HDTV -- HD DVD

I record HDTV programs over the air on to my Mac using EyeTV. I can easily demux these MPEG-2 transport streams (1080i and 720p), bring them into DVD Studio Pro, and author an HD-DVD which I burn to DVD-9 media (red laser dual layer).
However, sometimes I would like to downscale 1080i programs to 720p. The only way I have found to do this that DVD Studio Pro finds acceptable is to transcode the 1080i MPEG-2 to the Apple Intermediate Codec at 1280x720, and import the result into DVD Studio Pro and allow its encoder to convert back to MPEG-2 when I do a build. So, I have a solution. But, it's very time/resource intensive. Can anyone offer a better solution?

Hey Guys,
The thing I've found is that if your source TS file is 29.97 fps then I can demux it with MPEG Streamclip and the mpeg file imports just fine.
If the TS is 23.976 fps, then the demuxed file isn't supported.
I will be at the NAB show tomorrow thru Thursday, and I will be asking a bunch of questions when I get there.
Also, I can get the Dolby Digital audio to import, but when I burn a disc and play it back in my Toshiba HD-A1 HD DVD player, the audio is silent.
Anyway, I will update this when I get back.
Thanks for helping, and verifying what I have discovered.

  • New Toshiba HDTV with DVD

I recently pruchaed a new Toshiba HDTV with built in DVD. When I hooked it up to my Verizon Cable connection my cable remote will not control ON/OFF or VOLUME. I have to turn the tv on with the Toshiba remote and also use it to control the volume. How can I get my Verizon Cable Remote to control ON/OFF and Volume? Thanks  mdc/

You are using an external tuner (cable box) that is why volume adjustment using the cable's remote will not be applicable. Volume is part of the TV's settings. To control the TV's settings (Like the volume) you need to program the cable box remote (If applicable).

  • Create DVD menu in Photoshop - font show pixels

I googled and search this forum and feel not help me at all.
I created DVD menu in photoshop (CS4) for DVD Studio Pro 4. I selected Film & Video NTSC DV widescreen(SD). Export file as .tif. Create DVD. Font look pixel on HDTV. Is there a way to improve menu looks for HDTV even DVD final output is SD 16:9? Is there guideline?

When you go into Photoshop, make sure that you select a high def alternative to create your menu, not SD.
Create a new file, select Film and Video and look in the list for HDV 1080p or HDTV 1080p as a start point. If you use anything else, you won't get the resolution that you need for HD.

  • Export to DVD with Best Quality

I am wondering what is the best way to export a movie for burning to a DVD. I have two movies, each about 20 minutes long. Mostly consists of pictures set to music, with some video clips mixed in. Each movie will be burned to their own DVD (single layer). Will be showing the movies on an HDTV via DVD (Standard DVD Player with upconvert connected via HDMI).
I'm wrestling with the options of exporting as an MP4 file from Imovie, and then to a DVD, but I understand that is limited to 720 and I'm concerned about quality loss due to compression.
    OR
Export to Quicktime and then converting that to something which will go on a DVD (my understanding is that IDVD won't add a .mov file directly to a DVD).
I don't want to buy any other software if I can avoid it, so if there are freeware options outside of this that are simple to use, I'm open to other suggestions.

The best possible comes from exporting your movie as QT movie (NOT conversion) same settings, self contained (leave recompress all frames unchecked).
That will be your master and is ready to be used in Compressor for your mpeg2 and ac3 to send to DVDstudio.

  • Ps3 : hdmi to vga on dell lcd monitor

i recently bought a ps3 and the only place i can play it in is my dell monitor in my room. i bought a hdmi to vga cable and it didnt work and i tried holding the power button until 2 beeps. do i need a converter, new monitor or a new cable ? my monitor is dell e176fpf monitor.

The first reply was accurate.  HDMI (and DVI) are digital and VGA is analog.
There are many cords on Amazon and Ebay that claim they will work (its a scam, and a brilliant one at that).
you would need an active converter (if you want audio)

If you were able to convinve yourself/parents to spend a wee bit more money you'd be much happier with this.

  • What video settings should I select for 60m of video in iMovie

My gear: HDTV, DVD player that upconverts to 1080i, Canon HG10 HD camcorder
I record in HD. I have both an HDTV and a 4:3 standard TV. I don't have a Bluray player, nor do I want to invest in one at the moment.
I only need to record 60 minutes of video at a time to a single DVD.
Question: what settings in iMovie should I use to ensure the BEST video quality when I play back on my HDTV and DVD player that upconverts?

If you shoot 30p, ingesting 960x540 should be enough for your DVD output. If you use 60i, then importing and outputting at 1080i would be important to maintain 60Hz motion smoothness. (You shouldn't use stabilization or cropping while editing to avoid damaging 60i.) Then use MPEG streamclip or JES deinterlacer to resize 1080i 60 to 480i 60 to feed DVD authoring tool.
Or, you may want to use iMovie09 only as an importing tool for AVCHD video. Use imported movie (1080i AIC) in iMovieHD to edit movie and send it to iDVD, which will preserve 60i motion.

  • SB Audigy 2 ZS and Line in process

I recently bought a HDTV and since I'm low on cash, I wan to find a way to?use my current Klipsch ProMedia 5.'s as my surround sound for televised HDTV and dvd's (through Xbox 360). I've gone over several different senarios, and was curious if I could connect the pre processed analog RCA's from my cable box/360 to my SB audigy 2 ZS cards line in (through RCA -->min jack cord) and have the SB card proceess the 5. off that...is that possible?Ex. Cablebox/360 RCA ---> RCA/mini jack cord ---> SB audigy 2 ZS "Line in" ---> 5. processing ---> output to ProMedia's. Besides the obvious reasons off skipping the $600.00 - $000.00?on a new A/V reciever and speakers, I was planning on placing my computer next to my tv...running dvi from the vid card to the tv and using it for basically everything...cable.360..computer. Is this possible?Thx for the help.

It is possible but it won't be true 5., it will be a prologic-like processing, if you are OK with the CMSS upmixing then go ahead. For a true 5. solution you can get the DDTS-00 decoder, it allows you to switch your speakers from the PC to several digital sources.

  • MEGA180- Widescreen Video Driver?

I've been using my MEGA180 for ages now, with a stretched screen though, cos there's no widescreen resolution available in my video settings. Is there a driver update that will give me this option? What does everyone else do to get there windows to display properly on a widescreen TV?
Where can I download driver updates? The Windows 'Update driver' option recons it's already running the most up to date, but does that actually look online?
The video diriver (i'm guessing this is the same as any other 180), is NVIDIA GeForce4 MX Integrated GPU
    Your help much appreciated.

The key is Powerstrip.....   Here's a link.
    http://www.entechtaiwan.com/util/ps.shtm
There are quite a few guides to configuring powerstrip. Use google.  However Powerstrip is quite complicated to figure out. And I found that it doesn't ever seem to work exactly like the guides on the web say. However it is reasonably close. And the procedures depend on what physical connection you use  to attach your wide screen TV and on what forms of input your widescreen TV accepts.
I use the onboard Mega 180 graphics with the standard Nvidia drivers and Powerstrip software. I have a Norcent plasma HDTV. I attach it via VGA connector. My TV accepts 1080i, 720p, and 540i on the VGA connector. So I had to play around with powerstrip settings getting the pixels and frequency to match. Almost all TV's accept VGA resolution ... that is the starting point but it looks kind of crappy. Finding a combination of resolutions and frequencies that work, look readable, and fit on the screen becomes the real trick. I am able to generate 1080i signal with a resolution of 960 x 540. Text is quite readable at that resolution. And when I switch to HDTV or DVD input sources in fullscreen it switches to true 1080i HDTV 1720 x 1080.
It took me about a week of horsing around to get it set up just right. But once you get it right you really don't need to do anything after that.
    Good luck on your adventure.

  • Any difference in functionality between the two 802.11n models?

I plan on eventually having three airport extreme base stations in my house, in an 802.11n WDS network so I can stream HDTV and DVD movies between the many MythTV and XBMC machines on my network. My first AEBS is the MBxxx model, with the gig network ports. I just bought a second AEBS which was advertised as being the MBxxx model, but is actually the MAxxx model with the 10/100 ethernet ports. Awesome.
The only router I need to have gig ports is the one plugged directly into my backbone switch, so I could get away with the other two having 10/100 ethernet. What I'm wondering, though, is if there's any difference with the firmware between the two models. Will I lose any functionality by not having all MBxxx model routers, or run into any performance issues that are cleared up in the new models?
None of the AEBS's will be doing any routing; My Sonicwall will be doing that and my Windows server will handle giving out DHCP addresses to clients. Further, I plan on keeping an 802.11g router online (outside of the WDS network) so that older 2.4GHZ clients can use that network, keeping the Airport network 11n only. Am I ok to mix the older and newer AEBS's or should I keep the WDS ring MBxxx models only?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
Those 2 queries are not the same.  Depending on your data, Query A, may select more rows than Query B.
I don't have access to your table, so I'll give an example using the scott.emp table.
The following 2 queries are similar to your 2 queries:
    SELECT  deptno  -- Query A
    ,       job
    ,       sal
    FROM    scott.emp  m
    WHERE   deptno IN (
                          SELECT  sj.deptno
                          FROM    scott.emp  sj
                          WHERE   sj.deptno  = m.deptno
                          AND     sj.job     = 'CLERK'
    AND     deptno IN (
                          SELECT  ss.deptno
                          FROM    scott.emp  ss
                          WHERE   ss.deptno  = m.deptno
                          AND     ss.sal     > 1200
    SELECT  deptno    -- Query B
    ,       job
    ,       sal
    FROM    scott.emp  m
    WHERE   deptno IN (
                          SELECT  s.deptno
                          FROM    scott.emp  s
                          WHERE   s.deptno  = m.deptno
                          AND     s.job     = 'CLERK'
                          AND     s.sal     > 1200
The results of Query A are all 14 rows in the table, but Query B produces only the 3 rows from deptno=10.
Query A is looking for departments that have CLERKs, and departments that have sal>1200.  If one row in the department has job='CLERK' (no matter what the sal is), and another row has sal>1200 (no matter waht the job is), then that department meets both criteria.
Query B is looking for departments who have CLERKs whose sal is over 1200.  Both criteria must be met on the same row.

  • Can I create an iDVD slide show and keep the picture resolution high so the pictures will be HDTV quality or near HDTV quality for playback on a DVD player?

How do I create an iDVD slide show that does not compress the photos making them low-res? When I insert the iDVD I have made into a DVD player connected to an HDTV, the playback quality of the pictures are very low.  Is there a way to correct this when creatinf the iDVD?

  • So... I cannot watch movie on DVD on my HDTV?

With a cable from my MacBook to my HDTV, I can watch a movie on DVD or anything that I  to pull up the MacBook.  Now, unless I am wrong, I cannot use the setup Apple TV instead of the cable?   Reading over what Apple says about the Apple TV, I thought it would be possible to do this, but now, with the Apple TV setup, it looks like I am limited to what Apple wants me to see - YouTube, NetFlix, movies rented from iTunes and not too much more. Especially not TV shows that are on the Internet pages of TV stationss or DVDs.   That is a so big a surprise and disappointment because the cable is a a nuisance and did not carry the audio, which I had to use another cable or to speakers or use the MacBooks speakers. Did I read the product information completely wrong or what?
If I am all wrong with this, please tell me how to do this. Thanks.

    Yes and no.
AppleTV is limited in the formats it can play natively but very recent Macs (post 2011) running Montain Lion have the ability to Airplay the screen to the AppleTV - that still doesn't work for Apple's DVD player though as it won't mirror protected content.
You could try Airparrot (which has mixed reviews) to do Airplay in software.
VLC might allow Airplay of a DVD.
If you have non-protected video you could convert it to h264 format and add to iTunes, but we cannot discuss circumventing commerical DVD protection.

  • Hooked up hdmi to hdtv and get only audio and a "profiler" screen view; cannot play dvd on HDTV

Hooked up mini display port / HDMI to my TV and only get audio of DVD.  Do see original apple desktop image and image of selected  "window" display. cannot manipulate "window" menu. How do I get video and audion from DVD?

Funny things happen you are using an external display in mirroring mode. I generally avoid it. My preference is to set my MBP up to my monitor or HDTV with a wireless mouse and keyboard and use the laptop in lid shut mode.
If you've never done this, hook up a wireless mouse and keyboard and hook it up to your TV. Shut the lid of the MBP and after say 10 seconds hit the keyboard or wiggle the mouse. The laptop will now only be driving the external display so if you change your settings to that of the TV all should be good!

  • What kind of wireless bridge would work with Toshiba Regza HDTV & Toshiba Blu-ray DVD Player?

What will provide wi-fi to Toshiba DVD player connecting using an ethernet cable, giving an internet connection.

Thank you for this answer. I have another clarifying question for you as I am a wet behind the ears newbie at this. Does this mean that my 2 Wire DSL modem will be acting as the router that you mention? If yes, it would seem that this would also allow me to watch NetFlix movies from my computer on my Toshiba HDTV-correct possibly?

  • I am really frustrated - is it possible to view a DVD that is playing on my iMAC, on my HDTV through Apple TV??

I have been trying to figure out how to view a DVD movie that is playing on my iMAC, onto my HDTV through Apple TV... I am not getting the "conventional" Apple TV icon on my IMac Screen. I have the AirplayIt app ... Can anyone assist?

Firstly, not all Macs will do AirPlay mirroring.
AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). You can see which Mac you have and which operating system you are using by selecting 'About this Mac' from the Apple menu in the top left corner of your Mac and selecting the 'More Info' button.
Secondly, Apple's DVD application blocks AirPlay use for licensing reasons, you would need to use a third party DVD application such as VLC.

  • Is it possible to make a high res. DVD slide show that can be viewed with blue ray player/HDTV that retains high res. quality?

I have used PE 12 to make slide shows on DVD but the quality is just not there when I view on HDTV.  Is there a way to accomplish this using Premiere Elements and Photoshop Elements 12?

    salrgrl
Assuming that you are going to use the Elements Organizer Slideshow 12/12.1 as the sole builder of the slideshow and Premiere Elements 12/12.1 just for the burn to AVCHD on DVD disc....
    1. Before you start, open Premiere Elements 12/12.1 to its Expert workspace. Go to File Menu/New/Project and Change Settings.
In Change Settings, set the project preset to NTSC/DSLR/1080p/DSLR [email protected]. OK out of there.
In the New Project dialog that appears, rename the project and put a check mark "Force Selected Project Settings on This Project". OK out of there.
Minimize the program and do your Elements Organizer slideshow work.
    1. Build your slideshow in the Elements Organizer Slideshow Editor with photos with a 16:9 frame aspect ratio. If you can get away with pixel dimensions of over 1920 x 1080 and avoiding pre-cropping/resizing, then just make sure the frame aspect ratio = 16:9. If your photos are 3:2 or 4:3, then cropping to 16:9 before they get into the Elements Organizer. The question is whether the transfer from Elements Organizer to Premiere Elements is going to be influenced by photos oversized for the 1920 x 1080 16:9 project. If a problem, then we may have to back track and crop resize to 16:9 1920 x 1080. The photos are going to end up at 1920 x 1080 away in encoding.
Please go with the Crop to Fit Slide as shown in the screenshot - will not compromise the goal here.
    2. When you are ready to send the Elements Organizer Slideshow to Premiere Elements for the burn to AVCHD on DVD....
    a. Save the slideshow as a Slide Show Project to the Elements Organizer.
    b. In the Elements Organizer, select the slideshow's Slide Show Project thumbnail, and then Share Menu/Burn Video DVD/Blu-Ray.
    c. When you do that, your slideshow will be in a Movie Menu/Publish+Share areas of the program which has the pre-set manually wanted project preset.
The workflow choice was made since your intention was to use Premiere Elements just for the burn to AVCHD on DVD disc.
    3. Publish+Share
    Disc
    AVCHD
    with Presets =
The presets is going to be the one that will give you the best results.
    First, look at Presets = H.264 1920 x 1080pNTSC Dolby....the one with the 23.976 progressive frame rate.
    Second, look at Presets = H.264 1920 x 1080iNTSC Dolby...the one with the 29.97 interlaced frame rate.
The first choice in this particular case was made to be consistent with the Premiere Elements project preset
that you set manually at the beginning to
    NTSC/DSLR/1080p/DSLR [email protected].
And, that was done since there are many reports that this project preset results in sharper images in the burn to products when
all photos are involved in the slideshow.
Please review and consider, and then we can decide if the above looks like it going to meet your expectations for viewing.
    Thanks for considering the above.
