HDMI to DVI - will it provide the audio?

I have a TV with the DVI input, so I ordered the HDMI to DVI cable. Will the audio play thru the TV?

DVI doesn't carry audio, a DVI and digital audio converter may do the trick if your tv has a suitable audio input which will allow playback at the same time as DVI, which I doubt and even then you likely would run into problems with protected content.

When I'm watching a video the video portion will slow down several times while the audio is fine. I usually have to pause the video until it catches up to the audio to continue to watch it. I ran task manager in Win XP and noticed that when this problem occurs, Firefox is running at 98-100% of CPU usage. What might be causing this issue and how can I resolve it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
To Enable SafeMode
*You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
*''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.
Close and restart Firefox after each change via "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: "Firefox > Quit Firefox"; Linux: "Firefox/File > Quit")

• When will Apple have the audio driver problems repaired?

Cannot find Audio Devices !!!!!!?????
No Cuebase ???? No Presonus hardware interface !!!
Now that all new macs ship with OSX Lion when Will Apple solve the problem I would have thought the engineers would have seen this coming and thought this through.
I had to downgrade back to Snow Leopard!! The whole incedent cost me valuable time and money
I loved the Lion interface but c'mon guys ...!!! did you hire a bunch of laid off microsoft windows Vista programmers or something?
I can't believe you all made such an obvious mistake "not making OSX Lion backwards compatible with Snow leopard proven third party drivers"
I did not expct this from Apple ..What a disapointment ......

It's up to Samsung to do that, not Apple. You need to ask them.

Are you aware of difficulties that seem to be rife when connecting for example Dell monitors to mbp?
Typically people often say that they don't get maximum resolution. What can I do to avoid that, or is it a problem of the past? I don't want to buy an Apple display as I want to be able to turn the screen vertically.

Not sure whether for instance you initially had a Yahoo optimised version of Firefox, and have now overwritten it with an official Mozilla version. Although the Mozilla version should NOT add unwanted features, but the Yahoo version may well do.

• Since upgrade when I am in Google Finance and look at stock quote, and hit to see chart for say six months, it now opens a blank web page. this did not happen before the most recent upgrade? How fix? Explorer will still provide the chart.

Just go to google finance and get a stock quote on any stock and then the price comes up and you can choose to see the price history of different time periods, 1, 5, day one week, one month, etc. In the past when you hit the button for one of the charts, it would just change the chart on the same page, now it opens a new page that is blank?

• How do I connect Monitor without HDMI (but DVI-D) to laptop with micro-HDMI?

I have a Samsung NP900x400D-A02US laptop... the video connections are:
- a micro-HDMI
- a "monitor port" (which the manual says supports 15 pin D-Sub interface.. or you can connect VGA adapter),
I would like to buy the Dell Ultrasharp u2412M which has 1900x1200 resolution.... BUT it does not have an HDMI port. It has:
- a display port
- VGA input
- DVI-D with HDCP Input
- USB ports (but I don't think it's the kind that will allow me to hook up thge monitor to the laptop with USB)
How the heck do I connect the 2 of these... in a way that retains the 1900x1200 resolution? if I can't find a good way I might have to find another monitor with HDMI....
Thanks so much for your help! It's a bit frustrating to sort through it all....
Kathryn

I ended up finding it by item #, because I would have missed it, too. I wasn't sure if the product image was correct until I saw this:
Connector on First End: 1 x HDMI (Micro Type D) Male Digital Audio/Video
You got it figured out. Hooks up exactly like you said. HDMI and DVI will result in same picture quality, but as you mentioned, HDMI doesn't carry audio. They are the same, for all intents and purposes, in all other regards.
The DVI cable should have thumbscrews on each end, to help secure it at each end. The Adapter I linked has 'receptors' for the thumb screws, so the connection will be secure. The monitor should have the same 'receptors' for thumb screws. The weakest point of the connection, physically, will be the Micro-HDMI, so just be careful to not put pressure on that connection.

just the audio, eh?. If you were using DVI or DisplayPort that might be different, but for audio alone, it shouldn't be that hard. Just grab a 3.5 mm stereo plug to 2 rca cables adapter. Plug the smaller end into the back of your Mac Pro (or the Front), where you see either the headphone or speaker icon). Alt-click on the speaker icon at the top of your screen to show all audio inputs and outputs. Make sure it's set to Line Out. Plug the red and white end into the audio in jacks on the back of your tv and set it to the correct input. I don't know if your tv will allow just the audio to play. Usually one has to connect up something else, but hopefully I'm wrong. If you were using DVI, or DisplayPort, you'd need an active DVI--HDMI adapter or a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, but
I don't know for sure

• Does Mac Mini's HDMI-to-DVI cable support analog DVI monitors?

The Apple website shows that the new (late 2012) Mac Mini comes with an HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable in the box :-)
The DVI video connector standard supports both analog and digital video signal modes, but not all models support both modes.
I have an old PC monitor with a DVI connector, which is probably analog only. Will this work with the new (late 2012) Mac Mini?
In other words: does Apple's HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable support all DVI monitors, or only those with a digital input?
Many thanks!
- Martin

Your right about the DVI standard support both analogue and digital. The three types are
DVI-A (analogue only)
DVI-D (digital only)
DVI-I (supports both)
In this case the HDMI to DVI adaptor will only support digital DVI. This is because the HDMI port only supports digital.
Generally monitors with a DVI port support digital DVI, if you compare the socket and pins layout on the monitor to the one on the Mac adaptor if they are the same layout then that should indicate the monitor indeed supports digital DVI.
Note: The maximum resolution supported by the Macs HDMI port is 1920x1200, if your monitor supports a higher resolution then you should get a Mini Displayport to DVI adaptor or if needed a Mini Displayport to Dual Link DVI adaptor (for the highest resolutions).

• HDMI to DVI-D

Hi,
I'm trying to connect an external HP 2510i (WD005AA) monitor to my M6-K125DX HP Envy notebook. I'm using an HDMI to DVI adapter cable but the monitor says it does not receive a signal. The display shows no image en after a while, the monitor goes to the standby mode.
First i returned the cable to the supplier, but the new cable they send us gave the some results. According the specifications of the monitor it is equipped with a DVI-D input.
Do i need a special cable or adapter to connect this monitor?
Could this be cause by single-link or dual-link capabilities of the laptop or monitor?
Hope you can help me out.

• 2011 Mac Mini and Acer x222w monitor incompatible? HDMI to DVI adapter issue

I am totally bummed because I just bought a new Mac Mini thinking I'd be able to use the display from my old system, an Acer x222w, which has both DVI-D and VGA connections. I hooked the monitor up using the HDMI to DVI adapter included in the box with the Mini. On boot, I could see the Apple logo, though it was not centered, and when the set up screen came up to the select language screen, it flashed quickly and then turned to snow.
I was on the phone with Apple support for over an hour trying to troubleshoot this issue. I was a little disappointed that tech support didn't even seem to be aware that the Mini came with an HDMI to DVI adapter. It was then recommended that I try an adapter for the mini display port, which the 2011 Mini doesn't have.
I was able to borrow another monitor, a Dell with DVI-D, and it worked.
I have searched for specs/requirements that might explain why the Acer monitor doesn't work while the Dell one does. I cannot find anything from Apple. I just assumed any DVI connection would work. Has anybody else encountered this problem? Most of the issues I've found on the forums involve trying to hook up to a home theater LCD TV, which I'm not trying to do. If I had known my monitor wouldn't work, I probably would have just saved up for an iMac.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts or tips!

• No HDMI or MiniDP-to-VGA output, but HDMI-to-DVI is okay

I purchased my Mac Mini almost a week ago and I've been having strange issues with getting my various monitors to work with it.
I don't own any Thunderbolt or native MiniDisplayPort monitors, however I do have a number of VGA monitors, as well as some HP LP2475w monitors which have VGA, DVI (DVI-D and DVI-A), HDMI, and DisplayPort inputs.
When I have OS X installed on my Mac Mini, the Apple MiniDP-to-VGA adapter works with my VGA monitors, but only when OS X has loaded. My monitors all say "no signal" during the boot-up phase. However I had no problems when I connect my LP2475w monitors to the Mac Mini via the HDMI-to-DVI adapter: I see the grey screen during bootup, can see/access the boot menu, and everything works fine.
Today I purchased a HDMI cable to connect the Mac Mini to my LP2475w monitors to see if that would work. Well, it does work... almost, sometimes, but not most of the time.
When I use a direct HDMI connection my LP2475w says there's no signal, unless I plug the cable in during the text-mode portion of Windows' bootloader (under Boot Camp). As soon as Windows loads, or during the grey-screen bootup section my monitors all say there's no signal. There is nothing wrong with the cable or my monitors.
Here's a table:
Connection
Can see boot screen/boot menu
Can see OS X (when loaded)
Can see Windows (when loaded)
HDMI from Mac Mini to LP2475w
No
Not tested
No
HDMI-to-DVI from Mac Mini to LP2475w
Yes
Yes
Yes
MiniDP-to-VGA from Mac Mini to VGA monitor
No
Yes
No
So what's going on here then?
Has anyone else had the same problems as me?

SOLVED - I purchased a third-party MiniDP to DVI adapter instead and it works a treat.
Quite what the difference can be to a supposedly passive adapter I'm unsure - but glad it's fixed anyhow.

• After Upgrading to 10.1, all clips have lost the audio component. Is there any way to get this back?

I have recently updated Final Cut Pro to 10.1, after this upgrade (as well as an upgrade to Maverick) non of the video clips in ANY event or project have any sound component. I have a backup of the project and event files before the upgrade, but I have no idea how I can get the clips back and if I do how I can update the numerous projects I have that no longer have sound. Has anyone else had this problem, if so were you able to fix this? Or am I just doing something wrong?
The clips have no wave form when I look at them so it's almost like they have been stripped of sound. If I goto the event browser and say reveal in finder, I am taken to Original Media, but these are tiny files that can't be played in VLC - they almost look like shortcuts or dynamic links or something...
Can anyone help me get the adio back on these or should I revert back to a previous time machine backup and not update to 10.1?
Thanks
Richard

Not sure what made the files lose the audio, but the solution for my issue was:
In Final Cut, right click on a clip in the event viewer, Reveal in Finder
Close Final Cut Pro
Export orginal clips from Aperture.
Copy exports into folder that the original meda was in, replace all
Open up Final Cut Pro
Load project again, it will start analysing the audio...
Job done
