HDMI over 50'

Alright I've read the technical limitations of HDMI and "quality" cables over regular plain Jane ones.
I have to run an HDMI over 60'. While I know this is within HDMI specs, professionals say that HDMI range on regular cables are usually equal to expensive ones UP TO 50'.
Anyone have any experience over the 50' on regular vs expensive?
Wondering if I should just convert to Ethernet and back or just run an HDMI cable

I have bought 100 foot HDMI cables from that other site to not be named and have had 0 issues with them. I never tried pushing 3d across it but for basic HDMI usage it worked.
We use them to feed TV's we place outdoors for a few bbq's in the summer.

  • HDMI over IPv6

Can HDMI be routed over IP/IPv6, or dare I say it, transported over HTTP? Since HDMI is a digital protocol, this must be possible.
Is there any known work in progress to get HDMI to be routed over IP/IPv6, or even to get it to be transported over HTTP?
Do these CE hardware folks even know about the Internet? And why can't they fit PC video cards with real HDMI connectors that can carry HD audio as well? All PC video cards I've seen have S-Video out, or a DVI-HDMI connector, and neither can carry audio.
With a high-bandwidth Layer 2 technology such as 10Gbps Ethernet or InfiniBand that offers even more bandwidth, the commodity potential of HDMI over IPv6 would be enormous. It can drive a substantial segment of any nation's economy.
    Thanks.

Well, the reason Apple TV doesn't work well with HDMI switches is probably because Apple is not doing HDMI right. And the fact that Apple TV does not process HD Audio codecs such as DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD supports this theory.
When Apple provides support for those HD audio codecs in Apple TV, you would get HDMI right.

  • How to deactivate 3rd Display (TV using HDMI over Thunderbolt) on my iMac without unplugging the miniDVI-HDMI Adapter evry time?

    Hi guys,
I have a question to the following setup.
I have an new iMac connected to a VGA Display and a HDMI Sharp TV (over Thunderbolt adapters)
I wanna know if there is a way to deactivate the HDMI tv (3rd Display) for example by an Apple Script?
The reason for this is that my DVB-C tv signal loses quality and you see a lot of artifacts when I plug in this TV to my iMac.
The easiest way would be to simply deactivate and activate this screen by a Apple Script button on my Desktop instead of unplugging the Adapter everytime.
    Hope you can help me!

Yes, I realized it didn't list the Mac Pro, but nothing in my local Apple store does - the Genius said this is the one they give new 2010 Mac Pro owners, and packaging was created prior to the release of new Mac Pros and 5770s.
I have headphones plugged into the front panel, but I do already have one of the stereo 1/8" to phono cables and this is a reasonable option, although another cable running to the TV doesn't thrill me due to the layout of my home office. But thanks for the suggestion - I may well end up doing this.

  • [HELIX] Black screen with HDMI over keyboard dock

Hi everyone, I just came across a weird issue with my Helix: When I connect my Helix including keyboard dock via HDMI to my TV the screen stays black. I checked following things: - Sound is working over TV - Screen connection is detected by Helix and also by TV (otherwise screen would be blue) - HDMI connection is working if I directly connect the tablet with the same adapter to the TV - RGB adapter is working fine also inclunding the dock I have the current driver and BIOS updates installed. Does anyone encounter the same issue or knows how to solve it? Might be either a driver or HW issue with the dock I suspect. Thanks for any input on this! Markus

If I do not use the Win-P or Ctrl-F7 key combination to change it to Duplicate Screen, then it may go automatically to "Second Screen only" which seems to be occurring in your situation.
If the setting wont change after the screen goes blank, then it could b a driver issue.  If you opted the latest device driver like I did, and this still happens, I'd say it is a driver issue. However, when I made a presentation to day, it automatically switch to the proper "Duplicate setting" screen option. So perhaps yours is an intermittent problem.
Go to control Panel, Power Options, then Click on Windows Mobility Center at the bottom of the page. You will displays and toggles for External displays and for presenter mode right there. Click those to see if you get any changes. You can see if your computer thinks a second screen is attached or not, and it you are in projection mode or not.
Does the computer go back to normal after disengaging the HDMI? If so, set it to duplicate screens and then re-connect it, if the screen goes dark there must be another setting that is off.
If you are using the WiDi software that might also be the culprit, check those settings. Hope this helps in some way.
I discovered on mine that I could run a Powerpoint presentation fine, but when I try to switch over into presenting a movie clip or website, it would only show my screen saver. I still needed to use the Win-P or Cntrl-F7 key toggle to send the signal for those applications. Just seems weird, it just an idiosyncrasy I gather.

  • HDMI over the LAN CAT6 for Mac Mini

    The Mac Mini setup:
Living room: Mac Mini as a media player wired to Panasonic 3D plasma.
    Bed room: Apple Display
How could I use one Mac Mini as a player/computer in the living room, AND bedroom?
Should I pass a HDMI cable from the living room to the bedroom, (under the parquet), and connect a HDMI splitter with the Mac Mini (one HDMI to Panasonic plasma and one HDMI to the Apple Display)?
The length of the HDMI cable would have to be 15m
Is this the only possibility? I won't need to use different content @ the same time in both rooms.
The problem would be that when I will be in the bedroom in front of the Apple Display, the wireless keyboard and the Magic Mouse, will have to pass the signal trough a wall to the Mac Mini that will be in the living room, next to the TV.
I have a CAT6 network, 2 sockets in the living room, (behind the TV), and 1 socket in the bedroom. It's possible to use the network with HDMI signal with one sender, and one receiver, but both will need two CAT 6 sockets in each room. I have only 1 in the bedroom.
There are any other options available that I don't know about?

If I could ask another question regarding this... is 30 Hz poor even for desktop work? Or movies.
I believe the 30Hz is progressive and therefore for movies/video would normally look quite good. However for sports e.g. soccer which has a fast moving object i.e. the ball it would be less good. I have also seen comments suggesting that for computer use it is also less desirable particularly when you are scrolling as this entails affectively the entire screen image 'moving fast'.
This is not based on personal use as I cannot afford a 4K screen yet myself. However for DVDs 24p is considered a to give a good image for movies and this I can confirm from personal experience so 30p should be even better. Obviously 60p is better still but for that you need either a Mac Pro, iMac or MacBook Pro Retina.
It is probably going to depend on what you will be using it for. Perhaps you should consider spending a little more for a MacBook Pro Retina which can do 60 Hz.

  • Lion 10.8.5 - HDMI over mini dvi issue

since updating my conputer from 10.8.4 to 10.8.5 - my notebook does no longer detect my sony tv or my new computer screen (work fine with VGA cable) did an update with 10.8.5 combo - same problem - cables are working fine on others computers - i do not have a backup with .4 on it so that not even an option to do a restore - pleaese help this is relly anoyinng - it apple beconming like microsoft?

    Hi Jaws1431,
I am in the same situation as yours. I ordered a Mini-DVI to HDMI (cheap) adapter to connect my two MacBook to a HDTV.
The first MacBook, under Mountain Lion 10.8.5, isn't working even with all the tips around the net. I haven't tried it under 10.8.4 however.
The other one, under Snow Leopard 10.6.8, is fully working.
Since I want to use the first one with a TV, I'm in trouble.
    Two things to do :
    - Try with a genuine adapter (if you're in the same situation as mine, aka cheap $3 adapter);
    - Try updating to Mavericks (haven't done it myself yet), or go back to Snow Leopard.
I'll let you know when I applied any of those solutions.

  • Extending the Presentation in (DVI-I/HDMI) over CatX

I am needing to extend the HDMI/DVI-I ports of the presentation in ports.  Ideally, I would love to use CatX cable to do this, with an extender system (HDBaseT, or other), but I've found that some of these systems cause the codec to sense an input when there is not a computer present.  I realize RapidRun is a possible solution, but I would prefer to use an exact length of cable instead of having unused length I have to deal with.  Do you have any suggestions for systems that use CatX cable that do not cause the codec to sense an input?  I'd say maximum length is 100'.
    Thanks!
    Chris

Doing a search online, I did find this, it's in reference to being used with the Precision 60 cameras, but it might be some help.
    extending-the-precision60-and-speakertrack60-cameras
If you're worried about the codec automatically displaying content that isn't there, but the codec thinks there is, you could choose to change the presentation selection to manual, instead of automatic or onconnect.  With manual, it would require someone to share the content, instead of relying on the codec to do it for them automatically.  See PresentationSelection in the SX80 Admin Guide on pg 115.

  • Sound over DVI- HDMI

So, until yesterday, I actually believed that this was not possible, but I updated BootCamp to 4.0 and I noticed that when I was using my external display with a MDP -> DVI -> HDMI, there was sound and video coming through it.
My question is, how do I send audio and video using the same combination using Mac OS X Lion ?  Apparantly it only works in Windows.
    Thanks!

    And from Wikipedia:
"Features specific to HDMI, such as remote-control, audio transport, xvYCC, and deep-color, are not usable in devices that only support DVI signalling. However, many devices can output HDMI over a DVI output (examples: ATI 3000-series and NVIDIA GTX 200-series video cards),[7] and some multimedia displays accept HDMI (including audio) over a DVI input. Exact capabilities vary from product to product."

  • Can someone shed some light on my HDMI woes?

    Hello all,
I'm running a brand new MacBook Pro Retina 15" with OS X 10.9.4.
I went ahead and bought an HDMI to VGA adapter from Amazon (cheap, Chinese model. No branding.) and when I connected it to the HDMI port on my MBP I got... nothing.  Absolutely nothing.
Now, before you start shouting at me "you should get a Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort to VGA/DVI/HDMI/Whatever adapter," I already own that.  I have a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter and I have a MDP to HDMI/DisplayPort/DVI (all-in-one) adapter.  That's not the point.  The point is I wanted to, without a bulky adapter, go directly from my MacBook along a sleek, thin cable (bought an active "RedMere" cable) straight to an older VGA flatscreen monitor.  The cheap HDMI-VGA adapter I got from Amazon is about the size of a USB dongle and doesn't look unsightly in this type of configuration.
So, before I gave up, I did some tests.  I grabbed my old laptop (HP running Ubuntu) and plugged it all in.  It worked!  Almost instantly.  That made me wonder.  I grabbed the MDP all-in-one adapter I was telling you about and plugged it into my MacBook, plugged in the HDMI cable and... it worked!  But that recreates the same problem as before.  Now I have a big, bulky adapter hanging off the side of my laptop.
What can I infer from this?  I also read other forum posts about other HDMI-VGA adapters and I found someone mention that the Cable Matters active adapter, with USB power, works with a MacBook Pro.  I think it's a power issue!  So that leaves me wondering: Why did Apple decide not to send power over the HDMI port?
My friend and I tried to use his MacBook Pro with an HDMI-over-ethernet extender (we had a LONG run to a projector) and we experienced problems, but once again my old HP had none.  Why is the HDMI so weak in the MacBook Pro compared to ANY OTHER LAPTOP ON THE MARKET?
    These are my questions.

Hey man, good to see you here, yes you are right "The" problem is now in the hands of Apple's engineering dept and we have been back and forth communicating about details.
I just thought I started this one asking specifically about this rom version to see if anyone had any knowledge of this particular one since I can't find any reference to it on the apple site.
    Thanks.

  • How do i configure an srw224p IGMP settings for an HMDI over IP pair?

Hi, I have a minimal understanding of IGMP but am told I need to configure it properly when putting an HDMI over IP transceivers on my network. We have two SRW224P switches with 2 Gbit ports each, connected via fiber through fiber GBICs, one slot on each (ports 25). The other gigabit ports (ports 26) we have plugged in an HDMI transmitter and receiver pair.
IGMP is enabled on both switches, but in just a default configuration. We are experiencing problems with network and VOIP phones on these switches when the transceivers are connected. Wavering sound quality and intermittent network failures across the board.
How do I isolate the multicast packet broadcasting obviously causing the trouble from the transceivers? i.e.: how do I isolate the port 26 traffic from the rest of the network. I'm told I need to use IGMP which I know little about.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • HDMI does not come back after disconnect

    Hello Archers,
this one is bugging me for a while now, perhaps someone has an idea.
I have a headless ARCH home server that mainly has the following purposes:
    1. being a 24/7 file/backup/ssh server for family and friends
    2. being an MPD server connected to my music system
The setup may seem a bit exotic. The computer is connected to the music system via HDMI over an S/PDIF audio extractor to the music system. This is because the machine replaced a RaspberryPi that really had crappy analog audio output and my music system has an optical input and can perform the digital to analog conversion itself. I have not installed Pulse just alsa and jack2-dbus.
    aplay -l shows the following:
    **** Liste der Hardware-Geräte (PLAYBACK) ****
Karte 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], Gerät 0: ALC887-VD Analog [ALC887-VD Analog]
    Sub-Geräte: 1/1
    Sub-Gerät #0: subdevice #0
Karte 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], Gerät 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
    Sub-Geräte: 0/1
    Sub-Gerät #0: subdevice #0
    The Problem:
Whenever I switch off the music system and later switch it back on, the HDMI-connection is lost and does not get reestablished. I tried various things but essentially only a reboot of the machine helps (which opposes purpose 1 of the machine). On the RaspberryPi I did not have that problem, probably due to the hdmi_force_hotplug=1 in /boot/config.txt.
    My Observations so far:
The first problem that made the sound disappear was the screen blanker on the console after 10 minutes. This can be prevented with
setterm --term linux --blank 0 >/dev/tty1 # You need write permission on /dev/tty1 for this to work!
There are no appearant error or warning messages when using e.g. aplay or speaker-test, just no sound at all
There are tipps in the forums/the internet sugesting to disable power management on the display involving xset and xrandr. However, I have no X running and the tools complain that they cannot find/open the display
In /proc/asound/PCH/codec#2 I find the HDMI codec to show the following as long as it is connected after a reboot:

I figured that the problem is probably related to powermanagement, so I experimented with powertop. This resulted in a reduced consumption of 1W when idle, which is nice but did not solve the original problem...
    The Questions
Is there a way to completely reinit the HDMI subsystem just like on a reboot?
Is there an option comparable to hdmi_force_hotplug=1 on the pi that forces the HDMI signal to stay up?
    Thank You for Your time!
    Best regards,
    Lars

I can confirm what zofiel said. I have tested it by connecting a TV and HDMI reactivitated by switching from X to console. However, this option only works one time and requires X running in the first place, which I usually have not on a headless server, but it made me think: Obviousely the X server needs to activate the graphics in the first place. Then I came up with an idea for a really messy work around. I could try to remotely start X. Normally, this is not possible and you get:
    % startx
/usr/lib/xorg-server/Xorg.wrap: Only console users are allowed to run the X server
    xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused
    xinit: server error
You can force it to work:
    sudo startx
You get lots of error messages, but HDMI audio is back, even if one kills the X process afterwards with Ctrl+C (Audio stops, but resumes two seconds later). The downside is that starting X with sudo messes up permissions with the x related files in your home directory and you will have problems to use startx afterwards, so it is probably better to use su instead of sudo. If root does not have a properly configured .xinitrc file then one can also just execute the desktop environment directly e.g., for XFCE:
    su - root -c "startxfce4"
Then kill it with Ctrl+C and you should have HDMI Audio working.
So now I could pack this in a script followed by some command to kill it, but, well, it is an ugly workaround
Is there really no better way?

  • Mini Displayport - DVI - HDMI 5V?

I kind of have an odd setup desire for an external display. I want to send video and audio to my entertainment unit from my MBP across the room. I already have audio sorted out (mini optical -> 30ft optical cable), but the video is a bit more difficult.
What I would like to do is have the Mini Displayport from my MBP go into my Mini DP -> DVI adapter (http://bit.ly/do7McJ). From there, a DVI to HDMI cable would take me to a HDMI over CAT5e/6 wall plate (http://bit.ly/C0bJg). This extender would then go to the TV.
The problem here is that the HDMI over Cat5e/6 extender needs the HDMI's 5V power source. Now, I have followed the pins all the way from HDMI (http://bit.ly/P2wWx - Pin 18) to DVI (http://bit.ly/TNJv5 - Pin 14?) to Mini Displayport (http://bit.ly/BCpof - Possibly pin 20)
Now I guess my real question is does anyone know if this will pass through 5V power: Mini DP -> DVI -> HDMI?
    Thanx in advance.
EDIT: My other option would be this (http://amzn.to/gV9PKH), however it is much more expensive and the single Cat5e/6 cable would probably reduce quality.
    Message was edited by: austinhab

@Lambstechie - Now that I read into it, if the signal is converted, it can pass over 1 cat6 cable. What I was referring to is a cheaper converter, where an HDMI channel is connected straight to a Cat5/6 channel. And since HDMI 1.3 can work 100% perfect on 16 channels (just no ethernet, audio return, etc.) it seems like 16 channels over two 8-channel Cat5e/6 cables seems fit.
Also, I did not specify this earlier, but the total HDMI (not Cat5e/6) running distance will be under 10 feet, probably around 6 feet. Now when you say the loss of signal strength will happen around 15 ft of HDMI, does that include the distance running Cat5e/6 (approx. 30 ft), or just the HDMI length (6 ft).
@Eww - I see where you are coming from, and I did not see the price of those cables until now. That seems like a great deal. Thank you.

  • Mini Displayport HDMI 5V?

Does anyone happen to know if this cable (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=102&cp_id=10246&cs_id=1024603&pid=5995&seq=1&format=6) will send 5V over the 5V pin at the HDMI end? I am not sure if the Mini Displayport is capable of this or not. According to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mini_DisplayPort), pin 20 of the Mini Displayport carries some sort of electric charge, however I do not know if this is 5V or not, or if it will transfer to HDMI over the monoprice cable.
    Thanks in advance!
EDIT: David K over at Monoprice customer service has just told me that it will work, however if anyone has experienced this first hand, it would be great.

Thank you.

  • Lenght of hdmi cable from computer to TV

Have Hdmi on my HP and on my TV.  Need to run about 59 ft from the computer to the TV.  Have read that is too long for a good signal.
    Want to show pictures.
    Advice???

While a high-quality (read expensive) HDMI cable of sufficient length for your application should work, you may encounter video signal degradation that may render the image unrecognizable. Alternatively, you could use an HDMI over Cat5e/Cat6 Extender, such as THESE.
