HDR-SR11 HD Videos importing

I connect my hdr-sr11 video camera through the usb. My mac recognizes the pictures and standard video I have recorded and taken but the HD video is not recognized.
What do I do to see these HD videos?

How do you know if you have an intel based mac and if you don’t have an intel based mac are there any other options of getting your HD video from the Sony HDR-SR11 camcorder onto your mac?
I see a lot of posts on mac users having trouble getting their HD videos off this Sony camera which came highly recommended by mac world. I disappointed, not very mac friendly.
Basically I need to get these HD videos off the camera and onto the mac to then import them into a dvd project I’m working on in iDVD. Is there any hope or did I just by an expensive HD camera that is really meant for PC users?

  • Importing movies from Sony Handycam HDR-SR11 into iMovie HD 6.0.3

I am unable to open the .MTS clips in iMovie HD 6.0.3 that I've copied to my hard drive via a USB connection from the HDR-SR11. This would be my first time attempting to use iMovie and have troubleshooted to no avail. I am unable to find a clear answer as to whether the movies from this model Sony camcorder would work with my current version of iMovie. Would I need to upgrade and purchase iLife '09?

Hi swimnfred7 - welcome to the forum!
.MTS files are AVCHD- based - a form of MPEG format. iMovie HD needs .dv formatted material, imported into iMovie via a firewire connection. It may be possible to convert your files to .dv (not certain about that) using:
    MPEG StreamClip (free):
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
    Apple MPEG2 PlayBack ($20):
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
It may be that you will instead need to use the latest imovie variant - iMovie 09.
I'm sure others will help you out here.

Can I directly upload video from my HDR-SR11 SONY to Premiere Pro???

thank you Shoot.  I was afraid that the n word would answer that querie.  OK.  Please recommend a FREE software that I can use to import on to the hard drive that is reliable and w/out error messages e.g. "Browser will close" as in sonys PMH a new replacement for PMB that fails horribly.  I uninstalled and installed the Sony  PMH four or five times w/Sony "Techs" [I you want to call them that].  And they admitted that the software has problems.  The final solution from the "tech" on the phone was that to just keep on uninstalling and install until it worked.  Wow!  That coming from Sony the electronics Giant.  Below is the transcript of one of the chats concerning this issue.

  • IMovie '09 Won't Import HD Content from Sony HDR-SR11 Camcorder

    Hi,
iMovie stopped importing HD content from Sony HDR-SR11 camcorder. It only recognizes the standard definition content in the preview thumbnails. Previously this used to work with both a FireWire cable and a Mini USB. All of a sudden it doesn't import HD clips. There's no plugin failure either, because I reinstalled iMovie '09.
    System Specifications:
    Intel iMac 20" (Late 2008)
    Intel Core 2 Duo@ 2.4 GHz.
    4 GB RAM
    Snow Leopard (10.6.4)
    Thanks!

With this camera you must erase the SD clips from the camera before you can import the HD clips.

  • IMovie '08 7.1.4 breaks Sony HDR-SR11 AVCHD Import

Back in August I upgraded to iMovie 7.1.4 and I can no longer import files from my Sony HDR-SR11 AHCHD. IMovie recognized the camera, opens the import window, begins the import but at the end of the import the following message appears in a dialog box "An Error Occurred During Import: There was a problem importing 1 of 1 clips from your camera. Please review the imported movies carefully." No movie loads. Has anyone else had and resolved this problem? Oddly, when I upgraded to Final Cut Express 4.01 the same problem occurred so I use FCE 4.0 instead. I am really interested in determining why these upgrades broke the import with my camera.

I was using Sony HRD-SR12E and facing same problem "An Error Occurred During Import" when importing long clips. Problem solved with directly connect the USB2 into my InterBased iMac. Thanks!

  • Sony HDR-SR11 /AVCHD/NON-INTEL MAC/HELP

I have called both sony and apple tech support and both offered little help today.
I have a Sony HDR-SR11 that I shot some HD content with. The computer registers that the camera is there as an external HDD. Sony's FAQ suggested that I save the AVCHD file to my HDD and it should work....NOPE
I hooked it up to a PC and installed the software it comes with and I was able to view my files but not export them into a normal format.
I have 2 sets of files one set is .m2t and the other is .mts both say they are Unix Executable files..***!
I have a Power MAc G5 running Leopard and Final Cut Pro 6 I ran the software update and it says that as of today 100% up to date yet it says that FCP should be 6.0.2 mine says 6.0
Apple support said that it may not even work on a non-intel Mac.....HELP
anyone get this to work, supposedly Imovie work s with it but the files are grayed out in the menus for imovie so I dunno all I know is I need this footage off the camera ASAP.
    Thanks

I came here actually looking for a different solution and not the one I'm about to say... but I will tell you that the new iMovie will import the video straight off the camera (in either 960x540 or 1920x1080). It's not ideal, but it works.
In fact, I'm doing so right now, but I came here hoping there might be news of a new fix so that FCP will import it directly (it will not, log & capture will not do it, just so others are clear on this).
That said, the video off the camera looks very nice. I'm still happy with the camera, even if I do have to do one hoop jump before I can edit.

  • OneStep asking for firewire connection-my Sony HDR-SR11 doesn't have firewire port. Help.

The question says it all.  I wanted to use OneStep to move all my home movies to a DVD, but iDVD is asking me to connect via firewire and my video camera-a Sony HDR-SR11-doesn't have a firewire port.  I don't want to go through the extra step of importing into imovie because that will take a ton of time.  Any other suggestions?

Only 2 options that come to mind. The first is to do a one step from a movie (as opposed to a one step from from the camera) within the file menu in iDvd. And yes, you will have to export first from the video editing app (iMovie / FCP) prior to using iDvd's One Step. No way to avoid this when using apple's iLife.
The other option is to use a hardware approach; something like Sony's Dvdirect that requires no PC and burns directly to DvD-R at the touch of one button. Menus aren't as nice as iDvd's but the quality is very good. Try ebay if this option appeals to you. I picked up one for about the same price as iLife software.
Hope this helps but if not just come on back.

  • Log and transfer from HDR-SR11 Sony

    Dear All,
I am trying to import a video from a HD CAMERA HDR-SR11, but the size of the imported video is too heavy, I am getting 1GIGA per minute. Does anyone know how to reduce the file size during the importing process, perhaps reducing the quality?
    The format that I am getting is Apple ProRes 422, 1440 x 1080 (1920 x 1080), Millions
    16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz.
    Thanks a lot for helping.
    All the best,
    Nicko

Shouldn't be the same size of the file in the camera?
    Hey Nicko,
No mate. The camera format is a heavily compressed MPEG4 variant (AVCHD). This is a modern acquisition format, and not a camera native edit format supported directly within FCP. The AVCHD support offered by FCP is through Log and Transfer which transcodes the files to a more edit friendly format that you can work with. The choices at present are AIC and ProRes. You could recompress them again if you wanted to a more compressed (smaller) format, but you'd lose time and quality, and disc space is cheap these days.

  • Video importation

Why can't I import video from my sony handycam HDR-PJ650? It doesn't recognize that the camera is connected to the computer (macbookpro).

There appears to be 3 species of Premiere Elements 11 Mac (Premiere Elements 11 Mac/Adobe, Premiere Elements 11 Editor/Mac App Store, and Premiere Elements 11 Quick Editor/Mac App Store). You say that you have the Premiere Elements 11 Editor version. There are differences between Windows and Mac, but also differences between the Mac App Store (Mac Only) versions and Premiere Elements 11 Mac as well as Windows.
For now, let us see if the following works for you if you want to do the file transfer from camera to Premiere Elements 11 Editor via USB.
What are the properties of your source media? For example...1080i25? Can we assume that this is AVCHD with a .mp4 or .mov file extension?
Open Premiere Elements 11 Editor and go to File Menu/New/Project and select the project preset PAL AVCHD Full HD1080i25. Make sure that you have a check mark next to Force Selected Project Setting On This Project before you exit the new project dialog.
Then, Add Media/Videos from Flip or Cameras/Video Importer. If you have your camera connected to the computer via USB (with necessary camera setting for USB transfer), when you get to the Video Importer dialog, you should see your video files. They will be coming from path indicated in the Source field of the Video Importer...typically  drive letter...Camera or Card Reader.
See if that works for you in your Mac computer environment.
The following is the Getting Started Information specific for that Adobe Premiere Elements 11 Editor (Mac App Store)
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/premiereelements/editor/WSa8d319461f013b78-78fb9fff13c284dc45f -8000.html#WS27dec87a7cd59989-307bc0cf137a8ef0176-8000
We will be watching for further developments. If this does not work, then on to saving files to computer hard drive and from there into Premiere Elements with its Add Media/Files and Folders.
    Thanks.

  • New Macbook video import problem.

    Hi all,
I have just gone and bought myself a new Macbook Pro and I am very pleased with it. From a video standpoint I plan to use it to import and edit HD video from my Canon HV20. The new Macbook only has a Firewire 800 port and so the cable that I would normally use to connect computer and camcorder will not work as it is 'mini' Firewire to Firewire 400. I am assuming that there is/will be a 'mini' to FW800 cable available, but in the interim I am using a Firewire hub that is connected to the Macbook by a 400-800 cable. And herein lies my problem ! Although iMovie8 detects my HV20, it will not display or play or import any footage from the tape ! It just remains on the blue import screen and although the camcorder is merrily 'playing', no footage is actually making it across to the computer. I think the issue is the Firewire hub part of the connection but I thought it best to garner an opinion from users of this forum. Help !!
    Many thanks in advance, kroguk
    PS
I will also post this on the Macbook forum, so apologies if you see this post twice

Well, I can't find my Belkin FW800-to-4-pin (9-pin-to-4-pin) cable right now ..I'm doing some "tidying up" ..which is always hopeless for finding things afterwards!.. but I DID buy the other day - in the German Mac specialists, erm, can't remember the name - a Sonnet Fast-something (..which I've just put down, and now can't find..) teeny 9-pin-to-6-pin adapter (..so small that I can't find it!..) and I've just tested that with a Sony HC1 HDV camcorder.
    Using the Sonnet adaptor..
..which is mentioned on their website at top-left here: http://www.sonnettech.com/product/adapters/index.html ..on a normal 6-pin-to-4-pin FireWire cable.. I just connected my camcorder and successfully imported HDV from the Sony.
I tested it twice with iMovie HD 6, in the most adverse conditions: 1; connecting to the 9-pin FW800 socket on a G4 17" laptop (..which is generally too slow to import HDV in real-time..) and 2; looped ("daisy-chained") through the 9-pin FW800 sockets (..one socket from the drive to my Mac, the other socket from the drive to the camcorder..) of an external iOmega FireWire drive connected to my Quad G5 Mac, also with iMovie HD 6. Both imports worked perfectly.
I'm also trying it as I write this - I just found the adapter again! - to import into iMovie '08 on the G5, daisy-chained through the external disc (..the G4 is too old or underpowered to run iMovie '08..) and that works as well ..though I did have to "kick" the program into starting a new Event; at first the camera transport ran, but no video imported, so I just Stopped and re-imported.
I bought this adaptor "on spec", as no previous device or adapter had worked properly for me (..converting between 4-pin on a camcorder and 9-pin on a Mac..) and this is the first to have worked, for me. But I have great faith in Sonnet, as they make the extra S-ATA driver card and other bits and bobs which I put in my floorstander G5, and that all "just works".
Ah; the shop where I bought it is ..hold on a moment.. the "m store" in Munich. (Karsten may know them: when Gravis moved from Lindwurmstrasse to Im Tal, the m store opened up right next door to where Gravis had been before) and they're at Lindwurmstrasse 5a, their phone number - they speak English, too - is 0049 89 24 22 35 24 and their website is ..aaaarggh; they don't seem to have one.
Anyway; the Sonnet SimplyFast FireWire 400-to-800 Adapter works perfectly - for me - on the end of a normal 4-pin-to-6-pin FireWire 400 cable, and importing works flawlessly every way I've tried it ..even daisy-chained through an external drive.
    I can heartily recommend it.
But - as always - "your mileage may vary" ..meaning that it might not work so smoothly for you.

Hello, thank you for your help. I finally was able to contact someone from Adobe on line.. It took about 1 hour on hold but I finally won the lotto...Lol. • Video import from PAL camcorder

I have just bought a Canopus ADVC110 which converts analog video to digital and have it hooked into my Powerbook Pro via a firewire lead.
I have my analog PAL camcorder tied into the canopus and am attempting to import some PAL video but not getting very far.
I fire up iMovie and it does indeed detect the camera but when I create a new project it appears as DV-NTSC and not DV-PAL. I have changed the 'New Project frame rate' preference from 29.97 to 25 but still no good. When I click on Import I get the video/audio but the video is VERY jumpy and in black and white and the audio is totally garbled. As the video is PAL and the project says DV-NTSC this might be the issue? I would have thought that the Canopus would remove any PAL/NTSC issues as it is being converted to digital anyway? I don't know how to change the new project from DV-NTSC to DV-PAL, again I thought switching frame rate to 25 would have done this?
So, can anyone help me get a smooth video import onto the Apple? I dont care what resulting file format is as long as I can import and play it. I don't mind buying a different video application if necessary and do have Toast Titanium if that helps.
    Many thanks,

It sounds like you may not have set the dip switches of the Canopus correctly to PAL.
See page 16 of instruction manual for the canopus ADVC110!
