HDTV resolution question

Hi gang,
My HDTV can display 1080i and 720p. Technically speaking, should one be better than the other? I plan to do some head-to-head comparisons with various video and picture sources, but I was wondering if there was a well-established "preferred" mode.
Cheers!

Hey, Phil...
1080i has more lines for higher resolution and is interlaced... 720 less and progressive scan. Most don't have a choice. They usually have one or the other. If it were me, I would choose 1080i because there is more picture information. Then again, it also depends on the source format and the compression. If the data isn't there for 1080i then you will probably default over to 720.

  • Another resolution question.....sorry

Thanks to Zac and Bogie for helping me out with the whole resolution questions but I do have one more....sorry. Do I need to log and capture in FCP in order to import the file into compressor to change the codec or is there another way? Maybe direct from the camera so it doesn;t get any more compressed than it is?
Thanks again for putting up with me
    Rick

If you shot on DV, for example, capturing it isn't compressing more. It is what it is. You shot it DV, it is DV. What's on the tape isn't "better" than what gets captured to your hard drive.
Anyway, yes, you have to capture or ingest the footage or have some sort of existing movie file to put it into Compressor. You can't take it from the camera directly.

  • Replacement MBP; resolution questions

My previous MBP (17" 2010-ish model) died a week or so back and I'm now in the process of looking into a replacement. I do have some questions I'd like someone to help me out on, all mostly resolution related.
So the first few are related to old software:
I have Photoshop/Premiere Pro CS5.5, which Adobe seems to have given me the finger over in regards to resolution compatability because it's not CS6 or above. Without having seen a Retina Display MBP running any CS5 software (and I'm unlikely ever to at this point) I'm unaware of how atrocious it supposidly looks running on such a machine. How bad/acceptable does it look on a Retina Display MBP? Slightly fuzzy or downright horrid?
Are there any third party plugins or software to bring it Retina support? Same questions applied to Office 2011 and stuff like Google Chrome. How a Retina Display MBP treats my old software is the biggest deal breaker as to whether I simply buy a Retina Display or pre-Retina Display model. I'm not interested in upgrading to CS6 simply because Adobe clearly hates their older customers.
    Hardware:
IF the answers to the above are "no" or "you'll have to upgrade your software" and I went ahead and acquired an older Macbook Pro, for this example a 2011-12 15" (even refurbished) model at a 1680x1050 resolution, how does this affect output to an external screen?
Can the external screen display a 1920x1080/20 resolution on a system without a native 1920x1020 resolution like the 17" model did? Using the example machine's native resolution when using it by itself is not a problem for me, but not being able to get the desired external resolution when it's connected to another screen is.
I'd very much appreciate it if someone could help me out here. I don't want to pay a ton of money for something that doesn't apply to the above.

Your replacement came out of a warehouse not off the assembly line.

  • Image size and resolution question.

Is an image at W 48.667 x H 32.444 inches at 72 res the same as an image that I could convert in photoshop to 300 res and then the with "Resample Image" clicked off would be W 11.68 x H 7.78 at 300 res for printing purposes? I'm asking this questions because after exporting 200 images from Lightroom 1.4, putting them into an wedding album I realized the images were not at 300 res but the first size listed above. I'm trying not to have to rebatch and have to put them back into the album. I sent the question to NAPP and got this back"
"If you do the math you'll see that the answer is "no."
    48x72=3456 pixels; 32x72=2304 pixels
    11.68x300=3504 pixels; 7.78x300=2334 pixels."
I did the math and it comes up to 5760 vs 5830. Pretty darn close. So would an image printed out with both settings print the about the same quality or am I missing something?
    Thanks
    Bob

Bob's question is a common one. And one of the first that most of us struggled to understand. Let's see if I can shed some light to help clarify the matter.
o The image starts out with a given number of pixels from the camera, scanner, or whatever was its source. The resolution only matters when it comes time to print the image.
72 dpi was once a common resolution for displaying on a computer monitor. Today 90 dpi is more common monitor resolution.
o Let's assume that the image is 3504 x 2336 pixels (which I got from his size @ 72 dpi).
o In "image size", if you do _not_ have 'resample image' checked, all you are doing is _rescaling the image. The image resolution is whatever you enter ...
For example, if you enter 360 dpi -- the native printing resolution of many Epson printers -- you get a print size of 9.733 x 6.489 inches
o Let's say you want to print this image at 360 dpi in portrait on 13 x 19 inch paper with a one inch border on the sides. That would make the short dimension of the image 11 inches and the long would work out to 16.5.
To do that you need to _resample_ the image to change the size. More pixels will be made. The resolution stays at 360 dpi. So check the 'resample image' box.
After resampling to get the print size and resolution you want, the pixel dimension goes to 5960 x 3960 (from 3504 x 2336). Those new pixels came at a price, but that is a matter for another thread and a lot of personal bias.
    Hope that helped.
P.S. The answer to your question, Bob, is yes. With resample off in PhotoShop, your original images should have gone to 11.68 x 7.787 inches @300 dpi.
In looking at the rest of your original post, it seems that the export didn't work the way that you wanted. Do I read right that the images turned out to be 11.68 x 7.787 @ 72 dpi? Can't help with that as I don't do Lightroom.

  • Laptop to HDTV / resolution problem

When I hook my laptop up to my hdtv and startx, X starts at a wrong resolution, how would I go about fixing this?

You could try out xrandr or lxrandr (a really nice frontend) to set the proper resolution.
    A simple
xrandr --output LVDS --auto --output HDMI-0 --auto
worked for me. Get the right outputs by running xrandr without any parameters.

  • HDTV Resolution not supported, Desktop lost

I connected a HDTv to my G4. The image was great but circles were ellipses. I changed the resolution several times but one lost everything on the panel. It looks like a dark curtain. Changing the sets mode to a different input and then coming back shows part of the desktop. It is stretched and very low in resolution. The mouse and keyboard do not function.
The television has been tried on two computers, both with ATI cards. This sequence of steps reocurrs with both DVI and analog, VGA, ports and cables. The PRAM has been zapped with no result. Yasu has been run.
The old monitor still works fine when reconnected. The TV monitor works fine with the Tiger install disk.
Is there anyway to clear the computers memory and get this monitor working.

The settings associated with moniors can be found in preferences files (.plist) that also have the name "windowserver" in them. If you search on the term windowserver you should find at least two occurances. One will be com.apple.windowserver.plist and one will be com.apple.windowserver.xxxxxx.plist where the Xs will be some random string of characters and numbers. If you trash those files, it should be like starting over with the TV.

  • HDTV Resolution and WMV format

How do I export my HDTV Composition to a wmv format using presets. I tried to render with presets but I get a message "After Effects:AEGP Plugin Media IO Plugin:

What exactly are your composition settings and what preset do you intend to use? This warning is usually coming up, if there is incorrect pixel aspect ratios and resolutions somewhere...

  • HDTV resolution compatibality with MacBook

    Hi,
I am trying to buy a HD Ready TV which also has a VGA input but wondering if i'll get my macbook resolution (1280 * 800) as the tv's is 1366 * 768.
actually hoping for higher resoultions when connected to the tv - atleast 1080i (otherwise whats the point in getting a big display)
can anyone give any idea on this? because most the the hd ready (720p) tv's come in that (1366 * 768) resolution... does it mean thats the max i can get plugging the macbook.
    many thanks

Many HDTVs that have 1366 x 768 native resolution will accept 1080i input and process it and scale it down to 1366 x 768. That might work from a Mac but can be very dependent on the brand and model of TV.
There isn't really much point in running 1080i into a TV with that resolution. Most of the extra detail will be missing since the screen can't render it. Ideally you would want to run the TV at it's native resolution of 1366 x 768.

  • Random external monitor (HDTV) resolutions

Prior to the 10.5.6 update, I had no problems with connecting (VGA) my MacBook to my 27" HDTV at a resolution of 1366x768. No black bars, no distortion, no problems. To assist in my case, let's just say, I had wallpaper "A" for my MB screen and wallpaper "B" for the HDTV.
But ever since getting the update, I sometimes get another wallpaper background which we can call as "C". Another problem. The resolution changed from 1366v768 to 800x600. I couldn't find my default tv resolution anymore other than 1024x768 and a host of others. The closest one was 1280x768 which would leave black bars on the sides. The display prefs window calls it "Display" instead of the TV name.
However sometimes it works like how it used to and you can tell because:
    1. The wallpaper is switched to "B" which was how I had originally set it up.
    2. The resolution is 1360x768 and covers the full screen.
    3. The display window in Sys Prefs shows it with the TV name instead of a generic "Display" tag.
Anyone out there who can help? Seems like Mac OS X uses some kind of a monitor profile but it's driving me nuts.
Thanks in advance for your comments and suggestions.

Forgot to add this but I also did a PRAM/NVRAM reset holding the CmdOpt+PR. Sound settings defaulted but no change in the TV resolution.
I tried a safemode login but still no luck with the HDTV.

  • MBP/HDTV Resolution Mismatch

Hi all, long time lurker here.
I'm having a problem (obviously) getting my mbp (purchased june 2011) to connect to my shiny new insignia hdtv.  i've got a thunderbolt to hdmi that's working swimmingly, i've been able to get the sound out of the external speakers.  so far so good.
but.  my mbp runs at 1680x1050, and my tv apparently doesnt, so when i mirror my displays i lose some off the top and bottom (the menu bar and an oomph off the top, about the same off the bottom) and i've got black bands on the left and right side of the tv display.  how do i match my resolutions? i can't figure this out...

The manual may say that only lower resolutions are supported - but I am having great success with a different model.
My LC-37D90U (via DVI) connects at 1080p. (1920x1080p)
I have the 'View Mode' set to 'Dot by Dot.' At first I didn't - and I thought I was going to have to mess with one of the display config utilities. Have you tried configuring the digital input option for the DVI port? I had another Sharp which gave you the option to select the input signal. This helped out too. My old model was the LC-37D7U.
    Hope this helps...

  • IPhoto book - resolution questions

What resolution should I use to scan in my printed 4x6 photos to get the best result from iPhoto book? Is 300 ppi sufficient, or should I use 400 or higher? Don't want to scan higher than needed since the files are quite large. Don't know what the resolution is of the printer used by Apple.
Also, is it still the case that I should make sure photos are first cropped to 4x3 for best results? I have the latest version of iLife 5.
    Thanks for advice!
    Tara

Jeff - thanks so much for your reply - very helpful. I'm scanning them all in at 600 dpi to give me options of printing some large.
Another question - does anyone have experience with making photo albums from other programs/services? Are they all about the same in terms of quality? From the few I've checked out, they all look pretty much the same (as advertised) so I'm guessing they are using similar printers/processes and that quality would be about the same. In which case, I can go ahead and be confident that even though I will use iPhoto book because I am a die-hard Mac user and iPhoto is so easy to use, I'm not losing out on a better quality book that might be available through another software/service.
Thanks again for advice - can't wait to make my first iPhoto album of pre-digital camera baby pics for my now 6-year old. I made one for my boss last year that came out great but all the pics came from digital cameras.

  • Which HDTV resolution

Not sure where to post this one so I'm going to copy and paste and try a couple of forums and hopefully I can get a quick answer.
Thing is, I ordered a new TV today (arrives Saturday), a Pioneer 436SXE, but I'm now wondering whether to go back to the store and swap it for an LG 50PX4D.
Reason being that the resolution of the pioneer is 768 x 1024, which seems a bit strange since 720p HD TV is 720 x 1280. Now it may well be that the conversion is seamless but it seems a bit pointless to me.
So I'm all ready to go back to the store, after all the LG is 50" against the pioneers 43" and the res. is WXGA (1366x768).
The down side is that the LG is £ 200 more, doesn't have a digital sound processor (but I'm not a super quality audio guy anyway) and apparently blacks are blacker on the pioneer.
However, just as I've about decided on the LG, I consider the output of the mac mini I want to connect to it with a HDMI connector/switch. I assume the mini has a 768x1024 output, which ties up very well with the pioneers screen at 768x1024.
So now I am completely undecided, and if I'm going to change the order, I really need to do it tomorrow.
Questions I have are that I assume the pioneer will work well with the mac mini, but what about the LG. I'm sort of guessing that the TV will resize the output from the mac mini, but how will it look, will my picture get stretched or can I rely on the TV using different sized pixels and it simply being down to aspect ratio which I believe is 16:9 for both TV's. Or will the output from my mac mini simply use up 768x1024 pixels on the LG and leave the rest black.
Anyone with any input please provide it, as I say I need to decide soon.

Got the 50" Plasma and a 17"MBP, guess I'll just get the cable and see how it works, before committing to the mac mini.

  • IPhone resolution question

Hi, i have some folios in the normal ipad resolution 1024x768 and i want to change now to iphone 5/6 resolution
    couple questions:
    - is 1136x640 the correct resolution for that?
    - how do you usually/whats the best way to resize/change resolution on each article to that resolution?
    Thanks

If you create an 1136x640 folio, it will show up on iPhone 5 and later but not iPhone 4s and earlier.
I think the easiest approach is to use the Alternate Layouts feature in InDesign. But keep in mind that the 1024x768 layout converted to an 1136x640 layout would most likely be too small for the iPhone. To maintain the same SD scale, consider creating an alternate layout that's 50% scale (568x384).

  • Export resolution and camera resolution question

I am thinking of buying a new camera- specifically one that will film video in widescreen as well as widescreen photo's. I have been looking at some that have a maximum video resolution of 848x480, which will come out fine.
With iMovie, so far I have been using my wife's Casio camera which records video at 640x480 (4:3 ratio), and I have been cropping the video in iMovie and exporting as 640x360 widescreen. The next resolution up from 640x360 in iMovies export settings is 960x540.
My question is, if my new camera has a video res of 848x480, when I export that in iMovie, will it have to be down-scaled to 640x360, or will there be an option to export at the same resolution (I don't think it will let me upscale it to 960x540)?
    Thanks.

As long as you don't have "constrain" checked, it won't resample.

  • Scanner resolution question related to idvd slideshow

I would like to scan 35mm slides for an eventual iDVD slideshow. I have plenty of storage space.
    1. Would a 1200 dpi scan be good enough for an eventual slideshow to replay
    on an HDTV?
    2. What slide file format is best, e.g., pdf, tiff, jpeg
    3. Do I need to do anything special to have the 16:9 aspect?
    Advice would be appreciated.

No, I didn't use those numbers. I used some higher
number but kept the 16:9 ratio, e.g., 720 dpi was 935
x 527. Apparently, not the right thing to do.
That should be fine if you are creating a NTSC DVD - you are working in NTSC and NOT PAL aren't you?
As far as 72 verse 1200. I didn't try anything lests
than 720 dpi for my scan. I guess I thought
(probably wrong) that higher resolution would be
    better for hdtv.
So, if I use the number you mentioned (per Apple) I
should see the entire screen filled on the hdtv
playback? And is there a point at which increasing
the dpi for the initial scan doesn't help the final
    resolution that much?
Unless you are working with the 'Ken Burns' pan and zoom effect for still images in iMovie, the size listed in the Apple document is all you need.
As far as "should see the entire screen filled on the hdtv playback?" goes, you need to have set your set top DVD player correctly to do this - I know this was an issue when iDVD 6 first came out.
