Integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600 (GT2) (supported by the processor)
    GeForce GT 625 (1 GB)
    Radeon HD 8470 (1 GB)
    Radeon R5 235 (1 GB)
    Radeon R7 240 (2 GB)
And no, it only has ONE HDD bay you can remove ODD and put one moe HDD if you wish.

Concerning: VGA monitors using an Aluminum Powerbook G4 PowerPC 2004 15"-screen 1.5Ghz
The DVI (converted to VGA) video output stopped working on this computer after 9 years of service. This raises question 1:
Is there any way of fixing this? I've tried the usual: triple checked all vga cables & devices through trial & error. Bought a new DVI-VGA adapter. Reset PRAM, PMU, etc. Nothing works. Something is probably damaged, because my KVM switch was not working unless I hot-reseated the vga cable into it, leading to this DVI port, and that is pretty rough stuff.
    Question 2 (related):
This dovetails into this: Can I drive a VGA monitor with the s-video output port on this computer. It would take an s-video (male)-to-15-pin-VGA adapter. Has anyone does this? So far, I haven't even found the adapter mentioned anywhere.
    Thanks for reading this.
    el7

Thanks for the useful feedback, Knucklesmac. I agree. I must have blown something on the logic board -- because I had a faulty old KVM switch that would not switch between computers without some nasty hot-plugging/unplugging the VGA video cables. (wince!). It's like when Dizzy Dean ruined his arm because a line drive hit him in the foot and he readjusted his mechanics around the injury. I take the blame because this has been a great computer, and does not deserve any blame.
If it will help anyone else reading this thread, C2G (née Cables to Go) has some interesting ideas for still getting external video out of this computer:
    -USB-to-VGA
    http://www.cablestogo.com/product/30545
-Convert s-video or composite video signals to high resolution VGA
    http://www.cablestogo.com/product/40971
The price range is $75-$85, which doesn't make horse sense to me for such an old computer -- which has a lot of life in it anyway, because its own 15" monitor is not chopped liver.
