HDMI lead worthwhile?

I am about to take delivery of a new LCD TV, purchased with HD(Freeview) in mind when it comes online here in April.
I have a Black Vision box, which has an HDMI connection. Will there be anything gained at all by connecting the box via HDMI to the TV? Is there some kind of ' upscaling' which will improve SD to be shown at HD resolution or will this only work with eg a Blu Ray or DVD player?
Thanks

100% get it conneced with HDMI.
Buy cheap though don't be conned by a fancy price.
It is hard to be honest to tell the difference between a programme filmed in HD like Corrie upscaled via HDMI and watching it on the actual HD channel.

I've got a MacBook Pro 15' running 10.6.6. I want to use an external monitor for my graphic design work using Adobe software and thought I'd try an HD TV. I ran a Mini Display to HDMI lead to the TV but the picture quality was disappointing. I also tried a Mini Display to VGA lead and that wasn't much better. I tried all variations of resolutions in System prefs - Displays but nothing helped. Am I getting something wrong? Thanks all.

In addition to pixel density, you are up against the translation driver card in the TV.
If you read the fine print of computer-resolution-capability in the TV user guide, you will see a chart as tall as the manual page.  At the top is the smallest resolution capable, at the bottom is the full use of the 1080p in the TV.
Mac falls into the top 25% of the page, maxing out at 1366x768 often.  This is because the TV control card is expected to do too much of the work, but is not designed for computer-monitor processing.
I looked at the resolution charts on 2 TVs before deciding to buy a 1080p LCD monitor that has a TV interface/connector.  Computer monitor first, TV second.  But the thing is only 27 in.  Good thing TV is not as important to me as it is to others.

  • HDMI lead - computer to TV set

I've signed up for the BT infinity package which (as we all know) is limited to one TV set.  A friend has suggested that I could link my computer to the TV set via a HDMI cable and watch   . . . .  watch what?  I would be able to see the contents of my computer screen on my TV set but how would I be able to watch TV programmes via the computer, via the HDMI lead?

As a BT Broadband customer you would be entitled to free access to BT Sport from the internet. Windows 8 has an included app which streams lots of channels but I haven't bothered to check how many of them are available free to air direct to a telly.

I have tried the basics turn everything off and on again close all apps disconnect and reconnect leads..... any help would be brilliant

The problem is not solved by something that simple unfortunately ! I have discovered that if I boot up the laptop with the hdmi cable connected to the tv it works, but if not, same issue. Have read everything everywhere I can to see if the issue happens for anyone else, seems mine is an odd one. May reinstall FF to see if that cures.

  • No sound when HDMI lead plugged in

Hi just a quick question which is driving me mad. When i plug the hdmi lead into the tv I still get sound through the laptop but not through the tv. Can anyone help with this small problem Thanks Bob

Do you have a case on? if so have you tried connecting the headphones without a case?
do the head phones work when connected to other devices?
Have you tried un plugging and plugging the headphones in a couple of times?
With the headphones unplugged and you change the volume, dose it display "ringer" or "headphones"?  What about when the headphones are plugged in?

  • Connecting MacBook to Sony Bravia via DVI-HDMI!

Hi I am having major issues with my Macbook connecting to my Sony Bravia KDL-32V4000 I now have 2 different DVI-HDMI leads as well as the Apple Mini-DVI-DVI and still have absolutely no luck.
The Macbook is picking up the Television absolutely no bother at all but there is just nothing at all coming up on the Television its self it doesn't even recognise that I have the computer in the HDMI slot nothing at all just blank!
Any help would be greatly appreciated as it will save me buying more and more cables if this fails to work will have to go with the DVI-VGA I guess would rather fix this though!
    Thanks!

I bought a mini-DVI to HDMI and an HDMI to HDMI cable. Once I went into settings for the display, I found that the TV was acting as a second monitor and that it was off to the right of the macbooks own screen. Thus if i moved the mouse to the right it could control the second monitor. You are able to move the screens so that they have the same data on each or use them as two screen with different info on each. Each screen is clearly visible in Spaces and it works a treat.
It is also possible to use the TV as the only screen. The way to do this is to connect up and close the lid on the mac. Once the light on the front starts blinking you can wake it up by using your mighty mouse or external keyboard. once awake, assuming you have chosen the correct HDMI connection from the TV the TV will act as the only monitor at full resolution.
The problem I have, is that I have not been able to get the sound to work. I have used the earphone socket and connected that to external speakers as I cannot seem to get the analogue signal on the TV on anything but an AV channel (not an HDMI channel). Thus the sound works on one channel and the image on another. My TV is a Sony KDL40w5710 - thus if anyone know the solution to getting the sound running through an HDMI channel on my TV it would be appreciated if you could contribute.
    Cheers

  • Mini Display- HDMI to a Samsung TV  (mode not supported)

    HI!
I have a weird problem connecting my 2010 Macbook Pro to a 2010 Samsung LCD TV using a minidisplay-hdmi adaptor. This used to work, and now it doesn't. The TV reports that the mode is not supported. I have tried every single resolution with no success, I have checked with alternate adaptors, alternate HDMI leads and alternate HDMI ports on the TV. All of this troubleshooting was unsuccessful.
From what I can see on the web there appear to be long running problems connecting to Samsung TVs, does anyone have a solution?
    Thanks

  • I just bought apple tv and would like to set it up for my family for christmas.  i have a samsung tv and yamaha receiver.  where do i plug in  hdmi?  i assume into receiver but not sure.  also, plug is on back of receiver so much get behind all equipment

i just bought apple tv and would like to set it up so it works right away.  i have samsung tv and yamaha receiver.  do i plug hdmi into receiver?  i assume plugs are in back of machined so i have to get behind all electronic equipment?  does that make sense?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your receiver is connected to your TV by HDMI and has a spare HDMI input port, then yes plug the HDMI cable from the Apple TV into your receiver.
If that's not possible the HDMI lead from the Apple TV can go straight to the TV and you can connect the receiver to the Apple TV with an optical audio cable.

  • How do I get HDMI connection to television to work with Pavilion x2 Windows 8.1

I tried to get my tablet/laptop to display on my televison by connecting them with a HDMI lead. I adjusted the TV to HDMI input but nothing showed on it. Can anyone advise.

I have exactly this same question. When I started with this pc new-out of the box and windows 8 - everything worked. Somewhere along the way probably with windows updates, it stopped working.

  • OS X 10.8.5 mac mini hdmi audio output issue

I am running a 2012 Mac Mini with OS X 10.8.5 and my Mac is set for audio and video output via HDMI to my AV receiver / TV. I have recently noticed that HDMI audio output ceases to function once the computer goes to sleep. A full computer restart is required to resolve the issue which is an inconvenience to say the least.
Or is anyone aware of a simple fix?
All my software is up to date, the HDMI lead and connection works fine for video and audio works fine after a restart so it must surely be a software error. Worked fine until the latest OS X update...
    Grateful for any help!

  • No Picture (HDMI)

Hi all. Ive just got a new Pc about a week ago now. DVI to HDMI and DVI to RGB works but when i put HDMI to HDMI in no picture comes on.
When i use the HDMI to HDMI lead in the graphic card to the TV nothing comes on the TV when i switched the PC on for the 1st time. I tried sevral times with the HDMI to HDMI lead and tried different ports on the TV and still did not work. The HDMI lead i used i also use for my old PC and still use it for my PS3 and works fine. I then used a DVI to HDMI lead what i had and it worked with no problems and the picture came on with sound also. Since using the DVI to HDMI lead i have tried using the HDMI to HDMI and there is sound but no picture still and tried another HDMI to HDMI lead but still does not work apart from the sound. Any help would be grateful
     Thanks for any reply.

Try to select from your tv , PC as the input device.
Try to look in the menu of your tv , there should be an option ...
sometimes if you don't set pc as the input , hdmi doesn't work properly.

  • HDMI pass-through no picture

I wonder if anyone could please help. I have just bought AppleTV and am trying to use it with my old Samsung DLP (with no HDMI but DVI) and a Denon AVR 789 (witch has HDMI pass-through) . When I connect the AppleTV through the receiver (using a HDMI lead to HDMI, them HDMI to DVI) I get no picture. When I go directly from the AppleTV to the TV using HDMI to DVI it works fine. I have tried changing the cables and also when I connect my FIOS TV box through the receiver it works fine. Also my AppleTV software is up to date Could this be something to do with HDCP ?
I would be grateful of any help

    Yes it could be HDCP.
Generally, I would look at the source device (tv) as the root of the problem in that it doesn't handle HDCP hopping properly, however the tv works with other receivers so I have to have my doubts about where blame lies for these problems.
You could try powering up the devices in a different order, say from the delivery end first.
It could be however that you simply don't have the receiver set correctly and need to match up the inputs and outputs.

  • Connection to TV via Thunderbolt and HDMI lost - no signal

Hi, I used to connect my Macbook Pro to my Samsung TV using a Thunderbolt adaptor and HDMI lead. This worked well for several months. I can't think of anything I changed, however the TV no longer detects a signal.
    I am running OS X 10.8.4.
The message from the TV is "No Signal. Check connected device's power, cable connection, and source selection".
Initially, when I plug in the thunderbolt adaptor to the Macbook (which is connected to the HDMI and TV), the Macbook screen goes blue for a couple of seconds and the "display mirroring" icon appears, but the TV give the No signal message.
I would be grateful for help. I feel that this must be a software issue.
    Many thanks
    Mark.
