HDV clips out of FCP to After Effects.... Settings???

Hi,
I am capturing my HDV clips with the apple intermediate codec 1080. And exporting like that to. But when I make a 1080 comp. in AE it is square. I turn the 4:3 aspect ratio off but to no avail. Any idea what I need to make my settings in the AE comp.
Thanks a bunch

Does it look squished horizontally? If so, make sure there are no 'anamorphic' settings checked in AE, or in your export settings out of FCP. That would make it look square.

  • Quicktime playback bright and gray, compared to FCP or After Effects

OK, this is so confusing, I have been working with Quicktime for years but I can't seem to resolve this issue:
I bought a MacPro (Xeon) and for some reason all the clips I create in Final Cut Pro or After Effects don't play back correctly in Quicktime. That is, unless I use the 'Animation' codec, then they play fine. But the strange thing is, whether I use DVCPRO HD, DV, or H.264, they all play back too bright and gray in Quicktime. But when I import that same file into either FCP or After Effects it looks like the original composition.
SO- the color is there, it just doesn't play back properly in Quicktime. The truly strange thing is that I tested the same clips on my other Intel and my G5 and the clips play back fine on those. After reinstalling Quicktime the same issue persists on my Mac Pro.
Any ideas why this might be happening??
Thanks in advance to the wizard who can help me clear this up!

This works out fairly well. I'll give you two options on one stage of it:
    1. Go to the first frame of your troublesome movie, Command-B to Select None, then do a Copy.
    2. Open Preview.app, Command-N to make a new document that looks a lot like that frame you just copied. Once you see it, do a Copy.
3.1. In QuickTime Player, Command-N and Command-V to make a single frame movie of that image.
3.2. A different way, do a Save from Preview, to make a JPEG. Open that JPEG in QuickTime Player, Option-Right Arrow to get to the end.
    4. Go to the original movie, Select All and Copy. Back to the new movie, do a Paste.
At this point you either have a movie that is Video compressed for the first frame, or JPEG compressed, depending on whether you did 3.1 or 3.2. In most cases I would choose 3.2.
Do a Save As, Self Contained, and you should have a movie where the first frame gets repeated, and the movie is forced into RGB mode.

  • Aspect Ratio HDV clip from FCP to After Effects

Can someone help me with exporting from FCP an HDV clip to After Effects? What I am doing is trying to export an HDV clip from FCP to AE but when I import it into AE the aspect ratio is all off. I have an HDV 1080i50 easy setup timeline and I am exporting from that as a quicktime movie (not conversion) with the current settings. When I bring that into AE I have a HDV comp set up and I drop the FCP movie into that comp. My FCP movie is 1920 X 1080 and is bigger thant the AE HDV Comp. Why? Shouldn't the sizes be the same since they are HDV? Please help
    Tim

HDV is 1440 x 1080 native so if you have output from FCP that is 1920 x 1080 it is being misinterpreted by AFX.
Try creating a new comp in AFX using the HDV easy setup but set the frame size to 1920 x 1080 manually and see what that does.

  • Roundtripping between FCP and After Effects CS3

What is the best way to get clips from a FCP timeline into After Effects, and then back again? How do i do this without purchasing any additional plugins?
Also, how do i get an entire sequence into After Effects and then back into Final Cut Studio?
Yes, i admit i'm at a very beginning stage of my expertise, but i will apreciate any help in mastering these techniques.

Yeah...if you want separate clips, you cannot do this without Automatic Duck Pro Export for After Effects. YOu can export a self contained file and import that, then export out of AE and back into FCP.
Or use Motion., as Tony says.

  • XDCam footage exported from FCP to After Effects and back to FCP stutters

I need help. Here is the situation:
XDCam footage imported into Final Cut with the Sony Import Software 25 mpbs. Final Cut sequence is set up to match all settings. The footage is placed into the sequence fine, I can edit with no problems everything works great. The problems start when I export from Final Cut to bring it into After Effects 7.0.
I drag the imported footage onto the comp icon to create a new comp with the footage settings. The footage is being interpreted as upper field first. I render out the footage using the HDV codec that matches my sequence in Final Cut. When I import the rendered movie into Final Cut it causes the whole system to bog way down. Not just dropped frames but a serious amount of bog down, I even get the spinning Beachball for a few seconds while its trying to play. It should be noted that when I place the rendered movie in the sequence it doesn't seem to need any rendering. Now, here's the weird part, when I play the rendered movie using just the quicktime app. It plays just fine. The problem only seems to be with Final Cut.
    any suggestions?

    Hi,
I was having the same problem. After studying the mov as rendered by AE it would seem that there's something odd about the framsize. It would seem that AE's HDV preset is incompatible with FCP for some reason. There's probably a perfectly reason tech explanation for this but I don't know it.
I was told by a friend to always render 'intermediate codec' which I intend to do in future.
As a short-term measure just run the files through Compressor, that did the trick for me.

  • Export to FCP from After Effects

I am exporting an After Effects file to FCP that I have created. What is the best setting in After Effects to get the best picture into FCP. I have been using the DV setting on rending out from AE but When I import in to FCP I get Lines running through the video. I have tried using De-interlace effects on it but it does not seem to help much. Is there a better setting for export from AE to FCP. Any help would be great.

    Depends.
What is your sequence preset in FCP?
I'm assuming DV NTSC. I would render to the Apple DV codec so that FCP will play back the clip without rendering. If you are field rendering choose Lower Field First, and if you're field rendering you may also need to be separating the fields on your footage items, also Lower Field First. And of course your comp must be 720x480 29.97fps.
Unfortunately there are many places where you can screw up the render in AE, not just the render stage. But as long as you do everything right the playback in FCP should be good.

  • Transfer FCP to After Effects CS5 XML Errors??

I seem to be having a problem. I am working on a music video and need to put some final touches on it, mainly using the remove noise tool to get some grain out of a few shots that had bad lighting. I found a way to transfer my Final Cut Pro project to After Effects using XML with an AE script called FCP2AE. I placed it in my AE scripts folder, went to Final Cut Pro, selected my video, exported to XML and then went into AE to run the script which would allow me to open the Final Cut XML file (which is what the instructions told me to do). But for some reason everytime I try to open the XML file nothing happens at all. After Effects just sits there, it wont import the file. If I click on it AE says, "After Effects error: Can't import file "export.jsx": unsupported filetype or extension."
Does anyone know why it is doing this? I would like to try and avoid exporting a Final Cut clip then importing to AE then exporting back out to Final Cut and importing all over again. If anyone has any answers please let me know. Thanks!

Are you using the proper version of the "plug-in" for +your version+ of AE? I've used this plugin with AE CS3 & FCP, flawlessly, many times.
So, I would contact Popcorn Island, the place you got the plug-in from. When I needed some tech support they were quick and on-point. Though I got the developer's direct email address after posting a comment, when I had issues. Contact me directly at kevincbrock at gmail DOT com. And I'll give you Ross's email address.

  • Is there a way to export an HDV project out to tape (FX1) after Export?

I know I can import HDV footage from the FX1 into FCP5, perform edits and then "Print to Tape" (FX1), but is there a particular format I need to export to, to be able to created a file for import into a new Project for "Print to Tape"?
In other words how do I export an edited HDV File back to tape frm within FCP5?

I import footage from 2 diff tapes (Cam Angles) of a Cooking show taping.
I edited the clips together and added titling
I then exported the Project out (Current Settings) to a single file
I open that file in After Effects to add Motion Graphics
I export that back out in the HDV format
Now I want to export that file to tape by importing into FCP5 HDV project and doing a "Print to Tape" command. But when I do this I get serious frame drop outs.
I hope that made my situation a little clearer.

  • Mac to PC, FCP to After Effects--Quicktime not recognized!  HELP!

    Hello,
I searched far and wide and can't come up with anyone having answered this question after it's been asked by many before me!
    I am editing on FCP4 (G5--Quicktime 6 pro).
I want to do After Effects (6.5) work on my PC (HP 3ghz, 1 gig RAM,)
I am not compressing any files. I capture the files in FCP from mini-DV. Then I take the captured file from the mac into the pc.
Here's where it all goes bad. The PC does not recognize the file as anything. Quicktime will open and play it, but I can't open it in After Effects at all.
I have read that if I had Quicktime Pro in the PC I can just SAVE AS the file with another name and all will be cool. But the last thing I want to is is spend another $30 on Quicktime only to have this not be true.
Any ideas? Answers? Reasons for this problem?
    Please help me!
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

The thing is I don't want to compress it at all. I just want to take the captured footage out of the Mac and into the PC.
Since the Mac captures it as a Quicktime file, this shouldn't be a problem--but it is.
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks again,
    Mike

  • FCP and After Effects Windows: best codec?

I still do a lot of FCP7 editing using Apple ProRes codec on my Mac. Since I recently acquired a very fast PC, I plan on using it for work on After Effects. I'll be moving renders from FCP7 to AE and vice-versa. I noticed AE on Windows lacks the ProRes codec.  I've tried rendering in AE using Lossless in both QT and AVI but when importing to FCP there's a very noticeable color difference...
What's my best course of action here?

pretty sure you can get the prores codecs for windows from apple

  • Fcp and after effects

is after effects compatible with fcp - what programs do you guys use/recomend? ive heard of something called jahshaka? or is this cheap and dodgy?

What do you mean by "compatible?" You can export QT files that you can import into After Effects, and AE can export a QT movie that you can import into FCP. But you cannot import AE projects into FCP like you can with Premiere Pro. MOTION is the application you use with FCP...for Motion Graphics. Or you can use Shake for compositing...but a lot of us use AE with FCP.

  • Workflow Circuit between FCP and After Effects with HDV

I am trying to set up a workflow circuit with FCP 5.1.1 and AE 7.0 using HDV. We are:
    1. building sequences with FCP
    2. exporting to AE
    3. adding in FX with AE
    4. putting those back into FCP
The footage we are using is compressed with HDV 1080i60 in FCP.
My problem is finding the correct way to export the HDV with FCP. I have tried using Quicktime Conversion but the only option I can find for uncompressed video didn't work when we tried to transfer it.
I think the main problem is that the AE work is being done on PCs and the video that we have tried sending can't be read by PCs. The audio plays through fine but the video shown is nonexistent.
What conversion should we use in FCP that allows us to keep the video uncompressed and in its best quality for use in AE? And what works best on the AE end of it?
Can someone give some advice on steps that they would or have taken for a project of the same ilk.
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

What's your system setup? What FX exactly (e.g. color correction, or just random FX thrown in every now and then)? What went wrong when you tried using an uncompressed codec?
    1) If everything's on an external FAT32 formatted drive (fat chance, get it?), then i think you could export a quicktime reference of your timeline (choose the option that ends up giving u a tiny file). Then plug the drive into your PC, load the Quicktime Ref (also known as QT Ref) into AE7 and FX away. Then export a QT with HDV 1080i60 specs and reimport into FCP.
    2) If you're only doing occsional FX (e.g. gun flashes, lasers from robots, etc..), and nothing that encompasses the entire length of the project (e.g. color correction), you could export a hashed down QT Conversion of the timeline with whatever decent codec that works (e.g. DV NTSC). Then import into AE7, lay down the video, add your effects. But then before you export your FX, turn OFF your original video layer so all your FX are on a transparent background. Export clips with alpha channel and reimport those into FCP.
    3) Ensure that the PC is using the latest version of quicktime. It may need to be upgraded to whatever version is on the Mac, and it may need to be registered as Pro.

  • HDV clips out of sync in viewer window and timeline. (Final Cut 5)

Hey there, just new to HDV and already hitting problems. On all my clips the video and audio are out of sync in final cut (watching them back on quicktime they're fine) when I view them and then once they've been rendered on the time line.
I've changed the settings on the project and sequences to match the clips, but its helped none.
Anyone have any ideas? Any you have would be much appreciated, thanks.

  • Best way to go from FCP to After Effects and back?

    Hi guys,
What's the best way to go from FCP (5) to AE (7)? I'm exporting as a Quicktime Movie, but not self-contained. Then from AE I make a Quicktime Movie
and drag it back to FCP.
    Is this the best method?
