HDV 24p capturing

I purchased a Sony HDR FX1000 HDV camcorder. I recently shot a movie in 1080i 24p and had all kinds of trouble with the footage looking right. I have completed the project and trough a series of tricks and tweaks was able to make the footage look okay. It doesn't, however, look great.
I was wondering if anyone knows how to capture HDV 1080i 24p footage in FCP? What settings do I need to use if I am capturing via firewire and what settings would I use in Compressor in order to burn the movie onto an SD DVD?
Like I said, the other project is complete and I'm not going back to it, but I was just curious as to what to do right next time so I don't have these problems. Thanks.

No such thing as 1080i 24p. With that camera you most likely shot at 1080 24p. Signals scanned at 24p/30p are converted to 60i (using 2-3 pull-down for 24p) and recorded on MiniDV tape, allowing footage to be played and edited using existing HDV products. In this way, progressive images can be handled in the conventional HDV editing environment. I capture all my HDV footage as ProRes 422. See Andrew Balis's article on Ken Stone's website: http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/capture_hdv_prores_fwbalis.html
In FCP export a Quicktime movie. Use that movie in Compressor to make your SD video. Start with "DVD: best quality, 90 minutes".

  • How to capture HDV 24P footage without pull down

I´ve got some imagens with HVR-V1U in a HDV 24p mode thinking to transfer to film. Now I´d like to uploud the images in the same mode. In Premiere there is only HDV 30p and the option 24p only works for dv format. So, in the HDV 30p I receive the file in a Adobe with 6 more frames per second and it doesn´t work for cinema. Is there any way to edit a project in Premire in HDV 24p mode, and in this case how to get the file from the camera.
    thanks.

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Final Cut Express doesn't support HDV natively. It uses Apple Intermediate Codec upon capturing process to convert the HDV format.
Even if you can download your HDV from your PC to your Mac, you haven't the HDV native quicktime component to open the material for conversion to AIC purpose.
Final Cut Pro allows to works with native HDV.
So why don't you use more tapes and keep archived source material. Mini DV are pretty cheap these days.

  • Settings for audio HDV 24p 16:9

    Hi,
I have some very serious audio issues. Someone told me, maybe it happened because of the way I captured the audio (I don't know) into FCP. Maybe...
The footage was shot with an HV20 in HDV 24p 16:9. The sound clip in Format states:
    Aud rate 48.0 KHz
    Aud format 16-bit integer
Data rate 3.6 MB / sec
    Should it be that way????

Digital audio for video is 48 kHz, 16 Bit.
There are other settings, but let's not complicate the issue -this setting is correct for you.
So, what are your audio issues and how did you capture?
Did you transcode the HDV to Apple Intermediate or ProRes codec?
What is your Easy Setup and Timeline Sequence Settings?

  • HDV 24P importing into Final Cut Express?

I am trying to import a QuickTime clip Codecs: HDV720p24 - from Final Cut Pro into FC Express but unable to. The video clip come in with only sound no pic. Does FC express import HDV 24p??? and if so how do I find that codec. Please help..thanks

Thank you Tom... is there a way to export the file in a readable format from FCP? It seems there is a codec for HDV720p30 but not p24... I was told when I ought FCE that it would be able to transfer files from one format to the next. Is this a lie?

  • Premiere Pro 1.5.1 HDV VIDEO CAPTURE - Canon HV20

    Hi,
For the life of me I cannot get my camera to capture in HDV. I can switch over to DV and it will capture everything just fine. The settings I recorded in are HDV standard, Widescreen 29fps. Not the 24. But it just tells me the device is ofline no matter what I try. I grabbed a stand alone CineForm HDLink and that doesn't detect it either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The Client wants HD, not DV.
Premiere Pro 1.5.1 HDV VIDEO CAPTURE - Canon HV20 firewire
    Thanks in advance!

Ok, I spoke to soon. I kept searching and searching.  Finally found this..
    http://www.hv20.com/showthread.php?t=12131
My camera was locked in DV mode. So I had to switch it to HDV/DV
"b) As many have said you need to be sure that the camera is set ot output in HDV, and not DV locked. Because I am a bit of a dunce I found it difficult to locate that, even with the manual so here are some foolproof instructions on how to get there:
    in "Play" Mode > FUNC > MENU > PLAY/OUT SETUP2 > DV OUTPUT [set this to HDV/DV]"
    That did it.

  • HDV 24P TO 29.97

I have HDV24p footage (just one hour long) from a JVC PRO HD camera and I upload this footage by firewire to my FCP, setting my FCP easy setup to this way (tell me if it is the right way) "format" to HDV, "rate" to 23.98FPS and "custom setup" to HDV-720P24 ...... well now all my footage is loaded TO THAT WAY, but now I have to convert it (HDV 24P) to 29.97 and TO THE BEST QUALITY POSSIBLE and put it in a DVCAM tape for deliver ........... I had good experiences with compressor before in others converts and I have cinema tools (maybe it work for this case I dont know) well hope someone can help me with this. thanks for the responses.

You could use Compressor to perform the format change making a DV movie of it all, reimport it and print that to tape from a DV sequence, or you can also just put the HDV sequence in a DV sequence, render it, then print that sequence to tape.

  • Shoot HDV and Capture as DV ?

I have been looking at the Canon HV20 which is able to shoot both HDV and DV.
I assume that one could shoot HDV and capture it as DV in FCE and FCP. If this is the case, what Easy Setup would be used in both apps ?
Also, as HDV deals with frames differently, resulting in poorer movement rendition than DV, would this mean that the captured DV's motion would not look as good as usual ?
If that was true, it might be better shooting in DV initially ?
Any comments or thoughts would be welcome.

I have just remembered that 4 members of my video club recently shot a theatrical production.
They used 4 "manned" cameras shooting SD and had a "locked" unmanned HDV camera shooting the whole of the stage.
The theory behind it was that the locked camera footage could be used on occasions when the manned cameras did not capture ideal shots of the actors etc.
The fact that it was HD meant that they could zoom into the appropriate section of the stage, during editing, and still end up with quality roughly equal to SD.
Trying that with an SD camera would have resulted in a noticeable degradation of the image.
From what I could tell from the DVD they projected, it seemed to work OK.

  • Can't Import HDV 24p with Canon HV30

So I have the common and very low budget Canon HV30 HDV Camcorder, which has the ability to shoot in 24p. The only options I have when importing footage from a tape in Pr are HDV or DV, even though the Sequence format is HDV 1080 24p. After importing, the clips are at the standard HDV 1080 60i instead. Is there a way to capture the footage with the correct frame rate, or do I have to do a pull down removal in After Effects? :(

"Not all of them offer a recording format that can do proper pulldown removal, though Josh. The Panasonic 24p mode is to be edited in a standard 30i preset. Only the 24pA mode offers a pulldown that can be properly removed for editing in a 24p preset."
Jim I know the difference between 24p and 24pa, sounds like Harm doesn't though explain it to him. All I was trying to get across is: Just because a dv tape can only record 60i doesn't mean you can get progressive frames from it.
I did a google search and there a ton of info about dv30 and 24p. The whole point of that camera is that it shoots 24p, it's cheap and a lot of indie people use it to shoot shorts and even features. There's whole websites about that camera because it can shoot 24p. Click below.

  • HDV 24p

I own FCP 5.1.4, Avid 5.7, Prem Pro 2.0. Now out of these 3, which would you guess handles HDV just fine, without any additional exspense. You quessed it Premiere. Apple should send one of their guys over there as a tech and find out how to capture 24p. It would restore my faith in FCP. I know JVC would love this!

Is there a question in there?
If Premiere Pro 2.0 works fine for 24P HDV, that's great -- use it.
Try it with DVCProHD 24p and doesn't work without additional programs.
FCP works just fine. So it goes both ways, and that's to be expected.

  • HDV 24f captured as true 24 fps....why?

SO...I have the XH A1 which, from what the manual says....can only output as true 24f in standard definition, but in HDV, it will always be 60i. Well somehow in FCP 6 when I look at the information on the clips I captured with the easy setup as 1080i60....they say 1080p24....how is that?

Does the frame rate say 23.98? Because unless it says that, you are NOT true 24fps. IN fact, 23.98 IS NOT true 24fps...only 24.0 is true 24fps, and only film and high end formats of HD (HDCAM SR) run at that speed. But I'll wager that you are 1080p24 at 29.97fps. It says 1080p24 because you are running 24p footage...Canon's 24p called '24f,' but still, film looked footage running at 29.97.

  • What is the Definative answer to JVC HDV 24p compatibility with FCP 5.1

I spoke with JVC yesterday and they claim that the 24p HDV codec is now supported with FCP. I am shooting a PBS piece in two weeks and wonder if it is safe to shoot in 24p HDV with the JVC HD100u. Is there a current state of the craft answer?

  • 24p capture problem

I captured some footage from an XL 2 at 24p using the advanced pulldown. The audio slips out of sync over time when in FCP. It even goes out of sync during playback in the viewer window. However, the footage plays back properly when I open the original Quicktime file off of my Video HD. The problem started when I updated to FCP 5.1.3 but I updated to 5.1.4 and the problem persists.
Has anyone else run into this problem?

I didn't think the XL 2 could do advance pulldown? You may want to check that it is doing what you think it is.
Sounds like your sequence may be set at 29.97 while your clip is running at 23.97.
This article may help your understanding.

  • Balckmagic Intensity Pro Vs. HDV Firewire capture

Assuming a suitable computer and FCP6.
what are the benefits , if any, of capturing via the Intensity Pro card using the HDMI input?
so far what i know is that it uses mjpeg compression (better than HDV compression?)
and you can capture using ProRes codec.
thus avoiding the GOP timeline and long renders.
some suggest the image quality is quite a bit better too.
plus you get a HDMI output for a monitor which seems a big plus for the low cost.
anyone used this card like this?

The big plus with HDMI is an all digital uncompressed signal in a full raster 1920x1080 resolution 4:2:2 color space hardware conversion into the capture card. It is my opinion that the quality is the best it will ever be. Yes you can transcode to Pro Rez given you have an Intel unit or quad G5 to keep up with the software conversion. Yes by transcoding you will avoid HDV conforming. It is well known that converting to an all i-frame codec like DVC Pro HD or Pro Rez is a great way to work from HDV sources. And yes you can either monitor HDV or any other HD format with this card.
    Good Luck

  • Problems with Playback of HDV clips captured w ProRes422 codec

I am trying to edit (FCP 6.0.5) with footage captured using the ProRes422 codec, shot with Canon XLA1 at 1080p30. The playback is terribly slow, stop & start. Sometimes the audio will play but not the pic. Sequence is set for ProRes422 and I have all the playback settings low to reduce processing load. I've tried changing settings, etc. nothing seems to work. I'm thinking I may have to recapture the footage in native hdv (have some of that and it seems to playback fine but the data rate is much lower) Any suggestions?

You'll likely find that is the solution. USB delivers the video in bursts while FW provides the steady stream necessary for video playback.
Make sure whatever drive you use has at least 15% free space and is formatted MAC OS EXTENDED.
Let us know how you make out.

  • How do I turn off live preview during HDV firewire captures?

My cpu uses a lot of cpu during HDV captures, and I know that a lot of it has to do with the live preview (ie, the window that shows you what is being captured). How do i turn this live preview off? Thanks

If the metronome got recorded on your track from a mic with it coming out of your speakers (the only way it could have been recorded) there's no way to take it out. When you say you turned it off, did you just uncheck it in the control menu? Or did you go to the preferences and change its behavior there? I have mine set for recording only, not on playback. But if you turned it off in the control menu, then it should not be present, unless you inadvertently recorded it from your speakers as I described, and it is not going anywhere. This is one reason it is best to monitor your recording with headphones and not speakers, since anything that comes out of them will be recorded with a live mic close by.
