HDV footage filmed on Z1 - UK

Hi
When I imported the footage the settings were set to 25 fps, Should I have changed it to 23.98?
Cheers

No. The frame rate in the UK is 25fps. If you shot with a PAL camera, then it recorded 25fps...so capturing 25fps is just fine.

  • Unable to capture Canon HDV footage with Sony v1u camera

I'm trying to capture hdv footage filmed with a canon video camera with my sony v1u.  My sony footage captures as it should, but the canon footage, although playing fine on the sony camera, will not capture to cs4.  Any suggestions?

Check all camera settings and make sure they match the original filming mode on the other camera... and veryify your PPro settings match
If that doesn't work, try http://strony.aster.pl/paviko/hdvsplit.htm

  • 5dmk2 and z1 HDV footage

I’m shooting a film which is being shot on a 5dmk2 we have also used a z1e which is a HDV 1080 50i camera. I’m going to be editing it on a macbook pro running final cut studio 2.
The intension is to use the 5donly footage however if we where to mix the HDV and 5d footage what would be the best work flow.
I was intending to transfer the 5d footage to proress using stream clip and I was going to do the edit at 30p and then convert to 25p. If do mix the HDV footage what the best workflow for this?. Thanks for any help

*I read about the Bonsai method for HDV to DVD and that sounds great, but I also read that since I'm going to DVD I might as well down convert to SD and do the rest with anamorphic settings.*
The best approach? I would convert it to ProRes and get the hardware to run it.
Or use a custom preset in Compressor and go to DVCProHD progressive.
It will take forever, but fabulous on a SD DVD.

  • How big is HDV footage?

So I just finished filming a doc, we have 30 hours of HDV footage we want to capture and edit in FCP. How much disc space does each min use? I have been told "same as HD" and 11 GB an hour. Any one know FOR SURE?

Lucky, your wording is fine...your timing is off, that's all. It would be best to wait until the origial poster says something like "Great, that worked!" or "those are good ideas, I'll try them" or something that indicates that we have indeed helped them. Then, if they say that but DON'T award points or mark the thread solved, then I chime in with my PSA:

  • Capture Sony FX1 HDV footage in FCP 5.0.4

    Hi,
Tomorrow we'll have to capture a lot of footage from a Sony FX1 HDV.
I have no experience with this camcorder.
What are the best capture settings in FCP ?
We want the native HDV footage.
    thanks

The best capture settings are those that match how you shot the footage.
If it is HDV1080i/60, then obviously you elect the capture preset.

  • Unable to Subclip HDV footage

I'm having trouble subclipping HDV footage. When I match frame the footage in the timeline the make subclip option is greyed out. Anybody have any idea why FCP is doing this? Thanks in advance
    Intel - FCP 6.0.4

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who was having the same problem as you. Although you say the camera playback is set properly, please recheck this. go into your camera's playback menu>menu>standard set>VCR HDV/DV. Unplug your firewire from the camera. Make sure camera is set to HDV NOT auto. replace firewire cable. Now open FCP. Go in Audio/video settings>A/V devices (farthest tab on right). In box for playback edit to tape different from video output (make sure it's checked) mirrored (checked) Video playback 1080i50, Audio HDV. I hope that works now.

  • Trouble capturing HDV footage from Sony Z5U in FCE4 - any ideas?

I've shot about half an hour of HDV footage with the Sony Z5U. Have the computer at home connected to my Mac with a firewire. Tried with both firewires that I own. I've used a similar camera before to capture footage recently with no problems.
Gone through the Easy Setup in FCE4 and changed it to HD, HDV1080i60. In the camera, the VCR mode is set for HDV, the Video Out for Component says "1080i/480i", the down convert and DV wide convert are for letter box.
Any ideas on what the problem is? Do I just have 2 bad Firewire cables? or a bad port on my computer/camera?

Do you want to downconvert, or do you want to capture HD? Switch off downconvert. Switch off iLink.

  • Digitizing HDV footage with a Consumer Grade HD Camcorder

I have HDV footage on mini-digital tape. I need to digitize using Final Cut Pro. I shot the footage using a Sony HVR-V1U camera at 24p (an HDV camera and recorded onto mini-digital tape. I no longer have convenient access to the Sony HDV camera and was wondering if I can simply use a consumer grade high-definition camcorder to digitize the footage into my computer. If so, is there any quality degradation?

  • Error message when adding a filter to DV and HDV footage

    Hi,
I do not understand why I am getting an error message saying,
" The effect 'refraction, twirl, insect eye' failed to render: Your Hardware cannot render at the requested size and depth"
    Can some help me out?
I have a first generation Mac Pro 2..66 with 8gb of ram and the Ati radeon and Nvidia graffics card. This is a high end computer, why can't it render a video filter like refraction and son on?
I tried re-installing FCP and erasing those files in the preferences folder, but still not luck.
To make matters worse the render works on my MacBook Pro (1st gen.) and not on the Mac Pro quad core?
There must be something going on in my settings, is anybody else having this problem?
The footage I am working with are 2 formats, one is DV Ntsc shot with a DVX 100 and the other one I was working with HDV footage.
Why am I not able to render with the hardware power of this monster computer.
    Thanks for you help,
    Alessandro

    Hi Varkgirl,
That would be great but I don't really know where to start with this. Can you help?
Sorry for the delay in responding but I run my own business as well as doing my wife's website.
My email address is [email protected] if you could send me your advice that way if it's ok with you.
    Thanks.

  • Not possible with FCP6: HDV Footage and external TV (monitor) viewing ?

Hi all, I learned from another FCP6 forum when I'm working with HDV footage, FCP 6 allows you to view this via firewire on an external monitor or TV, but ONLY as downconverted DV. This works fine but in a worse quality on my external TV. Is there really no possibility to view on an external TV via TRUE HDV via HDMI output ?

The MXO from Matrox might work OK (though it will only output HD via SDI or Component analog, no HDMI output) but I'd contact Matrox first about using a DVI adapter with the unit. It connects via a full sized DVI connection.
But quite frankly, you'd be very happy with the power of a MacPro. Especially working with HDV files. Rendering would be a lot faster, Motion and Color would also benefit from the added power of an 8 core machine... plus you can use that Kona 3 card. Best there is IMHO.
    Jerry
P.S. You are running professional software that really is desinged to be run on a professional machine like a Mac Pro...

  • Sequence Settings for HDV footage to create SD 16 x 9 -help!

I shot HDV footage (using Sony Z1U) and want to use it as SD footage in final cut.
How do I set up a sequence to be able to create an SD sequence in 16 x 9? Which sequence settings should I choose for this?
Also, do I need to capture the footage as Anamorphic 16:9 or can I simply check the Anamporphic 16:9 box?
    Thanks, Joel

HDV has a natively wide aspect ratio, and is not anamorphic (stretched) like SD widescreen.
FCP seems unable to correctly allow for the reversed field order of HDV when converting to SD with software, whether exporting QT, going direct to compressor, or nesting into SD and rendering.
Also, if you go direct to compressor from your HDV sequence, type elements and pixel layers will shift around and change aspect ratio.
I have had good luck exporting a self-contained native HDV movie and running that through compressor, though I am forced to turn frame controls off in my compressor preset, which throws out every other field and gives a pattern of progressive frames where every 5th frame is repeated. Our producer called it the "max headroom" effect.
If you know you won't need HDV output for the current planned workflow of your project, I would start by capturing SD by turning on the DV downconvert setting on your HDV deck. You'll save yourself a lot of time and headaches.
Otherwise, if you want to work in native HDV, output and HDV master of the finished sequences and recapture those as DV if you want to retain the origiinal fields in your SD output, whether to tape or to mpeg2.
When you recapture as DV, whether the original source, or a recapture of you finished master, that's the point at which you'll want to capture anamorphic.

  • *** Settings for importing down-converted HDV footage

Working with a Sony Z1U with HDV footage. Have printed HDV footage to tape and now want to import it as SD footage in order to go to DVD. In the settings on the Z1U, do I choose the "squeeze" or "letterbox" option? I think squeeze, but I want to double check. I want this to fill widescreen tv's and appear letterboxed on tubes.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Importing HDV footage - seems you don't want to use Premiere (?)

    Hi everyone, and good morning.
Well, after many great posts, and lots of help here, I think I realize something....
If you own a camcorder that does HDV footage ( like my Canon H20 ), you must use something other than Premiere to import your original footage from the camcorder, if you wish to do any type of editing in Premiere later on.
If I understand what you have all told me that is.
For clarfication, last week, I imported my first HDV tape using Premiere, and the resulting file was a very high quality .mpeg file, however, it was not editable in Premiere at all. The audio and video were totally out of sync.
So, I then re-captured the original video from the camera into Pinnacle Studio 11, and this resulted in 2 files, a video and audio file. ( .wav and a .m2v file ). These files import into Premiere very well, and the audio and video is perfectly in sync from beginning to end.
With all this said, is there any point at all in keeping the original .mpeg file that I originally captured from the camcorder into Premiere ???
At this point, I don't see any advantage to this, but thought I would ask. I've read numerous posts that .mpeg is just not great for editing, etc, etc, so perhaps I should just delete this file, and keep going the route I'm now using ( capturing the original camcorder footage with Pinnacle Studio 11 ) (?? )
I also wonder, if one only owns Premiere, then what on earth do you do, if you have an HDV camcorder ? ( perhaps all of you that own one of these camcorders, capture the video footage from the camcorder, in a program other than Premiere ? )
Thanks for any info you may wish to give,
    Dave.

I am not so sure the problem is always restricted to CS3 captured footage. I convert from AVCHD to HDV (usually using Elecard, or Procoder etc) and find that if I stitch the output into a longish single HDV file then although that hdv file plays ok in a player, and is in sync - it loses sync when imported into PP CS3 - but is OK in other NLEs (well Vegas) Seems to me that CS3 cannot hold sync if (some) hdv clips are simply longish. Bad bug!- although seems it's being worked on according to similar threads

  • Exporting HDV footage to web streaming

I'm trying to Export HDV footage to web streaming format but it always ends up stretched to fit the streaming format. any suggestions

i'm with andy. i've been shooting hdv1080i60 for the past few months for web distribution, but a bunch of the sites/video players that i use don't support 16:9, and if i uploaded the video like that, it would get all stretched. my workaround has been to export>QT movie after i'm done editing, and then make a new 4:3 sequence and drop the previously exported quicktime file in it, and then export>using QT conversion at 320x240 with my normal web settings. it makes the video "letterboxed" but it plays undistorted when uploaded to youtube, google video, etc.
