HDV compression not letterboxing

Howdy, folks!
I've searched the boards here, but am unable to find the answer to my question.
I'm shooting HDV footage, capturing and editing fine, but when I try to output to SD w/ letterboxing, as is requested, the video is always squeezed. What the heck is going on?
Sequence settings: 1440x1080 (HD 16x9; Pixel Aspect Ratio is HD (1440x1080) and anamorphic is NOT checked; QT Settings for Compressor are HDV 1080i60
Thanks, ahead of time!

I misspoke. The footage is P2 size (960x720) and the sequence settings are appropriately HD 960x720 (16:9) w/ a Pixel Aspect Ratio of HD 960x720 and Anamorphic is NOT checked. The QT Video Settings are DVCPRO HD 720p60. There is absolutely no problem editing the footage with these settings.
I've tried toggling Anamorphic, exporting "use Letterboxing if necessary", in the QT Export settings I'm using DV/DVCPRO - NTSC w/ dimensions of both 4:3 and 16:9 and a size of the same. None of this seems to letterbox the final output.
What I mentioned previously was a sequence issue when either dragging or pasting the footage into a 4:3 sequence - somehow half the footage letterboxed in the timeline, yet the other half became squished.
Two problems, neither of which I can figure. You guys are definitely putting me on the right track, and I appreciate it! Any thoughts on this new info?

  • HDV Compression Oddity?

I have searched everywhere for an answer to this; hopefully, someone here can help me. When editing HDV footage in FCP, I have noticed objects that should be stationary randomly moving from side to side slightly, while nothing else in the frame moves (the camera was locked down). For example, a photo lying on top of a dark piece of fabric appears to move from left to right slightly, even though the camera is locked down, and the dark background the photo is on top of does not move.
The objects that do appear to move do not move fast, and it is more like they "jump" over a few frames to the right, then a split second later "jump" a few frames to the left.
I am guessing this is a strange effect from the HDV compression scheme. Am I right? The footage was shot with a Canon XH A1, using the 30F mode. I am editing in a NTSC 1080i60 timeline.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Are you only seeing this in the canvas and viewer? The canvas is a low rez proxy, and only displays both fields if set to 100%.
You need to view it on an external monitor, or at least, if it's interlaced burn a dvd and view it on a TV. If it's progressive you could export a quicktime and view it on a computer monitor.
You may have no problem at all, or you may be correct and it's a compression artifact.

  • Export HD 720p to DVCAM tape (print to tape) 16:9 not letterboxed

    hi -
i'm trying to export an HD 720p24.00 project to DVCAM tape for projection at a film festival. i need to make sure the 16:9 aspect ratio is squished, not letterboxed, onto the DVCAM tape. what is the best way to go about doing all this? i am exporting to a DSR-11 DVCAM deck.
    thanks in advance.

    follow up:
actually, if the DV sequence is 24.00 fps, it won't play in an external monitor through my deck, nor will it print to video.
so now i'm trying to put the HD 720p sequence into a DV 23.98 sequence and render and we'll see if that works better.

  • Squished not letterbox

    I have a DV-ANAMORPHIC output - the show is widescreen 16:9.
Playback of DVD is not letterboxing on 4:3 TV - ANY THOUGHTS?

Brian... make sure you tell us if you indeed are using DVDSp...
You set your TV to 4:3 letterbox, yes? -- this would fix it for YOUR tv... but not the issue at hand.
OK -- in DVDSP... select the TRACK in the window where you have your tracks and menus...
Then, lower right window you'll see something that says... GENERAL TAB - DISPLAY MODES - 16:9 Letterbox (might have said 4:3)
That will force anamorphic 4:3 video to show as 16:9 with letterboxing on 4:3 TVs and without letterboxing on 16:9 widescreen tvs.
If you are using iDVD then that's another answer... what are you using?
    Good luck,

  • Crop 16x9 into 3x2 (not letterbox) without losing quality

I created a beautiful HVDVD_TS video that does not play on most VCR's.
I want to crop the width off each edge (not letterbox). I was successful in cropping off the edges in QT, but I lost quality (colors less vibrant). What is the best work flow?
In the FC forum, I tried two suggestions but both created an elongated video (16x9 squashed into a 3x2 despite using frame controls):
    1. For the best quality encode, put it through Compressor, select DVD Best Quality 90 mins and turn on Frame Controls in the Inspector. Then import it into DVD Studio Pro.
    2. Encode in Compressor using the SD DVD 16:9 preset.

One could convert the Text to a Smart Object and then apply the Distortion or Warp.
If the result appears pixelated one could open the SO and increase the resolution, which should alleviate the problem somewhat.
Edit: In CS3 the perspectival transformation for SOs is not directly available, but can be simulated with Warp.
A further option would be creating a Layer with a Vector Mask from the Text (Layers – Type – Convert to Shape; best done on a duplicate of the original text layer) and transform that; this would maintain sharp edges at the price of losing text-editability.

  • Need widescreen, not letterbox, when hooking up to TV through composite

I've read a few unanswered posts on this subject. I have a macbook that I want to hook up to a HDTV through a mini-DVI to composite adaptor. When I do this it restricts the available resolutions to letterbox (4:3) resolutions (640x480, 1024x768, etc..). What do I have to do to get this to work properly? I know for a fact that you can put 16:9 through composite cuz thats how my wii is hooked up and its fine.
    Side note:
It seems like every time I hook up a mac to a new monitor/TV this same problem occurs. Whoever came up with the idea of restricting resolutions at apple need a swift kick in the pants.

This sounds similar to a limitation of the Intel mini. Oddly the G4 mini with ATI graphics had no problem outputting wide format video from the Apple to S-Video adapter. So I guess the limitation is in the Intel driver. Certainly other Macs have no problem putting out S-video and composite video in wide formats.
You may be able to get around the Intel driver limitation using SwitchRes X, but I'm not sure of it. Basically you would start with a standard timing like 800 x 600 and make a custom scaled timing from it. The result would still be a 4:3 timing but the video inside that format would be wide, if that makes sense. Then you would set your TV to a wide mode and that would restore "square pixels" so to speak.
Again, I don't know if that would work or not. The Intel driver might intervene and not let SRX build the kind of timing I am describing.

  • QT HDV file not opening in PPRO CS4 or QT 7 Windows

Hello.  I've been given some Quicktime files that were shot in HDV, then captured into Final Cut Pro on a Mac, then exported to a .MOV file.  I can open the file in Quicktime 7 for Windows but I can only hear the audio.  I get white for video.  I've tried importing the same file into Premeire Pro CS4, but it tells me I'm missing a codec.  Any ideas what codec I might be missing to view this file properly?

At least through QT Pro 7.5.5, the keystroke was Ctrl+J (same as Dupe Layer in PS). I have been told that this is only available in QT Pro, but cannot verify, as all copies of QT on my computers are Pro. Have not had a regular installation for years. If you have other experiences, please let me know, especially if QT "Regular" can reveal Properties, and if the keystroke command is different.
    Bill,
Yes, you are correct when referring to the "Show Movie Properties" option, which is a "Pro" only feature. Witness:
The "Movie Inspector" is a more limited view of a file's properties, and doesn't allow you to modify anything, unlike the "Movie Properties" option, but will at least give you a quick overview of the format, frame rate, frame size and other properties:
It's good enough for at least discovering the nature of a QT movie.

  • Final Cut Pro HDV compression

I am digitizing from a Sony HDV-FX! using the stard HDV 1080i/60 compression and am experiencing Low image quality with gradations of large smooth backgrounds. Even if I Blur/Gausian the compression band won't go away the footage still looks heavily compressed.
The graphics in my project are also banding and the fade ups and downs are heavily banded.
    HELP!

I'm having the same issue-strangely, earlier this week, I exported a video from my Sony NEX-5 (native resolution of the video is 1440X1080)using Export > Quicktime Movie > Current Settings. Less than 24 hrs later, I'm exporting, and now my 16:9 movie looks like it's 4:3. I haven't changed anything in the settings, and my other videos look ok in quicktime player, so the advice from the other thread of changing quicktime player settings doesn't work. Nor is anamorphic checked in the sequence settings--per another thread's advice. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Edit in Photoshop TIFF Compression Not Applied

I'm running LR4.1 on Windows 7 and have my LR 'External Editing' preferences set to 'ZIP' compression. When I 'Save' an 'Edit In' file from inside PS CS6 it does not apply ZIP compression. I verified this by checking the file size, then resaving using 'Save As' and selecting 'ZIP' compression in the save file options. The file size was reduced as expected, so LR is creating a TIFF file that does not respect my preferences setting for 'ZIP' compression.
In addition the TIFF file created by LR4.1 'Edit In' defaults to Macintosh 'Byte Order:
There is no LR 'Preferences' setting to change the 'Byte Order' to IBM PC, yet many agencies specifically want TIFF files with Intel/PC byte order. I will now have to go back and manually change these settings on any images sent to these agencies. In addition I will have to manually do a 'Save As' and reset these TIFF options for all future LR 'Edit In' Photoshop images.
Does anyone else have the same issue and/or have a more suitable solution?
Message was edited by: trshaner I forgot to add that once you 'Save' a LR 'Edit In' image in PS, the TIFF save dialouge toggles to Macintosh 'Byte Order. This means you have to manually change it in PS the next time ANY TIFF file is opened and resaved inside, to re-toggle it back to the preferred settings.

That's a very good question. Go to this post with last comment from one year ago:
Lightroom/Photoshop: TIFF compression settings have no effect when Lightroom sends image to Photoshop for editing
Scroll down to this post and click on 'view 2 more comments.'
You can use Image Processor Pro to apply compression to multiple TIFFs already processed, but there's no option in it for also adding ZIP layer compression.

  • Apple ProRes HQ files (converted from HDV) will not play in Premiere Pro

I was working on a project in premier pro and finished a draft on 12/24 with no issues.  I took these file directy from their coverted state as .mov files into the PP project and edited on the timeline with no issues.  Shut down on 12/24.  Opened project today, none of the files from the HDV converted format will play correctly OR export correctly.  They are all Black video and still contain the right audio.
As a side note here, this is the same for trying to play the file in Quicktime AND in Apple's Final Cut Pro 7.
The only files affected are those that were uploaded and coverted to Apple ProRes HQ from the HDV format.
Again, this was working and functioning fine un Tuesday, now they appear black in the timeline and viewers.
Only change made to ANYTHING on my iMac is: Updated iTunes on Tuesday after I had closed the project from Premiere Pro.
    Please help!!!
    Thankyou,
    Clede

Only change made to ANYTHING on my iMac is: Updated iTunes on Tuesday after I had closed the project from Premiere Pro.
    Sounds like a clue.
Apple / Mac  updates have a history of creating issues and plenty of evidence supports that statement.
My guess its a QT version issue.

  • AVI File from ORDRO HDV Z35 not accepted

Hello, I have the digital film camera ORDRO HDV Z35
    CODEC: H264 - MPEg 4 HVC (Part10) (H264) Decodiertes Format Planar 4:2:0 YUV
Audio: IMA WAV ADPCM Audio (ms)
    I am using Windows 8.1
The VLC Player and the Windows Media Player can play the AVI Files without Problems.
But Premiere Pro does not read it, it says unknown or damaged file.
Think it is a Codec Problem.
    Any solutions to it?

H.264 will not work inside an AVI wrapper http://forums.adobe.com/thread/854115
-so use the MOV wrapper if YOUR camera offers that option

  • DV/DVCPRO NTSC Compression not working

When I export a sequence to QT movie using DV/DVCPRO NTSC compression (either directly to a QT movie or using QT conversion) I get what looks like a solarized effect (maybe 6 colors total) and the colors are all off - mostly browns and dark tans with hard lines between them, grainy.
If I export with no compression, it looks fine.
It also looks fine in FCP itself during edit and playback, etc.
If I take this project and clips to another machine, it exports into DV/DVCPRO NTSC with no problem.
This just started happening. It was working fine for months with the same settings.
I've tried archive and reinstall the OS system as well as trashing and reinstalling FCP. No change. Using OS 10.4.11, FCP 5.1.4.
I don't know what else to do other than wipe the drive completely. All suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks
    Paul

    Hi Paul
in your first post you said that exporting without compression was fine, now you say that it also has issues and that exporting on another machine is ok.
    1. Given that you want to go back to tape, export at your sequence settings to maintain quality; actually selecting the same settings as the sequence settings should see no difference in quality. If you are outputting the finished product back to the same tape that the footage originated from there is no need to change codec, you are better to leave it the same.
    2. The fact that the export is seeing problems on one machine and not another suggests that something is wrong on machine one. Trash the prefs for FCP, run some system maintainence on it as well, eg. Disk Utility.

  • Usnig dv with hdv compression in the kona card

hi, i try capture minidv (sony dsr11) by the firewire in my HDV project.
i´m configure de settings using hdv1080i60 and the space go to space!!! 200 gb give me only 35min!!! whats wrong???? help me, i want mixing dv captured in 1080i without renders!!!!!
    g5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

You cannot capture DV as 1080i using the DSR-11 thru firewire. You'd need an HD capture card and a deck with SDI inputs or component outputs and RS-422 deck control. Then you can capture it as another codec. I see that you mention the Kona card in your Subject line, but don't mention it at all in your workflow. I am not sure you can capture from the DSR-11 using the Kona. Hmmm...maybe if you use firewire as deck control, but capture with the S-video or composite outs. But...then again...what Kona? Kona 2 and 3 are SDI only. Kona LH has what you need.
But capture DV as HDV? Even with a capture card...don't know if it is possible. AFAIK, no one has ever tried.

  • Sony HDV Walkman not seen for video playback

    Hello.
Bit of a problem - have just taken delivery of two spanking new Sony GV-HD700E decks to use in our edit suites at work.
Capturing from the decks works like a charm in both HDV (at both 1080i50 and 25p) and DV-PAL (4:3 and Anamorphic). Playback controls are also working fine.
The problem is when I use 'Print To Video' - everything works fine in DV, but unfortunately the settings under 'Video Playback' for all HDV formats are greyed out - I can't get ANY playback in HDV to the deck at all.
I've tried all the HDV Device Control Presets without success (including unplugging the Firewire cables, restarting the deck and the Mac after each change).
The Sony site says the device definitely takes HDV in, so I was just wondering if it's a driver issue?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Jim
NB - I did plug the Firewire cables back in each time...

What that means is you cannot externally monitor HDV without a 3rd party card or box. You can, however, Print to Video with HDV. I've done it successfully with a Sony V1U with FCS 1 (FCP 5.1.4) and now with FCS 2.
If everything is connected and powered up in the proper order, it should work with the same Easy Setup used to originally capture the footage for the project.
It's very important that the camera or deck be connected to the mac via firewire and then powered up before the computer is turned on. After powering up the mac, launching FCP, and opening your project, make sure the timeline window with your finished, rendered/conformed sequence is activated.
Then, go to Print to Video, make your selections, select the 'Start Recording Automatically' box, and hit OK. Your sequence will do some additional conforming, and then your camera/deck should begin to record as the sequence plays out.
In addition, make sure other firewire devices and cables are disconnected during the Print to Video operation. I've done it successfully with other drives and devices connected, but it could cause problems with certain setups.
