HDV iMovie 08, Lots of Discussions, Lots of confusion, please help!

OK. First of all, my apologies if this has already been addressed, and if someone could direct me to the appropriate discussion it would be highly appreciated. OK, say you have a small little entry level HD camcorder like an Airtek A-HD (720p). OK, it stores clips as .mov, iPhoto imports when connected, then I start iMovie 08 and it sees the .mov clips in iPhoto and brings them over to iMovie 08 to start a new project or whatever. OK. So I string the clips together and export them to Quicktime. My settings are .H264, Quality High, Encoding mode multi-pass, dimensions 1280X720. I open up quick time, play my recently made HD movie clip and when I click on info about this particular quicktime clip it shows: 1280X720 H.264. So I am confused, what am I losing as far as quality and when am I losing it? How is iMovie physically handling it when I am importing this clip, does iMovie 08 turn it into 960X540 as some have suggested for editing and then export it based on my own preferences i.e. back to H.264 and 1280 X 720? Do I lose anything if it does change my original clip to 960 X 540? How will this effect my work using a 1080i Camcorder? I'm confused, perhaps I will stumble on some answers as I delve into some online and other resources, but until then any help or info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well, I guess part of my question was answered, I see iMovie 08 encourages you to import 1080i HD movies at 960X540. Hmmm, interesting.

There is nothing you can do with iMovie program itself. Slow response in usually due to a shortage of system resources (CPU, RAM and disk space).
How much free disk space do you have on your boot drive and what is the capacity of the drive?
You can check memory utilization while running iMovie using Activity Monitor (in Applications/Utilities). What does the Memory tab show for Swap used?
Are you running many other processor-intensive applications a the same time?
If you have a lot of events and projects, it will help a bit to hide the ones you are not using by moving them from your iMovie Projects and iMovie Events folders into an enclosing folder so iMovie doesn't load them.

New iPod 5 gen and apps won't work, and when I take photos in the camera roll they show up when I click the preview in the left bottom corner but not in the photo album in the photos app, frozen a lot and resets it self a lot when it's frozen! Please help

My brand new iPod touch 5th gen (silver) i use it a lot and I take really great care if it but just today it's been acting really slow, freezing up all the time, it won't let me open up apps, the notification bar (dragged down) all gone (no markets/weather/noticfications) and never says anything, and the camera. Camera is really bugging me, when you go in the app "camera" I tooka photo, and I went to the left bottom corner and clicked that preview, it shows all the photos there, but it won't let you edit them, share or delete them. But when you go into the photos app, and go to camera roll they aren't there at all.
When I try to open apps, they freeze and then I try to move/delete them and then it freezes, and stops everything. Shuts down, and restarts and like nothing's happened.
Please, this is my first iPod and I really care about this so so much. Please somebody help me with something!!!! Please!!!!

Try:

If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

Lots of DW problems...please help

I've been wrestling with DW for the Mac for the past few days
and I'm about to give up...
I'm using MX 2004 7.0.1 and it's constantly crashing when I
try to upload my files (spinning wheel), everything I download from
my server reencodes simple characters like \" or - into strange
characters, even though it's inside of a block of PHP and shouldn't
be touched, and in some cases it will only download half a file!
I never had any of these problems on my PC, using the same
version of Dreamweaver and I've mirrored my settings. The ONLY
difference I can see is that in a new document, I can't set the
encoding to Western(Europe), but to Western(Latin1) or
Western(Mac).
So can someone tell me what's up? Please?

Try double checking your ftp preferences and internet
connections to make sure that it's okay there. I know that seems
wierd, but if the server is timing out on you due to a preference
you may have set (or is a default) that may cause the truncated
files and consistant "spinning ball of death"

Burning a slideshow from imovie to idvd doesn't work...Please help

I'm trying to burn a slideshow I created in imovie to DVD but it doesn't seem to work. Everytime I click on the burn icon in idvd it tells me to insert a blank DVD. Once i insert a blank dvd it spits it right out.
I'm getting married on July 1 and I need this slideshow to work.

When you upload the site is has nothing to do with iWeb and people who work for the hosting companies and say that iWeb is the problem or is rubbish do not have a clue what they are talking about. They use it as an excuse because they don't understand what they are doing.
What folder do you have to upload your site to on the server? Is it called "public_html", or "htdocs" or something like this? If so, then in the directory/path, where some can leave it blank, you can enter public_html or htdocs or whatever file you upload to on your server. This should then work.
Your other option of course, is not to use the iWeb built in ftp, but to select publish to a local folder and then download Cyberduck - a dedicated ftp programme and use this to upload your site. If you use Cyberduck, then you can connect directly with your server and you can see exactly where all your site files are being uploaded to and exactly what folder on your server you have to upload to. If you use iWeb ftp, then you are working blind really and just hoping for the best.
Either try inserting the name of your folder in the directory/path section or publishing to a local folder and using Cyberduck to upload instead.

IMovie '11 project file won't open. Please help!

My daughter put together a short film for a school project last night using iMovie '11 my brand new, out-of-the-box MacBook Pro (running X.6.8).
I needed to have the identity updated at work today (including reinstalling my user profile used to create the project) - so I moved the iMovie Project files (as well as her original clips) to the hard drive, with IT guidance.
However, now the project won't open. This is extremely distressing!!!
I don't have the iMovie Events files. In fact, I don't recall seeing that file in the Movies folder. I'm not sure if this can be retreived (?) since the user doesn't exist.
Any help and guidance would be most appreciated.

IT-guidance - can be anything from a Mac Guru to a PC-fanatics (and last sort they do not usually know)
Moving iMovie Event's and Project's -
• MUST NOT BE DONE on DeskTop/Finder as this cut's the connection to iMovie. Has to be done within the iMovie Application (reg. iMovie'08 or 09 or 11)
• MUST BE TO A - Mac OS Extended (HFS) formatted hard disk - else material will break up in 4Gb blocks that eventually never can be mended (Need a Mac Guru to do this - if possibly)
UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - Will not work for VIDEO (whatever flavor it is .dv, .QT, .mpg2, .AIC etc. - no GO) - for everything else YES - but not for VIDEO.
You might try to move things back - and hope that iMovie now finds the material and then within the iMovie Application move it out to an external Mac OS Extended (HFS) formatted drive - prefer. FireWire one as USB/USB2 performs badly to me.

IMovie creates weird frame flickering on export only -- please help!!

Hello iMovie experts.. Need your advise!!!!!
I've been using iMovie 11 for some time now... Had no issues... All of a sudden a few days ago,
after I already burnt a disk, i noticed blinking in the clip where I had a 'Dream' video effect...
I opened the exported mov file, and the blinking is there.... So I went to the project, no issues, - the clip that
has the effect plays good, no 'flickering'..
As soon as I export it -- on the clip where i apply a video effect, every second or so I see a black frame, or the blurred frame, or a frame as if the
effect wasn’t applied to that clip.......
I tried exporting via almost everything... Export Movie, Export to QuickTime (no compressions, mp4, h264, etc), ... same thing
is happening over and over... I tried removing the Preference file from User\Library\Preferences file, but it did not help..
I also tried duplicating a project. What happened was, the problem did not go away, but on top of that, it created about
10 minutes of black video towards the end of the movie...... ?!?!?!?!?!
I also removed Flip4Mac and Divx components... no luck...
Can anyone suggest anything please?? thanks!

You know, i optimized a video once, and it was very jerky when it played at about 40% speed (slow-motion), vs. when I import non-optimized..
I dont want to jump the gun yet, as the below doesnt really make sense, at least to me, BUT......
What I noticed is that the flickering of the clips with applied effects only happens when there an opening
transition in the very beginning of the project.. I placed a "fade-in" transition in the beginning so that the video fades in as it starts.... As soon as i removed it.. it exports fine, no flickering, no nothing, back to normal..
.... I also tried a few new small projects with and without the transition in the beginning and I would get the same pattern after export: with a trans in the beginning of the clip with video effect, -- it would blink after being exported.. As soon as beginning trans removed -- back to normal.. I know... i doesnt make sense...
I wonder if you can produce this:
[fade in trans] [normal clip] [clip with Dream effect] [some other trans] [clip with some other Effect]
and
[normal clip] [clip with Dream effect] [some other trans] [clip with some other Effect]
Thoughts?? I am scratching my head now!

Workoround - working in guest account. Copy the media to the share user folder and then on the guest desktop copy the media from the shared folder to the guest desktop folder. Start iMovie and begin your project on guest account.

IMovie HD- splitting clips massive problem...please help

Hello, I wonder if anyone can help as this problem is really driving me mad. I am using Imovie 6.03 HD and OS X 10.85 on my Macbook Pro i5 but the problem has happened on my Mac Pro and with previous systems I seem to remember.
When I split a clip in two, and delete the unwanted clip the position of the remaining clip completely changes even though it tells me it is the exact same length. I have tried deleting in different ways, I even removed all my slick plugins but still the same, I end up with the clip beginning at a different point in my footage.
Anybody have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

What you have is an iMovie '06 Project package (a special folder) and iMovie '09 can't import it.
You'll need to export the Project to a QuickTime format (DV Stream is best for compatibility) on the G5 and transfer the QuickTime file to the USB drive.
This process will render any effects, transitions and audio/video into the new file so you will not be able to edit them out. Make sure the Project is a close to finished as possible.

I have a G5 Dual 2.0 Ghz PPC with 2gb of memory.
I am trying to install iLife 08.
The requirements say:
iLife ’08 requirements
Hardware: Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 processor
• iMovie requires a Mac computer with an Intel processor, a Power Mac G5 (dual 2.0GHz or faster), or an iMac G5 (1.9GHz or faster)
• iDVD requires 733MHz or faster processor
512MB of RAM; 1GB recommended; high-definition video requires at least 1GB of RAM
I have the minimum.
Why can't I install iMovie if i have the minimum requirements?
Please help! I bought iLife 08 just to run the new iMovie. Don't tell me i have to purchase a new computer now?!?

As Ben says, solved, it is.
Here's my little saga:
Upon detaching the 24" from the ATI 9200 and restarting, the installation, including iMovie, went without a hitch. Again, this is with the 9200 still seated comfortably in its PCI slot.
After reattaching the display and restarting, iMovie '08 would not even launch. I was greeted with a small dialog box:
"*Quartz Extreme Required*
iMovie requires a graphics card that is compatible with Quartz Extreme. One or more of your graphics cards does not support Quartz Extreme."
The only button was Quit. As a comparison, I then launched iMovie '06. I was greeted with this:
"*Your computer contains a graphics card which may not support iMovie.*
iMovie requires a “Quartz Extreme Compatible” graphics card. Certain iMovie features such as Themes, Ken Burns Photos, and Video FX may not work properly with your graphics card."
In this instance, however, my options were "Quit" and "Launch iMovie." Selecting "Launch iMovie" allowed me to use the application, but without the Quartz animations.
Definitely a "kinder, gentler" iMovie.
Whenever I wish to use either version of iMovie, I'll have to unplug the third display, and restart before I can get down to business.
Two things of interest to me are:
1) What would happen if I had unplugged the third display and restarted, launched iMovie (either version, but '08 especially), and then hot-attached the third display to the 9200? I'm curious to see what would happen. Naturally, attaching and un-attaching displays to a running Mac is not recommended, but it's been fairly common practice in the Mac repair shops at which I've worked. *I definitely do not recommend it, as you may end up frying something.*
That being said, I'm still curious to see if iMovie would still run properly, freeze, or quit.
2) Remember a few generations of Mac OS X back there was a little software hack called "PCI Extreme?" It's purpose was to fool an application into thinking you were Quartz enabled. There were many caveats, most notably that it could not perform magic on older cards, but many folks had success with it in Jaguar and Panther. Now, it seems, a few Tiger users are playing with it. The developer’s notes mention the following:
"Unfortunately, because Apple hardcoded the setting into CoreGraphics, I'm not aware of a way to enable both AGP and PCI graphics quartz acceleration at the same time. If you know a way, please let me know."
Therein, as the Bard tells us, lies the rub. Still, this avenue remains interesting. If I knew the first thing about coding, I'd delve into this to see if there was a method by which an application like iMovie would at least "ignore" the 9200 (as in this particular case) and just let the X850 XT do its thing.

I agree that this issue is solved insofar as the boundaries of the initial question posted by Marc. It's the geeky can of worms that follows that will nag at me for a while.
This is ironic, as I use iMovie so infrequently I shouldn’t be concerned by this, especially seeing as there is a work-around if at least one of your installed cards is, indeed, capable of baring the brunt.
The biggest lingering issue, to me, is why can't we have a better, more powerful PCI option than the 9200? I suppose the answer is; "There is. It's called a Mac Pro."

PLEASE HELP!! USE TIME MACHINE & RESTORED IMOVIE PROJECT CANNOT BE OPENED

Please HELP!!!! Imovie yesterday didnt save any of my project changes so I redid them today. And after I just closed Imovie again it did not save my changes from today. Thats 2 days of editing with no record of the changes
I use Time machine but I have never needed to restore anything. I have gone into time machine, found the file, hit restore and saved it on my desktop but I am not finding the file in imovie.
When I click on the file and select open in imovie it is not opening or if it is, it is not the file with the changes when it diverts me to imovie. So basically I can see the file in Time machine, I am restoring it to my computer but I cannot locate it in imovie with the changes. I can see the file on my desktop but i cant open it to view other than in imovie which ofcourse isnt showing the changes.
PLEASE HELP!!! IM DEVASTATED!!!!
I am working from an external hard drive. Yesterday I had the prompt appear that I had no more disk space (on my computer) so today i deleted a bunch of things and didnt get that prompt. And in anycase i am working off an external.
Please help me!!! I need a saviour!!!

Have you tried deleting iMovie's preference file?
Close iMovie and go to your Home folder(YourUserName)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.imovie.plist
Drag this plist file to the Trash. Don't worrry; iMovie will create a new fresh one when you relaunch it.
Reopen iMovie and see if it works ok now.
By the way, if you have more than one iMovie version on your computer, be sure to trash the correct plist.
iMovie 6 is 'com.apple.imovie.plist' but iMovie 8 is 'com.apple.imovie7.plist' and I expect that iM9 would be 'imovie8.plist' If you find only the one plist and you have only one version of iM, just trash that one.
Post back if this does not help.

The performance fixes is a biggy for me, though the other missing

Well ... now that's the rub. I would actually welcome this intermediate version to play with (even with the cost of upgrading) if I could rely on it to be finalized into 6.0, full featured, without it taking as long as it has to Upgrade from AA3.0. I would say it was a VERY smart move to give us a preview of 6.0, if I felt in, say, six months they would provide us the fully functional update. But, HOW many years has it been. I felt screwed over while they played around with Sound Booth.
I was with you for a minute in most of what you said, until your credibility went down a couple notches with me on the statement trivializing midi functionality. I though that was a very clueless statement:
