HDMI to older Hi-def TV

My older Mitsubishi 55" HD (1080i) TV doesn't have HDMI. It does have many other ports, including firewire, s-video, Component. Can I purchase a cable to convert the HDMI to one that my TV has. I also have a Comcast Cable box and noticed that IT has HDMI. Can I hook the Apple TV into the HDMI port on the Cable box and then watch Apple TV on my TV?

I suspect your cable box HDMI is for output only, so that is unlikely to help you.
There are no cables to convert from HDMI directly to those other ports that you mentioned. If you had DVI, there is a simple and cheap convertor for that since they use the same basic underlying signal, but DVI does not carry audio whereas HDMI does (but the ATV has an optical output you could use in that case).
However, since you didn't list DVI, you're likely looking at buying a converter which can sometimes get rather expensive. The issue is you're converting from an all-digital signal (HDMI) to an analog signal, and that requires a fair bit of signal processing and cannot be done passively via a simple adapter. The converters are essentially small, special-purpose computers in this case.
You may want to search the forums here as others have provided links to various converters. Otherwise perhaps just search around on Amazon. There's a number of options, but be prepared to see some large numbers on the price tags.
Someone more knowledgable may chime in here as well, but another thing to worry about is HDCP (a content protection scheme that is supposed to keep people from copying content). I'm unsure of how that works when using an HDMI converter and if the signal is lost or passed through. AppleTV requires support of HDCP to play protected content (Netflix, iTunes, etc), so if those signals are simply passed through to the TV, your TV would ultimately need to support HDCP as well.

Is this a known issue?  Thanks all.

I wanted to reply that I just discovered that my Lenovo AIO no longer likes my converter.  I'm not sure why as I have proven that it works by using it on another device.  The other device is a laptop running Windows 7 Pro.
On a haunch, I plugged in my HDMI TV which has a native HDMI connection and it WORKED.  So, I suppose I'm back to the drawing board and this is indeed not a Lenovo hardware issue.
Does anyone know of any issues with using a HDMI to VGA converter on a Lenovo B540 AIO?  Link below:

  • Older HD tvs and HDMI

I have a 2 year old JVC HD TV and the HDMI port doesn't seem to work with with any of my apple products. Called JVC and they don't cop to anything. They say they have never tried to hook-up any Apple stuff yet. I have noticed some other info of similar problems the older HDMI ports with home entertainment systems. Right now I am using component cables and plan to try HDMI to DVI to VGA port on JVC. Is there any other way to use HDMI with older HD TVs? The JVC is seeing something there on HDMI but seems to be having a resolution issue that prevents video. I will have to check to see if audio is working today, for some reason I think it is. Am I loosing any HD quality with my component or DVI to VGA work around ?

JVC may be passing the buck here. HDMI is HDMI regardless of who's equipment you are using, v 1.3 is backwards compatible with earlier versions. The only question you need to consider is whether the HDMI on your tv has HDCP, virtually all do but not all. If JVC haven't added HDCP support to HDMI then I'm afraid it won't work.
Unfortunately, your alternative suggestions are even less likely to work since DVI quite regularly has no HDCP support.
I'd confirm with JVC whether your HDMI connection has HDCP support and if so I'd be asking them to fix things, although that may be a little difficult after 2 years. I'd also ask them about DVI and HDCP, I suppose there is is the chance that they made both HDMI and DVI HDCP compliant and that you simply have a broken HDMI card.

  • Is garage band included on 10.6 OS and hdmi display issues?

Imac, 17 inch display, 2.0 GHz, 1GB ram two issues.  Can I connect an hdmi second display (hidef tv) through the thunderbolt port and does garage band come with OS 10.6.  Can't find garage band anyplace and the second display when plugged in to an aftermarket thunderbolt to hdmi adapter sees the hdmi display but won't mirror.  I have a clean install of 10.6 and can't get past these two issues. Any help please.

Here's the issue.  I can only get 3 meg d/l speed and that drops to as low as .5 meg at times.  I can link my MacBook Pro to an hdmi hi def 1080 thru a Devi connector and all works fine.  I run Netflix and the MacBook buffers the content so if the speed lags the show doesn't stop.  I came across this iMac and was hoping to do the same thing.  I bought an Apple TV 2 nd gen and it just stops and stalls due to no buffering.  So that's not working.  If I can connect the iMac to the larger Vizio with hdmi inputs, 1080 hi def I would allow the iMac to run my Netflix and not ruin here MacBook by letting it run continuously.  I used the MacBook on a smaller 14" and the 26" Vizio with no problems.  The iMac won't see either one though in sys prefs it does show the display but won't mirror.  If you, for some reason, just cannot answer the question, just let me know, I appreciate all your help.  I am at a loss but feel certain there is a way to do this.

  • Onboard HDMI is Disabled on NF980-G65

New Build.  OS is WinXP SP3.  Mobo is NF980-G65 with onboard HD audio.  HD audio is Realtek chipset with HDMI out.  Processor is Phenom II X3.  Installed and configured, two GeForce 8800GT cards in SLI mode (working beautifully).  Would like to send audio via HDMI to older Sony 5.1 surround amplifier.  Have tried latest audio drivers from MSI, NVidia and Realtek.  Device Manager shows two HD Audio devices.  One is NVidia, the other Realtek.
The Bios is 1.4 and has HDMI enabled rather than SPDIF.  With any of these drivers, the HDMI output is either grayed out or the slider is missing, indicating that the HDMI port is disabled.
Would appreciate any advice on how to enable the HDMI output.  Thanks.

I was assuming since you have a VGA card you were connecting video out to it via DVI/HDMI adapter and for sound out from the VGA you need the S/PDIF internal cable connected. I didn't quite understand what you were trying to do, now I do.
So what I understand from what you say is that your sound system does not have any S/PDIF in but has HDMI input instead. Does it have 3.5mm jacks or RCA jacks for audio in?

  • Which DVI connector for MacBook Pro model 3,1?

I assume the DVI out on the 2007 MacBook Pro (model identifier 3,1) is a nonstandard DVI and requires a DVI-to-DVI adapter? It looks like a fullsize connector that I could attach with a standard DVI, but I thought I needed a 30.00 adapter, is this true?

The connector that will be used on your MBP has to reflect the input requirements of you TV.  Newer ones will have HDMI inputs, older ones may have VGA.  In both instances, you will have to supply audio to your TV via the audio output port of your MBP.

  • Wanting to hook my hp destop to HD tv

I am wanting to hook my hp desktop to my hdmi tv. the computer is does not have a hdmi hookup. I have gotten lots of different suggestions. not sure what to do. someone told me today to go to best buy, buy a hdmi video card for my computer and then hook them together. I was also told I would need at least 4 ram and of course my computer has 3 ram, thanks for any advice.

4 RAM?  4MB?  4GB???  What units?  I'm assuming 4GB, in which case you do NOT need that much memory to drive an HDTV.  I drove my 46" AQUOS from a machine with only 1GB RAM for quite a while.  All the PC needs to be able to do is to drive a 1920x1080 output (for 1080p TVs), which nearly any PC made in the past 5-6 years can do.  720p requires even less resources from the machine.  (However, 1080p full motion video playback is a different story, if you want to play back Blu-Rays and such.)
What outputs DOES your computer have?  Does it have DVI outputs?
DVI and HDMI use the same electrical signaling for video, so it is easy to find DVI-to-HDMI adapters and cables.  These won't provide sound via HDMI, you'll need a separate audio connection.  Some TVs support a "PC audio" input that can be bound to one of the HDMI inputs.
If your PC only has VGA outputs, you need a TV that has VGA inputs or a new video card that has DVI or HDMI outputs.
One other small limitation of the DVI-to-HDMI approach - Older PCs (before 2007-2008 or so) didn't support an optional component of DVI called HDCP.  If you want Blu-Ray playback you need HDCP support.  If you don't care about Blu-Ray, HDCP likely won't matter to you.  This is a good thing since it's next to impossible to find out whether a DVI video card supports HDCP or not without actually attempting to play back a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD.  HDMI-based equipment is, however, guaranteed to support HDCP.

  • Connect by Belkin from MBP/Retina to TV

I just bought a 'connect by bel kin' which transfers video to my HDTV.. I was told it transfers sound as we'll but so far I have not been able to figure this out. I am new to Mac so I do not know where I would look to change that. Any help?

First make sure your MacBook Pro is new enough to send audio over HDMI. Older ones did not. Check this list by Apple:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241
If your MacBook Pro doesn't make the cut, you'll need a separate audio cable running from the audio out port to an audio in port on your TV.

  • Basic AV Receiver/FIOS Questions

OK, I know this is basic stuff for most of you, but bear with me as I'm not the tech wizard I always hoped I would be.
I currently have FIOS, A Blu-Ray Player, and a game system connected to my HDTV with individual HDMI Cables going through an automatic switch (whatever device I power on is the what shows up on the TV) - the output of the switch goes to the TVs HDMI input (older tv only has 1 HDMI In connection (don't laugh))
I am upgrading my AV receiver to one that offers 4 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output as well as the usual connections.
    Here are the questions:
    1.  If I connect FIOS to one of the HDMI inputs on the receiver and then the HDMI out from the receiver to the TV - does this mean I must turn on the AV Receiver in order to watch TV?  Also, can I use the TV speakers in those instances when surround sound is not needed.
    2.  If I connect the other components to HDMI inputs on the receiver, I assume I would have to rever to manually switching between sources thourgh the receiver as opposed to the automatic switching I now get from the 3 way switch.
    3.  If I connect the FIOS box directly to the TV, how can I then take advantage of the surround capabilities of the receiver?
I'm sure I'm overlooking some other questions, but I would appreciate any advice I can get.
    Thanks

1a - Yes, you receiver would have to be on to watch TV.
1b - Depends on your AVR. You may have to switch the audio from the AVR to the TV.
    2. Yes. To alleviate this, you may want to look at universal remote, which would set the inputs for you. Logitech's Harmony remotes would work, series 500 and higher.
3- If you TV has an optical out, you could run a digital cable from the Audio Out of the TV to the AVR. This should allow you to take advantage of Dolby Digital 5.1.
When I had the Verizon STB's, I connected the component cables out to the TV and the HDMI to my AVR. That way, I was able to watch TV w/o surround as needed, and gave me the ability to use the Surround Sound when I wanted. The only issue for me was that the STB's would lose their SD Override setting, and cause SD programming to stretch.

  • Headless Server with 1600x900 resolution

    Hi,
I'm running my Mac Mini without a monitor in a headless mode. It has OS X Server installed.
Now I'd like to connect to the server using VNC with a resolution of 1600x900. My notebook uses this
one. OS X onmy offers me 2 resolutions like 1024x768 and 1280x1024.
AFter following a hint of this community I've installed Display Menu which gives me much more choices. But I'm still missing 1600x900.
Someone has a hint for me to make OS X offer this resolution under Yosemite?
    Thx
    Sascha

When a Mac is running in headless mode the video card is actually disabled completely and a minimal software driven 'screen' is used. Apart from the limited range of resolutions provided you will also find it is slower to draw the screen - even for Screen Sharing.
The use of DisplayMenu and SwitchResX are software solutions but you could consider a hardware based solution -
If this computer is a server in a rack then you could connect it to a KVM and the KVM will make the Mac think the monitor is permanently attached and you will see the resolutions supported by the monitor attached to the KVM
If you use a Gefen DVI Detective+ or HDMI Detective+ then these devices will 'learn' the resolutions offered by a monitor and keep sending that information to the Mac even if the monitor is turned off or completely disconnected
If you use a Fit-Headless then it will similarly to the Gefen devices send a signal to the Mac to trick it in to thinking a monitor is attached, however the Fit-Headless is cheaper but unlike the Gefen is not a pass-through device
For the Gefen see http://www.gefen.com/kvm/ext-hd-edidpn.jsp?prod_id=14859 or http://www.gefen.com/kvm/ext-dvi-edidp.jsp?prod_id=4715
    For the Fit-Headless see http://www.fit-pc.com/web/products/fit-headless/
Note: The latest Mac mini supports 4K resolutions at 30fps on the HDMI but older Mac minis only support 1920x1080 on the HDMI. As you only want to do 1600x900 this should be ok.

  • Importing from Panasonic SDR S7 camcorder

Help! I would be grateful if someone could confirm what I suspect is the problem I am having importing video files from my new Panasonic SDR S7 camcorder onto my G5 Mac OS X (10.4.11) powered by Tiger software. I think that I probably need to upgrade the software to Leopard but before I do so I would like to know that his would help. When I connect the camera to the computer is does not locate it - it simply says 'Camera not connected'. All advice gratefully received.

Your camera shoots in MPEG2 format, which must be converted for use in iMovie. You will need something like MPEG Streamclip (free) and the Quicktime MPEG2 Playback component (about $20 from Apple). You can convert the clips to DV or other supported format.
The newer Panasonic high definition cameras will connect directly to iMovie 08 without the need for this conversion, but I don't think the older Standard Def cameras like yours are supported. (but I have not tested your camera myself).
There are a lot of good reasons to go to Leopard, but I don't think it will help in your case.

DVI interface does't allow audio. Is there optical IN from your Panasonic TV? By then you can connect your ATV to Panasonic using optical together. It will work.

Open System Preferences > Displays > select the window for you external monitor > click on the Arrangement tab and check the box next to Mirror Displays. It may be slightly different in Lion, but the idea is the same.

  • Can I Hook an Apple TV to an older TV that does not have HDMI Ports using a connector cable

I have an older Sony HD TV and would like to hook my Apple TV to that TV but it does not have HDMI Ports.  Can I hook my Apple TV to this TV through a cable adapter that converts HDMI to Component Video and Audio (Red Green Blue Video Cables, Yellow White Audio) or HDMI to S-Video.  I have both these connections on my TV.  Thanks

Thanks, I actually meant a converter box I just wanted to make sure that using that would work.  With Amazon FireTV Sticks for example I  jhave been told that only a direct HDMI connection to the TV would allow the device to work at all.
