HDV - DVD (non-HD DVD)

How do I need to compress HDV to get it to import into a DVD Studio project? Everytime I compress at 16:9 from the HDV timeline it gives an error saying it cannot import PAL video into an NTSC project. It's NTSC 1080i60 (not 1080i50) so I don't believe it's PAL. I'm sure there is a simple solution I just can't figure out what it is.
I have been using MPEG-2 Compression in 16:9 Aspect Ratio. I can view it all in quicktime fine, it's just an issue when I try to bring it into an SD DVD NTSC project to edit. I can import it though if it's a PAL DVD project. This is confusing me a lot. I've never had this trouble with regular DV. Someone please help me out with this. My current configuration is below and I also have the latest Final Cut Studio with all updates installed.

Just in case anyone sees this thread and has a similar problem, I solved it. My Final Cut was automatically putting the PAN level to -1 on every audio clip. Since I'm using mono, not stereo, I switched the level to 0 on the clips. Now everything is fine.

    No… nobody knows Apple's plans but Apple. Also, speculation is against the Terms of Use that we all accept when creating our accounts.
    I would suggest you check some rumour site. You'll have better luck there.

  • Is uncompressed 8-bit PAL 48 KHz the most compatible format for a HDV dvd

    I have shot a project in HDV, edited in HDV sequence. I now want to produce a dvd, that is compatible on both widescreen and 4:3 tv's.
    A friend suggested exporting a quicktime movie in uncompressed 8-bit PAL 48 KHz to ensure maximum compatibility.
    Would people agree with using this setting?

  • Premiere pro 2.0 & HDV DVD layout?

    Is any one can help me out on premiere pro 2.0 DVD layout. I am using premiere pro 2.0. Normally, when I design menu based DVD in DVD layout, I can easily customize the menu background by draging the still image from the project panel to the drop zone in the effect panel. This works for me on DV. But now i am wrking with HDV. I completed the project, the only thing left is to export to DVD. I tried to customize the DVD menu background by draging the image. I see the image in the effect panel but no change in the DVD menu background. How do you thing i can fix the problem? Thank you

    The use of HDV could be the issue.  For that, you need Blu-ray.

  • HDV DVD sound problem

    I'm shooting HDV 1920X1080 16:9 footage and editing with Final Cut Express. Everything looks and sounds fine when I edit but as soon as I create a DVD with iDVD the audio sounds overmodulated.
    What's going on here? And why does everybody say you can't create HD discs, iDVD help says that I can.

  • Odd pixelation with HDV -- DVD

    Hi All,
    I'm having an issue with compressor converting HDV footage to DVD format. I'm using the "best quality 90 minute" setting in compressor, and submitting to a qmaster cluster (4 instances on 8 core mac pro, 2 instances on unibody MacBook Pro, 1 instance on CoreDuo MacBook Pro).
    The original footage is crisp, but when it comes out of compressor, in places there is some serious pixelation... I'm not really sure how else to describe it, so I've loaded some sample footage here:

    The BeforeCompressor.mp4 is HDV converted.... its not the best conversion, but you'll be able to see that there is no pixelation really
    The AfterCompressor.mov is a screen capture of the same clip in DVD Studio Pro.... It looks basically the same when I simulate the DVD and when I burn the DVD.
    Any idea how I can fix this? Is there a setting that I'm missing in compressor before I submit... is this a result of qmaster putting pieces back together?

    Looks like trouble with downscaling.
    Have you tried implementing frame controls?
    1. Export from FCP using Compressor
    2. Apply the DVD preset you want
    3. In the Inspector window, click the Frame Controls tab
    4. Set the Resize Filter to Better or Best
    5. Set Output fields to Progressive
    6. Set Deinterlace to Better or Best
    7. Uncheck Adaptive Details
    8. Hit Submit and give your job a name

  • HDV DVD

    I captured footage from my sony Z1U and edited the project in FCP. I exported it to QT the final movie is 1:36mins 1920x1080) It is 18gigs. I sent it to compressor as every book recomends and it is in the 8th hour of processing and still going completing only 51% so far. According to the H264 that I chose it will allow me to fit 119mins of video on a standard DVD.
    Is this going to work? or am I just wasting time. I used to downconvert my footage in my deck and then edit and produce my dvds in SD , which by the way was much easier but I figured I would give my client something different by providing an higher quality widescreen. If this does work, will the DVD play in standard decks? Will the video look good?
    Im new to most of this,even though I have succesfully created dvds before with little problem? So Im sorry if these questions sound dumb, but since it looks like I may have another 20hours to go, I figured I'd post here.

    the apple H264 for HD DVD codec is probably a waste of time for you. first, it is 720p & going from your Z1U 1080i HDV quicktime to 720p H264 is going to take forever, not look that great, and only be playable on a (powerful) mac computer. burning an HD DVD to play on the toshiba player would be useless because:
    1. the toshiba player has problems with H264 from DVD SP (I have the player, I've tried it, footage plays back at about 10 fps).
    2. the toshiba player beautifully play the 1080i HDV quicktime if you drop that straight into DVD SP 4, but your project is way too big to fit on a disc.
    3. your client probably doesn't have an HD DVD player.
    If you want your client to actually be able to watch your DVD, I suggest export using compressor straight from within FCP and choose best encode (2 pass) 120min 16/9 SD DVD.
    It will take 20 - 30 hours but it should look okay.
    And your client will be able to play it. They tend to like that.

  • HDV DVD FLUTTER

    I am shooting HDV, and I am shooting more fast moving racing packages now. Is it better for me to just switch to DV and avoid the flutter when I burn down the DVD with the fast motion ....? or what do I do to avoid the fluttering/blurring while shooting HDV, it seems it is all in the compressor step of my work flow and I am starting the interlancing from the bottom. Thanks for the help.

    If you're shooting fast motion, it would be best to shoot in just about any format other than HDV. Once you've recorded HDV to tape, the jerky motion problems of HDV are on tape - down-converting to DV won't get rid of it. Shooting in DV mode will eliminate that problem.

  • HDV ----- DVD - Need some help determining my next course of action.

    I am editing my project in HD....in CS4 on MacPro.
    Ultimately, I just want to burn a DVD using Encore or iDVD.
    What settings should I export at??
    I obviously want the highest quality before i burn the DVD and it has to be a file that can be burned to DVD.
    I am not very knowledgeable about all the formats in the Export Menu.
    Can someone give me the straight dope on exporting HD footage that will need to be burned to DVD??

  • HDV to DVD workflow

    Here's what I want to do: using my new Z1 to make a standard def DVD that will be letterboxed on a 4:3 screen and full 16X9 on my HDTV(s). I know about converting the m2t files, and to create a DV timeline but from there I am perpelexed as to what the proper settings would be in Final Cut, and the setup in DVD Studio Pro.   • Dvd quality issues

    My first time be gentle. I have been dabbling in FCE for several years, little home projects. Every time I burn iDVD copy, the overall quality of the images seems fuzzy when played back on TV. I am planning a more demanding project and will need much higher quality end product- have bought FCP am planning to buy G5 tower (have ibook and emac now) and upgrade from Cannon GL2 to HD cammera??
    Questions.
    1). does the G5 dual proc. tower come with sufficient capture card to produce broadcast quality stuff. (i know nothing about cards)
    2). will taping in HD improve quality even if played back on standard TV?
    3). Have i been doing something wrong for the past two years with my FCE and ibook to have created _not even close to broadcast quality shorts?
    they look fine on computer screen- not on TV/DVD.

    Welcome to the forum!
    The quality issues you mention could be attributed to many individual things or a combination things. Hard to say without seeing the image quality first-hand. Some of the more common issues are; lighting during the shoot, video format, lens, camera settings during recording and ... unrealistic expectations on your part.
    You seem to be comparing the image quality from your GL2 to "broadcast quality" but in reality the two are different things. Also, you're viewing the output of iDVD which isn't known for it's outstanding quality.
    To address your questions directly:
    1). Yes. If you have broadcast quality footage to feed it with the correct capture card and other needed system resources, a G5 or MacPro can handle several broadcast formats very well. But as with most things of this nature, video editing is a garbage-in, garbage-out proposition. You HAVE to have the quality on the front end.
    2). The G5 and newer MacPros come with Firewire 400 and Firewire 800 ports. Those will work fine for all DV25 and HDV flavors - none of which are considered "broadcast quality." You'll need an optional card for other formats. Which card to use is dependent on the format you choose to work with. Of course, your G5 will also need additional hard drives capable of sustaining the data rate of your chosen format and as much RAM as you can afford - 2gbs minimum, 4gb+ recommended.
    3). See above - 98% of it depends on the quality of your footage to begin with. The GL2 is a consumer DV camera which has a 4:1:1 color space (as do all DV25 formats). That is not broadcast quality and Canon didn't intend it to be. Many broadcasters won't accept DV footage at all.

  • 3 cam multi-cam, HDV or DV?

    First, let me say I read this http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/when_to_staynative.html and even emailed the author about the HDV->DVD workflow. His response was "If you're going to have no HD distribution now or any time in the future, then downconverting to SD on ingest is reasonable. I assume that anyone shooting in HD will be protecting for future and should edit in HD, before doing any current SD downconverts." To my defense, I always keep my tapes and the FCP Project file so I could media manage in the future, but HIGHLY doubt that for what I do I'll ever need to do that at least anytime soon. That being said, I will be doing a multi-camera shoot at the end of the month, two cameras over two days, but one camera on the second day will be strictly a backup, so I'll have 3 angles to mix together. I have two eSATA drives which is what I figure I'll need to end up using for the bandwidth. DV and HDV are the same bit-rate, but not the same processor intensive wise. I've read on here for the past several years the horrors of HDV as a codec, aka, the conforming process. I've also read about rendering in ProRes or even transcoding the footage.
    Here's my question, for a 3 angle multicam going only to DVD, should I A. ingest and edit as HDV then export for DVD, B. ingest and edit as DV via the downconversion on my camera, or C. other.
    The thing being recorded is a dance show, so I may need to split each dance into it's own multiclip if the time between dances is different each day, but that shouldn't affect my workflow. Really the only thing I edited entirely HDV was a high school's musical which took days to compress for DVD, so I'd rather not need to go through that excruciating process again.

    i have a AVCHD camera (sony HDR-SR1) and its just great! it records on a harddrive and that makes saving/ deleting footage so much easier. the touch screen interface is super simple and took seconds to get used to.
    i havent anything to compare it to besides a realy old low res camera that records on a miniDV so i cant realy make any desitions for you but i can tell you this:
    i realy enjoy my AVCHD, but MAKE SURE THAT IT IS COMPATIBLE WITH WHAT YOU NEED IT TO BE! before this summer i suffered greatly to be able to edit on Final cut express and i could not keep it at a HD quality
    if ur using iMovie 08 then its all good though :P
    but be rlyyyy carefull
    only way u know itll work w/o doing any research is if it has a firewire

  • Premiere Pro 2: Replacing SD with HDV

    Hi all,
    I have a foreign project on hand which involves shooting, editing and finally finishing the project at the site itself. I have Canon HDV Camera. I intend to shoot on HDV and give the final project on HDV DVD.
    Softwares: Premiere Pro 2, After Effects 6.5, Photoshop CS2
    Now, the place where I will be working does not have strong computer which would allow me to work on HDV format. But I can edit on SD format on that computer. Now, I am keen on giving the final DVD on HDV. So this is what I am planning to do.
    -         Shoot on HDV format.
    -         Down-convert to SD 16:9 while capturing on the computer (Camera has facility to down-convert to SD).
    -         Edit and finish entire project in SD 16:9 at the site.
    Once the entire project is finished in SD 16:9, I would come back to my studio
    -         Recapture the entire footage in HDV again
    -         Replace the SD (*.avi) files with HDV (*.mpg/*.m2v) files in premiere pro 2.
    -         Make a final DVD in HDV and send them back the HDV DVD.
    My Important question is: Is this possible to do? Is the direction of my planning rite?
    Kindly inform me as I would be shooting in the coming week.

  • What is your experience transfering  sony HDR-HE3 HDV to Imovie5 DV

    I just bought the new HDR-HE3 and am leaving for England in a few days. I do not have the time to do extensive testing and would like to find out about your experiences in transfering video captured in HDV to DV format in Imovie5. Does it work ? any editing problems ? How long was your video ?
    I am trying to find out if I can safely capture HDV videos and transfer them to Imovie5 in DV format for the short term. I understand that i will have to redo them in HDV format when HDV DVD players become affordable.
    Would it be better to take the videos in DV format and forget about HDV for the time being? After reading all the "horror stories" about Imovie6, I have decided to stick with Imovie5 for now. Your feedback will be appreciated.

    i can't answer you on the camera issue 'cause i don't have an hdv camcorder
    at this time, but have been using iMovie since version 2 with little or no problems although i use FCE as well.
    all my fellow videographers have already switched to HDV and no one regretted so far ....i would say you made the right choice.
    you could argue that it's better to work in DV as the DVD's and most TV's do not support HDV yet and i would have agreed but my colleagues have all assured me so far that it's much better to keep the HDV format throughout the entire process and then let iDVD make the downsizing....
    the only reason there would be to capture SD is if your HDD runs low on space
