HDV 1920x1080 footage in FCE 3.5 ~ UNRENDERED~

I very much apologize if this has been addressed before, but I need to figure this out now and I've spent hours searching! :'(
I am trying to edit HDV footage (shot 1920 x 1080) in Final Cut Express 3.5. (I added the mpeg-2 plugin for QT available from Apple.)
Since FCE 3.5 only supports 1440 x 1080, I guess I should convert my footage to 1440 so that I can work without having to render every single time.
Please tell me what steps to take! I have Streamclip and could convert them in that. I tried converting them to 1440 x 1080 (4:3), and they look fine in FCE, but they are still unrendered.
I thank you with all my heart to someone who can help me. Thank you!!

Hey Tom,
Oh, I see about the 1920 being the display format. That makes sense now.
Someone else (in Japan) shot and captured this into FCP. That is why it has the FCP HDV codec on it. They sent me a hard drive of the captured files. Of course I couldn't use the HDV codec until I got the mpeg-2 codec add-on for QT.
Yes, *if I render*, I can see/hear the footage just fine in FCE. This is what the clip properties say in FCE:
Vid Rate: 29.97 fps
frame size: 1440x1080
compressor: HDV 1080i60
data rate: 3.1 MB/sec
pixel aspect: HD (1440x1080)
Anamorphic: +[this space is blank]+
Field Dominance: (Odd)
Alpha: None/Ignore
Composite: Normal

  • Mix 1440x1080 with 1920x1080 Footage in FCE?

Last week I accidentally shot footage in 1440x1080 16:9 instead of 1920x1080 16:9. The rest of my footage is in 1920x1080 16:9. Can I combine both formats in FCE and create a 1920x1080 movie?
    Thanks!

The HDV specification is 1440x1080 interlaced displayed as 1920x1080. Or 1280x720 non-interlaced. Some manufacturers thought they'd be smart and make the camera shoot 1920x1080 interlaced and sell it as better resolution. The AVCHD spec supports both, but as FCE only supported the original HDV spec it doesn't include the 1920 specification for AVCHD.

  • Trouble getting footage onto FCE

This sounds really dumb, but for some reason I can't log & capture any of my footage onto FCE. I have an inexpensive Sony Handycam that I'm using as my tape deck to transfer footage from a miniDV. I'm using a firewire, but I'm not sure hot to log the footage. I've used this once before for a project and got it to work, but I can't figure out why it's not working now. Please help!

Well I think I figured it out. Does FCE not have batch capturing? I had to simply just choose "Capture" - originally I was clicking "Log & Transfer" but that wasn't doing anything. Batch capturing would be a huge help.
Also, I finished a rough edit of my work and wanted to e-mail it to someone. I clicked "Export > Quicktime" but I think it's still an FCE file and it won't e-mail. Any ideas how to make it just a simple Quicktime file that I can e-mail?

  • Importing HDV 720p footage with HDR-HC1 - no video, but timecode!

    Thanks for reading...
I'm trying to import my HDV 720p footage from the HDR-HC1.
I get timecode but no video. I can control the deck but still no video.
I used the easy set up of HDV- 720p30.
I'm even trying to use HDVxDV and I can control the deck but no video.
    On the camera:
My iLINK is off. Settings set to HDV. Firewire is plugged in to HDV port.
    I tried:
    Different computers.
    Different versions of FCP.
    Different firewire ports.
    Restarting.
Anyone have this camera? I've been working on this for 5 hours now...

    Joshua
You really need to let us know what the original camera and HDV format was so that others here looking for answers can benefit from your issue. It was not known that you even had a tape recorded from another source in your original post and that would have made a big difference to the answers you where looking for. *There are many different flavors of HDV and not all work together with the various manufactures hardware.* It is clear to me that you found this out the hard way, and if you didn't post your last thank you post we wouldn't have known either.
There are many setting within FC that can be confusing and this is the place to come and ask for help. It is also the place you will get real answers to solve your issues. Jerry and I gave you solid answers to your original post and as always it is nice to see the Green or Gold Stars of reward for helping. But what is troubling to see is the other poster (who you mark as Solved) didn't understand your issue (due to the lack of original details) and thinks you have the same problem he does, *and he didn't even offer up any answers.* Know the next guy searching for answers will see the Green Star and look there first for his answers and there won't be one.
There are so many variables to factor when giving advice and many times we ask for more details first. I wish I had asked.
    Good Luck

  • Which --Project Properties--Preset for 1920x1080 HDV 1080p30 footage?

    Hi,
New to the HD world and have to make lower third for my footage. My media frame size is 1920x1080 and the compressor is HDV 1080p30. (I shot it progressive because it is for the web)
I don't see a preset for HDV 1080p30? Just presets for (HDV 1080i60), (HDV 1080i50), and (HDV 1080p24). Where is the preset for HDV 1080p30 and/or which one should I use to make my lower third over the footage?
    Thanks,
    -marco

Motion Project presets are not codec specific, they just set up the project size, aspect ratio, field order and frame rate.
Pick one that matches your footage, or you can use "import as project" to create a project based on the footage you import.

  • How do I import t2i footage to FCE?

I shoot on a t2i and i use MPEG streamclip to convert into AIC at a .mov file but whenever i go to put the clip into the time line, rendering is always needed. Also, the audio will not be in sync.
i've sort of just had to deal with these problems for a while, but i've noticed a certain loss in quality and frame drops. I'm hoping there's some way to make this work for me. any ideas?

    rendering is always needed.
This usually indicates that your clip properties do not match your sequence settings.
The T2i shoots HD video as H.264 in either 1920x1080 or 1280x720 frame sizes, all in P or progressive mode.   If you shoot 1920x1080, make sure you shoot at 30fps.  If you shoot 1280x720 make sure you shoot at 60fps.  (In North America)
Then, in MPEG Streamclip, convert as follows:
    For 1920x1080p30, convert to QT/AIC 1920x1080i30  (interlaced)
    For 1280x720p60, convert to QT/AIC 1280x720p30
In FCE, you need to select an Easy Setup that has a frame size & frame rate that corresponds to your converted video.   Select one of the AVCHD AIC easy setups that matches your converted video.  (Do not select the HDV easy setups.)  Then create a new sequence.  Then place your clips in the new sequence.
Provided the codec, frame size & frame rate match, all should be well.

  • Importing 3rd source dvd home footage into FCE

    Dear Forum,
I'm not sure if I'm wording this correctly, but I am putting some footage together for a high school sports team. I have captured video from my canon camera. I also have dvds from another parent from the team. Can anyone suggest an easy way to import the home dvd, burned on a pc, into FCE so I can create a team video?

  • IMPORTING FOOTAGE INTO FCE AND MERGING FILES WITH FINAL CUT STUDIO

So I recently purchased Final Cut Express to create off-line, rough cut projects...to be completed by more qualified editors other than myself. But I want to make sure that Final Cut Express is the right system for me.
    Here are my questions:
1.) I will be using a variety of video formats for this system, and will be ingesting primarily through a shared media drive. Should I be concerned by the fact that it says I can only use "HDV, AVCHD, and DV" for simultaneous edit? What if I originate my material on Beta or DVCPro and want to import using firewire?
2.) Will my timelines be compatible to other (higher-end) Final Cut programs?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Chip

    Welcome to the forum!
1.) If the video you plan to use is not HDV, DV, or AVCHD then it will not be able to be ingested by FCE. The best way to get your media into FCE would be to capture it, but if it originates somewhere else you can still import it into FCE provided it is one of the formats cited above. If your media is not one of these three, you will have to use a convertor to make it "readable" by FCE. If you want to keep the full resolution of another format, you are better off directly going to Final Cut Pro, as it can handle these formats.
2.) Final Cut Pro will be able to open your Final Cut Express timelines, but you will not be able to go back the other way around. So only let your editors open the project in FCPro once you are done using it in FCE.
If you are planning to shoot professional videos, FCE transcodes into Apple Intermediate Codec, usually giving you lower quality then if you were to ingest the media in FCPro, which uses ProRes for higher quality yet larger file sizes. If you are not worried about the mentioned drawbacks to using FCE as a first-cut before FCP, then you should be fine.

  • How to import 30p 1920x1080 footage into cs4

    Hi,
I shot some footage using my canon hf20 in 30p, at 1920x1080. when i open a new sequence i don't see a setting for 1920x1080 30p under AVCHD.
at first i was going to use the XDCAM HD preset since it's the only one i see that has 30p, but i realized that it's 1440x1080, not 1920x1080.
how else to import 30p 1920x1080 into premiere CS4?
    1) will the 1080i30 (60i) setting preserve the 30p progressive footage (even though the option is listed in premiere pro under 1080 interlaced)?
    2) or is the only way to edit 30p progressive at 1920x1080 is to select the AVCHD 1080p 24p setting and change the frame rate to 29.97?
    3) or is there some other trick altogether?
    thanks.

thanks for the replies. so does the 1080i30 (60i) setting do some kind of de-interlacing on 30p footage, even if it's not native and it's wrapped in 60i (like it is in the canon hf20)? or does the camera do that automatically?

  • Quality of edited footage in FCE.

    Hi all,
I have recently posted a thread about an issue I am having with iMovieHD and edited HD footage from a Canon HV20 camcorder.
After importing the footage into iMovie and then adding simple transitions and titles, the resultant part of the edited footage loses some of the quality of the original footage. This is not noticed when playing back on my computer screen but it is visible when viewed on my 50" plasma TV.
I can find no answer as to why this is the case, but my question for this forum is to ask if FCE creates the same 'feature' with edited HD footage, specifically when paired with a Canon HV20.
Although I will continue to use iMovieHD (sparingly), I need to be sure that an investment in FCE will yield better results.
    Many thanks in advance.
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   1GB RAM

    1) viewing the graphic on your computer monitor is viewing a low resolution proxy of the final product
    2) LiveType graphics are created in the animation codec which is high quality. Once you place it in your FCE timeline you will degrade that LT graphic to the level of quality set by your sequence setting.
    3) Use the .ipr file not QT conversion
    4) View the project on a broadcast monitor, and not the computer to get an accurate representation
    good luck

  • Using HD footage in FCE

Hi all, I'm new to FCE and HD editing. I have a Panasonic TM300 HD camcorder. I have shot a video in 1920 x 1080 and am editing it. I have successfully transferred the video to my imac but the video appears jerky with motion even when I view the original transferred clip. I have heard that FCE does not support 1920 x 1080 but there is a setting for it in Easy Setup which I used. How do I solve the jerky motion? Do I need to record in 1440?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
FCE support AVCHD 1920X1080 through Apple Intermediate Codec.
This camera shoot in AVCHD but what is the framerate?

  • 1920x1080 footage in Compressor aspect ratio off

    Hi guys,
I'm new to Compressor. I have an HD 1080p footage that I want to down sample to 720p or smaller, but keep the same 16:9 aspect ratio. It seems that Compressor always display and output at 4:3 aspect ration. My compressed video looks squished. What's going on? I'm trying to use ProRes setting.
    Can any one help?
    Shaun

I had the same thing. I was compressing some HDV to SD 16x9. In the preview it showed 4:3.
After it was compressed, it was in 16x9 format.
Have you tried just doing it and seeing what the results are?

  • Captured footage in FCE HD

    hi everyone
How do i find the files i captured through FCE HD? is there a way to save each project's captured footage to a different place?
In imovie it will save it all in one file (and you open it by right click-show packaged contents). does FCE HD do that?
    thanks
    24" iMAC

Probably your files are currently in User>Library>Final Cut Express Documents
You can save them to any location you want. Designate a Scratch Disk (the folder where you want your files) with File>System Tools. Save your render files to the same location and, if you want, your thumbnail files (I usually let the latter default to the FCE Documents but that's just me)
It really is best to separate your project files and your media files (the Scratch Disk) Your project files should be stored on your system drive and your Scratch Disk on a separate drive, internal or external

  • Cannot capture footage to FCE using a JVC-HDGR1u in DV mode

HELP ME PLEASE! I am so lost. I didn't notice I was recording my footage in DV mode on my JVC HD-GR1u and I MUST get it off and edit it... unfortunately its precious footage. I know the JVC HD-GR1u  IS compatible with FCE because normally I use the apple HD interface however... I cannot figure out the settings for this mode!!!!! I have tried numerous settings and I either get a black screen with "final cut express" and the apple logo.. or I get the colored bars in saying it cannot recognize the initial deck.... I cannot figure this out..

Are you sure you didn't actually mean the JVC GR-HD1?
Two things on the camera - in the camera's setup menus, set the System Menu > iLink Output setting to "SW".  Also, on the side of the camera, set the iLink output switch to "DV"
Two things in FCE - select the DV NTSC easy setup (assuming you are in North America). After selecting this easy setup, create a new sequence.
Then connect your camera to your Mac (using a FireWire cable (aka iLink cable)).  Then turn it on in playback mode.  Then start up FCE.  FCE should detect the camera and you should then be able to capture the DV video.
One small potential gotcha - if you shot the video with 12-bit audio you will need to select the DV NTSC 32KHz easy setup.  (12-bit audio = 32KHz audio).  Unfortunately most DV camcorders have a factory default setting of 12-bit audio and if you did not change it to 16-bit audio you will have to use the DV NTSC 32KHz easy setup in FCE.

  • Best way to combine HDV & DV footage into the same project

I'm about to edit a new project that is sourced from 75% HDV footage (1440X1080) and 25% DV(720X576) footage. I'll be outputting the final result as a widescreen 16:9 DVD initially, but I also want to do a HD-BluRay later on.
What is the best way to upscale the DV footage so that it will render at the same scale as the HDV footage? My initial attempts involved setting up a 1080i25 HDV project, and importing the HDV & DV clips into that, thinking that when I did the render it would upsize the DV clips, but it doesn't seem to do it. Would I be better off creating the DVD in reverse by downscaling the HDV footage, and creating a 16:9 DV project instead.
    Any suggestions gratefully received?

Tks for that advice guys. Re-Sizer looks the best for my future needs, but I probably don't have time to learn it for this project.
From the other reading I've done, if I don't use ReSizer or an equivalent, it seems that to get the best DVD quality I'd be better off creating an SD project and downscaling the HDV footage for that, rather than creating a HDV project and upscaling the SD, and then creating the DVD from that. Compression logic would tell me that upscaling the DV footage in PP and then sending it back down to SD for the DVD mastering is going to result in a lot of ****** looking original DV footage.
Because I'm under severe time-constraints regarding the DVD, I think for this one time-only, I'll do a seperate SD project for the DVD, and then redo it as a HDV project for the Blu-Ray release in a few months.
    Sound logical?
