HDV Aspect Ratio and Exporting For the Web

INTRODUCTION
I am trying to export an HDV video for the first time and have managed to confuse myself. I want to upload it to blip.tv and they transcoded videos into Flash with 4:3 aspect ratio. But more than that, I want to understand how this all works so I don't have to guess about the settings that will give me what I want.
BACKGROUND DATA
4/3 is 1.333...
16/9 is 1.777...
1440/1080 is 1.333... (if the pixels are square)
1920/1080 is 1.777... (if the pixels are square)
In FCP my clip format says:
Frame Size: 1440 x 1080
Pixel Aspect: HD (1440 x 1080) (Does this mean the pixels are 1.333... times wider than it is high?)
EXPORT USING QUICKTIME CONVERSION
When I go to export this clip using Quicktime Conversion under the Options... Size... dialog and look at the Dimensions dropdown, (I assume this is the dimensions of the exported video. Is that correct?)
Some of the settings are (the settings are in quotes, my notes are in parentheses.):
"HD 1440 x 1080 16:9" (if pixels are square this is 4/3)
"HD 1920 X 1080 16:9" (if pixels are square this is 16/9)
So both of these settings claim to be 16:9 but they both can't be true unless they have different pixel aspect ratios (which I find hard to believe). This makes me think I don't really know what they mean when they notate something as 16:9. Can anyone give a definition that will help me here?
EXPORTING FOR THE WEB
Using FCS2, what settings should I use to export this clip undistorted for the web (with letterbox if needed)?
Thanks for the help,
Rob:-]

What I find with HDV 16x9 1440x1080 footage, is that when you output for the web you have to hard code the size you want the result to be. 320x180 or 640x360 for example scale things nicely. If you want bigger, just do the math.
I don't know why but whenever I select a predefined output size, it always screws it up (I don't work with 4:3 ever, so I'm speaking only of 16x9). So I always enter the size I want.
And as far as Compressor 3, I really can't get that to set the size I want correctly either. Mostly its due to me being lazy and not wanting to spend a year reading the Compressor manual. A package that should basically have the easiest interface known to man is now so complicated that unless I have to hand-holding tutorial, or get to drag/drop one of their presets, I end up screwing things up with it. Not to mention that you get to wait for hours just to see how you screwed up the settings of your output.

I have images that I need to resize, crop and rename (change "filename.jpg" to "filename_850x490.jpg" and make an optimisation for the web

I can use my action (resize, crop, save) and use file renaming option if I use "save as" options
I can use my action (resize, crop, save for the web ...) but the file renaming option are not use at the export,
So I have to create two actions (one for resize, crop and rename and an other to compress images with "save for the web"

  • Export for the web fails

I am using QT 7.5.5 and keep hitting the same problem trying to export for the web - to make a movie for the iPod - I get the Error message "Export Failed - the operation could not be completed". As with other people I resort to MPeg Streamclip or Compressor but I really liked the ease that this command gave, three different size movies in a folder. Very neat but now, Fail and no explanation.
I've tried different size movies and different types or formats too; all fail.

I'm running QT 7.6.4, and am experiencing a QT issue I can't resolve. Have exported from FCE (settings: best quality, H.264, 720x486 4:3 NTSC). Movie plays fine in QT, but when I use the Export for Web setting, the Desktop version terminates with a"failed export process terminated unexpectedly (11)" message. (iPhone version continues w/no problems.)
I've used these same settings many times and never had a problem. I've tried re-exporting older QT files and they still work, so I'm guessing there's something corrupted in this file...but I've re-exported it from FCE and still same issue.
I've tried this on two different Macs...repaired permissions on both...still no love. I've trolled the web for solutions, none found.
    Any input welcome. Thanks.

  • What is the aspect ratio and fps for video in Connect 9?

I'm trying to find any definitive details on the aspect ratio and fps supported by Connect 9.  It is well documented for 8 that it was 640x480 at 20 fps.  Is that the same for 9?  Or has that improved?

The supported resolution and frame rates for video in the Video pod have not changed with Connect 9.

  • Aspect ratio and exporting help, PLEASE!

I've been given a project that was shot on DVCPro HD tapes. The footage was already loaded onto a drive for me. When I bring the clips into FCP, they are 1920x1080 and appear squished in the viewer and canvas. If I click "anamorphic" in the sequence settings, the footage no longer looks stretched.
Great. Now, I need to export the footage to QTs that are a random 620x349, and the client doesn't want the images letterboxed or with bars on the side... they'd prefer that I just crop the images to that aspect ratio. It's for the web.
How can I do this? Everytime I export, I'm getting bars on the sides or a squished image. Thanks for your advice!

That's DEFINITELY not DVCPro HD settings are you SURE they match the clips? AND 1920x1080 is NOT anamorphic.
Also, how are you getting letterbox? Your sequence settings are 16:9 - not letterboxed.

Hello there @Aokvilla , Welcome to the Forums!
For the issue you are having, I would recommend trying a different web browser for starters, and if that doesn't help, follow the instructions below from another post with a resolved solution. If those steps don't help, the problem could be your router.

  • Management access and history for the Web Survey

    Hi to all,
I've two questions on the Web Survey.
1- Is possible the access on the Web Survey compiled from someone? If yes, what?
    2- The History is managed?
    Regards,
    Marco

    Hi Marco,
    1. there is no system supported history management. You need to find a process.
I implemented using direct update in the application. The link is part of the portal
knowledge management. To have a survey history the purchaser or supplier copys
the file and store it in the folder.
    2. All these screens are BSP driven. The registration page creates the business
partner in SRM, why changes are extremly tricky, but I also do not see the need
to change the first page. In Prescreen vendors it is the same, propably possible.
The questionaires can be adjusted within SRM trx and somehow easily configured.
    3. There are several tables, which in combination contain the questionnaire.
Have a look for tables starting with tuws, like TUWS_SURVEY.
    4. HTML
    5. No; a questionnaire does no have any attachment functio. You can attach
document to a prospect in the trx Prescreen Suppliers. The docs are linked to
the Business Partner, like the questionnaire as well.
    6. Once the supplier submits the registration page, the questionaire is sent out
automatically. For getting the process running the web survey settings as well
sapconnect needs to be configured. The process is described e.g. in Guide for
Strategic Sourcing as well into sap.help for the process.
    Cheers,
    Claudia

  • Best settings to export for the web?

    Hey everyone,
What do you think is the best setting to export video to web? I export now using quicktime and once in a while (I would like to use it more often since its much easier) compressor. So what is the best settings to export video to the web without having it get all blurry? I also use an XL2 so the video is good.

    JB
but I'm concerned about whether H264 is accessible by an audience outside the Mac umbrella.
    They need QT7 installed.
You can get Flip4Mac and add WMV export capabilities to QT. I'm sure that with a little of experimentation you'll get good results and the needed component isn't expensive.
    Hope that helps !

  • Exporting for the web from FCP 6

Hi. I have a 20-minute long sequence in FCP6 and I need to export it so I can send it to someone via YouSendIt. What is the best way to do this so that I end up with a file that is less than 100 mb?
    Thanks,
    Andy

You need to give us more information.  What are your sequence settings?
But generally, I'd recommend exporting with current settings (file:  export:  quicktime move NOT quicktime conversion) and bring the resulting file into compressor and use the apple:  otherworkflows:  web:  download:  quicktime 7 compatible:  LAN or 800 kbs preset  (or someting like this, I'm not on my editing system).  When you apply it to your file, you'll get an estimated file size in the summary paenl of the inspector.
One thing to do in compressor is to turn frame controls on in the frame controls panel and make sure the resize filter is set to best.   This will increase the processing time, but improve quality.

  • Exporting for the web

    ok I'll keep it simple.
I want the 6 minute quicktime movie file for my iweb site to include:
    H.264 codec
    320X240 res
    around 800kbit data rate
    AAC audio
I know how to set all those, but my BIG ISSUE is: I don't want the file to be streaming, and I want the file to download to the viewers computer, but I want the viewer to be able to see the video and watch it as it downloads. Does that make sense? If so, how do I do that in the options of quicktime?

the compressor preset doesn't change the browser/html behavior. When the browser plays it, the "download" goes to a temp file. If you actually have the browser download the file, it goes to the desktop (apple default)

  • Change/Configure Host and Port for the Web Service Proxy with Server

    Hi,
Is there a way to configure Host and Port in generated proxy for Web service depending upon server. (ADF 11g)
    Scenario:
We are consuming Credit Card web service from a service provider and have different Host and Port details for development, QA and Prod.
So we created proxy classes using wsdl for development and things work fine, but when deploying code to QA or Prod we need to change the Host
    and Port details.
Is their a way we could user variable's for Host and Port which looks to some configuration file to evaluate their values
    based on server.
I am a bit new to this web service .. will appreciate if someone could provide an example.
    Thanks.

Are you using Web Service Proxy or Web Service Data Control?
If you are using Web Service Proxy. Right click on your Proxy --> Properties --> Port Endpoints. Here you can change the IP & Port details for each port.

  • HD Exporting for the Web

I am using FCP 6.0.4 currently and I would like to find a way to export a HD movie(720p) that will look as good as it does on my computer as it would onthe web. I'm a youth minister and would like to film some of our events and then post them in HD on our website. I wasn't sure what type of settings would give me the best picture and how I would go about doing that. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks,Matt

H.264. Look in Compressor at the QUicktime 7 Settings.

  • The aspect ratio and dimensions of the MPEG-4 movies are distorted horizontally when I transfer them either from my macbook pro or my Lacie external drive to my new iMac.  What can I do?

I just bought a 27" iMac with an intel core i5 processor.  Most programs and files have tranferred successfully.  The dimensions of the MPEG-4 movie files have been horizontally distorted.  What can I do to correct this problem and prevent the dimension distortion from occurring in the future.

    Hi landonw
The HD will probably have to be removed from the MacBook Pro and connected to a USB adapter or placed in a dock to get your data off of it. I would take the MacBook Pro along, the folks at the Apple Store should be more than happy to help transfer your data to a new iMac.

To protect your data in the future, pickup a USB External HD +(for under a $100)+ and use Time Machine.
