HDV converted via to SDI

I've got a project looming and as everyone here probably knows, the HVX200 has been pushed. Does anyone have any experience running HDV through a HD analond to SDI converter? for example, the Aja HD10A? I know they used this camera as a supplemental cam on NCIS, and some other big shows, they must have done it this way. Audio has me stumped as well. Suggestions are welcome...
excellent.

First, you do know that the HVX200 is DVCPRO HD, not HDV, right? I was answering the HDV part of your post.
The equipment list for converting HDV to HD-SDI uncompressed 1080i for editing and monitoring:
1) Sony HDV VCR or camcorder
2) Aja HD10A (converts HDV analog component to HD-SDI uncompressed 1080i)
3) Aja Kona 3 (or Kona 2 for OCI-X G5s)
4) Aja K-Box
5) Aja HDP (converts HD-SDI to send to DVI display)
6) Apple 23" Cinema HD Display
7) ATTO FC-42ES (dual channel PCIe 4Gb/sec fibre channel HBA)
8) Huge Systems 4210 (4TB dual channel 4Gb/sec fibre channel array)
9) HD VCR (HDCAM or other)
If you're going to use a previous generation G5, you'll need the PCI-X versions of the HBA and Kona cards. If you have a G5 that doesn't have PCI-X or PCIe slots, you're out of luck. Also, load up on RAM - it's cheap.

    Hi azza675,
    ExportPDF converts PDF files to Word and Excel formats (and several others). What you describe, sounds like you're trying to convert a file *to* PDF. Did you ever start a trial of Acrobat, perhaps? (Whereas you can create PDFs with Acrobat, ExportPDF doesn't let you convert files to PDF.)
    What happens when you log in directly to ExportPDF at https://cloud.acrobat.com/exportpdf?

    I should say that I am doing this on the iPhone4 and not a laptop.

    I believe that there is an app called MxTube that lets you download high quality youtube videos to your iPhone

  • HDV converting for web

    For the last year I've shot HDV downconverted to Anamorphic 16:9 SD in camera in FCP and then output the files for iphones/ipad. The resolution output is 480x270 in M4v (ipod format). This has looked pretty good.
    Now, I've got FCP 7 and a new Power mac and I finally want to edit and export in HD!
    The website i'm uploading to currently has the space for QT files @ 480x270.
    Question is: If I capture and edit in HDV at the 1080i, If I export the file out @ 480x270 will the file still be HD? In other words, will the file have HD quality (twice pixels) in the limited space? I'd like my videos to utilize the better pixel count but don't know if that's possible while restricting the output size.
    Any comments or suggestions to take advantage of HD for web videos? I've seen smaller HD videos on sites like youtube, just not sure how they went about exporting.
    Thanks a million guys!

    Ok, I'm still learning and I'd love some comments from you experts out there!

    There are a lot of factors that come to play with HD. It's not just frame size, it's frame rate, GOP formats, compression schemes, color space, the list goes on.
    When it comes to SD, DV is a cheap, highly compressed, bottom of the barrel format. It can look pretty decent if you just edit it. But as soon as you start adding any filters, transitions, effects, graphics, etc., the quality starts to crumble and fall apart.
    HDV is the HD equivalent of DV, only worse. Think about it this way. If you capture 60 minutes of 720x480 DV, the file will be about 13GB. If you capture 60 minutes of 1440x1080 HDV, the file will be about 13GB. What? How are they the same size when there is supposedly 4x the resolution? The compression and GOP format throw that information out before it even hits the tape.
    FCP will allow you to convert HDV to ProRes on the fly as you capture via FW. You can't Log & Capture, it's Capture Now only, but it's worth it.
    Now, onto the other stuff. The effects, filters, graphics. Why do these look worse in an HDV sequence than a ProRes sequence? Because of the color space of HDV. There's a bare minimum of color and luminance information in the HDV format. So when you start playing with it, there's no room to breath and it just falls apart.
    Your footage itself will not improve in quality by using ProRes. The things you add to it will. Same goes for your DV sequences. If you work in an SD ProRes sequence, your graphics and effects will look better there, too.

  • HD SDI capture... no audio via HD SDI or XLR

    Can't seems to get audio levels to capture on HD SDI or my xlr inputs via blackmagic hd extreme.
    Using a canon xl h1. Any ideas as to how I get get sound as well as video?

    You need the device which i have. The convergent design SI connect. Works great! Hook up the firewire (4pin to 4pin) from the box to the camera, then the RS 422 from the device to your BlackMagic, then the HD SDI out of your device into the BlackMagic.

  • HDV converted file sizes ...

    Hi there,
    I have just shot some HDV footage on a Z1. The pixs look fine and the Viewer window was 16:9.
    The edit is complete and all I want to do is to show it to the client over the web. I have converted it as a Quicktime file and selected the smallest image size available.
    However, when the file has finished saving, the finished QT file is a 4:3 image ...
    Yes, my 'sizes' are correct for both horiz and vert. Even tried using the 'keep aspect ratio using letterbox' ...
    Anyone got any clues as to where I've gone wrong?
    Thanks for your time and expertise!

    HOWEVER ... I was too quick off the mark;
    I took your initial calculation and halved it. That worked nicely to produce a small image but when I went for the 640 x 360 settings, I still got 4:3 image.
    This is totally bizarre as the dimensions are 640 x 360 but the image within is vertically stretched and sits there as a 4:3 image would ... any ideas?
    I tried it (the second time around) with the 'preserve aspect ratio' button selected but still the same output occured.

  • C100 with Blackmagic Battery Converter HDMI to SDI

    The Blackmagic box will not recognize the HDMI signal out of my Canon C100. It will recognize the signal out of both a Sony handicam and the output of a Dell laptop computer. We tested an AJA HDMI to SDI converter with the Canon C100 and it worked fine, so it is not the output of the camera or the HDMI cable itself. Has anyone had the same issue? Any advice? Thanks!

    I had this same problem recently. Just go to the black magic website and download the latest firmware for the blackmagic battery converter. Follow the instructions on how to update the converter. With the firmware update, everything  works perfectly! I use it reliably on a Steadicam setup.

  • Unattractive white outline on fade out after 24 fps convert via Nattress

    Hi all,
    I converted a DV SD to 24 fps but via Nattress film effects and on certain fade outs there is an unattractive white outline around all the current whites on the frame. I tried 30 fps and got the same results. These fade outs are running at 70% speed. Is that a factor?
    Thanks in advance,
    Pete K

    Pete. Could you send me a small clip of footage in a timeline, with the 70% slowdown and fade so that I can see exactly how you're creating the edit, and then I'll figure out a solution for you.

  • An app to view in full screen the output of a DV converter (via FireWire)?

    After an exhaustive search of the forums and the Web . . .
    Is there an app available somewhere that will allow me to preview (not necessarily to capture) the video and audio from a DV video converter in full screen?
    Basically, I want to be able to use my Canopus ADVC110 digital video converter in conjunction with my HD cable TV set top box to watch TV in full-screen on my Mac (uncompressed).
    QuickTime doesn't have an option for "movie recording" in full screen; nor do Final Cut Pro or iMovie.
    I have (and use) Elgato EyeTV with a Plextor PX-TV402U normally, but I want to have the option to watch TV on my Mac in an uncompressed format.
    Thanks in advance for any help!

    Well, hTV is working, but I'm having issues with audio lag. The audio is slightly behind the video.
    Anyone have experience with this app? Anyone have any better suggestions than hTV?
    Thanks...

  • Automatic date converting via-trigger

    Hi all!
    I'd like to know if there's a way to set triggers on tables with date-fields that can:
    1. automatically convert the date from (e.g) 01/10/2005 to 01-oct-2005 00:00:00 AM on every INSERT and UPDATE on that column
    2. automatically convert the date from (e.g) 01-oct-2005 00:00:00 AM to 01/10/2005 on every SELECT on that column
    3. get only the timetable from that field and so on...
    using Oracle 9i.
    Thanx a lot!

    The trigger can't help you here. You should think of changing the settings of your
    session or using to_date() function:
    SQL> create table t (date# date);
    Table created.
    SQL> insert into t values('01/28/2005');
    insert into t values('01/28/2005')
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-01843: not a valid month
    SQL> insert into t values(to_date('01/28/2005','MM/DD/YYYY'));
    1 row created.
    SQL> alter session set nls_date_format = 'MM/DD/YYYY';
    Session altered.
    SQL> insert into t values('01/28/2005');
    1 row created.Rgds.

  • Capturing HDV Into ProRes 422 (LT) Via FireWire

    I read this fine tutorial on Moviola on the technique of Capturing HDV Into ProRes Via FireWire.
    http://moviola.com/hdv_prores
    Since you can choose ProRes 422 (LT) as an option in the Log and Transfer window, I was wondering if there is a way to capture HDV to ProRes 422 (LT) via firewire like in the above mentioned article.
    I tried creating a custom capture setting in the AV Settings, but ProRes 422 (LT) was not available as an option, only ProRes 422 and ProRes 422 (HQ). And those settings cannot be edited or duplicated (grayed out).
    I don’t know why ProRes 422 (LT) is available in the Log and Transfer window but not in the AV Settings window. Maybe it will become available in an update.
    In the meantime, does anyone know a way to get around this? Maybe modifying an FCP file somewhere?
    Thanks,
    ======
    Richard

    HDV is recorded to tape inside of the camera as digital information. Component coming out of the camera is analog. The camera is performing the first conversion D/A, from HDV (digital) to component out (analog).
    Component going into the ioHD is analog. The ioHD then converts via its hardware to Prores (any flavor), which is digital. The ioHD has to convert the analog from the component outs of my camera to digital for use in FCP. FCP only uses digital video.
    You said "The IOHD internally converts to ProRes.." converts to ProRes is the second A/D conversion.
    So the path is D/A/D. I count that as two conversions, camera D/A as one the ioHD A/D as two.
    I don't want to unnecessarily convert from digital to analog to digital which is why I don't use the ioHD to convert from HDV to Prores (any flavor).
    Unfortunately I don't have any digital outs for this camera, neither HDMI or HD SDI.
    I believe capturing and converting HDV to ProRes via firewire in FCP doesn't have this D/A/D conversion which is why I'd like to be able to capture HDV to ProRes LT via firewire in FCP and stay digital all the way, with no analog conversions.
    I use the ioHD for all of my analog to digital conversions. It's a great box from a great company.
    Thanks,

  • Workflow for converting SonyHD Cam footage via KonaLHe to DVCPro HD?

    Hi,
    I've got a project starting tomorrow and the producer had to switch cameras the day before the shoot! They are now brining in Sony HDCam 1080psf 23.98 (don't know the camera). I've rented an HD Cam deck with SDI out (no FW). I have the Kona LHe so SDI input will be fine. The project is destined for digibeta 29.97 SD so I'm trying to figure out a good workflow for capture and editing. To keep file bandwidth down, I think DVCPro HD is a good solution, but I'm not sure where or how the conversion takes place using the Kona LHe and FCP. Do I set the Kona frame buffer to DVCPro HD 720p @ 23.98 and set capture settings the same in Final Cut? Or, as I have the internal RAID space, just capture native 1080, edit native, then convert the program to 29.97 window 16x9 at the end of the edit? Clarifications, recommendations and comments welcomed! Tnanks!

    Conversion is done in FCP. But all you have to do is connect it to the Kona via HD SDI and set the capture settings in FCP. The signal coming in from the card is the full signal, you are just telling FCP in which format to save that signal as. And DVCPRO HD 1080p24 would be the setting. I doubt your internal RAID could handle uncompressed 1080p HD.
