HDV audio problems in iMovie
I recently purchased a new Canon XH A1 camcorder. The only editing software I have at the moment is iMovie. When I import video from this camera the audio is way off. Is this a problem with iMovie or the camera? How can I fix it?
"..Could it be the tape?.." ..No.
You don't say whether you're using it in standard-def mode, or HDV hi-def mode.
If in SD mode, are you running it at the normal 60i (interlaced) mode, or have you set it to one of the non-standard alternative 24F or 30F modes?
24f (full-frame, non-interlaced) probably can't be handled properly by iMovie, and for the 30f mode you may need to import as 720p ('p', as in 'progressive', is more or less the same thing as 'f', 'frame' mode) ..although in iMovie that's meant just for HDV importing:
There's an oddity about Canon camcorders, which isn't apparent in normal short-duration shots, which is that the audio can drift out of sync on shots which last longer than about 20 mins ..so if you were shooting a play or a wedding, with a continuous shot of half-an-hour or more, then the audio may drift out of sync.
With normal short-duration shots that isn't a problem, so your audio oddity may be due to the frame rate you'd chosen.
Why not give us more info about (a) whether you'd shot in HDV or standard-def, (b) whether at the normal 60i frame rate, or at one of the fancy 24f or 30f frame rates?

Audio problem in iMovie HD 6 transitions
Hi,
Has anyone encountered the following problem in iMovie HD 6? If so, how do you correct it?
I added a "fade in" transition at the beginning of a clip. Now, as the audio and video fade in, the audio is very choppy until the transition ends. Same problem with a fade out.
The clip itself is fine. I tried deleting and re-applying the transitions.
I've had no problems with iMovie HD previously.I have not encountered that problem. But it's common for little glitches like that to occur occasionally. Preferences and permissions can get corrupted. Your problem might be project related and not occur in other projects. (You can do a short test project to find out.) In any event, it probably will not appear in the project when you burn it to a DVD. For the heck of it, you might try doing a quick share to iDVD and playback your project there.
When little glitches like this develop, it often helps to delete preferences and then do a permissions repair. To delete preferences, close iMovie and trash the file named com.apple.iMovie.plist located in User (the House icon)/Library/Preferenes. Then do a permissions repair using the Disk Utility app on your Mac. This is found in the Utilties folder. In the left side of the Disk Utility window, select your Mac HD icon and then click on the Repair Permissions button. It takes about 3 or 4 minutes for your Mac to repair permissions. Once that is done, relaunch iMovie. iMovie will create a new .plist file to replace the one that you deleted.
Now see if you still have the problem. -
*** is up with the audio problem in iMovie '11?
Okay. This is ridiculous. What is the deal with the audio issues in iMovie '11? I am working on a short film. I insert audio files for streets sounds, door sounds, etc. some work, some don't. I converted .wav files to .aif files. Still nothing. I updated my OS and updated my iMovie to the latest versions. Still nothing. Why are the sounds there one second then gone a minute later?
Great.
Gkad you got it figured out.

Apple, please fix audio problems with iMovie
Ok, I have many iMovie projects, about 10. In one project when I add music from iTunes I can control the tracks fade, volume, everything I'm able to control. This is also possible when I make a new project and add music from iTunes.
So, this is possible in one project and all new projects.
But when I try to add music from iTunes to an existing project (all other 9 projects) the audio controls do not work. I can't mute the iTunes mp3 I can't fade it, NOTHING. Having bought my $6000 mac primarily for iMovie you can imagine how frustrating this is.
I've tried the following
Re-installing software
Deleting preferences
Clipping audio in garage band
Using different music, including different file types, eg .WAV
It's obviously a bug apple, please fix it asap.Hi
This is a User to User forum - Apple rarely drops in to have a read.
Give them feedback if there is a bug (that can be repeated)
How about this.

Audio problems in imovie.
When I add a sound track to iMovie it becomes filled with static. Help!!
Is this a pre-recorded sound track, or a live one?
If it is live, you need to double-check your input/volume levels, and what your input source is. -
IMovie audio problems when burning in Toast 6
Hi,
i've tried to burn an imovie project in idvd 5 but i get 'the error #-1 was reported' like most people have been and i've tried loads of things suggested to fix it with no joy.
I then sent the imovie project to toast titanium 6 where it burned fine. However, when i watched it i noticed that although toast had picked up all the audio (both dv audio and aiff), it did not pick up all the volume adjustments during the movie. how annoying! for example: i have an aiff clip that fades into a movie clip with the sound gradually going down but Toast picks up the sound staying at the same level. this also happens with volume adjustments in a DV file.
Any suggestions why this happens / how i can fix it?
Cheers,
AndyAndy,
This question is really in the wrong place - this is the iDVD '08 forum and not the iDVD 5 forum.
From the description of your problem using Toast, it sounds like you didn't actually export a DV video movie out of iMovie.
Export a DV video movie out of iMovie (it will run 13 GB per hour) and play it back with the QuickTime Player to see if the audio settings you made are really there. If this movie plays OK, you can bring IT into iDVD or Toast for turning it into a DVD.
If the DV video movie you created STILL has audio problems in the QuickTime Player, ask you question about THAT issue in the correct iMovie forum.

I have a problem with iMovie '11. I record the audio with the Zoom H1 and I wanted to sync it with iMovie. But after 5 minutes the audio indicator in iMovie is empty and it doesn't playback the rest of the 10 minute audio file. It's working in QuickTime X, iTunes and VLC.
Have yoiu tried exporting it from Quick Time (you'll need QuickTime 7 Pro) or from iTunes to somehting like an ACC file and then improting that to iMovie.

IMovie HD - Urgent Audio Problem!
I've been working on a video for my Chinese final and iMovie HD 5.0.2 has been working until now. No matter what I do, all of the audio is skipping. The audio I'm using is either embedded audio imported from my HD Video Camera, a music file, or a sound effect clip. The music and sounds are all .mp3.
The sound gradually started getting worse and now nothing I'm doing is making a difference. I can't find an update that will fix my problem. I've already ordered iLife 09 so I can use the newest version of iMovie, but I need this to work right now. This project is due tomorrow and it would have been done if not for the audio problems. Again, I have iMovie HD 5.0.2
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.Thank you again for your help. I didn't realize I was so far behind on the iMovie series. I downloaded the newest one and it worked great as far as importing the video without bars. The video was from a Sony widescreen SD video camera and I used MPEG Streamclip to confirm the video was true 16:9 but for some reason iMovie HD just squished it to the right. Anyway, I noticed on the new iMovie it only has the option for 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio. So is it not as good as iMovie HD even thought it's newer? Oh well, guess I'll cross that bridge when I get an HD camcorder.

Hello,
I am using iMovie '09 (version 8.0.4). I have created a movie with mp3 audio files playing in the background with the clip volume at 0. The video clips are interspersed with some images every now and then as well as transitions. The movie plays quite well when i preview it in iMovie.
I then share the movie with iDVD (version 7.0.4). When I play the movie in iDVD, almost the entire thing plays perfectly except for this one little part. In that little part, audio from some clip starts playing along with the background music.
More things about my project:
1. I am using audio ducking only once, I know where it is in the timeline and it is working just fine
2. Where the problem occurs, I have looked if I might be doing something wrong in precision editor. Turns out I am not using precision editor on the clips where the audio problem occurs at all
3. All video clips around where the porblem occurs are at a volume of 0
I am confused. Please help.
Thanks.Hi
*No audio on DVD disc.*
Most common origin.
1 Imported audio from iTunes.
• In iTunes copy out as an audio-CD .aiff
• Use this in Your movie project
2 Strange audio formats like .mp3, .avi etc.
• Change them to .aiff. Use an audio editor like Audacity (free)
3 Main audio is set to off in System Preferences - Does this by it self - Don’t know why
Cheque Audio-Out resp. Audio-In
4. Ed Hanna
Had the same problem; some Googling around gave me a kludgy, but effective fix
Downgrade Perian from recent versions back to version 1.0.
That worked for me, and so far I haven't encountered any deficiencies—except it takes more advanced versions of Perian to enable QuickTime to handle subtitles in .srt format—that I have noticed.
Before burning the DVD.
• Do a DiskImage (File menu and down)
• Double click on the .img file
• Test it with Apple DVD-player
If it’s OK then make Your DVD.
Burn at x1 speed.... (or x4)
• In iDVD 08 - or - 09
• Burn from DiskImage with Apple Disk Util tool
• OR burn with Roxio Toast™ if You got it

Audio problems after exporting out of iMovie
Aloha!
I have a 48 minute movie created in imovie with lots of audio, clips and transitions. It works perfectly when I preview or play it in iMovie. When I try to share it to iDvd, export to iDvd, or to save it as a Quicktime movie, it looks great for several minutes, then the audio tracks get messed up. The correct audio is there, but overlayed on it is snippets from farther into the project, or whole tracks from later in the project, or places where the audio drops out completely. I spent about 70 hours creating this movie and really want to burn it to DVD so I can play it on the big screen. I did burn one version to dvd, and it looked and sounded great - until the audio problems began... any help would be greatly appreciated.
In Garage Band there is a feature where you can consolidate your bits into one track - should I be doing something in iMovie after I finish it before I export it?what kind of speed changes do you mean? If you mean using some clips in slo-mo (with the sound dropped out) then yes I used a LOT of them... but they are also working fine for the first several minutes...

Imovie 11 9.04 did not fix audio problem
I have been making an hour long movie for some time now. I originally started the movie in imovie 09 and it had problems with the movie freezing. I updated to imovie 11 and was pleasantly surprised to find that it worked again. I recently began having problems with imovie 11 9.02 when the sound began sounding crackly and the first few words of each clip were inaudible, I upgraded to version 9.04 but still no luck on the sound. A member mentioned reverting to 9.0, but I am not sure how this is done, I uploaded the latest versions from the new app store and am worried of losing any of the movie if I revert back. Any help will be greatly appreciated. This project is well over due and with all the problems beginning in 09 has taken well over two years. Does anyone know when the next upgrade patch will be out.
thanks
AIf you still have the clip on the phone (and in the future) I would suggest you import directly into iMovie from your phone.
If you have iMovie 11, connect your iPhone via the connector cable to your Mac. If iPhoto or iTunes starts, you can quit those.
Open iMovie.
Then click the Import from Camera icon, or click FILE/IMPORT.../FROM CAMERA.
If your only copy is in iPhoto, I am not sure why you are not seeing it, but I would suggest as a workaround that you in iPhoto, you right-click on the video clip and reveal in Finder. Then Copy and Paste it to your Desktop. Then, in iMovie, FILE/IMPORT MOVIE. -
FCP7 Capture Settings - HDV Audio
I am capturing just fine with FCP 7 and a Canon HV30 camcorder. However, I would like to be able to turn off the audio monitoring while the capturing is in progress.
Previous versions of FCP did not have audio monitoring with HDV cameras, and wasn't a problem. Now, I can't get it to be quiet without muting my system audio.
The HDV capture settings are not editable, nor can I duplicate the preset.
The capture window clip settings does not include a preview toggle.
Any ideas?bump... HDV audio monitoring during capture, I have been unable to figure out how to shut it off.

I have tried making disc image, burning disc and the audio will pause for second several times in the play back. It does not do it when playing back in iDVD.
The slide show was started in iPhoto and sent to iDVD. I have started over several times and still same issue. Makes a bad impression and is really not useable for presentation.
I have 30 gigs free space, changed settings to Professional encoding and still same issue. I have no open apps, changed all energy settings and screen saver to never.
Any ideas, I am fresh out, never had this problem with previous version.
FrustratedAndy,
This question is really in the wrong place - this is the iDVD '08 forum and not the iDVD 5 forum.

Answer to no audio problem!!!
Ok, I figured out a way to get around this. Import your iMovie file into a quicktime movie, then use that in your iDVD project. This retains both the audio in the iMovie file and also the chapter markers.

I also experience no sound when working with imovie/iDVD. I rectify this problem by going through a litany of adjustments such as: Going to system preferences and uncheck the mute button; Going to Imovie pref. and uncheck audio passthrough box; Going to the upper right pulldown
and moving the sound level button up; Disconnecting the Fire Wire after exporting to tape; Quit/open imovie: Repair permissions; Run DiskWarrior, and some other adjustments I can't recall just now. I just keep trying things until it comes back. Why it does this I can't explain.
