HDV Capture Slow in PPro CS6

I am experiencing what feels like very slow capture times when capturing live HDV footage through FireWire.
I am shooting in my home studio with a Canon HV20 HDV thru FireWire.
It takes about half the time length of the clip for PPro to insert it into the Project Panel, while the Windows Aero wheel is spinning.
And then another several seconds for it to conform it or whatever it's doing when the orange progress bar is working in the bottom right of the screen.
So a one minute clip takes about 30 seconds for PPro to insert it into the Project Panel and another several seconds to conform it.
Is this typical for a PC with the following components?
i7 2600K
16GB RAM
GTX 470
850 Watt PSU
C: Drive is 120GB SSD (Where PPro Program is)
E: Drive is 3TB Barracuda (Scratch Disk For Capture)
F: Drive is 1TB Barracuda (Media Cache and Media Cache Database)
I've run Virus scans and have MS Security Essential running realtime.
I've also optimized Windows by trimming what runs at Startup and what services can run.
I've run the RAM-checking program on it and all is good.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks.

No, not editing until is conformed.
Does this sound like too long to you?

I can't preview my HDV footage in Premiere Pro CS6.

    Thanks Ann!
    I just figured it out.
I'm using 2 monitors in extended mode.
One is a VGA flat panel and the other is a DVI flat panel.
I had the Capture Window open on my VGA monitor.
When I moved the Capture Window to my DVI monitor, I got a preview picture.
It's funny, when I move the Capture Window from the DVI to the VGA while playing, playing stops.
And when I move it bak to the DVI, it continues to play.
Maybe because the VGA isn't digital?
Both monitos are hooked up to my GTX 470 GPU, so it seems wierd.
Any feedback on this would be welcomed.
    Thanks again!

  • HDV capture not working in CS6

In CS6 when I try to capture footage the program crashes. Capture still works in CS5.5 and other apps. I tried to capture through Prelude (video from Adobe - Jason Levine - says cameras will show up in the file list) but nothing shows. I have a Sony HVR-M15U deck.
    Any ideas?

  • Updating the Project Panel in PPro CS6 is horrendously slow! (But nothing else is affected)

Anytime I make a change to the project panel whether it's moving a clip to a folder, adding a description, or anything.... it freezes up for around 20 seconds before it does anything?! All other performance of PPro CS6 is fine - Timeline, Source and Program monitors, Effects window - none of these are slow, only in the project panel do I have an issue...
Does anyone know what may be causing this?
    Thanks all!

    I am updated to CS6.0.5
I have it in list view
I just tested it and it only seems to happen with this project
I have an NVidia GeForce 8800GT driver version 314.07
I haven't changed anything with my disk setup or my computer - I have 4 HDD's one is my system HDD, one has my Footage and Projects, one has all the preview/render files (Scratch disk), and the last one has archives of older Footage and projects
This problem affects everything in the project panel, no specific filetypes or anything.
There are quite a few clips in this project - over 400 clips - would that be causing this?
I am doing behind the scenes for a film and I keep adding to this project...
    Thanks guys!

  • Windows PPro CS6 (evaluation version) crashes when opening (simple) projects

    Hi.
I'm encountering a problem in Windows 7 x64 with PPro CS6 (installed as part of the evaluation version of the Master Collection). It occurs both with the version I downloaded using the Adobe download helper tool, and the patched version (that is, after applying the bunch of updates of the master collection). I can reproduce it reliably:
    1) Open PPro, create a new project and a sequence (HDV).
    2) Add a MTS clip into the project, put it to the sequence.
    3) Save the project
    4) Close PPro, Restart it
    5) Open the project that was just saved
What happens is that the application simply crashes/becomes unresponsive. In the monitor window I see that yellow-ish image telling me that media files are being loaded. I can't say PPro is a very useful application when it does not support to open projects xD.
What can I do? I simply assume that this behavior is not a feature, so.... maybe the problem is with my system configuration? Note that I do not have QuickTime installed, and I don't intend to do so (I'm avoding anything remotely related to Apple).

Why would you put an AVCHD clip into an HDV sequence?
HDV is specific to video from a HiDef TAPE camera, not a file from a newer type of camera

  • No preview for hdv capture window

When I try to capture hdv I am not getting a preview of the footage in the capture window while browsing the footage. I realize that I will not get a preview while capturing but I should get the preview while just browsing through the footage yet all I get is a black screen. I do have full control of the camera via premiere and the captures do actualy work. This used to work fine with cs3 but stopped working with cs4. The regular DV capture works fine with the preview. Its a sony fx1 hdv camera. Also when I click on capture setting nothing happens but if set to dv capture the capture settings give me options including preview settings.
    Thanks in advance.

Well, it's actually a sad shortcoming of Premiere CS4.
I'm new to PPro, and CS4 is my first, in fact I'm new to video. What little I know, I've been doing with Final Cut.
So the answer to your question is actually "it's by design", hence my commentary.
    Ref: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/PremierePro/4.0/WS00B136B2-33DB-49a0-B247-6521242FDBDAa.html
On the Mac, it's actually worse - HDV capture preview is totally non-existent.
    http://www.macworld.com/article/136525/2008/11/pprocs4.html
It's a minor annoyance for me, and it could still "grow" on me - since video isn't being transferred to PC while previewing, there is no perceived delay, and the keyboard shortcuts, I and O, are the same (with FCP).
Landed on this post after searching for what I thought was a capture setting problem, and also found the above links that answered it for me. Hope this helps.

  • HDV Capturing Problem.

    Hey,
I'll start real quick by getting to the point and stateing my problem.
When captureing HDV 1080i tape footage, it just stops randomly
after about 4-8 clips. Different each time. Heh.
Now I'll give you some information on my equipment, ect...
    Computer
    Windows 7
    Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T6400 @ 2.00HGz (2CPUs), ~2.0GHz
    4 GB RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
    Software
    Adobe Premeire Pro CS5
    Hardware
Sony GV-HD700 Digital HD Videocassette Recorder
Boss usually gives me just regular DV footage to work with.
This time he's given me an HDV 1080i wedding.
    1. I set up my project...
    2. Set Capture Footage to HDV.
    3. Set my Scratch Disk.
    4. Set Sequence Presets to HDV 1080i30 (60i)
    5. Set my Tape Recorder to HDV (instead of DV that I usually work in.)
    6. Here's a picture of my capture screen letting me control it,
        but not letting me Record.
    7. Click Settings and switch over the DV and capture it, just to see if it works. It
does but its only in 720. So basiclly didnt work. Derp.
    8. Look around some more and find somone saying to go to the Tape Recorder,
and change the i.LNK CONV to OFF. I do that. Also set my capture device
to Sony, Standard, because a guy said it worked for him with the same Tape
Recorder I have. Also because GV-HD700 isn't even available.
    9. Open Capture again and Record button shows up. Yay right? No. I hit record
and it dosent really capture anything... Dunno why. It plays the tape on the
        recorder but dosen't capture. Here's a picture...
    10. So then I I'm like, what does this Tape Button do?
    11. Make sure I have Scene Detect ON. Then I click TAPE.
    12. Then it starts captureing footage! Yay right? Heres a picture..
    13. Everythings going great. I can't see the footage on my screen, but that doesn't
seem to be a big deal. The footage is playing and I can see clips captureing.
Then it just Stops. Just Stops captureing. The tape keeps playing. But no more
captureing. What is the problem here? I'm out of ideas and I don't know what to
    do anymore.
Hope someone can help me out.

3 - 1T WD all video files... input & output files

Trying to use only ONE Hard Drive for Video Editing
You are a music conductor, with a baton that you use to point to various parts of the orchestra... this is like Windows pointing to various parts of the hard drive to do Windows housekeeping or to load program segments for various functions
Now, at the same time and with the same hand... while still using the baton to conduct the orchestra... pick up a bow and play a fiddle... this would be doing something with your video file at the same time as all the other work
You as a person cannot do both at the same time with the same hand
A computer is a LITTLE better, in that it can switch from one kind of task to another very quickly... but not quickly enough for EASY video editing
You need AT LEAST two hard drives (separate drives, never a partition http://forums.adobe.com/thread/650708?tstart=0 for more) with Windows (or Mac OS) and software on your boot drive, and video files on a 2nd drive so the boot drive is not slowed down by trying to do everything
I find that the three drives I use work very well for me, for editing AVCHD video... some people use a 4th drive, so video INPUT files are on drive three and all OUTPUT files are on drive four... I only bought a mid-tower case instead of a full tower case (my bad... but had to fit in the space available on my office desk!) so I use the three drives that will fit
Depending on your exact hardware (motherboard brand & model AND USB2 enclosure brand & model AND external hard drive brand & model) AND the type of video file, you may... or may NOT... be able to use an external USB2 hard drive for SD (Standard Definition) video editing
Steve Grisetti in the Premiere Elements forum http://forums.adobe.com/thread/856208?tstart=0 and Jim Simon in the Premiere Pro forum http://forums.adobe.com/thread/856433?tstart=0 use USB externals for editing
A USB3 hard drive connected to a motherboard with USB3 is supposed to be fast enough for video editing (I don't have such, so don't know) but eSata DOES have a fast enough data transfer for video editing... I have not used this eSata Dock... for reference only, YMMV and all the usual disclaimers

  • Canon AH X1 HDV Capture

It took me a couple of days to figure this out, but from some other discussions I have read here some people are still trying to figure this one out. I hope this helps those still having trouble.
I could not capture HDV into Premiere CS5. The capture window would say device offline and the record button was grayed out. However, DV worked fine. I went through the XH A1 menus over and over, and everything said HDV, including the front dial of the camera - HDV was lit, not DV. I searched through the web and was able to piece together the solution.
The XH A1 does not allow certain menu options when the firewire cable is connected to the camera. So, when I was seeing the DV downconvert option grayed out on the camera VCR/Play menu, I assumed that meant it was off, or unavailable. Wrong!
I turned off the camera and disconnected the firewire cable. I then turned the camera on to VCR/Play and opened the menu. The DV downconvert option was no longer grayed out; it was available and it was set to ON. I changed that to OFF, turned off the camera, reconnected, etc. I selected HDV 1080i and opened capture. It worked. I could capture HDV 1080i.
Of course. the blue screen appears in the capture window saying HDV is being captured - there is no real-time monitoring of HDV capture like there is in DV.
Bottom line: set the camera options before you connect the firewire cable. The DV downconvert is set to ON by default. Make sure it is set to OFF.

Im having the same problem as you by the sound of it (apart from Im using CS3). I can capture in SD in Premiere Pro CS3, but not in HDV. I've looked at the capture settings and the only option I have is "DV Capture". Am i right in thinking that there should be an option in this drop down box called something like "HDV Capture"?
I have shot some footage on my Canon XH A1s in HDV, but after using countless converters I have come back to PP CS3. I tried HD Split first of all, but the files it creates,".m2t", don't work in PP CS3. Can any of you guys suggest a converter to take these .m2t files and convert them to AVI's?
Also, any help you can offer me with PPro CS3 would be very much appreciated. I have got the Canon Progressive HDV preset on my computer, so I can start a HDV project I just can't capture from it. On the capture window however, I can control the camera using Pley, Stop, Pause, Fwd, Rew etc. But the record/capture button, is greyed out. Any ideas?
Any information you can supply me with would be fantasitc and much Appreciated.
    Cheers guys.

  • Does PPro CS6 support PNY K6000?

I found out that PPro CS6 supports the following combination: PNY Quadro 6000 w/ Tesla C2075.
What about the Quadro K6000? Can PPro at least leverage the same performance from the K6000 as it would have from the (non-K)6000 or is it not supported at all?
If the latter, as of when will the compatibility be rolled out to end users?

  • 5.1.4 update breaks HDV capture? Unable to Initialize Capture Device

    Problem:
Final Cut Pro cannot capture standard 1080i60 HDV footage from Sony FX1 camcorder. FCP reports "Unable to Initialize Capture Device" when the log and capture window is opened. However, the footage CAN be captured in iMovie (which is interesting, and unacceptable). When HDV>DV downconvert option on camcorder is activated, footage CAN be captured as anamorphic SD, so the camcorder and FW do work.
The problem is occuring on a rock-solid FCP system that I use on a regular basis (mainly for SD editing). It has been approx 2 weeks since I last attempted a HDV capture, the system has been working great with SD footage (still does).
Factors that have changed to my knowledge since HDV capture was last functioning properly:
*Added a new external FW drive into regular usage (a different brand than normally used, no issues with it so far).
*Updated FCP to 5.1.3, and then 5.1.4 when that fix came out. All SD captures and work have been fine so far.
Here's what's interesting...I had a copy of the FCP v5.0.4 .app that I had saved an archive of prior to the crossgrade update. Guess what? I can load it up, and it captures HDV without any problems! With that in mind, this looks like an FCP 5.1.4 issue. But I am at a loss on how to proceed further in troubleshooting. Many thanks in advance for any assistance.

    ---NOTES---
    What I have tried:
*Attempted capture with a different Sony FX1 camcorder.
*Swapped firewire cables and system firewire ports.
*Attempted capture with camera FW chained to an external HDD.
*Unplugged all other external firewire devices from the system.
*Trashed FCP prefs using FCP Rescue 5, created new project using Easy Setup (for HDV).
*Tried different variations of FCP A/V settings, tried all the HDV FW device control presets and the HDV AIC capture preset.
*Per instructions at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852 I removed the numbered Quicktime pckg Receipts and re-installed the latest version (7.13). Post-install/reboot, I repaired Disk Prefs and Verified the disk using Disk Util.
*Have also attempted installing QT 7.13 2 and 3 times in a row, also trying disk prefs repair BEFORE the post-install reboot.
    Final Cut Pro Audio/Video Settings:
    Sequence Preset: HDV-1080i60
    Capture Preset: HDV
Device Control Preset: Sony HDV Firewire
    Sony HDR-FX1 IN/OUT REC settings:
    *VCR HDV/DV: HDV
    *COMPONENT: 1080i/480i
    *i.LINK CONV: OFF
    *TV TYPE: 16:9
    *A/V->DV OUT: OFF
    System/Software Facts:
    *Final Cut Pro 5.1.4
    *Quicktime 7.13
    *PPC Mac G5 2.7 Dual (2.5GB RAM)
*35GB free on System, 45GB free on internal FCP Scratch disk
    Final Cut Pro 5.1.4, G5 DP 2.7 (PPC) Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I think I figured out this vexing problem. I too was having the same issue. Check to see that your Quicktime is newer than 7.1.2. If it isn't you'll have to upgrade it. I only upgraded to 7.1.6 here because I was afraid of going to a really new version. http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime716formac.html. After I upgraded my quicktime, I ran software update and the Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 update appeared. I hoipe this helps.

  • How can I get PPro CS6 timeline to correctly show clip stretched in AE?

I have a 2 second clip in my timeline in PPro CS6 that I want to stretch to roughly 18 seconds.  I did the following steps:
    1. right clicked on the clip in the timeline and chose Replace with AE composition
    2. when AE opened, I clicked on stretch in the composition and stretched it to 1000%
    3. I changed the composition settings to reflect the new duration of 18 seconds so I could view the entire clip in the timeline
    4. With the footage highlighted, I went to layer/frame blending and picked frame mix
    5. on the composition timeline, I toggled the frame blending on
    6. saved the AE composition
    7.  Back in PPro, the clip is now pink and shows that it's a linked AE composition, but the length of the clip has not changed and therefore only plays the 1st 2 seconds of the clip
In order to see the entire AE linked clip, I have to either click on the AE linked clip that shows in the project panel, down to the timeline or right click on the clip already in the timeline and choose speed/duration.  Unlock the link between duration & speed and change the duration to the length of the AE stretched clip, leaving the speed at 100%.
My question, how can I make the AE linked clip automatically show correctly in PPro?
Also a related question, since the composition is a linked compostion in AE, the frame blending box isn't available on the composition timeline so I have to go to Layer/Frame blending to turn frame blending on.  Is this correct?  If so, how can you set the quality to draft or best?  Also should I pick frame mix or pixel motion to get the smoothest frame blending?

Fuzzy and Ann are correct in my opinion. Premiere Pro thinks that the duration on the timeline is just the first part of a clip that has been given a rather long handle, so to speak.
Just drag it out as far as it goes. Premiere Pro will not let you drag it out farther than the end of the comp under these particular circumstances.
Why not do that automagically for you? Too dangerous. What would it do with anything on the sequence out to the right of the clip? Overwrite it or push it?
Now, I suppose that a good way to do that would be to alert you about the problem when you return to Premiere Pro and ask you how you want it handled, but that would take a Feature Request. And I am not sure what would need to happen if you had made a bunch of changes to other links other than that one before returning to Premiere Pro.
Before I suggest that you do that, I have to ask why you didn't  just use the Time Remapping feature of Premiere Pro do do the same job. That way Premiere Pro would have known what you wanted to do. I understand that Timewarp and Time Remapping both have different strong and weak points, I am just curious if you tested both and decided on using After Effects for a particular reason.

  • Are there benefits to the Blackmagic Intensity Pro for HDV capture ?

Are there benefits to the Blackmagic Intensity Pro for HDV capture ?
    I have a Sony HDR-FX1 that records in HDV 1440 x 1080
I have already captured the footage to miniDV tape.
Can the intensity card get the full 1920 x 1080 video ?
I now use Premiere to capture my video and my HDV is in mpeg2 and my SD is in DV type 2 AVI
What format does the intensity card capture at ?
Are there other ways to capture that would make the footage better.
From what I have read allot of people have had problems with these cards.
Im just looking for the best way to get the footage off my camera with the best resolution.
    Thanks:  Glenn

    Glenn,
I have posted this before in the PC Buying Guide (post #23 and later), but have a look at this diagram:
The problem is that once recorded to tape, the material is compressed to MPEG and there is no way to get the data back, that were lost during compression. The only thing you achieve is that you lose device control, lose all timecode information, lose all metadata like date and timestamp and exposure data and lose the capability of scene detection. There are no gains to compensate the losses.
Compare it to a glass of orange juice, that was made by heavily compressing oranges. How do you think you can reconstruct the original oranges that the juice came from? Were there 4 large oranges or 6 small ones or a mixture? Were they light colored or were they dark or a mixture of light and dark?
BlackMagic in their marketing may lead you to believe otherwise, but the truth is they can only guess at how many oranges were used, their size and color. It is nothing more than a guess.
