HDTV Setting CS5
Hi there
i just got a new Camcorder (Sony HDR-CX 155) that shoots images in 1080p quality. I'm new to the CS 5 (but i've used CS3 a while ago) and I don't know what settings to set up when opening a new project. I want to cut a video in 1080p without losing any quality from importing or rendering.
Anyone out there who can help me with the Presets?

When you create a new project you are presented
with a menu of sequence settings to choose from.
You can skip this step by hitting "Cancel", then import your media
and create the type of sequence that best suits your footage.
This 'drag and drop' shortcut is just that... a shortcut.
It does not always work perfectly in all circumstances.

No HDTV Setting in Final Cut Pro 7?
I've been given a couple of EOS 7D clips to edit so I was trying to set up my project for 1920x1080 when I noticed that my pre-sets don't offer that option. The closest I can get is 1440x1080. Looking online, I see everyone with an HDTV option in the pulldown but I don't seem to have it.

Thanks.Don't know as I don't use it. I use Magic Bullet Grinder to transcode the DSLR files into Pro Res, then ingest the transcoded files into FCP7.
Must be out there somewhere, maybe you can find a Canon support group -
But the basic FCP7 workflow for DSLR clips is:
Easy Set Up not relevant as Easy Set Up is for tape based acquisition.
Transcode DSLR files into editable format ( Pro Res, Pro Res LT, etc).
Import transcoded files into FCP7 project. Make new sequence.
Edit a transcoded file into the timeline of your new sequence, FCP7 will ask if you want your sequence to match your source footage, say yes.
Edit and delver as usual.

Edit prefference can't be set tp Photoshop CS5
I recently upgraded from Lightroom 3 to 4. I have Photoshop CS5 installed as well. After upgrading to Lightroom 4 I am unable to set CS5 as the application for the edit in feature. Photoshop elements is now the default. How do I change this back?
Where did you choose to download the install files too? If it is still extracting the download then the DMG file is not complete which is why you are running into this issue. Once the download is complete the Adobe Download Assistant will automatically launch the installer to install Photoshop. Depending on the location chosen to save the download the Adobe Download Assistant may have difficulties saving the install files.
Alternately you can also follow the directions at http://forums.adobe.com/thread/981369 to download the install files directly. -
Macbook pro to hdtv - Cant fit screen properly

i connected my macbook pro to my 42 panasonic plasma tv, and worked perfectly, even sound (using dvi to hdmi adapter), but im having this little issue, which is, the screen does not fit perfectly, im always missing the upper bar and ive read i could use the "underscan" option, but when its in mirror mode, its greyed out (means i cant play with it). Now, when i uncheck mirror mode (so both laptop and tv screen are active) then i am able to use underscan, but my idea is to use mirror mode only. Any idea how to solve this? Its not a problem on the tv's side, already played with all kind of configs without luck, so i just wonder why underscan is not enabled
any help will be appreciatedBy design, most TV sets are designed to overscan -- that is they zoom the image slightly, so that you don't see artifacts that appear at the edges of the image. Most HDTV sets have a means to disable this feature. On Samsung sets, for example, it's called "Just Scan". This is probably what "Underscan" means for your Panasonic set.
If you are in mirrored mode and the resolution of the Mac isn't set to the same as the native resolution of the display (either 1920x1080 for a 1080p set, or 1280x720 for a 720p set), you can't disable the overscan. You need to set the Mac's resolution to that of the TV. The Mac display will be distorted as a result. -
Encore CS5 will Only Burn One DVD At A Time
Hello All , I am having a problem that I didn't have with CS4 ,If I set CS5 to burn more than one DVD it shows a hardware error after the first one , If I set CS5 to burn one DVD it works every time I only burn at 8X .This is not a major problem because it doesn't take much longer to burn them one at a time
but it would be nice to know why .

KevinThank's for your suggestion but I have always set CS4 to burn say 10 DVDs and just change the media when prompted (only 10 days ago) in CS5 this doesn't work only the first one will burn , I am sure there is nothing wrong with my hardware is works flawlessly with all other software.

Hi All,
CS5 (which I nought in a bundle with Adobe After Effects etc) crashed on me 7 times yesterday and twice today for no reason that I can think of. All the crashes have happened when I am performing different tasks and sometimes even when I'm saving.
I have also noticed that sometimes, after I have flicked through the display options using the 'F' key, the bounding window isn't displayed properly (ie the border that displays the image name and image size etc). I've found that when I make the image 'Fit On Screen' it doesn't draw the image unless I flick through all the display options. This has only started to happen in the last couple of weeks and, if I do it enough times, will cause a crash.
Also, when I use Liquify, I ALWAYS get an error saying that 'The operation could not be completed. There is not enough memory.' However, if I click ok, I can carry on using the tool but very very slowly. (I'll give my system spec at the end which will show you why this is un-warrented.)
I also find that the brushes can sometimes crash CS5 as well as transforming.
What's going on here? Is there a specific way to set CS5 up that I don't know about? I'm freelance and each crash costs me time, money and could make me miss deadlines!
I've installed the recent CS5 update but this has had no positive effect on the number of crashes I get.
My system spec is:
Mac Pro
OSX 10.6.8
6-Core Intel Xeon (duel)
2.93 GHz
16GB RAM
I have a 1TB hard drive dedicated as a scratch disk
ATI Radeon HD 5870 card
Please could someone guide me as why this is happening and how I can resolve this problem.

Thanks for getting back to me on this. It's been very frustrating recently because I've got mad deadlines to meet. Sorry, I should have stuck a 'my' in the subject title! I know CS5 is powerful and relatively bug free.
So the report I pated above was from the dialog box that pops up after the crash. Do you need more specific info about my video card? I've pated that info below.

Hello all,
I'm running FCP 6.0.6 on an iMac 2.66 (4 GB ram), and working with ProRes transcoded footage from AVCHD (Canon HF-10). I've had no problems with this setup and am quite happy with it.
I decided to connect my 26" HDTV to my iMac via an Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter. The video I get is incredible, but the performance while running FCP is horrible - lots of stuttering video and freezing video.
Is there something I'm missing? A setting? Is my iMac not powerful enough to drive my HD set? I hear of people running HDTV sets from MBP's all the time.
Any help would be appreciated...

I've got the iMac most recently released (just before the Intel one just announced). Basically, I've got some HD content on here which I can play with VLC media player, and I own a HDTV. I want to mirror what's on my iMacs screen on the HDTV, and I want it so I don't really lose any quality (i.e. it will still be high def on the screen). Also I want the sound to go out to my Amp.
My HDTV has a HDMI and Component ports, so what lead do I need from the iMac to the HDTV, and what lead do i need to get sound to my Amp (presumably from the headphone socket?!). As I don't have a VGA port on my TV, would the Apple VGA Display adapter be necessary, and then buy a VGA-HDMI/Component so it works (if one's available).
I'd really appreciate any help on the matter. Also would it look as good on my TV as it does on the iMac?Hello James,
you want the same thing as I do. Here is what you need:
If your iMac is one without built in camera (ie. one of the first series) you want to try a Mini-VGA to DVI Adapter which can be bought at apple. You then need an DVI to HDMI adapter which is available in any given bigger department store that sells HDTV sets.
If your iMac is one with built-in camera I think the output already is a Mini-DVI, so I would guess there is an adapter from Mini-DVI to HDMI. Check with your local Apple dealer. They should know.
But: Your TV has to be able to handle the resolutions of your iMac. I tried the same with my Panasonic Beamer (but via component) - no luck. Best I get is a distorted picture in 640 x 400 (which is not exactly what we need here). The "Monitor" control panel lets you chose from many different ones, but none of them matched my beamer and I haven't found a way to add new resolution.
So: If there's somebody that can help here - get the tips on!
The better your TV matches/handles the iMac video signal the better will the picture quality be. An example: Let's say your TV is a real HDTV with 1920 x 1080 (lucky bas**ard!) then you may set the resolution to this in the monitor control panel (this resolution does exist) and you may enjoy LOTR extended version in full shiny brightness (if you have an HDTV copy of the movie

Seem to have lost CS5 as main editor
I recently got hold of the Nik collection as PS plugins and loaded them into CS5 32bit. I then set CS5 32bit up as the second external editor in LR3 having previously had CS5 64 bit set itself up as the automatic main external editor. This set up had worked with CS4 64bit and CS4 32 bit in various installations of LR2.x.
Since doing this I can no longer access CS5 64bit as the right-click "Edit in Photoshop" option and have lost all the "Export to HDR Pro" etc options.
I noted from previous posts that a re-install of LR was suggested and I've done this , but only the repair option. Do I now need to completely uninstall and re-install LR3.

Do a reinstall of CS5, this will reinstall the files the uninstaller dutifully removed when you uninstalled the older verson.

I have a Panasonic Viera TC-32LX85 42" HDTV that I have been wanting to use with my Mac Pro. I am connecting the desktop to my display with a DVI to HDMI cable from Belkin.
The native resolution is 1366 x 768 and in Leopard this resolution was not available. I was not able to find a resolution/overscan combination to make the desktop fill the screen of my HDTV, it would either have a black border all the way around, or would cut off the screen edges. The former would have been live-able but the graphics never really seemed that crisp.
I saw that Snow Leopard was going to have support for HDTV displays, so of course I was excited and waited patiently. Now that I have Snow Leopard installed, I see options for HDTVs and by default 720p was selected. Problem is, I am still having the exact same problem as before... 720p & no overscan has a black border, and 720p & overscan cuts off the edges. I don't quite understand why this is happening, I assumed that a "proper" HDTV setting would full my screen perfectly.
Any help or advice on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

You have the option of installing and using a system hack or just putting up with a bad display. -
I cannot get a full screen display with the above TV (Model no.: 32PF9966) even after installing SwithResx. It has 1366 * 768 resolution. I would like to know if anybody using the same TV or similare Philips LCD TV with 1366*768 sucessfully achieve a full screen display. Thanks.

I noticed from your signature line, you're running Mac OS X 10.2.X. You'll need to upgrade to 10.4.X series before using the Philips HDTV set. The display drivers in 10.4.X will properly feed the right video signals. All you need is the DVI to HDMI adapter.

I have a Samsung LCD HDTV.
My iMac is in same room but I would like to connect my Alu iMac to it.
What adapter and cable do I need to buy to reach between iMac & TV ?Samsung sets come with a variety of inputs, the type and number of which are dependent on the model of set, so there's no specific answer without knowing the model number (and date of manufacture). The following inputs are founds on various models of Samsung HDTV sets: composite video, CATV, component video, SVGA, HDMI, and DVI. If you are using one of their sets with CableCard, you may also have a FireWire input. Your Mac has a mini-DVI output.
To connect your Mac to your TV, you will need to determine which inputs your TV has, and then which ones you are going to use to connect other devices (for example, connecting your cable box and DVD player to your set). Once you've figured out which inputs aren't already spoken for, you need to decide which you want to use for your. In order of quality: HDMI > DVI > SVGA > component > composite > CATV.
Once you've worked that out, you need to purchase the appropriate adapter (mini-DVI to whatever format you decided on), and possibly a cable (the adapters tend to be a about 6-inches long, not enough to reach). HDMI and CATV include the audio, so for those you'll want to make sure the adapter includes an additional cable that connects to the Mac's audio jack. For the others, you want a separate audio adapter to connect to the audio inputs associated with the video connector on the set. It should be noted that there are a small number of Samsung sets that have a separate audio-in associated with an HDMI port, specifically for the case where you are hooking up a computer.

Situation: I hate Comcast. I have a new LCD HDTV that has a built in HD tuner and now I can pick up all my local HD channels with only basic cable! Score! $14.99/mo! Sweet. NOW HERE IS THE ISSUE: If I do this, I will not be able to pick up HD on my old Mitsubishi 1080i HDTV (set up in my home theater, no HD/digital tuner and has component video input only).
I plan on putting Miglia TVmini HD on my iMac core 2 to pick up the HDTV, very nice and easy! I am thinking, instead of buying a stand-alone HDTV tuner for the Mitsubishi, I would hook my iMac to it as a secondary display. HOW would I make a video connection from the iMac to the Component video of the Mitsu? Second Q, what about the audio for my bose system? Any thoughts?????Hi kwandrews,
Connecting your iMac to your TV shouldn't be a problem.
You need a mini DVI > DVI adapter (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=6C0 4E07A&nplm=M9321G%2FB), a DVI > Component adapter (like this: http://sewelldirect.com/dvivideoadapter.asp) and a Component video cable (like this: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=149 730D6&nplm=TL953LL%2FA).
I am unshure of what resolutions you will be able to feed your TV with, however. Maybe someone else has a similar setup that can share more info.
Audio isn't a problem either. Your iMac has a analog/digital combined audio output. Depending on wether your Bose system can take a digital toslink or an analog signal, you could use this: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=6C0 4E099&nplm=TA968LL%2FA or any minijack > RCA cable, really. Analog cables won't support surround sound, though.

Globally set "float" for my windows... and Skins?
I really liked how PS would allow me to open up any .psd etc, in it's own floating window, so I could select then drag an image from one doc to the other.
Cant do that with the default settings in CS5...but I've found a way to 'force' that for each doc I open AFTER I open it via the top nav bar icon to enable the float for that doc...
IS there a way to globally set CS5 to only ever open any PS doc with that already set to the float window setting?
Can't find it so far...but surely that must exist, right?
RE: my subject item on Skins...the overall "gray-ness" of the CS5 GUI gets me down...I also can not find out how to "skin" the gray away....can you?
Jimhuge 27" HP that is powered by a nVidea card...absolutely great look/feel and the workstation powering same is a great Dell box.
that said, it's not the monitor, nor the ambient light here at the office..it's the dang all gray look that bugs me the most...then the poor contrast tween the type on that gray...then the overall gray top bar too...
just too too gray for me. if this continues to bug me, I'll just go back to CS3....dont need any of the new features in CS5....and the 'comfort' of using an interface that is easy to use is more imp to me than being "current" with versions ever would be...
can't be alone on this either as I've read many many threads on this - just google for this and you'll see many think same as me....an app should be
transparent in it's GUI usage....not a hindrance...

CS5 and Lightroom 3 printing differently
I have recently upgraded Lightroom to v3.0 and took advantage,at the same time, to upgrade my CS3 to CS5.
I printed something from CS5 and was very dissapointed in the result. The printed result was much too dark. I recalibrated my printer, using Spyder3 print, for the printer/ink/paper combination I was using. I reprinted with the same results (much too dark). I have set CS5 to manage colour and selected the newly created profile and switched colour management off in the printer driver (Epson R2400).
I then tried printing the same image from within Lightroom 3. I set the profile to the same as used in CS5 and set colour management off in the printer driver. In both cases the rendering intent was set to Relative. This printed almost perfectly. Perhaps a little darker than on-screen but the colour rendering was fine.
To give you an idea as to how different the results are I took a picture of the screen with LR3 and CS5 showing the same image and with their respective prints propped below.
Any ideas what the problem might be?

NormanI have the same problem with CS5, but I don't have LR to compare it to. CS5 prints are much darker than displayed on monitor. Photoshop manages colors. Epson R1400. Monitor calibrated with Pantone Huey. Colors are accurate - just darker than screen. My everyday Canon MP640 shows same results, so I suspect the problem is tied to the display. Any hints?
