HDV 24fps

Canon has introduced a consumer HDV camcorder - HV-20, which can capture at 24p. Can I use iMovie 6 to edit? I understand that iMovie doesn't support 24p - so, is there a workaround, and what are the consequences? Final Cut Studio is not an option, due to price and learning curve.
iMac 20" 2.16GHz Core2Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

My understanding is that this camera captures at 24fps and introduces a 2:3 "pull-down" just like the Panasonic DVX 100 (or a film transfer). ie: a "Normal" 2:3 not the advanced pull-down which is designed for 24P post.
So. . .
You "should" be able to edit this in iMovie HD as a 60i (US 30fps interlaced video) HDV2 project.
It can play back the various Canon XLH1, A1, G1 framerates, of course iMovie won't support anything from these except 60i.
The HV20 also offers a Cinema"tone" setting also, for a more "film-like" gamma curve and appropriate chroma settings which can be used independently from the 24P.
If you want/need the 24P motion for a short film it should do a good job, infact it might actually help make the MPeg2 compression more efficient since it would have fewer samples per second to deal with.
I'll just add that the perception of the projects I shoot with my DVX100 @ 24P (w/Cinelike Gamma and Matrix) is always rewarding.
I'm probably picking up one of these for home-movies just to "future proof" them. Even tho' I expect to be shooting work for hire on my DVX for some time yet.

  • PE7 HDV Preset for 24FPS

In PE7, what is the best preset for editng footage shot in HDV, 24 FPS? I used the existing HDV preset at 30 frames, but when I bring the footage to the timeline, I need to render it, and it lags even after rendering. Any suggestions?
    Thanks, Stan

Hi Steve, yes, miniDV tape it is. I am shooting on a Canon XH-A1. My camera preset is HDV-24fps. I usually always shoot 60i with this cam. But I thought I would try the 24 setting. It looks fabulous. BTW, I rendered it out to a .wmv 720P file and it plays perfectly and looks awesome. But I worry about doing more in 24 because of the way my PE7 handles it.
    Thanks, Stan

  • Trouble HDV capturing from a new XL-H1

I'm having trouble capturing from my XL-H1. The footage was shot in HDV 24fps and I'm trying to capture it to my G5 with a new version of FCS 5.1.
The machine seems to have trouble finding the in point and pops an error most times. When it doesd find the in point it cruzes right past the out point. When attempting to capture it also pixilates a frame or two about avery second and the video displays very choppy(during attempts to capture).
I noticed in the batch capture window, the settings say HDV, 1440X1080i and 29.97fps. and There donen't appear to be a way to set that to 24fps. Am I missing somthing?
    G5 Mac OS X (10.3.7)

No. I just haven't been able to successfully capture from that camera natively. I captured using my capture card...converting it to the more manageable DVCPRO HD. But I wanted HDV footage so that I could see what it was like. But I couldn't capture it.
FCP 5.1.2 and up should have all the HDV 1080p options. Make sure you click SHOW ALL in the EASY SETUP window. There are 1080p60, 1080p30 and 1080p24.
Other people have captured no problem, and yet more have my issue of not being able to. I could control the deck, but got nothing. Let us know how you fare.

  • Cannon HV30 24F HDV Export

I'm hoping someone can give me guidence on this technical issue...
I have a Cannon HV30 which I used to capture video in HDV 24fps using the camera preset.
I am using Premiere Pro 2.0 and downloaded the Cannon presets from the Adobe site for Cannon HDV cameras.
I then created a Premiere Pro project using these downloaded presets (Cannon 24F HDV) and used the Capture functionality to bring the video in from the camera.  The captured video appeared to automatically save as a MPEG file.
The video looked great in Premiere Pro and I used the timeline to edit the video for eventual use in an Encore DVD project.
The problem is this - How do I export this edited timeline out and still retain the video clarity?   I have exported as various file types (.avi, .mov) with various codecs for each of those file types.  Each time the video seems soft (blurred) when I view the exported file.
    Video settings on the export:
    Frame size: 720 x 480
    Frame rate: 23.976 fps
Pixel Aspect Ratio: D1/DV NTSC Widescreen 16:9 (1.2)
    Quality: High (100%)
Data rate: Recompress - Maintain Data Rate
    Any guidance will be appreciated.
    David

    Thanks Harm,
I thought that might be the reason but didn't expect it to be this soft (maybe wishful thinking).   The Premiere Canon Presets don't support transfer back to tape.
However, is downconverting the video in After Effects an option?  ...if so, would it give a better result?

  • H.264 Export Looks Weak

    Hi.
The H.264 output has weak colors, but the export with no conversion is right on time. Is this normal?
I'm using FCE4, a Canon HV20, HDV, 24fps, QuickTime Export with H.264 at best quality.
    Thx

    http://homepage.mac.com/giantklr/h264issue/fce4qt.jpg
You can't see it here, but in the timeline is another sequence. It's the tab called "color correction" in the back. I put two subclips on it: an uncorrected subclip and a corrected subclip. They're butted up against each other.
So, if 24p is not supported, can I get away with shooting at 30 frames per second and then choosing a frame rate of 24 frames per second at the output/compression stage? I really don't see the need of choosing my frame rate until the output/compression stage, myself. I figure that I'm more interested in my EXPOSURE: aperture/shutter speed/color/gain while capturing. If I get that right I can color grade to my satisfaction and then choose the frame rate. Does that make sense?
BTW, thank you SO much for taking the time to help with this. I'm at wit's end and there's no more that I can do on my own. I certainly appreciate it!

  • What is the best compression format for 1440 x 1080 24fps HDV?

I have a short film, around 13 minutes long, which I've recently completed. It was filmed in 1440 x 1080 24fps in HDV. What compressed video format would produce the highest quality "lossless" compression of the film? I'm planning on using the video file as my highest quality master copy –besides the FCP file itself. Thanks.

Your master should be exported as QT movie (not compression) keeping same settings and self-contained checked (No loss of quality is involved, the result is a perfect copy of each frame from your original media).
Any other conversion will involve compression then potential loss of quality.
That master will play fine on your machine but don't expect it to play on PCs.
However, you can send it to tape or take the exported self-contained file to a post house for DigiBeta or other transfer if you need screening copies of your video.
For the web H.264 is a great choice, amazing quality and fairly small file size with proper settings.

  • 25i HDV to 24fps

I discovered that vimeo HD video displays in 24p so for the PAL HDV i uploaded there are little jumps every second in HD.
I think having searched that this is pretty hard/not worthwile doing, but is there a method for converting PAL HDV (from sony hdr hc1e) to 24 frames a second.
Additionally, I'm only just getting to grips with technicalities, but should I always deinterlase my video on export in general because that gives better quality(-?)?
    Many thanks,
    Ross

Deinterlacing progressive footage isn't required for web streams, but it lowers the bit rate a ton and may well play nicer with little or no visible quality loss. It's mandatory with interlaced source however. It may be all you need to do but I figure you need to conform as well.
You can conform 25 to 24 fps in the tools menu in FCP... might try that without the deinterlacing and see the results... if they are OK, they are OK.

  • Best FCP settings for 1920x1080 HDV footage @24fps

...shooting film on small community river with a Canon XH-A1...and want to work with cinematic style "beauty shots" So far I'm assuming that import presets in FCP should be set at AppleProRes 422(HQ)...although this taxes my processor...I will be doing simple graphics and project will be about 20 minutes in length. I'd love some opinions on what to watch for and how best to proceed from anyone who is familiar and has worked with this type of set up. Thanks a mil.

  • Best workflow for HDV 1080/60i/24pA with FCP 5.1.4

I've spent hours trying to find the answer to this specific problem on the discussion forums as well as the FCP user manuals and I can't find it, please help! I've got a Sony HVR-V1U and I recently recorded several hours of footage at 24pA. I would like to edit the footage in 24p, and preferably in a different codec besides HDV and definitely not in AIC. I don't have any experience with Cinema Tools and I can't seem to get any files directly from FCP to Cinema Tools no matter what I transcode the video to. Also, is there any way to transcode the video to ProRes because it is so much faster to render video in ProRes than in HDV.
    Thanks in advance!

Removing pulldown is done during capture if you shot 24pa, and in Cinema tools if you shot 24p. However I don't think that camera shoots a version of 24p that works when you remove the pulldown pattern. I could be wrong, but as I recall, the 24fps video that the v1u shoots isn't exactly the same as that shot by say, a DV camera so might not work removing pulldown. Just looked at the specs at Sony on the camera... it does apparently shoot with a 2:3 pulldown, so after you capture, you might try Cinema tools for the removal. Never heard of anyone doing this with HDV though, so it might be pretty problematic.
That said, you should be able to transcode to ProRes in Compressor, and it should look great. Don't use your computer display to judge the quality of the results though, use an external video monitor. Artifact may show up on the computer's display when it's really not in the video...

  • Sequence settings for HDV 720p 24 fps

Okay, now that the French is gone I'm back on track, but still confused. I've captured my HDV 720p @ 24FPS footage using LumiereHD & it's separated & ready to go. What sequence settings/editing timebase should I use? I've noted people here saying DVCPro, but others said DVCPro is just problemic/not correct for HDV . . . and the Lumiere forum reccomends using the Apple Intermediate Codec, which I think people here said NOT to do . . . and there's a 720p24 option in Lumiere, but not in FCP . . . is it just like using 24p DV where you edit at regular 29.97? My head is turing into goo. Any sage advice, O sage ones? And I'm finishing on DVD, if that's usefull. Thank you!!!

I can't tell you what setting in FCP 5.1 to use, because I no longer have 5.1.
I would convert the HDV to DVC PRO HD 720p.
Editing in native HDV is a pain because of the frame structure.
You will end up with larger files with DVC PRO HD, but since it's all "I-frames" editing and compositing will be much, much faster.

It all depends on many things, including the running time. (Which camera did you use, I am assuming it is 24P?) Also I am guessing you want to put this on DVD?
Generally you will need to calculate the rates you can encode to make the video fit
    [Rate Calculations|http://dvdstepbystep.com/faqs_7.php]
Keeping mind issues of how rates can affect the DVD
    [How Rates Affect Playback|http://dvdstepbystep.com/faqs_7.php]
Not sure if you are targeting SD (PAL or NTSC) but the video needs to be encoded to m2v which is a compressed Codec (HDV is also).
Compressor (the newest version) and bitVice both do good jobs in creating m2vs off of HDV. In Compressor the frame controls willl help produce better results though it can take longer to encode.

I would probably export the movie as self-contained to start (not sure if there are alot of color corrections etc that need to be conformed and that can take time) and run that through the encoders, tweaking the settings.

  • Problems in editing at 24fps

I have a problem with working in 24fps editing mode. The problem consist in a very strange and until now irreparable flicker when I export and after that play on an external monitor of an Quicktime movie at 24fps.The flicker filters doesn't have effect. So I can't export a movie at 24 fps on tape and I can edit only viewing the sequence in the viewer window (not in the external monitor). How can I solve this problem. Thank you.

Post more about your system. Which Mac? do you have a capture card involved? 24fps DV or HDV or HD or DVCPROHD? what's the format you're working with?

  • Sequence settings for XH A1 24fps?

Just curious what sequence settings I should be using for 24fps. I had it set for Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 1920x1080 60i, but it looked jumpy when I exported it to Quicktime. I'm not sure where the issue is, in the sequence settings or with how I exported it. Should it be 24p instead of 60i? Thank you.

  • HDV 720p 25 and 24p films

    Hi,
I want to make a movie filmed with a DSLR in 24p. In FCE, I can just choose HDV 720p 25... so FCE adds a 13th frame (that is a copy of the 12th frame) for each second when I put a sequence in the timeline.
My movie is a dance movie, so I would prefer to not have that additionnal frame.
Is it possible to prevent FCE from adding a 25th frame in the timeline? Even if the movie is speeded up (if it would be possible, I imagine I would slow down the sequence at 96% - so I find back 24 frames per second).
Or, do you have an other idea? Is there a way to easily delete the 13th frame of each second?
    Thanks in advance,
    Yann

It would help if you specify the exact make/model DSLR you have.
FCE supports 720p25/30. It does not directly support 24fps anything.
I'd suggest looking at MPEG Streamclip to convert your camcorder videos to 720p25 or 30 (QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec) before importing the video into FCE.

  • HDV and FCP Export to Quicktime Movie

    Hi.
Should I be able to "Export to Quicktime" a 90-minute FCP timeline and expect no hiccups? I keep trying and my Quicktime file has an occasional slight jump from one frame to another when I view it. This happens about once every 2-3 minutes.
Is the file too large to play back (13gig)? Do I not have a powerful enough computer or graphics card?
My goal is to play the movie using DVI-out to a theatre's DVI-in, so the film can be viewed in the best quality possible. I was hoping to output to a Quicktime, dump it to my MacBook and play it using the DVI-out.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?
    Specs:
~ MacPro Dual-Core Intel Xeon 2.66 GHz, 1 GB Ram
~ NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics card
~ Timeline: 720p at 24fps HDV native video
    ~ Outputting to Quicktime Uncompressed
    ~ MacBook: 2.16 GHz, 1 GB Ram
~ MacBook Video Card: Intel GMA 950 graphics processor with 64MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory4

Choose file/export/QuickTime Movie, and check on the "make self contained" option. Turn off the "recompress all frames" option. This is the best export there is for any source media format HDV or not... Might try exporting just a bit, and see if this movie will play back ok on a MacBook first though using the DVI out to another monitor... Don't change formats. Making it any other format will cause quality loss, or create a file so large that the macbook won't play it... I'd also suggest you put it on a fw drive to play back from the MacBook.
If it were me though, I'd not trust the Macbook to play it back OK... just not enough horsepower IMHO.
