HDV 720p30 codec(?)

I am using snapz pro x to capture machinima at 720p but the machine I am using to capture does not have Final Cut Pro on it and (hence?) does not have the Apple HDV 720p30 codec as an option to save. Where can I locate this for download, or on my machine so that I can keep all my source in the same format?

It isn't available outside of FCP. You will have to save as another format then convert later.

  • CS5: Export HDV 720p30 Timeline to HDV MPG File

    Hi-
Hopefully a simple question. I want to export my HDV 720p30 timeline to a file without introducing any additional compression (or very minimal). In searching for a solution, I read that you can connect an HDV deck, select output to tape, let the sequence render, and then search for a MPG file in the cache that's essentially the rendered sequence's HDV MPG file. Since I don't have an HDV deck anymore, is there an easier way? Should I just export MPG with the highest quality settings? What specifically should I choose? Ideally, I'd like to be able to just drag this 'edited master sequence'' back into the timeline as a 'raw' HDV 720p30 source file down the road. Thanks in advance.

    Thanks Colin-
Thanks. I do understand the additional level of compression. Even though the sequences are only a few minutes each, I don't think it's worth dealing with the huge file sizes, etc. I was just looking for the 'ideal' way to backup the master sequence - something the most equivalent to providing 'an edited master' via HDV tape.
I suppose I could have used an intermediary codec like Cineform, but it's really not worth it. What would be a good alternate (or less compressed) alternative?

  • Importing HDV 720p30

Hi I just started capturing footage on my JVC JY-HD10u, shooting in 720p30, and final cut only seems to recognize the camera and capture the footage when I'm using the intermediate codec for HDV 720p30, but there's also an option for HDV 720p30, but for some reason it doesnt seem to work. why is Final cut making me use the intermediate codec when the regular one exists? also I have a setting on my camera that lets me choose between iLink out: "DV" or "MPEG2". the camera will only work when it is set to MPEG2, I dont know what the difference is but I was curious as to why the DV didnt work.
Finally I have an SD setting capability shooting in 420p60 which i was very excited about but have absolutely no idea how that will work either... any help would be much appreciated, thanks a bunch,
    John

    Hi(Bonjour)!
It's a matter of choice and workflow.
See this link for documentation about FCP and High Definition formats:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/FCP6HD_and_BroadcastFormats.pdf
Apple intermediate codec "write" all images on a 29.97 frame rate basic as HDV is a MPEG2 format based on a long GOP (group of picture) of 0.5 second.
For this reason, AIC tends to take 5 to 6 time the space of native HDV.
But you works with all images needed to editing.
HDV native push on computer processors as all intermediate frames must be calculated to a complete one on viewing.
The conversion from HDV to DV occurs directly on your camcorder, and so, you have to choose DV-NTSC if you want a SD material.

  • HDV 720p60 VS HDV 720p30??

This one should be easy but I have forgotten what all of those numbers mean. I noticed that when I try to use media manager to recompress a project using HDV 720p60 the project size ends up being half the size of the project if I were to use HDV 720p30. I always thought that these two aren't that different from each other after all. Can someone please explain why such difference between the two file sizes?
I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

I can setup for 720p30, Are you sure this isn't right for you. Are you sure you shoot 60 frames of HDV. Please give more details including versions of OS,FC, QT and computer, and camera/decks involved.

  • Importing HDV 1080i60 as HDV 720p30

I have a sony HDR FX1 and I want to import the HDV 1080i60 footage I took into FCP as HDV 720p30. What is the easiest way to do this?

You can't do this without a capture card. But, if you had a card, then it would be best to capture as DVCPRO HD 720p.
You cannot cross convert via firewire.

  • Media Manager not deleting unused media from HDV (intermediate codec) clips

I have a project which uses HDV footage which I captured using the Apple Intermediate Codec. I now have a bunch of clips that are very large in file size so I'd like to use the Media Manager to delete all the unused footage from the clips. I have tried countless different selections of sequences, clips in the browser, clips in a timeline etc but can't seem to get the Media Manager to show a smaller file size for the processed files based on 'Use Existing' with 'Delete unused media' option. The two size meters at the top always stay the same. Can the media manager trim HDV/Apple Intermediate Codec footage? If not is there a way to get rid of the footage that I haven't used? Thanks!
    Ben

I've never mastered MM. If I want a small section out of larger clip, I simply just export that section of the clip using 'current settings'.
Hope someone who has tamed the MM beast will step in here and offer you a better way...
    good luck.

  • HDV Quicktime Codec for PC

    Hi
I am in the middle of editing a project on FCP 5 and need to export part of it to a PC.
The footage is HDV 1080 50i and for speed I would prefer to keep it that way.
I'm having trouble finding the Quicktime codec to allow the footage to be palyed back on the PC, can anyone tell me where to find this???
    Thanks
    Ajay

I think you're talking about exporting to wmv. Flip4Mac Studio Pro HD is a good start. If you want better than that, check out Episode.

  • Apple HDV "uncommon codec"?

I edit footage mostly from a Sony Z7 camera, shot in HD 25p onto Compact Flash cards. The FCP (sony) plugin imports this footage via "log and transfer" and turns it into AppleHDV and I use that codec for my timeline. My finished edits are exported as self-contained AppleHDV, ready to be transformed into whatever format is required.
I've been told the Apple HDV codec is an unusual codec (by Sorenson as it happens). I will go to Prores if I'm using other formats or doing color correction of any significance. In fact I prefer Prores in most ways but I cannot transcode to Prores via "log and transfer" so I tend to stick with Apple HDV as a matter of course.
Am I unusual in working this way?
Anyone else working with this codec - surely I'm not alone?
(for the record, it turns out in Sorenson Squeeze 7 there is a bug that makes horrid results when transcoding HDV to anything H.264 - I think thats worth taking note of!)
I'm just wondering if I'm weird

This is true, but it takes a heck of a lot longer to transcode all your footage to prores than to edit straight into HDV. I'm using a pretty speedy mac and I can't say the timeline renders have been any trouble.
I would consider ProRes if I could transcode during "log and transfer" but it seems there is no way to do this without transfering all clips to HDV first.
I could also just work with a ProRes timeline - but then I'm not sure how this would work much differently to exporting my master movie as ProRes from an HDV timeline (apart from every clip would be screaming for a render all the time during the edit.).
My thinking seems to tally with Ken Stone - that if your outputting to web/dvd formats and not doing much color correction or graphics you might as well as stay in HDV.
The problem with this idea is highlighted when you discover that the pricey compression software you bought to take care of all your compression needs wont transcode HDV to h.264 without making a right old mess of the picture - due to a bug involving this "unusual HDV codec".

  • Getting the HDV 1080i60 Codec

I need to play a video I got from iStockPhoto.com that is in native HDV 1080i60 format. I have Final Cut Express as well as QT Pro, but I can't play the file.
I've read through all the topics on this subject on the forums but haven't found an answer that's suitable or that works (such as using MPEG Streamclip).
The file will play in VLC... is there any way to convert it?

Haha... thanks guys. While I appreciate these answers maybe I should've quoted all the things I've read already.
Yes, I am missing the codec.
It's only available for FCP users. I have Final Cut Express.
My question is... does anyone know how to convert it?
    My answer is use VLC.
It's available online. It won't give you the high-quality of the HD, but it works.

  • Real slow mo using HDV-SD50P codec?

    Hi,
I need to incorporate material shot in HDV-SD50 into a DVCPro HD 1080i50 project for a smooth slow motion sequence. What I am wondering is, whether I can do this in Compressor, and what my best solution is for minimising quality loss when including SD material in a HD project?
How do I take this into my existing FCP sequence which is on the DVCPro HD 1080i50 setting?
The finished project will have to be blown up even further to 1920x1080, so I need to consider this as well.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?
    Thanks

    I wouldn't change applications against a deadline.
Slow motion is not an easy effect to do in post unless you shot more frames per second than you needed for standard speed. Making 30 frames a second into 60 frames requires each frame to be printed twice. What were your expectations or what have your tried before?
Especially with HDV, which starts out so heavily compressed, by the time it gets slomo'd and transcoded back to MPEG2 again, yeah, I imagine it's gonna look pretty bad. You can obtain some expensive software to do the optical flow pixel interpretation without buying FCS2 but that's up to your client's needs for smooth slow motion. Rendering optical flow, we've heard, takes for freakin' ever, even on the best machines.
Some HDV users will chime in over the next few hours or days with more helpful advice.

  • HDV "Stream Problem" while digitizing.

I am trying to digitize some HDV footage shot in 720p30. I get deck control I can play the footage in the capture window but when I try to capture now it will capture only a few seconds and then stop and give me this message.
    "Stream Problem"
"Capture was stopped due to a problem with the incoming stream. This might be a problem with the tape. All media up to this point has been preserved."
Does anyone know what is going on here or how to fix it?

    Greetings everyone,
Just want to add my two cents and testify that this is a real problem regardless of what JVC or Apple want to disavow. My comrade and I shoot with two JVC GY-HD100U's with the HDV 720p30 codec. We purchased the Firestore DR-HD100's (God bless their soul - I don't care what all the reviewers say about this product - they need a visit from the iPod development team) with the cameras and use those for majority of jobs. No problems with TC breaks. However take that backup tape that was simultaneously recording with the Firestore and perform long captures from tape, we encounter stream breaks. Both cameras have had this problem out of the box. We don't have a dedicated deck since we figured most work will come off the Firestores so when we capture from tape its from the camera. However the Firestores are limited by battery life and for long continuous shoots we fall back on tape. Hence the frustration of TC breaks. Could someone from JVC or Apple take some initiative and find the flaw? Thanks.

  • HDV Luminance Crushed When Digitizing?

I just upgraded to Final Cut 6.
I've shot two interviews with a white background, with the intent to make it very white.
Shot with a Sony Z1U, I specifically lit the background and adjusted the iris so that it read 100% IRE via the zebras. I backed off the aperature by no more than 1/2 stop to just remove zebras from the white background, and then lit my subject based on the background exposure (e.g., I adjusted their lights, not the aperature).
Here's the problem: After digitizing the footage via firewire at both Apple Intermidiate Codec and Native HDV codec, the whites are crushed and the waveform monitor (in FCP) shows the white background as 80%! It should be at least 90%, if not 95%, minimum. 80% just should not be! Both the LCD on the camera and my Sony 8044Q 9" high-end monitor show me WHITE as the background, virtually blown out; yet on the FCP scope it's showing 80%.
My 23" Apple Monitor is calibrated using the Pro version of ColorVision calibration software, and yet, everything looks very warm on my LCD screen as well. Okay, perhaps there's going to be a slight shift in color due to differences in monitors (which is much more than I think it ought to be), BUT, the scope says 80%. So, something somewhere is going on (wrong), and if you have any idea how to help me figure it out, I would be quite thankful.
If it helps, here it is posted on my web site: http://www.thenaturalguide.com/Videos/VegVickiQT.htm

  • HDV and DVCPro HD in the same timeline???

If I want to mix 720p footage from both HDV and DVCPro HD (from the JVC HD100 and Panasonic HVX200 respectively), what timeline preset should I set it for: 720p30 HDV or 720p30 DVCPro HD? If I set it for HDV 720p30, will this mess up the DVCPro HD?

Create a DVCPro HD timeline, then drop HDV onto it. You will need to render the timeline with the HDV footage to play it smoothly, but it will save you rendering all your footage, even if you are not going to use it.
Rendering all your HDV into DVCPro will require a lot more storage if you captured it as native HDV or about the same amount of storage if you used Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) HDV.
Even if it does play back smoothly (using RT extreme or whatever) you should force render the timeline, to make sure of the look of HDV rendered in DVC Pro HD meets your requirements.

  • Capturing HDV 720/60p?

Can Final Cut even capture HDV 720/60p nativly? I've been trying to capture some footage recorded on a JVC GY-HD250U with a JVC BR-HD50U deck. The footage was intended for a 720/30p project, but I couldn't capture it that way. The only workaround I found was to capture it into the project in the Apple Intermediate Codec HDV 720p30. What other workflows / solutions are there for this, if any?

I read a little about this JVC camera and I wasn't sure you can get 60p onto the tape, it seemed like you could get 60p out in analogue.
Quality is something you should decide. I think the best conversion quality comes when you convert using a completely digital hardware solution.
I am not the person to comment on Multicam editing as I have not had enough experience and I haven't really got it to stay in sync when I tried it. BTW The Ripple downloadable Multicam tutorials are great. I will say DVC Pro renders very quickly with my setup, I don't have enough experience with PR yet to comment.

  • Opening FCP captured HDV file in windows

Hello. I'm trying to take a HDV file I captured in FCP and open it in either Adobe Premiere 1.5.1 or TMPGenc for encoding into VC-1/WMV HD AP (I'd like to edit it in Adobe Premiere), and then put it through say...Scenarist.
I have not been able to open it in QT for Windows at all no matter what. I want to keep it as an HDV file and not reencode due to file space issues. I have intalled the HDV plugin for Premiere 1.5.1 however it doesn't open in anything at all, indicating it's not a Adobe issue.
What i suspect is that it's not opening because it's in a proprietary QT wrapper that Apple will not let anyone access to build a decoder around. Once captured on a mac it's obviously not a .avi format file regardless of codec used.
If this is not possible a simple 'no it's not possible' would easily suffice. I'm off to get some sleep. TIA.

Probably best practice to start and finish the project on the same platform.
Most of the HDV video codecs used in FCP do not have Windows counterparts. Soon FCP Suite will be updated to version 6 (maybe NAB convention).
