HDMI express34 card recommendations?

What HDMI express34 card is recommended for the pre-thunderbolt (standard DVI) MacBook Pros (generations 1 - 4)? I need it to be compliant with high def 24bit 96KHz 5.1 audio. Obviously the video should do it's thing too.

So far I've only found these:
http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/51...ress_card.html
https://www.motu.com/store_products/...kit/body.html/
Don't much like the price on the 1st one and the 2nd one looks proprietary.
So... nobody has made an inexpensive express34 HDMI card? This surprises me.
Funny. I'm actually trying to come up with options for a friend. I have a gen5 MCP so all is good for me. Mini-display to HDMI - receiver pops up as a device - full high res 5.1 surround sound and video. Easy. I say funny because at home I use a more traditional system of firewire interface/power amps & seperate video.
Most consumers use surround receivers so this question is starting to come up more.

  • HDMI capture card for my Power mac G5

I was wondering if anyone knew if there is a HDMI capture card that could be used in a non-intel G5? or capture via the ethernet port using a HDMI Ethernet extender? I would like to capture uncompress HD footage from my camera.
    My system: 1.8 GHZ DP / PCI - x / 2GB 400 / 160GB / SD / G5200 / 56k
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

No, there is not. HDMI options on capture cards didn't arrive until after MacPros were released and G5s were discontinued. The only capture cards that work on G5's do not offer HDMI inputs. The Intensity series are PCIe only...AJA Kona line with HDMI are PCIe only....Matrox MXO2 line are PCIe and Express34 only. And your G5 has PCI-X slots.
The AJA Kona 2, Kona LH, Decklink HD cards...things you can only find second hand...do not offer HDMI inputs. You are on a machine that was discontinued 4 years ago, HDMI support was not invented yet.

  • HDMI video cards

    hi all,
I bought a DVI to HDMI adapter to use on my G4 and it works like a charm. Do they make any straight forward HDMI video cards to use on older G4 Macs?

Hopefully japamac drops in, but you might look to see if something like this can be flashed with Mac Rooms & taped off to work with less that 8x AGP...

  • PC Card to Express34 card adapter

    Hello,
I am using a PC Card to Express34 card adapter with my MBP 2.4 GHz Early 2008 Model with a Verizon wireless PC 5750 card. It works fine after a reboot but every time the computer goes to sleep it no longer is recognized. The slot works fine as I can get my Sonnet Multimedia reader to work fine. Any ideas how I can maybe restart the port after it goes to sleep or any other ideas? Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The problem with these adapters is they don't provide bus power. This will mean you'll probably want a wall powered hub to attach to the PCMCIA card for any devices which need bus power, such as iPods, and other portable peripherals. This article discusses the options available:

  • Which Express34 Cards work with the latest Yosemite?

I'm running OS X 10.10.1 on a MBP 17" which I just bought 2nd hand - it all seems fine EXCEPT the Thunderbolt port doesn't seem to work - "No Hardware Found".
It is a Mid 2010 machine.
I suppose I will have to go to the apple store to fix the Thunderbolt issue (unless anyone has ideas?) but in the meantime I would like to buy an Express34 Card with a USB3 port for me to use as a stopgap. Easier said than done it seems. I've read lots of comments that generic cards don't work etc.
Can somebody tell me which product will work under this setup? Does it have to be a 'mac branded' one? If so, which?
    Thanks very much!
    Phil

First be advised that a 2010 MBP has only a minidisplay port.  It is not a Thunderbolt connection.
I have an OWC and a Sonnet Express34 cards in my 17" MBPs.  Both work with no problems.  I use it for eSata connections to my external HDDs.  Do not expect to get USB3 transmit speeds via the card.
    Ciao.

Does the TV not have multiple HDMI inputs?
    There are no "recommended" switches.

  • Express34 Card crashes Leopard

After installing Leopard, the MBPro will boot and run successfully only if I remove my eSATA II Dual Ports Express Card/34 Host from the slot. If I insert this card, the machine crashes. I have looked on the internet at Silicon Image for the latest drivers for Si3132 chipset and there is nothing new (I downloaded and tried 1.1.9 and 1.5.16 just for drill, but it doesn't change the problem. I think I was running 1.1.9 which I downloaded last December when I set it up). Now I can't access my RAID 10 array with all my Final Cut Pro capture scratch files. Is there a workaround? Pending a new Si driver, is there any info on Express34 drivers for Leopard? Thanks. Andy. Happy Holidays.

    OK. Here's what I've done.
Spent almost 2 hours with Apple Tech Support ... they had ideas but no solution.
I have done an Archive Install of Leopard from the disk (10.5). After some minor hiccups with the BSOD requiring doing the install twice, I finally got a happy complete install. I then upgraded to 10.5.1
Then I reinstalled all the applications that wouldn't run anymore. So there I was, with a happy 10.5.1 install and everything happy. I used Time Machine and backed it up to another drive (FW800).
Then I took the disk from Sonnet that comes with the new Express34 card I bought ($100) and loaded it. Rebooted (even though it doesn't prompt you to) and then inserted the card. Then spun up the first drive in the 2 drive RAID10 array.
It still crashed the MacBook Pro. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    The Sonnet product page says (footnote2 @ http://www.sonnettech.com/product/temposataexpress34.html )
some jibberish about my Western Digital Caviar RE2 drives aren't designed for RAID implementation.
Of course, they have been working just fine as a RAID 10 array under Tiger with the no name Silicon Image chipset card I had in there before (see first post in the thread).
So Monday when I call Sonnet, I already have a feeling that they are going to tell me that's what the problem. Meanwhile, all my Final Cut Pro capture scratch and a whole bunch of other stuff is on those drives. Am I screwed or what? Any ideas? After Sonnet blows me off, how do I fix this?
Buying a pair of new drives won't save me reripping hours and hours of material, not to mention the
500 bucks I have invested in those 2 drives. Talk about frustrating ... Have a nice weekend.

I have premiere pro CS6 and a blackmagic intensitiy pro HDMI capture card will I be able to capture HD TV progrsms if I have a HDCP compliant monitor?

    No.
As soon as you connect the HDMI cable from your cable box to the BM card it will be seen as non-HDCP compliant.

  • HDMI capture card for a Power PC G5

    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knew if there was a card HDMI capture card that could be used in a non-intel G5?
If not, is there anyway I could use a HDMI to fire wire adapter and use the existing firewire port etc without degrading the HD signal? or capture via the ethernet port using a HDMI Ethernet extender?
Any thoughts or real world experience would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Dame Hyndman

I apologize - I thought it was the Studio card that had official G5 support, but when I re-read the specs page, it looks like it is only the HD Extreme card is the only supported card in the G5.
That being said, I was also told by BlackMagic that the Intensity wouldn't work in the G5 either (although they declined to elaborate as to why), but it does work and every driver release has been Universal. Like I said in my original post, I believe that the card is the source of some system instability, but if you're not doing capture very frequently, then you can remove the card when you're not going to be using it (which is what I do sometimes). I've only used the Intensity Pro to capture from S-video sources, but it works fine and the video output to a monitor also works as well.
I have no information for you on converting HDMI to DVI or ethernet. Might want to ask in the Final Cut forum.

    Hi-
I think you will find there are more users of the ATI Radeon 9800 that DON'T have a 300w PSU, than those that do. It would leave out the majority of the G4 line if it were absolutely necessary. As I see it, it isn't absolutely necessary, and, it is also the ONLY higher end upgrade graphics card commercially produced for 2x, 4x AGP systems, most of which, DON'T have a 300w PSU.
My Sawtooth has a 237w PSU, and the 9800, and my processor upgrade, and 2 internal drives, all work just fine!
As for the piggyback connection, that is how you connect the power to the 9800. A splitter molex cable is used to split power from the superdrive connection, between the superdrive and the 9800.

  • Need graphics card recommendation

So I've just ordered a new model MBP 15" Retina, upgrading the 2.0 ghz i7 quadcore to 2.3, and doubling the RAM to 16 gb.  This includes the 256 gb flash HD, and the new default config Intel Iris Pro graphics card (no NVIDIA graphics card).  FWIW, I'll be plugged into my thunderbolt display (already own) for video editing.
The new MBP is of course a hefty hit to my pocketbook.  Yet, I'm still torn by the notion that for $250 (I get the educational discount) I could go ahead and add the NVIDIA 750 2 gb card, not to mention doubling my HD (mainly to future-proof it - I only use about 122 gb right now).
Is it worth it or is Iris Pro good enough for FCPX, and presumably some Motion 5, Compressor etc?
I haven't edited in years, but I have just returned from Nepal, where I shot several hours of HD footage that I'm going to be editing together with stills for a doc.  I'm a writer-filmmaker, so if it comes out as I hope it will, this will be a professional sample and festival submission.  I have no clue how much use of Motion or After Effects I'll need to use - in fact I have no clue how to use these, but presumably I'll figure it out.  Some of the footage has issues, it was all shot run and gun, so it could be I'll use that stuff a lot.
Do I need the NVIDIA 750 card or can I rest easy with just Iris Pro?
Thanks so much for advice either way!!
    Andrew

I have a 2TB backup drive and a 6TB RAID network storage.  I load new video directly onto the backup drive to save hard drive space on the iMac, then copy it to the RAID for safekeeping.  I can wipe it from the backup when I'm done with it, and still have two copies on the network RAID.  I consider this to be the minimum for HD.
I ended up with about five hours of AVCHD footage that I had to sort through to pick out the little morsels I needed, along with some .MOV files from a DSLR.  I'm not sure how much space it took up when I converted the AVCHD into .MOV files, but I started out with about 650GB available (after clearing it off) and now I have about 150 GB.  That includes what FCPX generated as I edited.  I don't want to go below that 150GB level, as the processing performance drops.  I keep the .MOV files on the main hard drive because that's the quickest access.  I keep a sharp eye on the capacity.
Fortunately I did well enough on this project that it got me a lot more work.  Unfortunately, if I decide to pursue it more seriously I know I'll have to get a better system.  I'm already looking at the new Mac Pro with at least 32 Gs of RAM, the biggest internal hard drive available, and a massive Thunderbolt RAID.  With the deadlines I've run into, it's the only way I'll be able to get things done without staying up until 4 a.m. waiting for stuff to transfer (I got this iMac just before they started coming out with Thunderbolt, darn it).  If I had to choose, I'd get more hard drive storage versus more RAM.  In my experience, 16GB does OK, but then I haven't  had to render anything longer than ten minutes in HD.
If you use Time Machine for back-up onto the 1TB external drive, you're probably going to have to get an additional drive.  I would recommend one to two TB depending on how big your final files are.  If you decide to RAID that second external drive-- highly recommended-- then you'd need to get double that.  Get a Thunderbolt splitter so you can run both of them at the same time.  If you need to convert the RAW files, keep those on the second drive.
Very best of luck, and send us a link to the piece when you are done.  -JB

  • Graphics card recommendations

Hi, I have an HP Pavilion Slimline s5120y on Windows 7 64-bit with default specs and I cannot seem to find the right graphics card for playing newer games like Civ 5. I assume it is the nVidia GeForce 6150se that is causing it to lag a lot, even on minimum settings in the options. It if helps, here is all the specifications on my computer:

I had tried another card today (GeForce 8500GT, didn't fit -_-), but being the unsavvy person I am at this, I need help getting the games to go faster, please.
    Thank you.

    JB, welcome to the forum.
The truth is, Slimline models are not meant to be upgraded.  The small cases don't allow for good airflow.  Newer mid-level video cards develop more heat than can be vented in the case.  Can it be done, yes.  Would I do it, no.  A video card that would handle the games that you mention would require more wattage than the 220W power supply unit (PSU) can handle.  I know this is not what you wanted to hear, but I don't like to recommend upgrades for these computers.
