HDRPro hangs when converting to 16 bit

Hi all,
I'm having an issue here with HDRPro. When I first open CS5 and merge to HDRPro (generally three .NEF raw files) everything is fine. I hit "OK", the file is converted in the HDR dialog, and then after the various operations in the main Photoshop window, I get my 16 bit image file. BUT, if after creating one HDR image in this way I then try to do another, CS5 hangs in the main PS window at "32-Bit Preview Options". Normally, at this point there is a conversion progress bar, but it never appears. The image window turns black and a "forbidden" (circle with diagonal slash) icon appears. I am able to switch to previous history states, but I never get to "16 Bits/Channel" and the processed image. If I exit and restart PS, I am again able to process a single HDR image before this happens again. An important clue might be that this happens only if the deghosting feature is used...
Here are some particulars. I am running XP Pro SP3 32 bit (4GB RAM, though obviously not all addressable due to 32 bit limitations) on a Dell Precision M4400 workstation. QuadroFX 770m GA, which works fine will all the open GL stuff. I tried keeping an eye on Task Manager when it hangs and there doesn't seem to be any issue with available memory, Windows reports between 1.5-2 GB available, same as when I do the conversion successfully (when PS is first opened).
In terms of performance I have 20 history states enabled, 4 levels of cache. Photoshop has presently got 1.2 GB of memory (72%) to play with, but making this larger doesn't seem to make any difference.
I will mention a related issue (related anyway to HDR). I notice that if I try to combine more than three exposures, HDRPro  simply refuses to align the images. Less images and I get the various  transforms, crops and marquees necessary to align the features,  but more than this and the automatic align simply doesn't "kick in". I end up with an image in which elements do not line up (when using shots with small positional variations). I stress that when only three images are merged, everything works fine.
In CS4, with large multiple merges to HDR, I sometimes got an out of memory error. Nothing like that in CS5 in either of the two above cases.
Any thoughts appreciated.

  • Really bad banding and artifacts in 16-bit layered greyscale file. Bad banding is retained when converted to 8-bit with No flattening. Flatten 16-bit image and banding and artifacts disappear even with no dither or noise layer. Is this a known bug?

    Has anyone else experienced this?
I thought it was a monitor problem at first, but I'm using a 10-bit per channel Eizo. It seems to be a Photoshop bug based on many layers interacting with each other. When I flatten everything is fine. But I need to work on this image with layers and decent fidelity. Interestingly when I convert to 8-bit without flattening (and utilising the dither function to potentially reduce banding even further), it uses the terrible artifact laden/banding to do the conversion even though when I zoom into 1:1 in my 16-bit document it looks fine. But 50% or 25% zoom I suddenly get these awful artifacts.
Here's some screenshots to clarify. Please note I've used Photoshop for 24 years so I'm no slouch but this is the first time I've seen this. The problem is I need to do some subtle airbrush and texture work on this and it's almost unusable unless I flatten (please note, it does the same in the original 8-bit file and just to say I Gaussian-Blurred every layer with a 30px radius after converting to 16-bit so the there's no longer any 8-bit information in there or reasons for banding/artifacts). I can only think it is some of bug in Photoshop's layering engine.
Has anyone seen this before - dealt with this before?
    Thanks in advance.
Not sure these embedded images will work.
8% zoomed - see all the strange banding and triangular artifacts

    <a href="http://imgur.com/0XJfe5e"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/0XJfe5e.png" title="source: imgur.com" /></a>
and finally 8-bit layered converted from 16-bit with dither.

    help!

I can't speak to why, perhaps someone more knowledgeable than I can speak to that.   But if it only happens at certain views then it's purely a display issue; it won't happen in print or when you downsample to display size.  Such banding issues have always disappeared for me when I output to 8 bit.
I'd assume that it's because of your monitor; it can't display all the colors and when zoomed out there's too wide of a range in a small area so banding occurs.  But that's just my guess.

  • Acrobat Professional hangs when converting word to PDF

I am using Acrobat Professional version 7 and when i use the Convert to PDF option for a large word document it goes through the motions of converting the document but then seems to hang and i get no PDF document created. Also the Word document then says read only in the title as well.
It works fine for small word documents just not large files with pictures.
I have tried uninstalling Acrobat Prof and Office 2003 and re-installing both and it makes no difference.
Can anyone provide any information on what i can try to fix this issue as
    i am out of ideas.
    Thanks
    Lawrence

Empty the TEMP folder or print to the Adobe PDF printer. The latter might be worth trying to be sure things are working.
You may have to uncheck a lot of the options in the PDF Maker preferences, particularly tags. Keep in mind that large graphics require a lot of disk space in the translation as the PS format is not very memory efficient for graphics (at least from what I have seen). You might also make a copy of the DOC file and then select a graphic and choose format. In the lower left corner of the general tab is a compress button. Try that to reduce the graphics resolution and see if that solves the problem.

  • Garageband hangs when converting podcast

I'v tried searching the discussions to find anything on this but this has not yeilded any results. Whats happening is when I export my podcast to iTunes or the desktop it gets stuck on the step "converting". The bar goes across but then turnes into a pinstripe progress bar that just keeps spinning. I'v tried leaving it for as much as an hour for a simple 1 min podcast with 2 chapters and a couple pictures. With experimentation I have found that it only hangs on this step when chapters are added to the podcast. If I remove all chapters then it exports correctly. Chapters without pictures still cause it to hang. Basically the only thing I can do when turning the podcast track on and still have it be able to export is give the whole podcast a picture. Please help, I need to start podcasting my classes for reference on upcoming tests.

  • Robohelp hangs when converting an FM Inset

    Hi,
I'm using TCS4. I linked an FM book in Robohelp. Everytime Robohelp converts an FM Inset, it hangs. For some reason, the Adobe Distiller decodes the Inset as an image (divided in pages, sized according to the anchored frame in the Inset.) The Inset has conditional text as well.
    Can you help?
    Thanks!
    Kai

Good to know that the patch did something for your situation.
Regarding your graphics - I can't offer too much guidance since I don't really work with them much in my FM to RH project, but I seem to recall some early TCS webinar where RJ Jacquez talked about sticking a graphic and a bunch of captions and callouts all inside a single anchored frame to get them to come over. It wouldn't work if they were all separate - they had to be grouped together and captured inside a single anchored frame.
Again, if you can whip up a simple example that illustrates the failure, report it to Adobe and send it to them - they like to work on examples that are broken to analyze them.

  • FlashPaper hangs when converting PowerPoint t to Flash swf

I tried a very simple one page powerpoint with the word test.
I hit FlashPaper-convert to Flash SWF; the dialog box appears and
indicates it is converting but it never finished. Is this also a
bug and is there a fix?
    Thx,
    Dave

No you can't from a book - there might be a script for it?
I've had alook around and I can't find one.
You could place all the indesign files into a new indesign file and then export to SWF that way.
There's a script called multipage importer that would be able to automate the inesertion of all the pages.

Why does captivate hang when it is closed in window 8.1 professional ? How is it solved?

    Hi,
Do you see the issue every time you close captivate or is it only in some scenarios? Does it show any error messages? What captivate version are you using (64 bit or 32 bit)? Can you provide some more information or screenshots which can help us reproduce the issue.

  • LR 4.4.1 on Win 8.1 suddenly started to hang when importing via usb from camera

I'm running LR 4.4.1 on Win 8.1 on a fairly new toshiba laptop. Worked fine for a few months; but then I have been unable to solve the problem of Lightroom hanging when I try to import directly from my camera via USB. If I download pics from the camera using file manager, and then point LR at the new folder [once the camera is unplugged], it can then see the folder on the hard drive and will import them without issues. But if the camera is installed, going to the import screen hangs the application.
    I have tried:
    deleting the lock file
    installing and  running LR 5
reinstalling LR 4disabling all the usb drivers, rebooting, and enabling
disabling everything in the start menu
deleting the preferences file and letting LR build a new one..
I can import from the SD card reader, but I nervous about that as I have had card corrupted before and lost pics when downloading that way with other laptops.
The camera is a Sony NEX-5N.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

You must have Premier Elements that recognizes Videos.  Premier Elements is sometimes sold in tandem with Photoshop Elements so that both can operate seamlessly.
Amazon has got special price for buying both packages together.  I believe it is a difference of about $20, i.e. you pay 20 bucks more if you buy both products.

  • Macbook Pro Hangs when Changing locations

    Hello Everyone,
I have a Macbook Pro 2.16 running Leopard 10.5.1 and every now and then when I change network Locations from Wireless access point to anther (WPA Personal to WPA Enterprise or vice versa), the laptop simply hangs?! Mouse stops moving and nothing responds. I need to hold down the power button to restart the button. It's go em really worried as I have am using FileVault and crashing the box like this will like lead to corruption in the FileVault volume. Is anyone else experiencing this? Any suggestions? It's never happened to me in Tiger!
    Remy

I have wondered if VMWare fusion is involved simply because it sets up a lot of network devices.
VMWare isn't necessary for this to happen, since I've had it happen a few times to me, too, but I don't have any of the Windows stuff: Boot Camp, Parallels, or VMWare installed.
I think you're right that it's only when I switch from wireless to ethernet. I've had a couple of theories along the way, but each time it happens, things seem to be a bit different, so now I'm not sure.
One interesting thing is that at least once I did manage to get control of the machine (sort of) by logging in via SSH. Because I was in a hurry to get to work, I just shut it down using the Terminal. So I don't know if I could have gotten complete control by killing the login window, for example.
One thing I've noticed is that it seems to happen shortly after I've rebooted anyway. Yesterday morning I installed a security update and the new iTunes and QuickTime, which meant a reboot. And last night I got this hang when I was getting the computer ready to go to work today. But before I updated yesterday morning, the uptime was over 30 days. So it's not common for me.
I think, in another post, Gnarlodius mentioned only changing the location via the System Preferences and not having this problem. I may try that for a while.

  • Aperture 3.5.1 on OS X 10.9.2 hangs when trying to update the backup

Aperture 3.5.1 on OS X 10.9.2 hangs when trying to update the backup. I get the rotating beach ball cursor for hours but not get the confirmation dialog known from 3.4.2 aksing whether I really want to back up.
On old Mac Mini with OS X 10.6.8 and Aperture 3.4.2 there was no such issue.

Creating a new vault and populating it always works but then turning around and updating that vault hangs? The drive is formatted OS X Extended, correct?
That is strange. Before abandoning vaults, they should and do work in 3.5.1, I'd try this
Run a library repair on the library. I always do this now as it seems to cut down and hangs when updating a vault.
Before starting the vault update open the Aperture activity window Aperture->Window->Show Activity.
Now do the update.  I can't give you anything specific to look for, just try to get an idea of where the hang is happening (if it happens after the repair).
As for rsync, it should work OK but keep in mind as a lot of the data now in 3.5 is in database files any change to Aperture will result in reync seeing a lot of files has having been changed so I'm not sure now much of a savings that will be over just copying the library. To be honest I've never tried rsync on an Aperture library so this may not be an issue but something to keep in mind. BTW do you have much rsync experience? It can be a bit of a bear to setup if you're not familiar with it.
Another option is to look at one of the cloning programs Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. They have the ability to make clones and then update only the changes since the last clone operation. In reality, I believe one or both actually use rsyn as the backend but give you a much nicer way to set it up and schedule it.

  • How to preserve original size when converting to PDF in Preview.

I'm using Preview in Snow Leopard.
Trying to create multipage PDFs from document scans.
I'm finding that when the scanned image (tiff, png, jpg) is converted to PDF in Preview the size reduces.
Selecting 'View actual size' shows the image with sometimes drastically impaired quality.
This does not always happen. I have some images that stay the same size and quality.
What factors cause this reduction in size in some images but not in others?
I'm not sure but this could be only images that have been scanned by me. If so, what do I need to do to prevent the problem?
These are not large images, just standard size pages.
I have all the preferences to view at 100%
This is not for printing, only for viewing on-screen.

    Please!!
    I'm not silly...
As I said, selecting View actual size shows the image with sometimes drastically impaired quality (regardless of the window size).
I also said I have preferences set to view at 100%
It now seems as if this is only happening with scans I've made here.
Images downloaded from the internet are converting indentically, no problem. But my scans are being resized when converting.
I wonder if anyone with a bit of technical know-how can give me some clues as to why this is happening. It would seem to be something to do with the file itself.
(There was another post on here with the same problem but for some reason its been 'archived' though the last posting was this month and the query was not answered. So I've posted the question again.)

It's certainly not unavoidable because you can copy a file to your local drive, work on it there, and copy it back.
Yes, I know this is more of a pain than doing it directly.  It hampers the workflow.  All I can say is this:  Sometimes doing things the right way vs. the most convenient (but wrong) way is a little more difficult, but provides benefits.  Consider that if you utterly screw up and save the screwup to your local copy, you can always easily retrieve the copy on the server again and start over.
Hey, if it was up to me I'd make Photoshop robust enough to save to a server all day, but it's not.  Adobe says not to save to a server.  There's a reason they say that.

  • PS CC HDR toning in ACR then Converting to 16 bit major error!

So here's the deal - I'm an avid user of HDR and have always made my HDRs in photoshop (but tonemapped elsewhere).  Now, with the new tonemapping in ACR I can get great results - BUT - there's a BIG problem.
After I've created my HDR and toned it in ACR it opens in photoshop as a 32 bit file (with the camera raw adjustments showing as a filter).
    And it looks great.
BUT, when I try to make that a usable file by converting down to 16 or 8 bit - all that work goes to waste.
I've always used "exposure and gamma" to convert from 32 to 16 or 16 to 8 - that's the one we all know and love because it doesn't change anything as far as the image appearance.
However - with HDRs I create and tone in ACR:  Once I do this to convert to 16 bits using exposure and gamma (like always and touching nothing) - the image turns almost white - horribly washed out and lousy looking.  I've tried it every way I can think of.  I'll flatten the 32 bit file as to get rid of the acr smart filter, I've rasterized the layer, I've duplicated the document, I've tried merging and not merging - everything.  The preview that shows when I am about to convert 32 to 16 in exposure/gamma looks correct, but as soon as I do it - boom - washed out weird looking image.
    Other issue:
If I save a 32 bit psd after toning in ACR to work on later - it looks way different the next time I open it.  This happens whether I save the profile along with the file or not.  It opens darker, for the most part and I can never get back to how it was (and was unable to save as 32, 16, or 8 looking right!).
Last issue:  If I create a 32 bit hdr image but choose NOT to tone in acr and save it as a radiance file - if I open that radiance file later in photoshop and use the acr filter to tone it - again, it appears way different like a lot of data has been lost.  The image is usually a lot brighter, washed out, less colorful, and the pixels seem to not be able to bend very far in any direction.
Can someone please explain if I am doing something wrong??  Or if this is a bug??  I love the way the 32 bit images look once I've toned them - but that's the only time they'll look remotely like that!  Can't save, convert to 16 bit, or do doodly squat without the image drastically changing!

Ok!  Thank you everyone for taking the time to help me figure this out!  I appreciate it!
I have taken everyone's advice into consideration and tried everything suggested - watched every video - read every link - and here's where I'm at now.
There's some good news and bad news and just plain weird news.
I do have those profile settings enabled (always have) - and it does ask me if I want to embed, convert, or discard.
If I flatten a 32 bit toned image (to get rid of the acr filter) and save it as a 32 bit tiff - I can re-open that tiff with convert to working space on - and it looks the same.  I can ALSO convert that tiff to 16 bit and have it look a LOT closer to the original (nothing like the washed out ones).  That's good news!
However, if I save the 32 bit toned image with the acr filter still there as PSD - it will open washed out and crazy the next time I open it (using convert to working space - I've also tried every other option).  So - working on a 32bit toned in acr image again is still impossible after closing it without it looking all washed out.
ALSO - there is one section in color profile settings that is puzzling me and affects all of this in a major way.
Above the three boxes to check about profile mismatches and warnings - there are 3 settings
    RGB, CMYK, and Gray.
Now by default my RGB settings was RGB: Off
I know this is a weird issue because my working space is adobe rgb and the profile mismatch warnings are still on - so the same result happens when opening files.  And also by checking the include the working color profile with an image when you save it should achieve the same result as haveing RGB: Preserve Embedded Profiles on.  But there's a weirder area this causes a difference.
If I have that RGB setting OFF - and merge those 3 same images to hdr and then go to tone in ACR it looks really dark (not a problem it's a 32 bit hdr file - I use acr to make it look the way I want).  It's rich in color and seems to have loads of data and tone available to play with.
HOWEVER - if I start with that RGB setting to "Preserve embedded profiles" - then merge those same 3 images to hdr and then go to tone in ACR it looks entirely different.  It looks way less dark and contrasty, is very drained in color, and seems to have a lot less data to play with in terms of bringing out shadows or toning down highlights.
It's best for me to just show you a side by side - as I'm including here.  This is the same hdr created with no changes other than that one setting (shown in the image) being different before I merge to hdr.  (And the 32bit image that opens in ACR I have made zero changes to at the point of screen capture).
    Any ideas?
