HDMI through DVI-out?

Hi!
Just wondering if the msi 945gt is able to connect to my Panasonic AE900E through HDMI via the DVI contact on the mainboard? I've tried an Aopen board that wasn't successful with this, I suspect it had to with HDCP not being enabled on this board. How will the MSI work with this?

Cable box hdmi to dvi out using 23" ACD possible to bypass hdcp?

i got a 23" apple cinema, and when i use a hdmi adapter to plug my monitor into the back of my hd cable box, it says the display isn't hdcp compatible, i must disconnect to continue watching tv.
any way to get around this yet? no need to wait for hd-dvd for this to suck, the time is now.

For anyone interested or having a similar problem, a little bit of research has led me down this "logic path." The cable I bought explicitly states on the back of the packaging that it is designed for connecting a DVI output device to a HDMI input device. I on the other hand am attempting to connect a HDMI output (ATV) to an DVI input (Plasma TV). Could this be suggesting that not all HDMI/DVI cables are bidirectional?... just a thought.

T400 DVI Out through Mini Dock

The T400 has no DVI output plug. However with my old A31p which likewise has no DVI-out, I can get DVI from it through its docking station. Is it the same for the T400? When docked to the ThinkPad Advanced Mini Dock, will I be able to get DVI from it?

Unfortunately, according to the Specifications posted at

the T500 has DisplayPort but the T400 does not. So no digital video output from the T400 unless through docking station.
I would strongly prefer the brighter WXGA+ LED-backlit screen which is only available on the T400 (T500 only has WXGA), AND the DisplayPort that is only available on the T500.
It seems you can't get both the higer resolution LED and the digital output on the same Txxx series notebook.

USB Dock 3.0 Audio through DVI-HDMI cable?

Hey there!
I currently own the yoga 2 pro and I am looking for a suitable dock. One thing that prevented me from ordering the usb 3.0 dock was that I am not sure whether with a DVI to HDMI cable I am able to get audio from my laptop to a TV.
For better understanding: Laptop -> USB 3.0 -> USB 3.0 Dock -> DVI -> HDMI -> TV
I asked my local retailer and they said it isn't possible but I am not sure whether they tested my method. They said I'll be needing a seperate audio jack cable -.- ugly... with my old 460 GTX I was able to transmit sound with the same DVI/HDMI cable
Can anyone who owns the USB 3.0 dock confirm that audio through DVI-HDMI cable to a TV is working / not working?

How do I connect Monitor without HDMI (but DVI-D) to laptop with micro-HDMI?

I have a Samsung NP900x400D-A02US laptop... the video connections are:
- a micro-HDMI
- a "monitor port" (which the manual says supports 15 pin D-Sub interface.. or you can connect VGA adapter),
I would like to buy the Dell Ultrasharp u2412M which has 1900x1200 resolution.... BUT it does not have an HDMI port. It has:
- a display port
- VGA input
- DVI-D with HDCP Input
- USB ports (but I don't think it's the kind that will allow me to hook up thge monitor to the laptop with USB)
How the heck do I connect the 2 of these... in a way that retains the 1900x1200 resolution? if I can't find a good way I might have to find another monitor with HDMI....

I ended up finding it by item #, because I would have missed it, too. I wasn't sure if the product image was correct until I saw this:

You got it figured out. Hooks up exactly like you said. HDMI and DVI will result in same picture quality, but as you mentioned, HDMI doesn't carry audio. They are the same, for all intents and purposes, in all other regards.
The DVI cable should have thumbscrews on each end, to help secure it at each end. The Adapter I linked has 'receptors' for the thumb screws, so the connection will be secure. The monitor should have the same 'receptors' for thumb screws. The weakest point of the connection, physically, will be the Micro-HDMI, so just be careful to not put pressure on that connection.

How do i connect my mac mini to a kvm switch using the hdmi to dvi adapter?

I want to connect my Mac Mini using the HDMI to DVI adapter to a KVM switch cable. I have an Iogear KVM switch. The cable from the KVM switch has a male VGA end connection. I have been trying to determine the right adapter to connect the female DVI connection to the male VGA connector. I will be using the Mac mini and a PC running through the KVM switch. This is doable as the iogear switch is compatible with both a PC and a Mac. Any ideas out there? Thank you.

You would need to get HDMI or DVI to VGA CONVERTER, not a simple adopter. The converter requires USP connection for power. HDMI is only digital while VGA is analogue.

No signal apple tv3 to projector via hdmi to Dvi-d

I have a 3rd gen Apple TV. Works great on my 1080p tv, with optical out to my surround amp. When I connect to my Panasonic pt-ae500 720p projector via hdmi to dvi-d I get no signal at all. The projector is HDCP compliant and I can connect my ps3 to it at 720p no problem.
I have tried changing the edid settings on the projector, and changing resolutions on atv.
Any suggestions? I really need to set up my home cinema incorporating ATV

It's an inherent problem between the ATV 2 & 3 and certain older models of TV / Projectors. Something to do with negotiating the signal between the two devices, the ATV falls over.
I also have this issue. I dug out my old PT-AE500 only to find that my ATV 2 was getting stuck on the Apple logo. No solution yet though, unfortunately.

There are a couple of ideas there, one of which was to switch the ATV on *before* plugging in the HDMI cable, let it boot up (give it 2 mins or so) then plug in the cable. This solved it for one person on that thread, but I can't get it to work here! I'll give it another try.
It's only the Apple Tv that has this issue as well. My MBP, Mac mini, etc, work perfectly. Just inconvenient having to lug them to the projector each time we want to watch a movie

HDMI to DVI adapter not allowing full resolution when using Mac OS but does with Windows 8.1

I have a Mac Mini and using the HDMI to DVI cable that came with the computer the maximum resolution it will allow is 1280 x 1024. I have 2 of the same monitors. The other is connected with DisplayPort to VGA adapater and displays full resolution (1920 x 1080) on both monitors but the HDMI to DIV will only show 1280 x 1024. I thought maybe it was my DVI cable or the adapter but when I boot up in Windows 8.1 through bootcamp both monitors display at full 1920 x 1080 resolution. Why does Windows give me the option for full resolution on both but the Mac OS doesn't? All the latest updates have been installed. I've contacted support and all the things they had me do didnt work. I see all these posts with people complaining about the same resolution issues. Is it that difficult for this to work?

Humm... the dual Samsung 21.5" monitor setup on my 2010 Mac Mini running Mavericks works a expected.One is on the HDMI to DVI adapter and the other in on a Kanex Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter.
Try > Display Menu from the Mac App Store and see if you can select 1920 x 1080 for both monitors using it.
Addtitionally, are you sure that it the HDMI to DVI monitor that is not getting the correct resolution...? Most people are complaining that it is a VGA connected monitor that is not getting the correct resolution.
If it turns out to be VGA connected monitor, then try using a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter and DVI cable for that monitor instead of VGA.

HDMI to DVI No Signal Detected

I have a late 2006 MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.6. I recently purchased an LG LED-LCD television as well as a HDMI to DVI adaptor cable, both from Amazon (the cable is an Amazon Basics cable). When plugged in to both the laptop and the television, there is no signal detected by the television and no display detected by the laptop. I've tried each of the three HDMI ports on the television, but to no avail. I returned the cable and exchanged it for an identical one, but the problem persists.
In searching through the forums, I've seen that quite a few people have had issues with this same setup, and I'm wondering if somehow I need more than just the cable to connect to my television (which doesn't make sense, but could still be the case). I've run a diagnostic on my laptop during startup, and found no issues with the hardware, so I'm 99% positive that I don't have a bum DVI port. At this point I'm just not sure what to do to get this to work, so any assistance would be wonderful.

The VGA test proves nothing about the DVI output. The DVI ports on these Macbook Pros is a combo DVI and analog VGA port (DVI-A). The DVI-VGA adapter does nothing more than connect the VGA to VGA, and does not convert the DVI to VGA. You have to use an actual DVI device to test the DVI. The 4 pins and large blade on the end of the DVI connector are the VGA pins - they can be omitted on a DVI-HDMI adapter with no harm.
I really don't know if there could be a problem with the software on the Mac and/or TV, and the cable just fine.
Perhaps try to seek out someone who has a working DVI-HDMI cable to try? Or try a store that will demonstrate that it works and has a money back guarantee?

MBP freeze DVI out to a monitor

When I first got my 13inch 2010 MacBook Pro about two months ago, I connected it with an external monitor via MiniDisplayport to DVI cable. And since then I had experienced random freeze, the screen would suddenly turn to light green or some other color, keyboard and everything else stopped working, and I had no choice but to reboot. However in the last 10 days I removed the connection to the external monitor and so far I have not experienced any problem. I think I have isolated the freeze issue. Does anyone know what's going on here?? Is it possible for me to reestablish the connection without experiencing any crash in the future? thx

I have the same problem. When no external monitor/TV is used, no issues ever. When using HDMI-DVI and using HDMI as sound output, freezes every 15-45 mins. When using just video, no audio, freezes every 30-90 mins.
When I called apple support, they said no known issues. I ran the low level Apple hardware diagnostics (ASD 3S138) OS and EFI, and my mac passed every single test. (DVI port is not listed on the diagnostic)
Everything is up to date, and my MBP is was purchased in August (3 months old).
My buddy has a MBP 13" from a year ago, before they added the capability to output sound through DVI-HDMI, and he has never had an issue.
This seems to be a hardware issue, and only seems to be happening on the 13" MBP with the new DVI out that allows sound that was released mid 2010.

Why is the resolution of the Belkin 12' HDMI to DVI-D Cable so low?

I purchased this cable in light of a new monitor I bought from LG. Why can't I get it to support 1920x1080? I am coming out of my computer through DVI and on an older monitor I was able to acheive 1920x1200 throught DVI to DVI. Now that I am going DVI to HDMI, shouldn't I be able to get at least 1920x1080 on my secondary display? Also, the secondary display refuses to mount a wallpaper. Very strange.

What resolutions DO you have available for the external display?
If you have an external keyboard and mouse, put the MBP into clamshell mode and see whether the external screen (which will then be the primary display) is willing to operate at 1920 x 1080:

DV playback quality DVI out to TV vs. DVD to TV

I've exported from Final Cut Express, using Quictime Movie, unchecking the make self contained box a 1:15 min. movie.
As I've played back that movie from quicktime 7 Pro and Quicktime X, no surprise, the DV movie does not look so good on my MB Pro screen, or on my attached monitor. But, when I connect DVI out to HDMI in on a vizio HDTV the quality is only so so. I have not deinterlaced in any steps in my process.
I then went ahead and burned the movie with iDVD. The DVD playing to the same TV from the connected DVD player looks terrific.
What am I missing to have best quality Quicktime movie file for playback on a TV from a connected media server?

This actually makes since to me. If you're trying to play a movie that is 480 wide on a 1080 screen then you are blowing it up over 2x so the quality will suffer greatly. The reason it looks better from a DVD is most DVD players uprez, or upsample the video playback. SD directly from your computer to an HDTV likely won't look as good. You might try playing it through a device like a cable box or sat tuner that allows uprez.
However, here's the positive side, you can play back HD 1080 movies directly through your HDMI cable without the need for a Blueray player and get stunning quality HD. In short, use a DVD player for SD movies, and the DVI>HDMI cable for HD stuff.

Static using HDMI to DVI adapter on 2011 mini

I bought my first Mac last week, the i5 2.3ghz mini. I originally set it up on my TV (using HDMI), downloaded/installed the updates, and messed around a bit before deciding that a 42 inch display isn't as convenient as I thought it would be.
Using the HDMI to DVI adapter that came with the mini I hooked it up to my 19 inch acer monitor. While booting can see the boot screen, but the display is very staticy. Once it logged in I was able to barely see well enough past the static to mess around with the display settings thinking that maybe the mini was trying to push an unsupported resolution to my monitor (because I set it up on my TV at 1080p).
I read up on the issue and it seems that some have had problems with static while waking up from sleep. Mine has static all the time.
By a stroke of luck I happened to have a HDMI to DVI cable on hand. I tried it out and it displayed beautifully. No static, works as I expected.
So the problem seems to be the adapter that came with the mini, the DVI cable that I was originally using (the cable works with my PC), or the HDMI port on the mini itself not working well with Apple's own adapter (not likely).
I was just wondering if anybody else has had this issue, and if they fixed it did it end up being the adapter or did replacing the DVI cable with a higher quality cable do the trick.

I just posted a similar issue here. The weird thing is that on my system, a Dell monitor works with the HDMI-DVI adapter but the Acer monitor doesn't. Do you think getting another adapter would resolve it fo rme? What kind worked for you?

Mini DVI out questions

I've been thinking of hooking my Macbook up to my 52" 720p HDTV. But most of the mini-DVI adapters I've been looking at are only S-video or compsite (RCA) out.
Has anyone used this and can let me know how this works? I'm mostly watching TV shows that I have downloaded from iTunes, burn to CD and watch them in my DVD player. But I would like to save myself the disc trouble and connect the Macbook directly to the TV.
Also, how do normal programs or surfing the web look on a TV using these adapters?
I'm not intersted in using the AppleTv.

From problems noted on other postings here, you should stick with the Apple mini DVI cable.
Then, assuming you are going to go the HDMI route, you will need a DVI-->HDMI cable. I would recommend getting a 6' cable unless you need more length. You will need a separate audio cable with either HDMI or DVI since the mini DVI cable does NOT carry sound.
