Hdmi vs Optical

Hi folks,
I've got an Apple TV that's connected to my Sony Bravia via HDMI and it seems to be dropping part of an audio channel.  When I connect the audio using Optical it seems to work Ok.
The song that I use for reference is While my guitar gently weeps by the beatles.  The weeping guitar and the also the main piano bit at the begining sound way off in the distance, like they're just getting picked up incidentally as part of another recorded channel.  You can test it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3RYvO2X0Oo&feature=youtube_gdata_player
The same thing happens if I play from It from iTunes etc so it's not a youtube issue specifically.
My question is if any body else has noticed this and if there is a resolution so that I can get all the sound coming through using hdmi to my tv?
Regards.

likely an issue with the tv
optical and hdmi are both digital interfaces
where the audio is 1's and 0's

After the update I can not output audio to hdmi and optical audio at the same time. Anyone having the same issue? Did apple remove this functionality?

  • TV with no HDMI or optical inputs!

I know the new Apple TV is cool, but I've got a TV with no HDMI or optical audio inputs. How can I use the new device?
My older Apple TV works great and I would love to use all the AirPlay features including Netflix. I can afford a new Apple TV, but I can't afford a new television!
Steve, please don't let my older Apple TV become obsolete!

I'm not sure why you think your current tv will now be obsolete, it's my understanding that your current tv will continue to function as it always has done.

  • Running HDMI and Optical  to Denon Receiver for separate zones

I have the AppleTV (generation 2 I think) that I had setup in the following manner:
HDMI direct to Denon receiver for main room (both video and audio) - Zone 1
Optical audio to "Optical to RCA" converter then RCA cable to Denon for audio to patio - Zone 2
This allowed me to AirPlay music from my iPad to the AppleTV and output that audio to both zones at the same time. The added convenience was to carry my iPad around (in or out) to change music as needed. I hadn't used the patio speakers in a while but now notice it won't output to the patio (zone 2) speakers. I have double checked cabling, confirmed speakers work outside by changing to the radio tuner, etc. I have power to the Optical to RCA converter with a red light On. So my guesses are:
    1) something has changed on the AppleTV not allowing output to both HDMI and Optical (new update make changes?)
    2) possibly the converter isn't working although it is showing power and I have done nothing with that box since setting this up a couple of years ago
When I look into audio settings I see "auto" and 16bit for output, Dolby Digital auto, on, or off, but nothing that specifically calls out optical.
    Any ideas?

Well,  chalk one up for Alley_Cat. I went back to the drawing board and started playing around with various settings to see what I could find out. After playing around with the various listening modes, I noticed I could not get the receiver to play in "Stereo" mode in Zone 1 at all - everything coming from the center channel. Did some research and found I needed to push a button on the remote D/ST (Direct/Stereo..I think) and that fixed my Zone 1 issue. Thinking that would solve the Zone 2 issue, I checked those speakers and still nothing. After playing with it some more, I took one last look at the back of the receiver and noticed in my frustration earlier I put the RCA plugs in the "out" jacks and not the "in". Switched those and lo and behold worked again.
To be clear, the mis-aligned RCA jacks was not the original problem, and I cant say for sure it was the D/ST button because I tried a number of things before switching the jack locations...but it is fixed for now. Fingers crossed it will stay that way! Thanks.

  • How does apple tv2 switch between hdmi and optical

I have the ability to connect my Apple TV2 to my avr using both HDMI and optical......is there any benfit using the optical for lossless music as opposed to HDMI and if so how can I get apple tv2 to differentiate....or does it use HDMI as default if connected?

AFAIK, sound is sent simultaneously via HDMI and optical. mute the sound on your TV as necessary.

There are many HDMI switches out there. Any advice on which ones are best?
I cannot personally recommend one as I have no need to use one.
Read reviews for the ones in your price range.
Also, does the HDMI switch transmit audio?
It absolutely should but be sure to read the reviews and specs for the specific one you are purchasing. Like anything else, I am sure they are some junk switches out there.

  • Separate audio sources for HDMI and optical?

    Hi there,
I'm setting up an Apple TV 2nd gen for my parents. I want to set it up in the following way:
How do I set it up so that when they're watching Netflix (or whatever), audio comes through HDMI, but when they're using airplay wirelessly with the iPad, audio comes through the optical cable? Currently, it's an all or nothing kind of thing... without the optical cable plugged in, EVERYTHING plays through HDMI. But when we plug in the optical cable, EVERYTHING plays through optical.
The way their A/V receiver is set up is that the HDMI port is on zone 1, where the speakers are in the bedroom, and optical is set up for zone 2, which goes to the speakers on the back porch, so obviously they don't want audio going out there when they're watching videos.

No, just that the sales guy at the Apple Store said this could be done. Ah well, pretty much par for the course for Apple products. They work how most people want them to work (or more specifically, how Steve wanted them to work), but the minute you need to do something that's slightly out of the ordinary, you're pretty much out of luck, because they give end users so little control over anything.

  • Unable to get sound from new ATV installation using either HDMI or optical audio to Bose receiver.  Good video using HDMI.

Need help setting up my Apple TV.  I have good video, but no audio using either the HDMI cable by itself or by connecting a optical video cable through the aux receiver for home theater.  I've replaced the Apple TV box, swapped out HDMI cables, reset the Apple TV box, all to no avail.  Any suggestions?  Thanks

Connected only using HDMI to Onkyo Receiver and HDMI out to Samsung 1080p TV. So far so good.

  • Sync problems with ATV per HDMI and optical out

Have some sync problems with ATV (actual), TV is connected via HDMI, sound goes over optical cable into DAC (Rega) and then to the amplifier, when using only TV-sound everything is fine, switching to the external speakers brings up a little delay, around 1/10 second. Any chance to fix this?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
I believe this delay is caused by the DAC, I don't think there is anything you can do about this.

  • Using HDMI and optical

Can HDMI be connected to TV and optical connected to separate stereo reciever? I want to have music sent to different receiver/speakers than home theater setup

I have a related question: same setup but I want to match the word length (bit depth) of the Atv optical output to the input of my DSP (Meridian 519). I can select the output word length as either 16bits or Auto, but my assumption is that the only feedback the Atv will get for auto is via HDMI, which is connected to the display... a separate device. Yes, I can select 16 on both, but I don't want to unnecessarily down sample the bit rate. OTOH, the display probably says 24bit is just fine.... provided the Atv can deliver that. Unfortunately, there is no auto detect on the Meridian. Just 16-24 in increments of 2.
    So:
Can the Atv (v3) deliver a consistent 24 bit word via the optical output?
IF not, what bit rate can it reliably deliver?
What bit rate is the Sony display (current 4k model) likely to be asking for via HDMI?
    thanks!

  • Samsung LN52A650 Audio - HDMI or Optical Cable

    Hello,
I purchased the Samsung LN52A650 in December and just had it mounted. I keep hearing conflicting opinions in regards to whether or not I need a digital optical cable for the audio or will an hdmi cable suffice? I have a Denon AVR1909 receiver and will be hooking a PS3 to it as well as a 7.2 speaker system. Will my hdmi cable carry the audio that i need? Thanks very much.
    Sincerely,
    VM The Prince
    Solved!

Actually, if you are wanting to use your PS3 as a BD player, and want to hear the HD audio codecs contained on BD movies, you have to use HDMI. Toslink won't carry the new codecs.

  • HDMI or Optical for audio

Which connection should I use for audio, which will go from Apple TV to my receiver....should I use the audio coming from the HDMI or use the Optical audio out port? Which one is better?

Thanks to the powers that be, the audio going into the TV through a HDMI cable cannot be passed through to a receiver.
This is because both the audio and video in the HDMI cable is encrypted. If the TV passed on the audio part through a digital cable (toslink/coax) then that digital audio would have to be unencrypted.
Personally, I think the whole HDMI spec is crap. DVI was sooo much better.
So there's nothing for you to configure - just plug the digital audio cable into the back of the ATV, and enjoy out of sync audio like the rest of us...

  • HDMI or Optical digital audio cable???

I have an ATV2 with cable box, Samsung sound bar w/blu ray DVD player, and a Samsung led tv. I have HDMI cables and also a optical digital audio cable from my cable box to the sound bar. My tv sound is fine but when I switch over to the ATV2 the tv sound remains on and no sound from the ATV2. I can't figure out what to do.

Shouldn't the HDMI cables carry the sound along with the video? Do I really need the optical digital audio cable at all?
yes they do, but you don't have your kit connected up so that it would do it.
if you wanted to use the HDMI to carry the audio you would need to connect the appletv direct to the soundbar - as it is just now you aren't doing that.

  • HDMI  Out @ Optical Out at the same time?

I need to install an ATV 2 in my old home theater system.  The reciver does not accept HDMI inputs but does accept optical inputs.  Can I run HDMI to the TV and use the optical out port on the ATV 2 to direct the audio to the receiver for decoding and presentation?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Yes indeed that's how many of us do it. It also helps eliminate potential HDMI issues by connecting the Apple TV and TV by HDMI directly.

  • Can I push audio out the Apple TV HDMI and optical output simultaneously?

I am trying to put audio to two different amplifiers 1) Surround sound and 2) stereo audio.  Using HDMI connection to surround sound amp and trying to simultaneously use optical for audio to second stereo amplifier.  NOt getting it to work and thinking the Apple TV box only drives one at a time.  DOes anyone out there know?

It does both, I have OA to sound bar and HDMI to tv and get audio on both no problem.  It is something on your set up.  I think from your post both work but not at the same time?  If you give a little detail it will help, but ATV does both audio outputs simultaneously and independently.
