HDMI vs Component cables

I burned a dvd using idvd.  When I play it on my Samsung BluRay DVD player using the HDMI cables to the flatscreen tv, the "theme" plays, but no other added slideshows or clips will play.  The counter on the dvd player shows something is playing.  However, a "no signal" message floats across the flatscreen tv.   When I use component cable, all's well.  Why won't it play properly with HDMI cables ?    Do I need to specify something different before burning ?
thanks.

I have an Retina display MacBook Pro with HMDI out port. I also have an HDMI to Component cable with Audio Plugs. How can I get HDMI out to work with this cable when plugged into the MacBook Pro and connected to the TVs Component and Audio in ports.

Will not work.  To my knowledge, dual converting like that isn't supported.  The Mac must detect the connected video output device and that sort of info cannot be done across an analog component uni-directional connection.

  • Anyone using a HDMI to component cable?

    Using an Apple TV 2
My TV doesn't have HDMI - I see cables for sale, but not at the Apple store. Anyone use one so I know it will work?
    Thanks

Can anyone answer the original question - Are you doing this?
Yes, using the "converter" option. Or rather I can do this and have for test purposes but now have enough HDMI HDTVs in the home to not be forced to do this if I choose not to do so.
Have you tried and it didn't work?
As indicated above I tried it. Normally, the only time the converter I have won't currently work is if the target TV does not support 720p input. No one has yet mentioned the fact that unless you purchase a "broadcast level" device, these converters do not include any scaling capabilities. If your particular TV only supports 1080i component input, then even the converter will will not work because the component output is still at 720p as output by the TV2.
    DId it work?
    Once again, it did.

  • HDMI vs. Component Cables for iTV

    Hello All,
I did not see a place to ask a questiona about iTV so I am asking it here if that is alright. If you have an iTV connected via HDMI and component cables can you switch between which input you would like to view? I know of someone who has both connected and can only show its picture if the HDMI cable is unplugged. Is there a conflich between HDMI and component cables?
    Thanks A Latté

  • HDMI Output to Component Cable setup

Will the new Apple TV work with a cable similar to a PlayStation that has a HDMI out cable that converts to a component/audio set. I have an older HD television that does not have HDMI inputs and only component input.
    Message was edited by: konaaz

As you mentioned, the adapter cables won't work. There needs to be a conversion of digital (HDMI) signal to analog (component) which requires a device (converter box). (below are URLs that explain why these cables don't work - no endorsements implied)
    http://www.hdtvsupply.com/hdmi-to-component-cable.html
    http://www.bluejeanscable.com/articles/component-to-hdmi-cable.htm
With only the HDMI output the new ATV will likely enforce HDCP (digital copy protection) so some content may not output at all. The current ATV doesn't enforce HDCP per the discussion below.

Your TV hasn't entered some odd picture in picture mode has it with  two 'inputs' side by side?

  • I'm looking for a good HDMI to component converter,

I decided to get a 2nd Apple TV for our basement room where we have an older TV with no HDMI input.  I bought a cheaper HDMI to component converter but whenI hooked it up to the TV, I just got some weird green images and after triple checking all the cables, and testing the new Apple TV on our main TV with HDMI, I decided that the converter was the problem.  Has anyone had any luck using a converter to get Apple TV to work with an older TV?
If so, please let me know what to look for.
    Thanks.

Potential issues for you with such a converter.
If the converter is HDCP compliant then you wont be able to watch content from the iTunes store or netflix.
If your TV isn't widesceen or doesn't accept 720p then you'll likely find your picture is squashed or doesn't fill the screen properly.

  • 720P over component cable connection?

I am about to take the plunge and purchase an Apple TV but have one question that I would love an ansswer to before I makee the purchase. My Pioneer 50" plasma has two HDMI inputs that are both in use (one for the Time Warner cable box and the other for PS3/Blu-ray). One of the main selling points for me on the Apple TV is the ability to rent in HD (since Time Warner on Demand does not have such capability). I think I will probably still use the PS3/Blu-ray more often so I'm thinking of hooking up the Apple TV to the non-HDMI component input (the three color one -- sorry, I'm not very tech oriented). Am I correct that the HD rentals would look just as good as if the Apple TV were hooked up via HDMI (since the HD rentals top out at 720P)? Audio is not a concern since I will hook up an optical cable to my Bose 3-2-1 receiver regardless of video input. Basically, this is a long-winded way of asking if anyone gets 720P output on an Apple TV using a component cable. Many thanks in advance.

How about one cable for audio and video instead of 4 or 5 with component.(4 if using optical for audio, 5 if using stereo rca cables)
HDMI is much better since one cable will give you your audio and video. That alone is mor ethan enough reason to use HDMI.

  • Can I make apple tv2 work on an HDTV with component connections using an HDMI to component converter?

I bought an apple tv2 and hooked it up through an HDMI to component converter then to my HDTV as it does not have an HDMI connection. When I turned it on, I got the start up screen x3. Three of the start up screen all across the display. Is there any way to make it work? Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
I'd strat by restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for a 30 seconds. It may however be the converter, compliant converters won't let you watch HDCP protected content and probably won't support scaling either.

  • HDMI and Component Switching?

    Hello all.
I have an issue with my AppleTV that I'm unable to use HDMI or DVI (with a DVI convertor dongle). Usually with my Plasma TV I use a component cable, this worked fine, but now I've swapped my Plasma for a version with HDMI (and no component) and I can't get any video output using HDMI. I can't remember if there was a setting on the AppleTV to set the display type to composite or HDMI outputs. My AppleTV was upgraded to Take 2 before I changed TV sets.
    1) Is there a setting within the Apple TV menus to switch between component and HDMI?
    2) Is there a special key-press on the remote control to reset video settings? (as I don't have any way to view the video output at the moment)
    thanks in advance.

There's no way of switching between component and HDMI manually (HDMI will always take precedent over component), there is however a way to switch resolution which likely isn't but could be an issue I suppose.
You can cycle through video modes by holding down the 'menu' and '+' buttons on the remote for 6 seconds. (then to cycle use the '+' and '-')

  • Apple TV  - HDMI or Component

Please forgive me If the issue I have raised is one that has been discussed at length previously. I am new to all things Apple and new to discussion forums.
I am now the owner of an Apple TV.
I intend to use it with my Panasonic HD ready plasma. However, I am currently using all three of the HDMI ports - A Humax freesat HD PVR, a Panasonic BD player and a PS3. Of which I use the PS3 the least.
What connection is the best for Apple TV? HDMI or Component?
Should I simply connect the Apple TV via Component - without having to reconnect anything else.
Or should I hook up the Apple TV via HDMI and re-connect the PS3 via component?
    Sorry for being a muppet!
Any help on this issue would be appreciated.

If you have a 1080p24 television (a.k.a. TrueHD), then I would advise keeping the PS3 on HDMI and using component for the AppleTV. The reason for this is that the PS3 can play movies and games at full 1080p, whereas the HD content on the AppleTV is heavily compressed in comparison and limited to 720p. As far as I can see, the only benefit you get by running the AppleTV in 1080p mode is when viewing high resolution photos.
I have also had many problems using the AppleTV in 1080p mode with an HDMI cable and my Sony Bravia 1080p24 LCD television. When I try and play a video, I get a blank screen until I reset the ATV. The only way I have managed to prevent this from happening is by using a component cable and switching to 720p mode.

  • No image with component cable through receiver?

I have just purchased an Apple TV device, since my HDMI Input in my projector is not working everything is not plugged in my receiver with component cable. here is a list of what my audio/video setup is :
    - Sony PS3 (Plugged in Receiver in Component (Video) Optical (Audio)
    - HD-DVD Toshiba (Plugged in Receiver in Component (Video) Optical (Audio)
    - Bell ExpressVu HD/PVR Receiver (Plugged in Receiver in Component (Video) Optical (Audio)
    - Denon AVR-5805 (Out to Projector in Component)
    - Hitachi HD-PJ52
the problem is that i'm not getting any signal from my apple tv when I selected it with my receiver, not much of a mac guy, so not sure where to start....is there an on/off switch on this thing...
    thank you

sorry everything is NOW plugged in my receiver with component cable

  • HDMI vs Component Video

I just ordered the new Apple Tv and need to know if it is possible to connect it to a tv via component video? I do not have an HDMI connection on my stereo or tv.

Yes it is possible. I use HD Fury 1.

I connected mine directly to VGA input on my plasma screen. But you can also buy one of those VGA to Component. But I haven't tried this one yet.

  • No picture using component cable

    Hi All!
Sorry if this has been discussed many times before.
I have a TV without the ability to use HDMI, only SCART and I've bought a component cable in order to connect my Apple TV with my tv. I just can't seem to get any picture and I've already tried cycling through resolutions by following the troubleshooting (holding down menu and for 6 seconds and wait 2 minutes) without any result.
    Message was edited by: Jetwash13

Unfortunately it seems (although I might be wrong) that the cable is intende o work the other way around, ie the scart end would go into a compatible device such as a DVD player with component over scart and the RCA jacks would go into a tv. This is largely to cover the situation I mentioned before where scart on tv sets is usually composite.
That doesn't mean to say that the cable couldn't work the way round you are using it, I think it would, except that it would only work where the scart connector on the tv worked with component. As I said before 99% of scart connections on tv's are composite only. If your tv is one of those that supports component over scart, you may well have a setting on your tv that can toggle between composite and component over scart. You will need to refer to your tv manual to find this out.
If you have an RCA-RCA cable (any one will do) and you have a yellow composite connector on your tv, you can check if the tv is working properly by connecting the yellow port on the tv to the green port on the tv with the said cable, whereby you should get a black and white picture.
